“That’s Jack?”
Jacob’s voice sounded out the disbelief Rose and Miranda felt as well. They’d traveled across the galaxy to the Hourglass Nebula, been double-crossed by Purgatory’s greedy warden, and now they had an entire station’s security force bearing down on them. All to retrieve their next recruit. Jack’s rapsheet could fill out an entire library, and the name and notoriety had led them to expect a hardened killer, no doubt built like a rhino and just as frightening to come face to face with.
Instead, Jack was a girl. A petite, skinny young woman in her early 20’s, who didn’t look any more frightening than any of the young interns working onboard the Normandy. Frozen in cryostasis, Jack’s appearance was certainly unusual: her head was shaven completely, and her body seemed to be covered with strange tattoos from neck to toe. The upper half of her body was completely bare, save for two thin straps holding down her breasts. Unusual, certainly, but not exactly intimidating.
Miranda was already checking the prison logs on her omni-tool. “There doesn’t seem to be a mistake. That’s who we’re here for.”
The only thing keeping Jack in stasis was the control switch placed before Shepard. She’d been told that flipping the switch would release every prisoner onboard the ship as well, but they didn’t have time to consider alternatives. Besides, the chaos might get Warden Kuril off their backs. “Get ready,” she warned, pressing the button down.
Cold steam hissed as it poured out of Jack’s containment pod, lowering the temperature of the unit as the systems began reviving the convict from her induced slumber. Two YMIR mechs positioned as sentries stirred from their own hibernation, detecting activity from their ward for the first time in months. Just as they were within arm’s reach of the pod, Jack’s eyes flew open.
The room flared blue with biotic energy as the convict brought her hands together for a thunderous clap, creating a shockwave that blew both mechs away from her. Moving so fast Shepard could barely see her, Jack pulled herself free of the pod and leaped at one of the mechs as it struggled to pull itself back onto its feet. The YMIR mechs were designed to survive hits from tanks. One hit from Jack decapitated it. The other mech was already taking aim at the convict, but it couldn’t match her speed, and paid the price as Jack used her biotics to force the mech’s arm upwards, making it blow its own head off.
Taking a moment to absorb the reality of her freedom, Jack’s face broke into a devilish grin, and she began running straight into the adjoining wall, crashing right through it as she prepared to make her escape. Purgatory’s alarm systems began blaring immediately.
“Warning: Subject Zero has escaped containment. Repeat: Jack has escaped containment.”
“I guess that really is Jack,” Jacob said. “Come on, she’s getting away!”
They rushed down the stairs and past the room Jack had just demolished, following her path through the gaping holes in the walls. "Have you ever seen a biotic this powerful?" Jacob asked.
Rose shook her head as she climbed through the wreckage and down into the gen-pop section of the prison. She'd been trained as a biotic from a young age, and she'd admired Liara's prowess, but that last display from Jack made their powers seem trivial in comparison. She cursed herself as she realized how unprepared they were for a situation like this. The Illusive Man's lack of information hadn't helped either.
General Population was strewn with corpses that stood as evidence of Jack's short but savage rampage. The walls were painted with blood splattered several feet high, and crippled mechs crawled to the safety of the shadows, their limbs torn apart by biotic fury. Shepard had been right about one thing --- Jack's release had definitely taken a lot of the pressure off them, considering Kuril's guards were now mostly all dead or worse --- but this definitely wasn't the kind of person she wanted to bring along for a mission with galactic stakes.
A low groan from one of the piles of rubble stopped them in their tracks. All they could see of the person the voice belonged to was a booted foot, buried underneath the metal and glass that made up much of the wreckage. Miranda used her biotics to gingerly lift the rubble away piece by piece, until they could see Warden Kuril on the floor in front of them. Jacob reached for his gun, but Rose signaled for him to stay holstered. It was clear Kuril wasn't going to be a threat anymore, not with the iron rod piercing out of his chest and pinning him to the ground.
The turian's eyes twitched weakly, vaguely recognizing the three humans standing over him as he lay in a steadily growing pool of his own blue blood. "You idiots actually did it," he rasped, "you just sprung Jack free. Did the thought ever strike you that she was in that damn cryopod for a reason?"
"Little late for criticism," Jacob retorted, "maybe we'd have known how to handle this better if you hadn't tried to double-cross us."
Kuril's short laugh was punctuated by violent coughing that sent flecks of blood flying through the air. "Blame whatever you want, human. I'm dead anyway. You're the ones who have to deal with her now. You think she's just going to follow orders and be a good little soldier? I hope your crew's got their coffins reserved already."
A crooked grin spread across his jaw as he spat out his dying words. "What's that expression you humans have? 'Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind'?"
They watched in quiet reverie as Kuril's pupils widened, his breath growing harsher and harsher until it left him forever. The screams and explosions were all just the background noise to the silent debate raging between them. They all knew what their options were. There wasn't any doubt that Jack's biotic abilities could bring pause to even the Collectors, but were they worth the risk? Would it be better to just depart now, and leave Jack trapped on a broken ship in the middle of nowhere?
EDI's voice forced them along the path of making a decision. "Shepard, Jack's trajectory has stopped near the exit dock. She is currently stationary and not attempting to escape, but the station's systems have been damaged too badly for me to take control of camera feeds."
"Maybe they gunned her down," Jacob said. "Hey, don't tell me you two aren't hoping it too."
Miranda gestured at the destruction all around them. "Look around you, Jacob. Do you really think someone capable of all this would have a problem with what little security they've got at the exit gate?"
"We're not going to find out standing around," Rose pointed out.
A deadly silence fell upon the station; there was no one left to stop Jack, and the precious few still alive were quickly fading away. Shepard, Jacob and Miranda stealthily made their way toward the exit dock, guns at the ready, checking every cell along their path for signs of their target. It wasn't until they reached the very end of the station's south wing that they caught their first sign of life: flickering, shifting shadows that indicated activity in one of the large storage rooms.
Rose signaled for the other two to be at the ready, and they slipped into the room with their firearms directed at every corner. The faint sounds of animalistic grunting sounded out from the far side of the chamber. Spreading out until they had the source of the sound covered from three different angles, they converged toward it....and found Jack waiting for them.
The convict wasn't alone, however. Pinned between Jack and the wall was a Blue Suns guard, a young brunette whose cheek was pressed against the steel surface, her body limp as she was rammed back and forth. Her standard-issue body armor was cracked and shattered in many places, and almost non-existent below the waist. Jack's skin gleamed with sweat while her face was a mask of feverish excitement, but what really stunned them was the thing connecting Jack to the unfortunate guard.
Swinging between Jack's legs were a sizable pair of balls, hanging carelessly like fruit from a branch, while above the balls extended a thick, long cock, smeared with fluids along its length, and accumulating more as it slammed in and out of the guard's abused, gaping pussy. The guard seemed conscious, but completely unaware of her surroundings, gasping and panting as she shook with the force of unwelcome lust washing over her. Jack's eyes were scrounged up with ecstasy, but through the cracks in her vision she could see the three soldiers pointing their guns at her. More importantly, she could see the insignia on Miranda's and Jacob's uniforms.
"Cerberus," she spat, not losing a beat in her rhythmic fucking, "Come back later. I haven't had decent pussy in months."
Miranda recovered from the shock of the sight first, clicking the safety on her sidearm to warn Jack. "Get away from her! Now!"
Jack wasn't impressed. "Bitch, if you were gonna kill me, you'd have pulled the trigger already. Unless you're a complete moron, which I wouldn't rule out." The guard squealed as Jack pulled her hips closer to her waist to squeeze a few more inches aside. "You wanna die so badly, wait your turn."
Jack pulled the guard's hair back and snarled at her prey. "You like this, don't you, whore? Show me how much you like this." Her hips smacked furiously against bare flesh, as the sensation of veined, throbbing meat filling out her pussy pushed the guard to one more orgasm she'd curse herself for later on. The spasming of her pussy drove Jack over the edge, and she erupted inside the poor woman with a whoop of glee, torrents of cum filling her out before splashing out from the sides of her plugged-up hole. Jack's legs wobbled as she emptied her balls inside the guard, and when she was done, the guard's tired form slipped off her fuckrod, until Jack's cock popped free from the cunt it had ravaged with a squelching sound that made them all flinch involuntarily.
Miranda was seething with silent rage now, struggling to keep her finger from pressing the trigger. "You're a sick---"
"Cut the crap," the convict replied, cutting Miranda off. Her gaze flickered to Rose and Jacob before returning to Miranda. "These two are definitely soldiers. And you're definitely not. So what do you do? Cerberus hire you to cheer 'em on or something?" Her eyes ran over the Cerberus operative's body, lingering on the curves of Miranda's waist and breasts. "Damn, the things I'd do to you..."
The other woman took a step forward and switched on her pistol's laser-sight, making sure Jack could see the trail of red light ending with a target-dot on her forehead. "I can think of one thing I'd to a lunatic like you, and it's going to come at muzzle velocity if you don't watch your tongue."
Jack burst into laugher; a soulless cackle that sent shivers down their spines. Slowly, blatantly, she grasped her monstrous cock in one hand and lifted it up for Miranda to see, stroking it back to a full erection. The hypnotic movement entranced Rose, who was stricken with panic as she remembered her own strange new organ and the effect it had had on her with Rana. Was this in her future? She'd completely lost control of herself on Korlus. Was she going to be a slave to that strange primal instinct for pleasure that Jack had so easily embraced?
Was she just like Jack?
No, she told herself, stamping the word onto her mind, I am NOTHING like her, and I'm not going to be--
"Tough talk, cheerleader," Jack whispered, her voice like a blade, shaking Rose out of her thoughts. "Lemme guess: you're always the uptight ice queen, no matter what. You want people to know they have to take you seriously." Her thumb traced circles around the pulsing purple head of her cock. "I've met bitches like you before. And they all had one thing in common: they were a lot more fun once you pull out the stick up their ass and replace it my prick up their ass."
Fully erect now, the cock nearly reached Jack's solar plexus, looking more like a weapon than a sexual organ. Jack lovingly traced a finger along the thick veins that sent engorging blood pumping into her cock. "You're thinking about it, aren't you, cheerleader?" Jack said. "Silly whore, prancing around in that whore outfit....who do you think you're kidding? You need a good fucking, and I'm ready to do it. A fight, on the other hand, won't have such a happy ending. For you."
Jacob had to grab Miranda's wrist to prevent her from taking the bait and emptying her clip into their new recruit, and it fell to Shepard to defuse the tension and salvage an escalating situation. "We're not here to fight you. We want to recruit you for a mission against a group of aliens called the Collectors. They're abducting whole human colonies, and we need your power to help us stop them."
A curious look flickered across Jack's brown eyes as she studied Shepard. "Cerberus spends years hunting me, and when they finally catch up, they wanna play superhero teamup? You must think I'm some special kind of stupid, lady."
Shepard steadied her aim as she introduced an iron edge to her voice, intending to make it very clear to Jack how serious she was. "Well, let's review the situation. This ship is going down in flames. We've got the only way out. We're offering to take you with us. And you're arguing."
Jack was taken aback for a second. "You're actually serious, aren't you? This shit about a mission's for real?"
Shepard's gaze remained unblinking and constant. "Like you said, if we wanted to kill you, we'd have pulled the trigger already."
The convict crossed her tattooed arms, mulling her options. "If I'm coming with you, we're making a deal first."
"Immunity?"
Jack laughed again. "I don't need immunity. They got lucky last time they caught me, and they know it. No, I want something else. Information."
Rose was confused. "What information are you talking about?"
"I bet you've got electronic archives onboard your ship. Secret Cerberus stuff. I want access to all of it. Give me that, and I'll play nice. For now."
Shepard consented readily, seeing the opportunity to defuse the confrontation in the best manner possible. "You can have it."
"Shepard," Miranda whispered, still angry she hadn't been able to shoot Jack, "you don't have the authority to give her access to--"
Jacob's interjection was an even quieter, but much sharper whisper. "Miranda, do not argue with the insane biotic killer, just give her the damn files--"
Jack clapped her hands together, demanding their attention. "Do we have a deal or not?"
"We do," Rose replied, "you get your files, and in exchange you work for me. And if you hurt a hair on the heads of any of my people, I will put a bullet in your head myself." She paused for a second to let the words sink in.
Jack smirked, raising her hands in mock surrender. "I'm all yours. Shame though," her gaze switched to Miranda, staring straight into her eyes, "I guess my night of fun and games with the cheerleader's gonna have to wait....which way's your ship?"
Their guns still drawn, they escorted Jack out of the storage room, off Purgatory, and onboard the Normandy, where her freely swinging cock caught the stunned attention of most of the crew. Jack didn't seem to care, and seemed to take pride in the spotlight.
Rose didn't have to guess what was going through Jacob's and Miranda's heads. Kuril's last words were all they could think about.
"What's that expression you humans have? 'Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind'?"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"She's completely psychotic and impossible to control. How are we supposed to regard her as anything but a disruptive influence?"
The Illusive Man slowly extinguished his cigarette over the edge of an empty glass, his steely blue eyes calmly surveying the hologram of Miranda standing before him. He'd asked for an update following each recruitment, and evidently this one had not met with the favor of the Normandy's crew.
"EDI has biotic suppressors and emergency defensive measures scattered throughout the ship, Miranda. If that's not enough, then I suggest you do your best to ensure Jack toes the line." He pinched the bridge of his nose and spent a few seconds in thought before continuing. "I admit Jack may be a less than ideal candidate for a group effort, but she has power, and in the end that may be the only language the Collectors understand."
Miranda sighed in frustration as her hopes of cutting her losses and dumping Jack on the nearest asteroid were dashed. "She's made a deal of some sort with Shepard ---- wouldn't get onboard the Normandy unless she was given access to our old archives---"
"Immaterial," the Illusive Man interjected, a decidedly dismissive tone to his voice. "She can search for whatever she wants."
Miranda's eyes narrowed. "So you know what she's looking for."
Her employer didn't even bother with a denial. "When Jack was four years old, her parents were killed, and she was kidnapped by one of our biotic research divisions that went rogue. They experimented on her for years, drugging her, fixing implants under her skin, all in the name of nurturing her considerable biotic abilities. They also had other children under experimentation, and periodically they'd force Jack to fight these other kids. Condition her to enjoy killing at an early age."
The news hit Miranda like a bomb, stunning her into silence. It was some time before she could speak again. "If we know she hates Cerberus, then why allow her access to those archives?"
"Because those archives prove that Cerberus didn't know what was happening to her," the Illusive Man explained, "As I said, it was a rogue outfit.....and when Jack learns that, it may warm her attitude to Cerberus a little."
"So when she finds what she's looking for---"
"Go along with it. Once she learns the truth, she'll start searching for remnants of that unfortunate project: the old facility at Pragia, a surviving scientist, who knows. But let her get it out of her system."
Miranda nodded and began to withdraw from the holographic interface, but the Illusive Man had one last order. "One more thing, Miranda."
"Yes?"
"Find out why Shepard wanted the Project Lazarus files emailed to her cabin."
It was the second time Miranda was shocked during the conversation. "She did what?"
The Illusive Man poured a fifth of a bottle of salarian whisky into his glass. "She wanted all the files relating to Lazarus sent to her cabin. I don't know why, especially considering the medical complexities of her resurrection should be outside the scope of her understanding, but she's poring over them all. You don't know it because she ordered EDI not to tell you, but she doesn't have the authority to stop EDI from telling me."
Miranda digested the information slowly, already wondering why Rose would want those files. Were there complications she wasn't telling anyone about?
"I'll look into it."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jacob and Rose were already holding an animated discussion by the time Miranda walked into the armory, and from what she could tell, it was about the same thing that was on everyone's minds: what to do if Jack went rogue, which seemed extremely likely after what they'd seen on Purgatory.
"......could be the lesser of two evils. Okeer said his programming was perfect, remember?"
"And all we've got is Okeer's word, Commander. He was wrong about all his other clones. On the off-chance that he's wrong about this one too, can we really risk two unstable forces running amok on this ship?"
"What's going on?" Miranda asked.
The other two turned to face her, frustration and disagreement evident on their faces. "I think we should release Okeer's clone from his breeding pod," Rose said.
"Shepard, the risks are---"
"I know what the risks are," Rose interjected, "but let's face it, if Jack decides to blow a hole in this ship, EDI may not be able to stop her. If we have to fight monsters with monsters, so be it."
"EDI," Miranda asked, "if the krogan goes berserk right after he's released...."
"The engineering deck can be purged in 27 seconds," the AI responded.
Jacob shook his head as the three stood in silence, contemplating their options. "It's your call, Commander, and we'll have your back. But we've gotta be careful about this."
Shepard sighed deeply. "No point waiting. Let's go wake our warlord."
