Chapter 5
When Aleena appeared in the palace again just a few days after their first meeting, Robotnik was surprised. But he saw the smile and knew she had news. “I found them. Well, my sons found them. But when their medallions came together, I was able to pinpoint them.”
The old man nodded. “Where?”
She smiled. “Acorn. Come, I’ll use my magic to take us there.” Aleena extended her hand to him.
He nodded. “Yes, but when we get there we should approach separately. We don’t want them to feel as though we are ganging up on them.” He could hardly believe that he was now working with the woman he’d once envisioned turning into yet another robot slave. He needed her help now. Determinedly, he took the soft, purple hand in his much larger one.
Bartleby finally returned to the apartment, wiping his brow. “Well, your engine is shot. I’ve ordered a new one but it’ll be a few days before it’s here. I’d invite you to stay the night here but we only have the one room.”
Sonia looked at Sonic. “And how is the engine shot? Sonic…” She asked her brother pointedly as she brought a plate of food to her husband, piping hot from the oven.
Sonic nodded. “Does it really matter. Your hubby is fixing it. We had no idea he was so talented. We could have really used him back home.”
The mink ate his meal hungrily. The work always left him with a massive appetite. “So my dear… have you told your brothers the news yet?” He asked.
Sonia giggled. “No, not yet. I was waiting for you so we could tell them together.”
Sonic and Manic looked at them as they shared an excited smile. “What’s going on?” Manic asked before seeing Bartleby’s hand on her stomach. “Oh my gods. That is great!”
Sonic quickly reached the same conclusion. “Well, how quick was that? You’ve only been married half a year.”
Bartleby blushed while Sonia giggled. “Trust me, he is anything but quick.” She said with a look at her husband who only blushed deeper.
Manic stuck out his tongue in disgust. “Did not need to know that. But sheesh, thank you for pleasing our sister so.” He shuddered.
He chuckled as he kissed her hand. “I love her Manic. How could I not do everything in my power to please her and care for her.” He pulled Sonia into his arms and kissed her deeply.
Sonic stood. “On that note, I think we should go get a hotel room.” He said.
Sonia smiled at her brothers. “I wish we had room to offer you here but, trust me, you don’t want to stay the night. But there is an inn just around the corner. They offer a lovely bed and breakfast.”
The brothers hugged their sister and bid them farewell before taking her husband to their bed, needing time with him. She could also sense that he needed some stress relief.
Bartleby lit some candles and got a bottle of champagne out of the fridge. “Have I told you how much I love you my dear. I think the gods everyday for you.”
Sonia blushed as she got into a new silk, red, translucent negligee. She looked up when she heard a knock at the door. “Hmm? I wonder if they forgot something?” She asked.
Bartleby chuckled. “I’ll go answer it my darling. You just get comfortable.” He went to the door and opened it. Fear filled his eyes briefly before it was replaced with ire. Swiftly, he slammed the door and went back to the bedroom. “It’s him. It’s him.” He trembled as they heard the door open.
Sonia nodded. “It’s okay darling. It’s okay. You don’t have to see him. I’ll handle it.” She didn’t bother with a robe. This was her home and she was married. If Robotnik wanted to break in, he would get them as they were. She stomped out to the living room and saw her sitting on her sofa. She saw his eyes open wide as he seemed to realize what he’d walked into. “What do you want Buttnik?”
Robotnik looked at her sharply. “I have come to see Bartleby. Not you.” He said simply. He would not explain himself to his enemy. She was the one who stole him away.
She shook her head. “Then you can just leave. Because he doesn’t want to see you. And you have no right to demand that he do so.”
“I raised that boy! I think in that time that I have earned enough credit to have a chance to defend myself.” He reasoned.
“I don’t agree. After what you did. You are the worst man in history. You took what love he had for you and you threw it away. You don’t get any kind of chance. If and when he wants to give you that chance, you’ll get it. But until then, you need to leave. And you need to leave now.” She told him, a fire burning in her eyes. “Or… you know what. I don’t care, do whatever you want… You will anyway. Stay here, leave, I don’t care. I’m going to go be with my husband. And we will be doing married things.” She grinned as she trailed off, allowing the man to realize what she meant. She went back to the bedroom, closing and locking it.
Robotnik attempted to wait it out. He was determined not to leave without having spoken to the boy. But the sounds coming from the bedroom were too much and he had no choice but to leave with a growl. But he would bide his time. He would not leave the city without the chance to make things right.
The next morning, Sonia and Bartleby were relieved to find he had gotten the hint. She pet his hair gently. “Told you it would work my love. We cannot allow him to affect us any longer…”
The mink nodded as he held onto her for support. “Yes my love. You are right. He cannot be allowed to affect us. I won’t let him affect me.” He kissed her tenderly. “How about I make our breakfast this morning?”
She giggled. “Pancakes and sausage?” She requested. “Oh and melon. The baby needs some fruit.” She frowned as she heard a knock at the door. Except it was lower on the door. “I’ll take care of it, dear. Go ahead and make breakfast.” She didn’t think it was Robotnik but the man was crafty. She peaked out the peephole. “Oh my gosh!” She swung the door open and put her arms around the woman there. “Mother!”
Aleena smiled and laughed as she hugged her daughter. “My daughter! My daughter! I’ve found you at last.” She wept gently but happily.
Sonia nodded as she pulled her mother inside before looking around suspiciously. Quickly, she locked the door behind them. “Robotnik found us last night too. We have no idea how but he’s not welcome here.”
Aleena nodded. “Understandable dear. But I must take responsibility for that. You see, I told him.”
Sonia frowned. “Why would you do that?” She asked as they went into the kitchen. “Bartleby, it’s mother. She found us.”
Bartleby looked at the purple hedgehog with suspicion. He didn’t know this woman who called his dear one, daughter. “Yes and I heard her say she told him where we were.”
Aleena looked at him with a motherly smile. “Believe it or not, we’ve been working together to find you. So when your brothers found you, bringing all three medallions together, and I was able to pinpoint your location… Well, it would have been wrong not to tell him.”
Sonia shrugged. “He attempted to force Bartleby to talk to him last night. I wouldn’t let him harass my husband of course. Make sure he knows that he is not to come here uninvited again. We will be informing our landlord and Bartleby’s boss about him. If he wants to talk to Bartleby then he needs to give Bartleby the right to choose to talk to him. He cannot force his way here.”
Aleena nodded. “I will tell him. I do understand and I would not force you to talk to me if you did not wish it. Now, I want to know, how is everything going for you two. It’s been so long since I’ve seen you my dear.”
The three sat down to a nice breakfast of the pancakes and sausage that Bartleby made for them. They told her of everything they had been up to since they left Robotropolis. The former queen listened to the stories and felt a great joy fill her chest as they informed her of their most recent blessing. When she left the apartment, she felt satisfied that her daughter was happy and cared for. It was a humble life, not one she’d pictured for her. She’d envisioned grand balls and gowns to go with them. She’d dreamed of her daughter marrying the rich son of a lord. She’d still done that but they had chosen a dream of a smaller scale. It was enough. The happiness in their faces were genuine.
Bartleby went down to work after his mother-in-law left. One of the regulars was already there with his sedan for an oil change. As he went through his normal day, he worked hard to focus only on the work and not the knowledge that his greatest fear was in the city.
However, when he looked up from his midday meal he frowned. “Rotor!” He said alarmed.
The walrus looked up from his own sandwich and at the red-mustached man who had his protege so tense. He nodded. “Eat your lunch Bartleby and get to work on Miss Jenkin’s car. Pretend he is not here.” Rotor got up and went out to greet the man. “What can I do for you sir? Do you have a vehicle that needs work?” He asked.
Robotnik shook his head. “I am here to speak with Lord Bartleby Montclair of Dresden. Your mechanic.”
Rotor shook his head. “He’s busy on other projects. He doesn’t have time to speak with the likes of you. And if you try to bother him, I will send for the Watch.” He promised before proceeding to ignore the man and go on with his own work. He went to Bartleby. “If he stays and watches quietly, let him. Don’t give him your peace. Forget him. He’s not here.”
Bartleby nodded as he forced himself to only see the carburetor in front of him. “Yes… Miss Jenkins needs a new carburetor. This one is dead. And the brakes on the Roberts’ minivan are completely worn down. I thought you were going to talk to him about riding his brakes? I swear we just fixed them two months ago.”
Rotor sighed. “You know what they say, you can lead a horse to water. You’re getting good at this.” The walrus smiled with pride.
Robotnik watched as the blonde focused on his job. He had not known Bartleby remembered the small lessons he’d given the boy in his youth. His hands didn’t seem made for such work but he knew what he was talking about and with the walrus’ guidance, he knew where everything went and how to fix each problem he came up against. It should have been him teaching him these things. It should have been him training Bartleby. It should have been him…
