“What are you doing?” said Hawke, trying to keep her composure as one of Sebastian's minions shoved her through the streets of Hightown towards the central square, where a long flight of stairs led up to the Viscount's palace and where the Chantry had once stood.
“Quiet, apostate!” the shoving minion spat. A crowd was gathering, some hostile and most curious, and it worried Hawke to see how many faces she recognized. There was no one from her crew, no one that would help her – Fenris and Anders were in hiding, Isabella was back on the water, but Varric could be somewhere nearby.
“Looking for the dwarf?” another minion sneered. “He's with the Inquisition. Our Lord sent word to them for aid in retaking this city and bringing order back.”
“This won't bring order,” Hawke said, staring the man in the eye. He backhanded her, knocking her so that she fell hard to the ground, landing roughly on her shoulder. to her knees.
“She was trying to ensorcell me,” the man said. There were some people in the crowd that looked like they might try something, but bows were drawn and arrows notched.
“You know me!” Sebastian called. “I am the Prince Starkhaven, and I am here to restore order! Your Viscount is dead, and your Champion betrayed the Templars and the Chantry, kicking off a war that even now ravages all Thedas! I am here to restore order!
“This woman is an apostate! She has been in the Fade itself, which is no place for a Maker-fearing woman to go! Need I remind you all of the Black City? Your Champion would repeat the Magisters' mistakes, has spared the man who destroyed the Chantry, and unlawfully executed Knight-Commander Meredith from executing her duty!”
“Meredith would have killed all the mages!” someone in the crowd called.
“No, she would have made them Tranquil with the Rite of Annulment!” Sebastian retorted. “It is the final, most merciful, and best solution for those born with magic in their souls! It purifies them, as your Champion has been purified!”
That proclamation turned all eyes to Hawke – she could feel them as she was pushed closer to Sebastian, as he gripped her around the waist.
“I offered you a pure love, once,” he whispered. “I'm sorry I couldn't save you and that it has come to this.”
“I was your friend,” Hawke growled, struggling to escape his grasp. “I helped you when you needed it...”
“I am helping you, Hawke,” Sebastian said. “The Chantry is clear on what must be done with apostates. This is all the mercy my faith can offer you.”
“You don't know what you're talking about,” Hawke said. She met his eyes. “There's something going on here, something wrong...”
“On that, we agree,” he said, his smile sad, “but I will make it right.”
He pulled a dagger from his belt and thrust it towards her, underneath and through her belt, then through the two buckles that held the jacket closed. His minions unstrapped the shoulder and armor as he untied the final clasp, pulling open the armor she wore and exposing the slim shirt she wore underneath.
“don't do this,” said Hawke.
“It's for your own good,” he said, slicing through her shirt. “We might still save your soul.”
Her armor had been designed to protect from damage coming from outside itself, but it proved much more vulnerable to knives thrust through it from the inside. Sebastian and his minions cute the jacket to pieces, ripped the ragged remains of her shirt from her body and tossed them aside, cut off her bra and exposed her. She flushed furiously, wishing that her magic would answer her but still her power was silent.
“Now?” one of his minions asked. Sebastian nodded as the man stepped forward and clasped Hawke's breast, massaging the nipple. She shrieked outrage and tried to kick him, but the man ignored her efforts as Sebastian held her steady, pinching and twisting, and she could feel her face flush as her nipple hardened.
Vision clouded with tears, Hawke tried to hold Sebastian's gaze and failed. She saw her tormentor bringing something close to her breast and then
pain
She bucked, howled, kicks and screamed as something bit into her breast, sending waves of pain through her body. The sharpness of it surprised her, but it quickly subsumed into a dull and constant ache. Panting heavy breaths, she looked down at the cause and caught sight of some metal device strapped to her chest, kissing her nipple, a long line dribbling down from it.
“What is...?” she whimpered, but her only answer was the man beginning to play with her other breast. She bucked and kicked, knowing what was coming, but Sebastian wrestled her to the ground and one of his minions sat on her legs while he held her and the man with the device continued to pinch and twist and massage.
She spat powerless curses, trying to fight and free herself, was even begging when the small metal object came closer to her quivering flesh. The man brushed it against her, enjoying her pain, drawing it out until Sebastian told him to get on with it and
pain
The same again. The same terrible agony fading into a dull ache. She was released and curled into herself, crying, trying to get the cursed things off or to alleviate any of the constant simpering hurt that ruled her existence.
“Get up,” Sebastian commanded, nudging her spine with his boot. She ignored him, but then felt a pull on both her breasts that made her cry out. Through her tears, she looked up and saw that he had taken the lines that dripped from the metal devices that were causing her so much distress, that he was pulling them up and her along with them.
Wincing, weeping, Hawke got to her knees and then further up, standing. Sebastian handed the twin lines to his cohort, the one that had placed the Maker-cursed things on her, and notched an arrow. He tied the lines to the back of the arrow and Hawke began to panic, shaking her head and begging, but Sebastian looked at her with cool eyes.
“You brought this on yourself,” he said, then aimed up and fired the arrow.
It went up and over one of the golden gargoyles, looping and coming back down. He did not fire at full strength – for which Hawke praised the Maker and his bride – and there was even some slack remaining in the line, though he took care of that by pulling and tying the line off, pulling her up and forcing her onto the balls of her feet.
“And now,” Sebastian said, sighing as if this were hurting him, “penance.”
