Chapter Warnings: Spoiler alert! If you have not played Grand Theft
Auto: Liberty City Stories, do not read this story.
This chapter also includes swearing. As this story progresses, the rating may
go up.
All characters and events in this story are
fictitious, and any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or events that resemble or are in the same way in any stories or fanfictions,
are purely coincidental.
Notes: Finally, a longer chapter! But, I suppose this would
a lousy mission for Toni, just to drive two sisters around town. In case you’re
wondering, Loderigo
Gelsi is the name of the made man Toni killed in 1994 before laying low for
four years (his name is never really given so I made it up) and I totally
forgot that Ma calls Toni after completing Smash and Garb, so I added it at the
beginning of this chapter. A fat lot of good YouTube was for that!
Extra notes: I was juts thinking, if Carah had been in the game,
what would her initial be if her missions were available to Toni? I mean, C was
taken by Ma and J was taken by JD. I was thinking V, due to Carah’s nickname
form her father (Valentine, due to the fact she was born on Valentines Day),
but V was taken by Vincenzo. Oh well, I guess Rockstar probably would have
found an answer.
Many thanks to YouTube, Grand Theft Wiki and, of
course, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty
City Stories game for
helping me with the actions and script and such.

Chapter 7 –
The Dress
"Toni?
It's your Ma! How long have you been in town? Why don't you come and see me?
What's wrong with you? I'm your mother for her holiness sake! Come on!"
Toni went back to
Vincenzo’s warehouse a few hours later to see Carah seated in Vincenzo’s lap in
his big chair, twiddling a strand of hair between her thumb and index finger
and smiling down at her fiancé as he spoke. He felt his irritation nerve twitch
at the sight of them again, letting his nails dig into his palm as his hand
screwed into a fist, and walked up to Vincenzo’s desk, both of oblivious to his
presence until he cleared his throat and Carah looked up.
“Oh, Toni!” She
looked up at him in surprise, her face fallen, and jumped Vincenzo’s lap,” How
are you?” she asked politely, pulling down the ridden edges of her black pencil
skirt.
Toni raised his
eyebrows, “I’m good,”
“If that’s the
case…,”Vincenzo spoke up and turned his chair to face Toni and Carah,”…You can
drop Carah off at the wedding boutique to her dress fitting,”
“If that’s
alright, of course,” Carah added politely, rolling up the sleeves of her white
button-up shirt.
Toni looked back
at her, wondering why she was avoiding eye contact with him. She rolled her
sleeves up to her elbows and looked directly at Toni, straight in his eye like
their moment before. He realised she felt uncomfortable towards him, but why?
“You’ll have to
pick up Rozelle on the way,” Vincenzo said, breaking their focus on eachother.
“Rozelle?” Toni
questioned, creasing his eyebrows at Vincenzo, then at Carah.
“My sister, Roxanne, who’s also my bridesmaid,”
Carah looked pointedly at Vincenzo, crooking an eyebrow at him but not hiding
back a grin.
Vincenzo merely shrugged and smiled back at
his girlfriend, smiling cockily,” Rozelle kinda stuck,”
“Alright then,
I’ll take you to your dress fitting,” Toni muttered stately and walked promptly
out of the warehouse, followed by Carah after she grabbed her handbag and
planted a kiss on Vincenzo’s lips.
“Where does your
sister live?” Toni asked as he entered his Hellenbach GT.
“We live together,
so we’ll be going back to my apartment,” Carah replied as she joined him inside
the car.
Toni started the
car and tied into traffic scattered on the road. He drove up into Trenton and kept on the road opposite the Callahan Bridge as Carah pulled out her cell
phone and dialled a number. She lifted it up to ear and listened to the dial
tone until her younger sister answered.
“Hello?” answered a sleepy voice.
“Hey, it’s me. I
didn’t wake you, did I?” Carah asked warily as they passed the Callahan Bridge
and drove into Chinatown.
“What? Oh, no, no, I was just resting my
eyes. You going to the dress fitting? You want me to meet you there?”
“Well, I’ve got
one of Vin-,” Carah stopped herself from speaking her fiancé’s name, knowing
the detestment between him and Toni was on the same level and that stating Toni
as one of Vincenzo’s new “dogs” would cause the detestment to strengthen,” I’ve
got one of Sal’s members to drive me there and he says he can pick you up on
the way,”
“Oh, great. I’ll see you out front,”
“Alright, babes,
see you then. Love ya,” and hung up.
Toni and Carah sat
in silence as he steered the car through Chinatown
and into the Red Light District. Why was Carah avoiding eye contact before? Why
did she suddenly feel uncomfortable around him? Was it because of Toni and
Vincenzo’s tenseness around eachother, or because Vincenzo had warned her about
him? Had Salvatore told her to take a step back, or her father? Did she simply
not like him at all and want to keep him at arms length?
“Hey, if you carry
on in a daze, you’re gonna miss my apartment,” Carah interrupted softly,
breaking Toni’s train of thought.
“Sorry,” Toni
mumbled and pulled up by Carah’s apartment.
“You might have to
beep, she never notices,” Carah advised.
Toni beeped the
horn twice and a few seconds later, a young girl walked out.
She was tall and
slender, like Carah, but her hair was raven-black the fell down past her
shoulders and back like a midnight-black waterfall, her chocolate-brown eyes
deep and hard, her face sharp and high-cheeked, her skin a darker shade to
Carah mocha skin tone, almost russet-coloured.
“Hey, Roxxie!”
Carah greeted and shifted up a seat as Roxanne climbed in the back.
“Hey Cat,” her
sister acknowledged back, less happily and nodded at Toni,” Roxanne Jacaruso,
but if you get on my good side, Roxxie,”
Toni nodded back,”
Antonio Cipriani, but you can just call me Toni,”
“Ah, so you’re the
dog Sal’s been ranting about. The laying-low man,” Roxanne raised her eyebrow,
almost impressed, and grinned at her awareness of Toni’s past.
“So, where’s this
bridal boutique?” Toni asked, hoping to change the conversation.
“Chinatown,
next to Mr. Benz,” Carah responded, looking out of the window to avoid eye
contact again.
Toni said nothing
and drove back into the road and up the hill into the Red Light District, but
his mind when back to his previous train of thought. If Carah didn’t like him,
surely she wouldn’t want to catch a ride with him, let alone escort her to a
bridal boutique. And, surely if Carah didn’t like him, he shouldn’t feel that
slight discontentment at the pit of his stomach?
He passed through
the lane out in Chinatown and stopped at the lights by the main road of Chinatown.
“I’ll be back to
pick you up in half-an-hour,” Toni stated, almost sourly, and opened the car
door for the sisters.
Carah frowned as
she hopped out,” No, I need you come in with me,”
“Come again?” Toni
replied angrily, as Roxanne stepped out.
“I need a guy’s
opinion,” she challenged back and grabbed his hand, her brown eyes pleading,”
Please Toni, I need all the opinions I can get,”
“Fine,” Toni
huffed, snatching his hand back,” I’m gonna park the car and I’ll meet you
inside,”
“Thanks,” Carah
smiled gratefully at him and scuttled after her sister.
Toni got back in
the car and, after the lights turning green, forwarded the car and turned right
into the car park beside the old school hall that resided next to Callahan Bridge. He parked the car in an open gap
and walked out of the car park. He diagonally crossed the Chinatown
main road and entered Alexandra Chung’s Bridal Boutique.
“You ready yet?”
Roxanne called to the closed curtain as she saw Toni step in the boutique.
“Nearly!” Carah
shouted back, followed but the usual rustle of material and tap of high heels.
“So, Vincenzo
tells me his mistook you for ‘Rozelle’” Toni grinned at this, noticing
Roxanne’s grimace and the fact that ‘Rozelle’ didn’t suit her at all.
“The first time I
met Vinnie was at a party, so the bass line thumped so hard that he thought I
said my name was ‘Rozelle’, and it just kinda stuck,” Roxanne shrugged and
stared back at the closed curtain, waiting for her older sister to reappear.
“When-,” Toni
started as he sat down on the white couch, but Roxanne whipped round to face
him, arms crossed over her chest, her face sharp with aggravation.
“Listen, you can
cut the small talk,” she strode over to him, leaning her weight on her arms
stretched on the arms of the couch, bend forwards towards him,” I know you
killed Loderigo Gelsi,” she raised her eyebrows and gazed him deadly in the
eye.
“Sal told you?”
Roxanne shook her
head,” None, Pa did,”
“Does Carah know?”
Roxanne snorted
and took her arms of the couch and walked back towards the closed curtain, her
back still represented to him,” Does Carah know? Of course she does, she was
there when you shot a bullet through his head,”
Carah was there when I killed a made man?
“OK, I’m ready!”
Carah announced, drawing back the curtain and stepping out, causing Roxanne to
smile brightly and Toni to stand up, his mouth nearly agape.
Carah’s white
satin and lace sheath wedding dress, decorated with clear glass beads and
glittery silver sequins on the top half and small rows of diamonds on the neckline,
clung to ever curve of her body and trailed down her legs with a semi-cathedral
train that swirled around her feet. It was plain and simple, but sexy and
elegant at the same time.
“So?” she asked,
lifting her arms up in a questioning manner,” What to you think?”
“I love it. You
look beautiful!” Roxanne pronounced, unshed tears prickling the corner of her
eyes.
Carah smiled and
turned to Toni,” Antonio? What do you think?” she asked, swishing the train
around her long legs.
Toni shook his
head, unable to say anything, and shrugged his shoulders.
“Good speechless
or bad speechless?” Carah asked.
“Good,” Toni
replied softly, nodding.
Carah chuckled at
him and turned back to Roxanne,” I think this is the one. Do you think
Vinnie’ll like it?”
Roxanne nodded
vigorously and took both her sister’s hands,” Vinnie’ll love it, so will Pa and
Divitie and Hell and Magic. Ma would be so proud of you,” Roxanne said brokenly
and burst into tears.
Roxanne’s sudden
outburst caused tears to overflow from her own eyes and she wrapped her arms
around her little sister, as Toni gave them a moment’s peace.
How could he have said anything as he
stared at the most beautiful thing he had ever seen in his life?
“Thanks for
dropping me back off,” Carah said as she climbed out Toni’s car after he had
dropped Roxanne off back at their apartment and dropped her off at Vincenzo’s
warehouse.
Toni shrugged and
closed the car door behind her.
“And thanks for
viewing my wedding dress,” she added, looking at him properly since hours
before.
Toni shrugged
again,” I’m glad I helped,”
Carah nodded and
stepped closer to him, closing the few inches between them, her face almost
level with his. For a moment, Toni thought she was going to lean in a little,
but instead she flicked a wisp of highlighted hair from her eyes and grabbed
her handbag.
“Listen, Sal said
he’s gonna give me a few jobs soon, so maybe I’ll call you, you know, in case I
need back-up,” she broke the silence and looked back up at Toni for his answer.
“Sure,” Toni
nodded.
Carah nodded back
and turned to walk back into Vincenzo’s warehouse, but turned as she got to the
crossing,” Hey!”
Toni turned back
around as he approached the car door.
“How would you
feel if I invited you to the wedding?” she asked, her eyes narrowing slightly
with suspicion.
Toni shrugged
again and leaned against the car.
“OK then. Bye,”
She lifted her hand in farewell and walked across the crossing and disappeared
into the warehouse.
Toni watched her
vanish into the warehouse. He knew how he felt if he got invited to the “boss”
and “princess’” wedding, the feeling of discontentment in the pit of his
stomach would grow, aching his whole body as he watched them on the happiest
day of their lives.
