Takara sucked in a deep breath, then let it out slowly. She did it again, trying to slow down her wildly beating heart.
The dead dog jumping up against the window did nothing to calm her nerves.
I will not panic. I will not start having hysterics. Most importantly she was not going to throw up. The smell was bad enough. She didn’t need to add to it.
Alright, she thought once she got her breathing back under control. Time for a plan.
First, she needed to get her knife back. She grimaced at the thought. Sure, she was being trained to be a professional assassin. That didn’t involve weird, psychopathic training where she watched bodies decompose or anything.
I’m going to throw up. No, she couldn’t do that. The smell was bad enough. She really didn’t need to add to it.
Bracing herself, she reached over the seat and extracted her knife. The noise it made almost made her gag.
While she was leaning over she checked the steering column. There were no keys in the ignition. It’s old enough. She was pretty sure that she could hot wire it.
First she was going to do a survey of the car. She really wanted another weapon. A baseball bat would be enough. Just something other than her knife.
She checked the back seats, glad to see that they folded down and gave access to the trunk.
Ugh. Dirty socks. This was obviously a teen age boy’s car. She hadn’t looked to closely at the decomposing zombie, but she was fairly certain it had been wearing a varsity jacket.
Takara jerked the spare tire out of the way. There was no tire iron that she could see.
Keep searching.
There was a gym bag, but it contained only dirty clothes. She zipped it up again quickly, tossing over her shoulder. It was then that she spotted it.
A gun case. She jerked it towards her swiftly.
The boy was a hunter, had probably been one for years considering the area.
Not anymore. Not if he was the boy in the front seat, she corrected herself. The body could have belonged to someone else, although the chances were slim.
Don’t think about it, Takara ordered herself. She pushed all of her stray thoughts in to a box. Later there would be time to deal with them.
She finally managed to unsnap the stubborn gun case. She flipped the lid open, revealing one hand gun.
A gun. That was it?!
She released the clip, thanking whatever deity that it was actually loaded. She had had six shots. There were only four dogs. That I saw.
Without light she couldn’t make out much. She knew there was one dog jumping at the window, and another circling. The other two had to be out there as well.
I could just wait. One of those three morons will tell somebody. The compound will send help.
But did she really want to stake her life on that? She flip off the safety and chambered one of the bullets. She searched through the gun case, but found no more ammo.
What the hell was he doing with this things? That was another thought to ponder at a later date.
What she needed to ponder now was what the Hell are those dogs doing?
The one that had been jumping against the car wasn’t now. She could still hear them moving around outside, but couldn’t see them. I need light.
Man, she did not want to reach over that seat again. Luckily she didn’t have to. She spotted a flash tucked in to the pouch in the back of the driver’s seat.
She flicked it on, lining it up with the gun. She took a deep breath to steady herself. When her hands had stopped shaking, she used the flash light to sweep the area.
The dogs were over by the tree line, sniffing at the air. She swallowed rapidly as acid churned in her stomach. They looked almost like hunting dogs standing like they were. Grotesque hunting dogs that had been skinned.
Ew, was the only word chorusing through her head.
Suddenly one of the dogs turned back towards the car. The light caught the glare of its eyes for a moment. Then it was moving. Running towards the car.
Takara let her training guide her hands. The gun was lined up just in front of the running mutt. She pulled the trigger, ignoring the breaking glass.
The dog went down with a pained yip.
It did not get back up.
She moved her arms, adjusting her aim. She squeezed the trigger again and again. Two more dogs fell. She moved on to the last.
It was still looking out in to the woods. She pulled the trigger one last time. It dropped, but she kept the flash light pointing in that direction.
Full night had definitely set in. The small beam of light just made the shadows seem that much deeper. She struggled to keep calm. Struggled not to freak herself out.
A figure slowly limped in to view. First came ragged tennis shoes, dirty and scuffed up. Whoever it was, they were limping badly.
Each step revealed a little more of the figure. Muddy, wet jeans, that were ripped on one knee. There was blood on that knee, and more dirt. It obscured the flesh too much for her to tell if the skin was discolored like the thing in the front seat’s had been.
T-shirt, varsity jacket, they were in the same condition as the jeans. No major rips or tears on them though.
The flashlight finally revealed a face.
A very alive, non bloated face. No sunken eyes, no discoloration that came with death. Just a nice, normal, face.
Takara scrambled for the door handle. It took her a few tries before she finally managed to open in.
“Shit Mike! What the Hell have you been doing while I was gone?”
“I’m not Mike,” she said, jogging towards him. He was checking out the dogs, looking as nauseas as she felt.
“Who the Hell ARE you?”
“My name is Takara, and we really don’t have time for this. We need to get out of these woods.”
“ What are you talking about? My friends…that‘s they‘re car.…”
“Not anymore.”
“What?!” She hadn’t meant it to sound so harsh, but they didn’t have time. She could hear sticks cracking, leaves crinkling. A heavy shuffle and low groaning sound that no animal would make.
She checked the gun. There were only two bullets left. She wanted to save them for any more dogs that could be around.
“We have to go look for them!”
“No!” Absolutely not. She was not going to wander around the woods. Not tonight, and not without a lot more fire power. “If they’re alive, we can’t do anything for them. Not with those rabid dogs running around.”
“We can’t just leave them!”
“We’ll go to my home. We can call the police from there.” The boy looked reluctant. Until a howl sounded just off to their left.
“Let’s go!”
