Patrick’s Dilemma
“DoubleSlap Mienfoo! Shadow Defend!” Patrick called. Mienfoo leaped forward and swinging his fists as Shadow, Patrick’s Zoroark, raised his arms in a cross over his front blocking the savage assault. Mienfoo may have been still learning, but his attacks were brutal and surprisingly powerful. Patrick figured it was from the training and the fact that he had been do it since he hatched several weeks ago. “Again Mienfoo!” this time Zoroark buckled under the assault and fell to a knee, feeling he could take no more he pushed out with his arms throwing Mienfoo off, then followed it up with a Night Slash attack sending Mienfoo flying. “Shadow yield!” he called unnecessarily. Zoroark had no intention to follow up again. He dashed over to Mienfoo who failed to rise. He grabbed a potion from his pack and sprayed him with it. His eyes fluttered open and he let out a weak cry. He picked him up and carried him back to the tree to rest. “Shadow what was that all about?”
“Zoroark Zor Zoro.”
“He can’t hurt you. You out match him severely, as you just proved.”
“Zoro.” He replied crossing his arms in annoyance.
“Don’t worry about it, he will be fine.” Slice, his Bisharp was mildly amused by the entire scene playing out before him as he lounged in the branches of the tree.
“Hey kid, want to battle?” That was a challenge he rarely heard nowadays. Few people didn’t know him and the Pokémon he carried, and those that didn’t were soon introduced and sorry for it. He rose from his kneeling position and turned wondering if they were in fact addressing him. Seeing no one else he replied.
“Any rules or just one on one?” After a miscalculated battle a couple weeks back where he barely pulled off a win he thought it better to ask that question before agreeing.
“Just one on one, two apiece.” He pulled out Soldier his Aron, he could take any hit he was given and stand his ground. Wondering who else he should pick the trainer called out his Darmanitan. Slice was on the ground in seconds stepping up to the field.
“Slice no you don’t need to fight.” He turned his head back, his eyes flashed, and he continued to take his place.
“Your Pokémon don’t listen too well do they?”
He really wished people would stop pointing that out. “You’d do well to shut up, you have no idea what he will do to him.” he said gesturing to Darmanitan. Slice held a grudge going back ever since he was brutally assaulted and in a cowardly sneak attack, which unfortunately for his attackers caused him to evolve allowing him to decimate their Pokémon. Darmanitan was one of the Pokémon breeds used in that assault.
“I think we can handle him.” he sneered fist bumping his Darmanitan.
“So be it. Slice you’re up.” He said taking a seat against the tree.
“What are you doing?”
”If you choose to fight him I don’t have to do a damn thing.”
“You’re not taking this serious.”
“Oh I am, you just don’t understand.”
“Fine if you’re not going to fight, I’ll just beat him down.”
“Slice teach.” Slice’s eyes flashed as he started sharping his already razor sharp blades. The trainer was a little taken aback by the command and the Pokémon’s actions now thinking he made a mistake. A guy chosen from the crowd that had gathered reffed the match. He asked the trainer if he was ready and then Slice, which was unusual to ask the Pokémon.
“Go!” he called.
“Fire Punch Darmanitan!” his fist was engulfed in fire. No one in the crowd was at all surprised Patrick took no part in the battle, they knew him and his Slice.
Patrick gave him one order “Teach.” Slice was across the field before Darmanitan had a chance to fully pull back for his punch and the short draw delivered little power as he struck at Slice, barely grazing him. Slice unleashed an unyielding barrage of Metal Claw attacks leaving no chance for Darmanitan to regain his composure as he feebly tried to ward off the lightning fast attacks. After one final strike his head blade glowed and he brought it down in a devastating arc, Darmanitan crumpled to the ground. “Return Slice” he heard Patrick call. He regrettably returned to his trainer. Darmanitan was badly injured. “You really want to continue this match? He’s pretty bad off.” Patrick said looking at the Darmanitan.
“Why afraid you’ll lose?”
“Are you serious? Your Pokémon’s nearly dead and you want to trash talk? You know what I’m calling this match, take your Pokémon and go to the center.”
“You call this match and you lose. You’re a coward.”
“Ok fine, call out you next one.” Patrick said tossing Aron’s ball back into his bag and reaching for the one on his belt marked with a G.
“You’re going to get it know.” He tossed out his Pokémon, a short shaggy dog appeared in the field.
“Stout!” it barked. Patrick nearly fell over laughing.
“You won’t be laughing when he beats you down.”
Patrick composed himself, then said to the crowd. “You might want to move back.” they quickly retreated several feet as did the trainer unconsciously. “You should have taken your chance to leave.” He tossed the ball.
“GOLURK!” the nine foot menace erupted from his poké ball bellowing. He hadn’t had a chance to stretch his legs in days as that takes room and there isn’t a lot free space around.
“On second thought I need to take him to the Pokémon center.”
“Oh no, you wanted this so you’re going to get it.” The warm sun shined down on Golem, but his angle to the sun cased a shadow over the trainer and his Stoutland.
“Stoutland Giga Impact.”
“Golem Catch.” Golem’s hand shot out and plucked Stoutland from midair his attack failing. “Mega Punch.” Golem lightly tossed Stoutland up, as he came level with Golurk’s waist in the descent Golem drove the Mega Punch down on him driving him into the ground at terminal velocity. “Match.” Patrick said with no reason to see if Stoutland would get back up few do against Golem, some have feint defeat to get out of the match.
He was relaxing on the couch when he heard the door rattle and swing open.
“Hey Rachael.” he called before he could even see her. “How was work?”
“How was your battle?” she replied. “How do you know I battled?”
“A trainer brought in a Stoutland with two broken legs and a Darmanitan that looked like it had been sliced to pieces.” She replied. They both glanced at the corner at the sound of the lite chuckle emitted from Slice. Patrick had winced at the broken bone comment. He had left right after the battle, not really caring how the trainer’s Pokémon faired. “Plus I heard some people talking on the street, your name was mentioned, and how you gave him a chance and he didn’t take it.”
“He insulted me, he shouldn’t have.”
“I just want to relax and have a nice meal.” She said. It was then that he noticed the bag she had brought in from the take out joint down the street. “I should have called you but I was too tired so I got you your usual.”
“That’s what I would have told you to get.” They had a fairly quiet meal, neither one saying much. When Rachael finished she headed to the shower and then to bed. Patrick was up for several more hours thinking how to go about his plan.
“Are you CRAZY?!” Lisa cried as she talked to Rachael the next day in the Pokémon center office.
“It’s different now.”
“How?”
“It like we are just going through the motions there is no life there. The passion is gone.”
“That’s no reason to leave him!”
“I don’t see any other option.”
“At least think about it a little longer. If you rush into this you could be making a big mistake.”
* * *
The wildlife park had under gone a restructuring, and Patrick was now the Head Ranger of them all, one of his sub rangers was moved up to head his old sections.
* * *
“Really?” Greg asked. Patrick nodded, he was talking to Jess, Alex, and Greg before work began.
“Yeah I’ve thought about it a lot and I think it’s the best thing to do.”
“I will go with you after work to make sure you don’t get the wrong one.” Jess put in.
“Alright that sounds like a good idea.” Both Jess and Alex gave him and hug and said congratulations. “Don’t get ahead of me here, its not done yet, I have one more thing to take care of before anything happens. Well two but one after you help me out later Jess.”
Rachael had gotten off early and was going to a new eating place that had opened a few days ago. She pulled out her phone. “Hey Patrick I’m going to get something from that new place Maria’s, what do you want me to get you?”
“I’m working late at the park I’ll get something when we are done.”
“Ok I’ll see you when you get home. Bye”
“Bye.” She was about to walk in when she looked down the street and saw him walking towards her with Jess. What the hell? She thought.
He got home three hours after she did. “Hi.”
“Hi.” She replied trying to keep any kind of accusation out of her voice. “How was work today?”
“We had to go over some of the new rules, some of the junior rangers are still making mistakes. That restructure has really changed things.”
“I’ll bet, did you get dinner?”
“Yeah I stopped by Maria’s after work and got something.” He said holding up the bag.
“Well I’m going to head for bed early. I have to go in early tomorrow; it’s my turn to do the Recovery Room Pokémon evaluation. I just wanted to make sure you got home alright.”
“Night.”
“Night.” When he was sure she was gone he called out Mechanicum his Klinklang. “Three days and then the big day are you ready?”
“KLINKLANG!” It rang out in its metallic voice.
“Good I’m counting on you.” He sat down to have his dinner.
“I don’t know what to think.” Rachael said as she walked in to the office. She had gone in early to do the evaluations.
“Me either, what are you talking about?” Lisa asked. Penelope was there too listening.
“I called him yesterday after I got off work and asked him what he wanted from that new restaurant down the street, they both nodded in understanding.
“And he said he was working late something about new rules and junior officers not getting it or some such nonsense. I should have called him on it but I know they are friends and co-workers so maybe I just misunderstood the whole thing and I don’t want to start something out of it if it’s nothing, I could make things worse.”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold on slow down, you lost us.”
“After I called and he said he was working late, I saw him down the street walking towards me talking to Jess.”
“He didn’t see you?” Penelope asked.
“He was too busy talking to Jess. He lied to me, he LIED!”
“Not exactly.” Lisa put in.
“What?”
“They did stay late yesterday, Greg told me. We meet for dinner. Remember he gets off before you and you were off early yesterday, so maybe he didn’t realize you were there maybe he thought you would be here awhile longer.” Rachael looked at her with a questioning look.
“What time did you meet Greg?”
“About seven. An hour after I got off work.”
“Patrick didn’t come home until after nine, three hours! What did he do in that time, it couldn’t have been work.”
“I still don’t think he was cheating on you.” Lisa said.
“This is just eating away at me.” Rachael said.
“Ask him about it, be direct.” Penelope said. They both just looked at her, surprised that suggestion came from her, she was reserved and quiet the last one to be direct.
“I can’t. What if it was nothing? I could turn it into something; he might not think I trust him.” Rachael said. She was conflicted the rest of the day about what to do.
Lisa met Greg at the restaurant for dinner. They were sitting at the table when Lisa said. “What going on with Patrick?”
“What do you mean?”
“Well Rachael is thinking about leaving him she said…What?” she stopped seeing the look of horror on Greg’s face.
“No no no, that’s not good.”
“What?” he leaned in and whispered in her ear, her eyes grew wide.
“Really? When?”
“When he gets everything done. That’s all he will tell us. Listen don’t tell her, just keep her from leaving him. It can’t be too much longer till he’s ready.”
“I’ll do what I can.”
“I’ve made a decision.” She announced when Lisa walked in to the office the next day.
“About what?” she asked absently.
“Patrick.” Her head snapped up.
“What?”
“I’m going to ask him what he was doing with her, why he lied and if I don’t like it, he’s gone.”
“That’s not necessary.” Lisa said.
“Why not?”
“It just so happens that Greg knew what was going on and he told me when I brought it up last night.”
“What then?”
“He was helping her…train her Pokémon, and he didn’t think you would like the idea of him helping her instead of coming home, plus Jess told him not to tell anybody.” Of course Greg had told her none of this but she had to think of something. Penelope walked in at the beginning of the answer. She grabbed her papers and left.
“I guess that makes sense.” Rachael said.
“It’s probably just the stress of getting everything going smooth at the park.” Lisa put in.
“It did happen shortly after that.” Rachael mused.
“You see no worries. I have to go.” she beat a hasty retreat. While Rachael was still thinking on it. Penelope caught Lisa on her way out.
“Is that all it was?”
“No, but I had to tell her something.”
“What is it then?”
“I’ll tell you at lunch.” And she hurried away. That night Patrick came home with pizza for dinner.
“Good day at work? You seem happy.” he asked.
“No just not going to sweat the small stuff. How is the park doing?”
“Coming along nice, the last meeting seemed to finally get through to the junior rangers.”
“How are Jess’s Pokémon?”
“Fine…why do you ask?”
“No reason just thought I’d ask about everybody, and their Pokémon.” She backpedaled.
“They are good. Greg said he got some new ones but he hasn’t brought them in yet.”
“That’s nice.” She said. They finished up dinner.
“I’m going to bed you coming?”
“In a while I have to take care of something first.” He called out Mechanicum. “Tomorrow’s the big day are you ready?
“LANG!”
“Good, sleep well he have a big day ahead of us tomorrow.” He recalled him and headed off to bed.
He woke up, Rachael was gone to work and he was ready for the task ahead of him. He called of Mechanicum. “Are you ready? Today is the day.”
“KLINKLANG” it rang out. He had a quick breakfast and headed out to the airport.
He stood before the massive airplane hangar. Over the door was a Gym Badge symbol. The Pokémon gym. He stepped inside and took a look around. It was open a few people stood between him and the other side, two were dressed as pilots and one was wearing a hardhat. Guess there is no turning back now. He pulled out Mechanicum and Eelektrik, his evolved Tynamo poke balls. He had been training them none stop for days over the past several months, at least when he was off. He would have evolved Eelektrik but it was hard to procure a Thunderstone. He had been expecting some challenges before he fought Skyla, so Eelektrik was to clear the way and Mechanicum was to finish her off.
He approached the first guy, “Stop right there. If you think you can challenge Skyla just like that you are mistaken. You have to get through me first.” He called Eelektrik. The guy called out a Braviary. The battle was short, the Braviary dive bombed him in an aerial ace attack and was struck with a Thunderbolt attack. Eelektrik was quick and slim so every attempt to catch and grab him was futile. Every failed attempt resulted in a thunderbolt attack. Braviary went in for a finally grab and missing him by inches he was struck with the thunderbolt and collapsed to the ground.
He moved on to the next guy. “You think this is going to be that easy you’re mistaken. He was the lite weight.” They sure like to trash talk he thought. He called out a Mandibuzz. Having seen the previous battle he adjusted his fighting technique. Instead of grabs he went for quick air slash attacks. “AIR SLASH! Again, Again, Again,” his opponent yelled. Eelektrik dodged them easily, he was quick and nimble.
“Zap Cannon.” The cannon struck Mandibuzz when he was at the top of the hangar at the apex of his dive. He fell the entire distance slamming into the ground and not moving. Two down Patrick thought.
“He better say something tonight, she looks at a breaking point.” Penelope said glancing back at the office.
“She looks fine.” Lisa said.
“And keep your voice down she might hear you!” Lisa’s phone rang.
Greg Jess and Alex were, all sitting around the break room. “So tonight’s the night?” Alex asked.
“So he told me yesterday. You both are going to be there right?”
“I wouldn’t miss it for the world.” Jess put in.
“How could I miss it?” Alex replied.
“I better tell Lisa I think Penelope might be there too.” Greg picked up his phone and dialed her number.
The next guy surprised Patrick. He called out a Zebstrika. Not quite ready for this surprise but fully prepared he called out Golem. There was no trash talk from this guy, just ready and fight.
“Earthquake Golem.” The Zebstrika seemed to ride it easily.
“That ain’t going to get it kid.” Ah there’s the trash talk Patrick thought and he had quite enough.
“Then bring it!” The got him.
“Wild Charge Bolter!”
“Dynamic Punch Golem.” The worker saw his mistake seconds before the collision. He’d been goaded into the attack and suffered for it. Bolter his Zebstrika was thrown into the wall that was several feet outside the ring.
“Go on kid she's waiting.” As he passed the guy whispered “Good luck.”
He ascended a set of stairs at the rear of the hangar and there waited Skyla. “I see you’ve fought your way through my cronies. I expect you are not going to be lax in your fighting, I ashore you I won’t.” He called out Mechanicum. “Ah, saved your best for me.” she said with a flirtatious smile. “How sweet.” She called out Swoobat. Now it was Patrick’s turn to smile, he had one of these and knew it’s capabilities well as in it was weak against Steel and electric, both served up by Mechanicum.
“Are you ready?” the ref asked. After a nod from each “Fight!”
“Swoobat Psychic.”
“Mechanicum Hyper Beam!” Skyla’s eyes grew wide. Swoobat tried to dodge, but the beam was all encompassing and he couldn’t fly fast enough to escape it. When the blinding light died Swoobat lay on the ground slightly smoking. She recalled him.
“Interesting.” She commented. She called out her next Pokémon it was an Unfezant. A nearly four foot bird, the male form had a pink mask with two sweeping tails starting at the middle sweeping back nearly down half its body length. The female form that now standing before she had nothing, it looked merely to be a giant bird.
“Fight!” the ref called.
“Unfezant Razor Wind.” It glanced off Mechanicum’s body.
“Discharge.” He started to whirl and a whining grew then giant bolts erupted from his body striking Unfezant. She shook it off and took flight.
“Sky Attack.”
“Zap Cannon!” the beam blasted from the green orb on his central gear. It struck Unfezant in the wing causing it to fall. Skyla quickly tossed it a berry which it caught and gulped down. “Gear Grind!” it flew across the ring and caught the Unfezant by the foot and cranking it down crushing it. “Zap Cannon!”
“Air Slash” she cried futilely. The full body strike with Zap Cannon and Unfezant folded over, literally. Mechanicum released and she fell to the ground. “This is my last one.” Skyla said. She tossed out Swanna. At seeing the Pokémon Patrick hope flew he was going to destroy her and win the badge.
“Ready?” the ref called.
“I am, are you? Skyla said ominously. Patrick hesitated for a second then nodded his ready.
“Swanna Hurricane!” She called before he could say a word. The wind swirled around and around. It lifted Mechanicum from his low floating position and flung him into the rafters. He slammed into them, the sound was terrible twisting and ripping metal, Patrick saw a few pieces fall but not his main piece. The ref ruled to her as Mechanicum failed to reappear. “We will get him for you after the fight.”
“Eelektrik go.”
“Ready…Fight!”
“Zap Cannon” he called quickly she was swift and dodged.
“Swanna you are such a Brave Bird.” The move was blindingly fast and devastating. It slammed into Eelektrik and he was down for good.
“Your last one.” she said with a smile. His hopes were falling fast he needed power and that was Golem. He was just about to call him when he realized Swanna was water, Golem was part ground, he’d lose big time. He had one other option. Slice. He popped out swinging.
“You ready to teach?” he started sharping his blades. Teach was a command he learned a year back. It meant teach them you are the best. Unrelenting devastating blows only stop when they are laying on the ground. It was kind of savage but it won fights.
“Ready?” the ref called. They both nodded. “Fight!”
“Slice Teach!” Skyla was confused, teach wasn’t a move she’d ever heard of. Slice charged across the field he was right in front of Swanna when he placed one hand on the ground and double kicked Swanna in the head, following up he rained Metal Claws.
“Take flight.” Skyla called. Swanna spread her wings, Patrick seeing if she did he was lost shouted “Stop her!” the metal blade on Slices head glowed and he smashed her wing with it crippling her. Skyla called the match.
“It’s over.” she called. “You have proven your abilities. I hereby present to you The Jet Badge.” She said handing it to him. Someone came over with Mechanicum in a wheelbarrow, he was mangled. “So how many does that make for you?”
“One.”
“One? It’s your first one?”
“I’m not a trainer it’s just something I had to do. I had to know.”
“Why?”
“Are you free tonight?”
“Yes, why?” “Join me at Maria’s at eight and you can find out.”
“Alright I’ll be there.” “How intriguing.” she added as he walked out.
He walked in the Pokémon center. As soon as Lisa saw she was about to call Rachael but Patrick made a quiet gesture.
“Here fix’em up for me.” he said handing them to her. “You don’t want me to get Rachael?”
“No. there will be questions about who I fought and I don’t want to lie to her.”
“Again.” Lisa put in. “She saw you with Jess the other day. She knows you didn’t work as late as you made it seem.”
“Damn.”
“Don’t worry I created a cover story that saved your ass.”
“You’re great Lisa.”
“I know.”
“I’ve got to go, there are a couple more things to do before tonight.” He left.
“Who was that?” Rachael asked coming out of the door seeing just a flash of someone’s back.
“Just a trainer dropping off his Pokémon.” Lisa replied.
He already had the reservations for tonight but he called to add one more, luckily they had no problem with that. The match at the gym had taken longer than it seemed, it was a little past lunch, so he picked up a quick bite and headed back home.
He was sitting on the couch when Rachael got home. She walked in and put her purse down. “I’m tired.” She said.
“I hope not to tired I got reservations for dinner tonight.”
“Where?”
“Maria’s.”
“That means I have to dress up, I don’t really want to go out.” Then she noticed he was already dressed in his good suit, minus the tie. “I guess that means I have too?” she asked gesturing to his suit.
“No, but it might be awkward if you weren’t there.”
“What?”
“Just get ready and you can find out.” She was very curious; she hadn’t seen him like this in a long time, she hoped their spark had reignited. She came out wearing her green dress, her hair out of their ponytails and cascading down her back. It was about seven thirty, so he led her out the door.
They arrived at the restaurant twenty minutes later. Lisa, Greg, and Jess were all waiting outside. “Alex said she might be a little late.” Jess said.
“And here comes Penelope.” Lisa said pointing down the road.
“Why are they all here?” Rachael inquired.
“Wait and see.” Was the response she got. His parents arrived as they were being seated and Skyla walked in shortly after that. Everyone saw her and gasp. She was usually dressed in her gym leader outfit, but tonight she had on a sky-blue dress and her hair in curls.
“I wonder who she’s meeting here?” Lisa whispered to Greg. Patrick stood up and waved her over. Alex was right behind her.
“Why is she here with us?” Rachael asked, this was getting crazy to her. All her friends, his friends and parents, plus the local gym leader. As they ate their dinner there was much to talk about. All other conversations died when Skyla who was talking to Greg said his Klinglang was flung to the ceiling and got tangled in the beams. They all looked at her then at Patrick.
“What?” he asked knowing fully what they were going to ask.
“You challenged the Gym!?” Jess asked.
“Yes.”
“And you won?”
“I don’t know, doesn’t sound like it from that story, let’s hear the rest.” He said. Skyla finished the battle report.
“I was surprised I’ve never seen a Pokémon respond to a command that was a preplanned fighting strategy.”
“Hey that’s my idea.” Greg said looking in Patrick direction.
“I know, thanks.”
“He would have killed my Swanna had I not stopped the fight.”
“I would have called him back before he killed.”
“Why did you challenge the gym?” Rachael asked.
“It was something I had to do.”
“Why?”
“I was going to wait till later but…” he pulled the box from his jacket and took a knee.
“I’ve known you for a while now and I can’t imagine what I’d be doing if I hadn’t met you. You were the one bright spot in an otherwise dark world, so will you be with me always and marry me?” Rachael’s eyes filled with tears, she was crying and EVERY eye from the restaurant was now looking in his direction. Time ticked by “starting to feel a little awkward here.” He mumbled.
Finally she grabbed him around the neck and cried “YES!” the restaurant cheered.
“Thank God.” he breathed.
As things settled back down “Is that why you have been acting so weird and lying to me?” She asked staring right at him.
“Yes, Jess was helping me pick out a ring she thought she knew you well enough.”
“I do love it, thanks Jess.”
“Anything for a friend.” She replied with a smile.
“But wait, Lisa told me you were helping her train her Pokémon, you said Greg told you.”
“I did? Was I drunk?” Greg asked.
“No, I lied to you. If I didn’t we wouldn’t be sitting here right now. You’d still be crying but for a different reason.” She had no need to say why, they all knew.
“How did you know?” Patrick asked her.
“Greg told me.” Lisa said.
“So everyone here knew?” Patrick asked, they all nodded except for Skyla.
“I didn’t.” she put in.
“At least that’s one.” The smaller conversations broke back out as they finished their meal, Patrick paid the bill and they all started to leave.
“Thank you for inviting me I don’t get to get out much.” Skyla said. “I’d love a rematch some time.”
“I don’t know if Mechanicum can take another beating like that, he still clinks a little.” They laughed at his joke. Congratulations were given to them and then they headed home.
They sat on the couch to relax. “So why did you really challenge the gym?”
“I had to prove to myself that it was time, if I couldn’t beat her then I wasn’t ready, and I didn’t deserve you.”
“You damn near lost me, the way you were acting. I was talking to Lisa and Penelope and they said I should ask you straight out. If I did what would you have said?”
“I would have had to make something up, and I hate lying to you. I don’t like the fact that I had to do it that once. I don’t ever want you to think you can’t believe or trust me. I love you too much.”
“I love you too, let’s go to the bedroom and I can show you how much.” She said pulling him along.
