==LAP 6==
Chiya and Earl were walking down the hallway of Seppuku’s base together, now entering the lobby. The day had passed and Chiya had at long last obtained a more suitable place to stay. She felt somewhat uncomfortable however, as from now on she would be living with Earl and Seppuku. Earl tried hitting on her in the bar and Seppuku was a darkly mysterious person; now she slept in the same building as them. Chiya was contemplating whether her decision to join Seppuku’s organization was made too quickly. She had agreed to join his vigilante group all for an F-Zero machine.
“Maybe with you around things won’t be so boring,” Earl said with a grin.
Chiya raised an eyebrow at him as they walked, “Seppuku is such an interesting character, how can it possibly get boring around here?”
Earl stretched in the air as they walked towards the other door in the lobby, “Yeah, but he always isolates himself in his office. The only time he leaves his office is at night when he hunts…”
“Hunts?” Chiya asked with a frightened expression.
“Whenever there’s no work to be done, he sneaks around Mute City at night in search of crime here in the Lower City; such as the predicament you found yourself in that one night, as I’ve heard.”
Chiya lowered her head somewhat taking offense. She covered her chest at the mentioning of the sickening night, “I had that situation under control before he came along…” she muttered angrily.
Earl smirked, “Yeah, that’s definitely what I heard,” he said sarcastically.
Earl opened a door in the lobby that Chiya had yet to see, revealing a cold room with metal parts all over the place. At first glance the room appeared to be a personal indoor junkyard, but closer observations revealed a very disorganized garage. In the middle of the mess was a dirty unpainted body for an F-Zero machine. Chiya widened her eyes and gasped, gazing intensely at the dull grey body.
“Well there it is. That was originally meant to be my F-Zero machine, but God knows I can’t pilot those things, and I’ve never had intentions of racing,” Earl explained calmly.
Chiya placed her hand on the body of the machine, the steel was cold and completely void of any cuts. The body seemed to be brand new. She was staring at the body in amazement as he mouth quivered in awe.
“Wow!” she blurted out excitedly.
“Well don’t get too excited, this is only the body. Luckily the computer and dashboard are already installed, but the body still requires the main components.”
Chiya was practically hugging the body of the machine in excitement, “So this is going to be mine eventually?”
Earl gave her a thumbs up, “You bet, it can be yours right now. I planned on painting it chrome black and red, calling it the Dark Avenger,” Earl proposed with his first raised in the air with a feeling of glory.
Chiya rubbed her chin while narrowing her eyes, “-or…”
Chiya leapt in front of the machine gleefully, “We could paint it all red and pink, and name it the Purring Kitten!” she shouted in excitement.
Earl grunted with a stunned expression as if he were just slapped across the face, his original dream of making the machine intimidating was crushed, “W- well, I guess that could work…” he muttered while rubbing his head.
“So where do we get all of the other parts?”
Earl sat down on a metal spin-around chair, “Well, Seppuku claims that you already possess a basic F-Zero engine?”
Chiya shot back a troubled look, having already forgotten the life she had been leading outside of the base, “Yes, but it’s back home, well, where I was staying…”
“Flower!” Seppuku’s obnoxiously loud voice rang through both Earl and Chiya’s ears.
Seppuku threw Chiya a small box, about the size of a water bottle. She looked up at Seppuku while slowly lifting the lid up, the contents of the box were several bullets for her handgun. Chiya widened her eyes and swallowed nervously.
“Oh God, why are y-”
“This part of Mute City is as dangerous as it gets. If you’re going to return for that engine, you’ll need to be on your toes at all times.”
Chiya studied his words carefully, trying to understand what he was implying, “Where’s the police?”
Seppuku let out a laugh, “Police? We are the police.”
Chiya looked at him in shock. He was referring to the lack of police in the Lower City. The idea of there not being police patrols down in the Lower City was insane to her. The Lower City had a very high crime rate, this was due to the lack of funding and police in this part of Mute City. The complete opposite for the Upper City.
“I would gladly accompany you, but this wound is going to take at least two more days to heal,” he said patting his hand on his collarbone.
Earl jolted his head up and narrowed his eyes angrily. He turned his head very slowly towards Seppuku, “Uh, no---o, I said two weeks!”
Seppuku began to laugh loudly, “Two weeks? Yeah right.”
Earl growled angrily, “Why do you always do this?”
“What kind of danger do you think I might come across?” asked Chiya.
Seppuku and Earl exchanged glances. Seppuku then tilted his head towards her, “We’re surrounded by a gang war between Red Star and The Bloody Chain. You need to make sure you’re back before the sun sets, or you may get caught between the feud. But the Gang War is only the worst-case scenario, there’s always crime lurking down here. Twenty-four seven.”
“Gang War!? Do you really think I might encounter this if I don’t hurry?” she asked frantically.
“Damn right, in the eyes of the gangs—you’re their property.”
Chiya gritted her teeth nervously and nodded fearfully, “I better get going then!”
Chiya sprinted out the door immediately after saying this, searching for the exit of the building. Earl and Seppuku could see that she was loading her handgun with ammo as she ran, making it clear to both of them that she had a bad feeling about this mission. Once she was out of sight Earl looked at Seppuku with a look discontent.
“Why did you lie to her?”
“Lie? In what way?”
Earl flailed his hands angrily, “Don’t give me that. You know just as well as I do that there is no specific time the Gang War goes hot, it just happens whenever!”
Seppuku nodded in acknowledgment, “True, but if I told her that, she would have never agreed to go get the engine.”
Earl sighed at his reasoning, “What does your mother think about you?”
A while later, Chiya quickly walked along the sidewalks of the streets. She was still in an area completely unfamiliar to her. Her handgun was tucked away to her side, but she could tell that she was going to need it by the end of this. The feeling she felt walking down the streets was strange, as if she weren’t supposed to be walking down the streets in the first place. However in this case she was just waiting to get mugged--or worse.A shock went through her body as she suddenly spotted someone creep around the corner of a building to look at her. Chiya felt that she could quickly find herself in the same situation she was in previously, only this time she had a gun. The person disappeared almost immediately after looking at her, she assumed that this person was also trying to avoid contact with criminals. She noticed that there were no businesses opened around this area. This section of the Lower City was just as quiet as the base. Many of the buildings appeared damaged, indicating that the government paid no attention to this area of Mute City at all, as if they had completely given up on the people here. The fact was that no one visited the Lower City voluntarily. The Lower City was a place best avoided. The Lower City was reserved for scum or people that were too poor to afford even the most standard of places. A few miles away was where the roads would begin leading upwards. This led to the more financial and thriving areas; the land of opportunity, simply referred to as the Upper City.
Chiya noticed that even more people were looking at her from behind buildings; this was overly freighting to her, however these people did not appear to be dangerous. The people appeared dirty, clearly they were just homeless people who were interested in her. She had a hard time feeling sympathetic for these people however, as she had been living in no better state a mere day ago.
Minutes later she knew that she was slightly more safe, as she had made it back to the area with the bar. Before she went back to her warehouse, she decided to see what had come out of the bar that had been damaged by Michael Chain. She rounded a corner of a building and could see that the streets were blocked off by police signs. To her surprise, there were a few officers in the area--specifically investigators. The signs did not state whether she could pass through or not, rather they appeared to be there for the purpose of keeping vehicles away. Chiya decided that she would approach the officers and collect information.
Chiya walked over to one of the officers standing by the main damaged part of the building, “Hello sir, what happened to this place?” she asked with an unrealistic smile. She was obviously lying, as she could easily be a suspect.
The officer stepped away from the wall and looked into her eyes, “It’s a complete mystery to us, but we know it was a part of this dang gang war.”
Chiya glanced inside of the now destroyed bar. The building was much more astonishing without the smoke, as she could now see just how much damage was actually inflicted. All of this just to kill Seppuku..?
“Right now, we’re debating whether we label this as an Act of Terror. But that’s hard to label if it wasn’t something directed towards the citizens, rather it was a result of gang violence.”
“What’s to become of the bar?”
The officer shook his head sadly, “This place is done for, the owner was killed by the explosion yesterday, which is a real shame.”
Chiya didn’t know the owner personally, but this was the only place she ever went to before she had met Earl and Seppuku. She relied on this place for a long time for F-Zero racing and a place to go for the news. Rough Odds would be difficult for her to say goodbye to.
“This was one of the only places we got to go to for fun when we were off-duty, so now we’re back to listening to F-Zero races on our radios,” the officer complained.
Chiya nodded sympathetically for him, “I’m sorry to hear that, I really do appreciate you guys providing us with help down here in such a dangerous area. I hope you can end this gang war soon.”
The officer was grinning at everything she said up until the part where she mentioned ending the gang war, “Yeah…”
Chiya turned around and continued towards her old home. She had left the crime scene within moments. Michael Chain had completely ruined a place for fun and discussion, many poor F-Zero fans would no longer have a way to watch the Grand Prix. Chiya was only lucky that she had gotten a new place to stay where she could watch the races. If she hadn’t been offered a job, she would have lived a much duller life in the abandoned warehouse—unable to watch her favorite sporting event.
Not long after Chiya’s encounter with the officer, she had made it to the abandoned warehouse. She entered the room with her mattress and saw that the box containing the engine was still sitting there. Chiya decided that she would go around first and collect any other possessions she owned, before realizing, she owned nothing of importance. She looked down at her mattress where a patterned blanket sat. She held it up and looked at it. My mother was so sure I would bring fame and fortune to the Flower name. I’ve failed her… she thought to herself painfully. The blanket was crafted by her mother, which meant it had much importance to her. Finally, she grabbed a gym bag full of what possessions she did own and put the blanket in the box with the engine. She departed the building for the last time. She would not miss the warehouse.
It didn’t take very long for her to get the engine and her valuables, but now she had the challenge of carrying this large box back with her. Considering the situation she had gotten herself into the last time she carried this, she would need to be careful. She would need to drop this package if she were to pull out her handgun, which was her only defense. This time she was trying to avoid the sidewalks, simply moving down the streets. This wasn’t very smart considering the unlikely odds that an F-Zero machine could come darting down the streets at full speed, she would have no reaction time to leap away if this were to happen. The only F-Zero racer she could possibly come across would be Michael Chain. Luckily, Chiya had a fairly easy time remembering how to get to Seppuku‘s base. The real challenge would be getting back to base without confrontation.Chiya passed by Rough Odds, however there were no longer any officers present, which was odd since she had only just been there. She had only been walking for mere minutes and her arms were already becoming very weak from holding such a large object. The streets were much darker in the Lower City since the large metropolis surrounding it always blocked the sun. the Upper City was where the light was more visible.
After walking for several more minutes, she was a little more than halfway back to the base. Chiya had not come across any problems during her trip. It appeared that she would be home free; or so she had thought. Far across from her was the image of two men facing each other, there appeared to be a homeless person bickering with a much stronger counterpart. Chiya speed-walked to the side of a building quickly, observing the two closely. The next thing Chiya could make out was that the much larger person was acting more authoritative towards the other, she soon realized what was happening, and it sent her into a cold. She had a very still stance. The muscular man held a knife towards the homeless man, Chiya knew for a fact that this was an act of injustice. She got closer with the desire to hear the conversation they were having.“I don’t want to be part of this!” the homeless man begged.
“Red Star needs more active members if we are to defeat the Bloody Chain!” the muscular man yelled back at him.
“B- but I would gain nothing out of this. Our lives here are already awful enough!”
“Your motivation for joining is that I’ll spare you!”
Chiya gasped and began to tremble greatly. She knew that this wasn’t her battle, but the more she looked at the man, the more she thought of herself being in that position. The fact of the matter was that to an extent, she was in that exact position, and Seppuku granted her another chance by saving her. Chiya quickly came to the realization that he had a knife--but she had a gun. It was the exact same situation that she had been in, and it was her time to play Seppuku.
The muscular man stopped talking at the sound of a gun cocking. Both men turned around to see Chiya aiming at him with an intense stare. She was holding the pistol with both her hands while trembling. She was fairly shocked at what she was doing, and what she was possibly about to do.
“Well, what is this now?” the muscular man asked in a threatening voice.
“Y- you know what this is. Leave this man alone!” she yelled nervously in a heroic way.
The man raised an eyebrow as he noticed her frantic trembling. The fear in Chiya’s eyes helped establish to him that he still had the upper hand. He smirked and shook negatively.
“Little girl, you’re doing a man’s job right now. Now, you’re lucky you came across me, because I’m willing to let you go this time. Other gang members would kill you, or even…” Chiya growled at him, her built up anger was inspiring her to hold onto the gun a little more steadily. She now held the pistol with only one hand, “Even if you kill me, Red Star will track you down and take care of you,” he said while laughing.
Chiya glared at him and grinded her teeth, “I don’t have time for trash!”
Chiya turned her gun downward and fired, hitting him perfectly in the knee. She had clearly destroyed his kneecap, as he fell to the ground. He grunted loudly and looked up at her.
“Son of a- you shot me in the knee! That’s so weak!”
The homeless man had run away from the first moment Chiya fired the gun. She stood in front of the injured gangster, now greatly disturbed at what she had just done. Chiya swallowed and returned to her trembling stance.
“So, what now. Are you going to finish me off?”
Chiya lowered her weapon and let out a sigh, “No, that isn’t part of my mission,” she said as she holstered her handgun.
After concluding the engagement, she began walking away to grab the engine she left by the building, the man remained on the ground still looking at her. He widened his eyes and grunted.
“Yo- you’re part of Bloody Chain!” he yelled accusingly.
Chiya disregarded his accusation and began running with the box and bag, she had likely gotten herself into more trouble by firing at a gang member.
Chiya eventually made it back to the alley leading to the base’s front door. Chiya had not encountered any further trouble. The conflict she had gotten herself into gave her the adrenaline rush to sprint all the way back to the base. Now panting, she opened the door and entered--safe.Chiya walked back into the garage looking for Earl, but did not see him. She set the engine on a table and left the garage. Neither Earl or Seppuku were anywhere to be seen. The problem with the base was that every room was somehow utterly silent, no matter how loud you were in another room. After dropping the blanket and bag on her new bed she stopped to think. She looked back at her door and quirked her mouth, contemplating where the two would have gone. She snapped her fingers and bobbed her head. Earl mentioned Seppuku never leaves his office...
She spent a few minutes trying to remember which one of the doors led to his office, but eventually came to it. She felt somewhat stupid not knowing which door it was however, as his office door was the lone door far across the hallway. Her door was on the right-center of the hallway. She opened his office door and exhaled in relief as she had found both Earl and Seppuku.
“I’m back.”
“Did you encounter any problems?” Seppuku asked while tilting his head to the side.
Chiya nodded affirmatively, “I found a gang member of the Red Star, I think. He was mugging some old man.”
“-and?”
“I engaged him, successfully.”
Seppuku put his hands together, “-and he’s dead?”
Chiya shook her head negatively, “No, I shot him in the knee then left him.”
Seppuku put his hands on the table angrily, “You’re a fool for doing that. But regardless, you completed your mission and saved an innocent life.”
“A fool?” she asked hostilely.
“Yes, an idiot-girl. Why would you leave him like that?”
Chiya held her chin and shrugged, “It just seemed wrong to kill him.”
Seppuku slammed his fist down angrily, “Is it? You shot him, which likely disabled him. Now, who’s going to save him?” Chiya widened her eyes and gasped, instantly feeling guilty. “He likely laid there bleeding to death in pain, where he spent his final moments on the ground suffering. The most heroic thing to do in that situation would be to set him free on the spot--by killing the bastard!”
Chiya bit her finger at the thought of going that far, “B- but-”
“However, as I said, you’ve completed your mission. You’ll find that future engagements will put you in these tough situations, in which case the fate of your victim is in your hands alone--not mine.”
Chiya shook her head negatively with her eyes shut, she was now frowning, “I’m sorry…” she muttered sadly.
Seppuku turned towards a television Earl was looking at, “You must have not noticed what happened while you were gone then?” asked Seppuku.
“What is it?”
Earl glanced over at her and quirked his mouth, “While you were gone, there were reports of a devastating firefight between the two gangs. The firefight was in the middle of an intersection, and reports are saying there were civilian casualties.”
Chiya was staring at the TV screen which was showing a simple photo of Michael Chain at the crime scene.
After a day of both horror and excitement, it was becoming clear to Chiya that before she could get to work on F-Zero, this dreaded gang war would need to end…
