Out in the hall, Starr found herself walking behind Shin as opposed to beside him. Nathavin held that privilege. Or was it Shin who had the privilege of walking beside Nathavin? She snorted softly, earning herself a stern glare from Aleyel who informed her to be quiet and keep her head down while they were moving through the corridors.
Meanwhile, Nathavin questioned Shin. “Why give her the cloak? Thiefiell is suspicious of you as it is, giving her a cloak will just give him more reason to wonder about your sincerity in this.”
“She didn’t ask for this. I carelessly brought her here.” Shin snapped, still angered from earlier, although he couldn’t figure out why.
“Slaves don’t get clothes to make them comfortable!” As they continued, the corridor opened up into a large chamber. The cavern ceiling rose high above them and light was provided by way of magic. Passing various shops and merchants, Nathavin gestered with his hand at the many and varied people, servants, and slaves collected in the wide chamber as his voice lowered. “None of the servants or slaves have been given a cloak. Only yours!”
Shin’s gaze swept over the other slaves that he could see. Nathavin was right. Most of them were wearing tattered and ill fitting clothes, at least the men were. The women were dressed provocatively, much like Aleyel had dressed Starr, and some wore even less. None of them had a cloak designed to keep them warm, let alone shielded from view. With a careless shrug, he replied. “If they want others to look at their slaves with longing, so be it. I don’t want anyone looking at her.”
Nathavin swore colorfully. “Is she a simple slave? A bedwarmer? A comfort woman? Shin! Whatever she is to you, you must treat her as if she is nothing and no one you’d be overly concerned about protecting!”
“Enough!” Shin snapped viciously. “I will do this my way!” Except, he wasn’t sure what that way was yet. By now, they’d reached the temple and were standing at the base of the steps that led into the hallowed structure. Their argument had attracted the attention of the guards and persons nearby and Shin swore softly as he realized that fact.
Aleyel leaned close to Starr. “This is where Nathavin and I can no longer go with you. Whatever you do, obey Shin. The guards in there will not think twice about killing you. Or Shin.” As Shin turned to face them, she backed away from the light elf.
“Eyes up.” Shin muttered as he reached out and pulled the hood of the cloak off her head. Furious icy blue eyes glared up at him. Pausing, he wondered if he should tell her to try to appear more calm. He decided against it. Slowly, he unfastened the cloak from her throat and pushed it off her shoulders into the waiting hands of Aleyel. “Do nothing. Say nothing. Speak to no one except me. If someone addresses you, look to me for permission to reply. These are the rules you…and I… will either live or die by. Understood?”
Starr’s enraged glare turned ever colder as she answered. “Understood.” The moment the cloak had fallen away from her, the small audience they’d gained during Shin and Nathavin’s argument gasped. A low murmuring had filled the air and slowly everyone had begun to stare at them.
At her.
It was humiliating.
As they climbed the stairs, she could feel the searing gaze of the male guards. They were too professional to comment, but not so professional that thier eyes didn’t wander. Shin noticed as well, but bit the inside of his cheek. Thiefiell would be worse. The old priest would actually put his filthy hands on her.
The large double doors swung open soundlessly and the two walked inside the temple. The doors silently closed again, causing Starr to wonder at the enchantment that operated them. The doors appeared to be solid stone, which meant that they had to be impossibly heavy.
Keeping pace with Shin, she followed him to the far end of the chapel. An old, grizzled dark elf stared at them intently. His robes easily identified him as Thiefiell, the one the others were so worried about. Her gaze darkened. It was because of him that this whole charade was being put on.
Remembering herself, she cast her eyes downward just as Shin turned to her. The two held an intense conversation in dark elvish. Then she sensed Shin step away from her.
Thiefiell stepped forward toward the light elven woman. Stepping carefully around Shin, he studied her. For a light elf, she was rather unremarkable. Of course, none of the light elves possessed traits that would be considered noteworthy. So, it was hardly a revelation that he found her to be rather commonplace.
Nor was it a surprise to find that Shin had taken her in.
He stepped closer to her, invading her personal space. “What is it about them that you find so enthralling?” Thiefiell inquired. “They are weak, almost to the point of frailty.”
Shin’s gaze never wavered from her. One wrong move on her part would end them both. And if the ever so slight tremor in her ears were any indication, she was on the verge of doing something she shouldn’t. “They are weak, there is no denying that.” He agreed aloud. “However, I still think that they are worth saving.”
Thiefiell snorted in derision, letting the comment go and instead asked another question. “Why keep this one?” His hand pushed her hair back so that he could get a clearer look at her face. When she kept her head down, he reached for her chin and pulled upward. “Come, slave. Look at me.”
Starr grit her teeth so hard she thought they’d break. But she breathed out from between her tightly clenched teeth and resisted the pulling on her chin.
Meanwhile, Shin’s breath hitched the moment Thiefiell had spoken to her. For a terrifying second, he’d thought for sure that he was going to die. And then, Starr’s head lifted upwards and he could see her eyes.
His heart sank. They were going to die.
“Let go of me.” Starr hissed angrily.
