We met at Seela's little getaway repeatedly over the course of several weeks. Things got… interesting. But throughout the whole time, she never tried to make me switch sides. We both knew what was at stake with our secret meetings, and it would only complicate things for both of us if either of us switched sides. Still, I wanted to have her closer… traveling so much for such fleeting moments was so frustrating. Alari's holo communicator alerted her to a call, which she answered immediately. Satele Shan was on the other end of the call. "Master Satele." "Alari," she glanced to her right uneasily, making Alari wince, "We heard some disturbing accusations about you that we're going to have to investigate." "I see. How credible are these accusations?" "Credible enough to warrant investigation." Alari smirked in annoyance at the pert response, and Satele added, "Look, I'm only telling you because I know you have the republic's best interests in mind. I believe you would have benefitted from a longer term as a padawan, but I don't believe you would have done anything to deserve a criminal investigation." Alari lowered her head for a moment, then raised it to meet the image's eyes before replying, "Thank you, Satele. I appreciate the vote of confidence." When the call ended, Alari sighed heavily, taking a seat and putting her head in both hands. She and Satele had been at odds more than a few times. If Satele was actually concerned, something must really be wrong. "We were so careful… no, it can't be. It must be something else." She raised her head and made a call. Her sister's image flickered to life on the communicator. "Something wrong, Alari?" "I don't know yet…" ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A hearing with the council was rarely a good thing, but at least I knew what was coming. Regardless of the accusations at hand, they would be digging up all of my old records, scouring them for the slightest wrongdoing. I don't believe that how I handled my missions was wrong in any way, but the council wouldn't see it that way. My methods have long been deemed reckless and heavy handed, and whatever they haven't told me - whatever reason they have for calling me in - is going to be the nail in the coffin. Alari entered the council chambers, finding all ten members waiting for her. They were seated at a large table. She approached, standing in front of them. "I don't suppose," Alari began, trying to mask her irritation, "That I can convince you to tell me why I'm here before you go through the trouble of reciting everything I've done to get a red mark since joining the academy as a child?" "Why?" Syo asked, cocking his head to the side and furrowing his brow, "Do you have something more important to be doing?" "I would argue that anything is more important than being in a meeting room. Some of us have actually been off of Tython." "Enough!" Satele shouted, "This is exactly the sort of attitude that places you under suspicion in the first place!" "The fact that I would rather help people than talk to the lot of you just makes me a cesspool of a human being, doesn't it?" "This exchange only keeps you here longer," Jaric replied calmly, "If you believe it's a waste of time, and you want it to be done more quickly, let it run its course as smoothly as possible, and you'll be on your way." "Very well," Alari sighed, "Please, carry on." "There is no question that what you've done for the republic has been a boon. However, your often unsavory methods, and past records, lead us to believe that the current accusations being levied against you have some truth to them. To put it bluntly, you don't leave survivors. The jedi don't believe in killing their foes if it's at all possible to take them alive. You, on the other hand, have shown a willingness to kill whoever stands in your way, and indeed, even people who run away. As a padawan, in order to rescue a group of civilian refugees that were being sold into slavery, you butchered nearly fifty people. You killed about two people for every one person you saved, which leads me to believe that you only rescued them as an afterthought." "As I stated in my report, these slavers were only interested in sex slaves. That means that anyone they captured who didn't fit their description of an attractive woman would be killed. By ending that threat, more lives have undoubtably been saved. It was an exchange that resulted in a better galaxy. I stand by that belief and feel no further need to defend it." "I see. And how do you defend the torture and murder of a defeated sith by your hands? When the imperial ship that you had been sent in to intercept on Tython abandoned him, despite the fact that he had already been defeated, you dismembered him to gain information, then killed him anyway. This is completely indefensible. The jedi do not torture prisoners, and we certainly don't do so for sport. When confronted about it, you threatened your own comrade." He hesitated for a moment before adding, "If you have an explanation, this would be a good time to start talking." "That entire scenario was setup to mentally torture me. As pompous as it sounds, they weren't after the woman they took prisoner. No, they only took her because she was one of the ones I'd rescued, and they wanted to punish me for throwing a wrench in their plans. Whatever else the sith may be, they aren't foolish. It was well planned, and it worked. I was absolutely crushed when I couldn't save her…" Alari's voice cracked slightly, and she took a deep breath before continuing. "They had hoped that such pain would turn me to the dark side, but they failed. How close it came to working, I cannot say, but I can most certainly attest that my actions were not the result of a rational mind." "There is no justification for what you did." Satele interjected. "Then why wait until now to bring it up?" Alari demanded. "I've had just about enough of this nonsense. You will tell me why I'm really here, right now, or I will leave." "You will do no such thing!" "Walking out on this hearing," Jaric interrupted, still calmly, "Will only make you look guilty." "Tell that to the innocent people who would be dead without me." Alari replied, glaring at him. Jaric hesitated, maintaining eye contact while he assessed her resolve. With a sigh, he shuffled some papers around, finding a particular folder and opening it. "Well, I suppose you have your mind made up. Let's get to the point, then. We have reason to believe that you have been having regular, secret meetings with the sith." Alari went cold. Her eyes widened, and her mouth opened a little, as if to speak, but no words came to her. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rebecca and Aric walked up the spiral ramp toward the council meeting room. They were both in heavy armor, large guns strapped to their backs. "You know this is crazy, don't you commander?" Aric asked, his voice betraying amusement with the whole situation. "Oh yeah," Rebecca replied with an open mouthed smile, "That's why I brought you instead of Dorne." "Hah!" When they got to the door, the two jedi standing guard outside stopped them. "Havoc squad," Rebecca said, "Comin' through." "We can't let you in," one of the jedi replied. Rebecca responded by punching him in the stomach, making him double over and fall to the floor. The second man reached for his lightsaber, but he was too slow. She kicked him in the chest, knocking him into the doors and pushing those doors open, making him fall inside the doorway. Council members stood up as the two entered. They walked straight over to Alari and flanked her, much to her confusion. "You can't just barge in here!" Satele snapped. "Apparently, I can." Rebecca replied. "Just like you all can haul a hero of the republic in here with no probable cause." "She's been accused of secret meetings with the sith! That's a serious offense!" "That is a serious offense. Do you have any proof, or is it just an accusation?" "Based on her character-" Rebecca grabbed Satele by the front of her robes and pulled her across the table, bringing her close enough for them to be face to face. "Based on her character, she's a hero. Have you ever freed slaves? I have. I've had to carry battered, malnourished bodies out of enemy lines. And that's what Alari has dedicated her life to. Maybe if you got off your ass and actually helped once in a while, you wouldn't be so detached from reality." The commander released Satele's robes, expecting the woman to fall on her face. However, the jedi landed on her hands and pushed herself up, kicking Rebbeca in the chest as she did, and drawing her lightsaber. Rebecca stumbled back a few feet, but Alari moved to stand between them. "As you said, Satele," Alari said slowly, biting her words, "You have no real proof. I'll be leaving now. It's nothing short of embarrassing that the republic military has to rescue someone from the jedi council." The three of them turned to leave, and Satele shouted after them. "This isn't over, Alari! I will have my proof!" ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The sisters sat in the private quarters of Alari's ship. Alari's head was in her hands. She was hunched over, stressed to near-breaking point. Rebecca removed one of her armored gauntlets and placed her bare hand on Alari's shoulder. "You look like hell, sis. What happened in there before I showed up?" "They dredged up old cases. It's not important, I just… I don't know how they came up with this accusation." "It sounds like they're looking for an excuse to get rid of you now that your job is done." "No, that's not it." Alari hesitated. She took a deep breath and looked up at her sister. "It's true. I've been meeting a darth." Rebecca's eyes flared open in anger, and she stood up, grabbing the front of Alari's robes with her bare hand. She lifted the younger woman easily, slamming Alari's back against the nearest wall and pinning her there. "What the hell is wrong with you, Alari?" she demanded, "Of all the stupid… Look at yourself! You don't have to go sneak off with a sith!" "When Seela-" "Stop changing the subject! Maybe this sith reminds you of Seela, and I know how much you cared about her, but you have to let it go!" "Will you shut up and listen to me? Darth Nox doesn't remind me of Seela… Darth Nox is Seela." Alari began sobbing, and Rebecca's face softened. She set her younger sister down on her feet and sat back down heavily. Alari slid down the wall and into a fetal position, hugging her knees and crying. The commander shook her head and sighed, looking at the jedi. "What am I gonna do with you, Alari? They're eventually going to find proof if you keep seeing her. If you stop now, and I mean right now, you can still get out of this, but if you keep seeing her, I can't protect you." "I know," Alari whispered, "I know. Just tell me what to do, sis. Please, tell me what to do." Rebecca got up and sat on the floor next to her sister. She wrapped her arm around the younger woman's shoulders and pulled her close, letting Alari rest her head on the cold steel of her armor. "Stop seeing her. You're under active investigation, Alari. Any attempt to see her now, and they'll make sure you can never see her, or anyone else, ever again. Alright?" Alari nodded, and Rebecca ruffled her hair. Alari giggled, and she suddenly stopped, furrowing her brow. "Wait… Nox? Isn't she the one who kicked your ass at the Delta-65 outpost?" "Yeah." "Sheesh. When you force users have a lover's quarrel, you really pull out all the stops." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The council didn't ground my ship during the investigation, but I'd be willing to bet my right arm that they'd put at least a tracking beacon on it at some point. I didn't know what to do. Occasionally, when I thought I could get away with it, I'd go far out into the undeveloped plains and abandoned areas of Tython, and contact Seela by holo communicator. It was nice to hear her voice, but she told me the same thing Rebecca did - that I needed to stay away, at least for now. But one day, coming back from my long walk, I was rudely greeted. Satele, flanked by two jedi knights, walked quickly toward Alari. She had a scowl of determination on her face. The two women stopped a few feet from each other, and Satele spoke first. "What are you doing all the way out here by yourself, Alari?" "I don't get enough privacy in my ship." "What is that supposed to mean?" With a sly smirk, Alari replied, "Well, I tend to be a screamer, even by myself." Satele crossed her arms and turned away, her face reddening. The knights flanking her glanced around uneasily, but Satele didn't let the awkward silence continue for long. "Cute, but you're not winning any points with the council." Alari didn't respond immediately, instead walking confidently toward Satele. The knights readied their lightsabers, but Alari made no movement to attack. She stopped just in front of Satele, leaning over to speak softly right next to the woman's ear, "I can win points with you any time you want. Just come meet me by yourself." Not looking at Satele's blush, Alari began to walk away. When she got about ten feet from the group, she heard Satele's lightsaber come to life. She drew her own weapon and looked back, just in time to see the council member bearing down on her. Satele leapt into the air, and was coming down hard. Alari blocked Satele's lightsaber with the blade of her own, then slid hers along its length, catching Satele in the temple with the butt of her hilt. Satele crumpled to the ground, unconscious, and Alari went to one knee to check her vital signs. It had all happened too fast for the knights to respond properly, but they were ready now. Alari glared up at them, lightsaber still at the ready. "This can go one of two ways," she began, "Either you take her to get medical treatment, and I let you go, or you attack me, and all three of you wind up in the hospital." After waiting a few seconds for a reply that never came, Alari stood back up and sheathed her lightsaber. The knights let me leave in peace, but Satele had created a problem. Even if this fight was to be the end of our physical confrontation, I believed I would be put on closer watch from then on. I don't think of myself as particularly clever for having realized this - it's the most obvious course of action, and the same one I would undoubtedly take in her position. Worse, she surely knew that I took this walk often. If I suddenly stopped, it would be incredibly suspicious. She wanted to confront me when I couldn't deny it. She was too late this time, but she wouldn't make the same mistake again. There was only one thing to do… and it was hard to believe that I was even considering it. The following day, Alari walked the same path again. She was more nervous this time, and kept glancing around. He had a rosy shade to her cheeks, which got worse as she got closer to her destination. It was an abandoned building on the top of a steep hill, once used as an outpost for a long forgotten mine. She took another quick look around after walking in, peering out the windows, which had been stripped of glass or shudders, and were now little more than holes in the wall. She hadn't expected to see anyone, but that confirmed it. Taking a deep breath, she propped herself up on the desk and hiked her robe up, quickly removing her panties. Her hand went between her legs, which closed around it while she glanced back and forth, her face burning with embarrassment. Satele had taken another route up the hill - climbing a sheer cliff face on the other side to avoid being detected. As she climbed up over the edge, her visible presence faded away, the force cloaking her for her approach. She peeked in through one of the windows, catching Alari just as the sage was removing her panties, and quickly turned away. She sat next to the building, leaning against the wall, and put her head in her hand. Satele couldn't believe that Alari had been telling the truth - coming all the way out here just to masturbate. A sharp moan came from inside, and Satele felt the warmth of a blush creeping to her cheeks. Even worse, her nipples hardened. She bit her lip, and with her libido getting the better of her, repositioned herself into a crouch to look into the window again. Alari had her legs open now, her feet propped up on the desk. She was slowly rubbing her clit in a circular motion with one finger. Her free hand was gripping the edge of the table tightly. She laid on her back, and began slowly rolling her hips. Satele squirmed uncomfortably as she watched, and though she was embarrassed to do so, hiked up her own robe. As her fingers slid under her panties, they met wetness. She held onto the window sill with her free hand, rubbing her own clit back and forth with two fingers. Alari gradually sped up, her moans becoming louder. Her breathing was more shallow now, her head lulling back. Satele sped up with her, and was finding it more difficult to keep herself from making noise. Alari shuddered, releasing her grip on the desk to claw at it, and arched her back. She screamed, her inner walls contracting in waves, and bucked her hips. The sight was too much for Satele, who was thrown over the edge of climax, and had to bite her own wrist in order to avoid screaming. As Alari laid panting, the other jedi readjusted her robe and snuck off before she could be detected. Alari smiled, chuckling weakly to herself. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Master Satele," Jaric said with a warm smile, "What did you find out?" Satele crossed her arms and turned away in embarrassment. After a brief pause, she cleared her throat and replied. "It was… exactly as she said." There was a bit of chuckling at the table, and Jaric simply shook his head. "Grow up, will you? I know this isn't what we wanted to see, but at least we know that our suspicions were unfounded." "Only…" "What is it? Do you know something?" "Well, what if this time was just a ruse? She knew I was onto her, and she knew I would follow her again." Her holo communicator alerted her, and she answered it with a huff. "This had better be important." "I'm sorry, Master Satele," a republic soldier said on the other side of the line, "But the man you had us put a watch on, the informant? He's just been found dead in his apartment. He has no markings to indicate a weapon was used. We're going to send him to get autopsied right away." Satele sighed and put away her holo communicator. "Now who do you suppose would have a reason to murder the man who provided information on Alari?"
