It was innocent, the illusion on that day long ago, In that short dream, under the sun, it gently stroked my hair.
Your frightened eyes, treasures unknowing of filth, I carry a painful fever that pierces my chest.
Why does it continue in my chest? I’m searching for something true, a thing prettier than a promise.

-I'll spare you reinterating everything that happened before Start here from after Zelda sends the real Link to his own timeline-
Our world however is not that time.
Zelda dropped her arm to her side, the Ocarina of Time still in her hand. Dark Link walked up behind her. Black hair and red eyes the only difference between him and the hero that stood there moments before. Link wrapped his arms around her and kissed the base of her neck. “We’ll be fine without him. Gannon is gone, the people will rebuild and move on.”
“I know.” Zelda sighed softly. She slipped the Ocarina into her pocket and turned to face the man. He smiled at her and kissed her, his hand resting on her cheek.
Zelda’s hand came out of her pocket and in a flash rested on his chest. Dark Link’s body jerked and he looked at her in pain. Zelda opened her eyes and was crying. “I’m sorry….” She whispered.
Dark Link smiled, his eyes turned from red to blue. “Zelda, I love you.” He said and petted her hair down a bit, before his eyes grew dark and he fell over.
Zelda fell to her knees, sobbing into her hands before the body of Dark Link, a kunai planted firmly into his chest by the princess he loved. “I love you too…” She sobbed, now second guessing her decision. She smiled and crawled over, placing her hand on his cheek, it was already growing cold. She curled up next to him and sobbed into his hair until she could cry no more.
--
Months later the palace was rebuilt and Zelda was obviously showing that she was carrying a child. Zelda claimed it was the child of the Hero of Time and no one judged her for it. Zelda was made into a Queen and continued her days. Her personality though had become more drawn in as she tried every day to convince herself she did what was right for the kingdom.
--
She was a good mother, and named her son Link after his father. He was three now and all the damage Ganon had done was finally cleaned out of the kingdom.
Little Link took much from his mother as some boys will, her flowing blond hair, her royal blue eyes. No one doubted his heritage and he was treated well.
She’d often walked into his room however to find him talking to himself. She had become worried, however the maidens in waiting told her all children will have imaginary friends to play with, especially only children.
She’d asked him one day who he had been talking to, he simply responded. “I is payn wiff incg” So she’d shrugged it off. From then on she’d tried to pay more attention to her son thinking that was the problem.
--
When he turned six he would start running off to play on his own spending less time with his mother. She once asked him who he would play with if he was alone, he answered he played with himself and it was fun.
--
When he turned eight however Zelda found Link in the courtyard she used to stay in when she was a little girl. He was training with a sword and seemed to be fighting against himself. Zelda ran in rather quickly for a queen and pulled the sword from him. “Who gave you this?!” She started. “I found it.” Her son answered.
Zelda stuck it so it remained standing in the grass and kneeled down holding her son’s shoulders. “You shouldn’t play with swords, it isn’t befitting a young prince, maybe when you are older you can. Besides, you shouldn’t play with it when no one has taught you.” She was trying to be kind to the young boy since he didn’t know better.
“Someone is teaching me though mom.” Link said politely back to his mother. Zelda looked confused, none of her knights would be stupid enough to go behind her back. “Who baby?” She asked softly.
Link’s expression never faltered. “Father is teaching me.” Zelda was shocked for a few moments. “Baby, your dad went back to his world we’ve been over---“ “No he didn’t!” Link shouted. “He’s right here, he has always been right here! It’s not my fault none of you believe me!” Link ran over grabbing the sword from the grass before running out of the room leaving a dumbfounded Zelda.
The queen fell back off of her knees so she was sitting on her butt staring off after her son, a hand in the air as if she could stop him from running off. A few seconds after she could swear she felt someone petting her hair. Her tears started to fall no matter how numb she felt at that moment. Shortly after she heard her son shout “Come on dad!” and the feeling left her.
“Don’t leave me…” She whispered out softly. Zelda collapsed into sobs on the grass, not caring if anyone saw her, or if she got grass stains on her dress. She now knew this was no imaginary friend, but the ghost of a father who never got to hold his son. It was her fault, and he had no idea.
Zelda felt more alone in that moment than she had her entire life, mourning a man she’d killed, and the son that they shared.
