Kyli eyed Billz uneasily as he studied the living room of her home. She could almost see the greed forming in his eyes as he looked over the treasures she and Quill had collected over the years. Folding her arms across her chest, he looked toward her, attracted by the sudden movement. There was a flicker in his eyes, something she couldn’t quite place. “Here’s your water.” Altius said as he walked out of the kitchen, a small glass in hand. He offered it to Billz, who took it gratefully, unlatching his mask with his other hand. “Thanks kid.” He said gruffly, taking a small sip. It was merely a courtesy. He leaned back in the chair he was resting in, folding his left leg over his right. “So you wanted to know about Serenity?” “Sort of.” Altius said, taking a seat next to the dining table. “I want to know more about Tylron, though.” Billz closed his eyes, taking another sip of the water. “Before I do, kid, you need to know something.” He paused a moment to make sure he had the boy’s attention, and his mother’s. He knew the parent type, and even though he wasn’t looking at her, he knew she was hanging on to every word. “The last person I told what I knew about Tylron was Serenity. And she disappeared.” Altius grimaced, looking off to the side for a moment. The resolve in his eyes came back quickly, though, as he faced Billz once again. “What did you tell her?” Billz sighed. “You sure you know what you’re getting into?” “My father came into contact with Tylron, and he vanished along with him.” Altius said. Despite saying it without a break, Billz could see the strain in his face. “I need to know anything I can about him.” Billz nodded. “Sorry to say, kid, I don’t know much. I guess what I said set her on the right track, but I don’t know how much good it’ll do for you.” He shrugged, taking another sip. “All I told her were the rumors going around Stormwind. And there aren’t many. Tylron doesn’t like a lot of attention. What I know is that when he appears, it’s usually to confront someone who’s alone, and whatever he does to them messes with their mind. They end up freaking out, getting some sort of amnesia or something.” A light gasp made him pause, turning in his seat. Kyli had made the noise, her hand being over her mouth When she didn’t react to his questioning look, he turned back around, facing Altius again. Taking another sip, he realized he was letting the water slip out of his mouth before actually drinking any of it. “Anyways, that’s all anyone really knows. No one seems to find him, as he can appear and disappear at will, it seems. You don’t see him, he sees you.” He said, smiling grimly at the common saying about the shady man. Altius nodded slowly, threading his fingers together. That information was next to useless to him, he was no closer to finding him than when he started. He stood still for several minutes before he looked up, spotting Billz to be standing with his mask back on. “I’ll just be going, then.” Billz said as he walked towards the door. “Sorry I couldn’t be any more help.” Altius shook his head. “Any information is better than nothing. Thanks for sharing it with me.” “No problem kid. Just…” Billz said, catching himself midsentence. Altius tilted his head as the man stood in his doorway, struggling with himself. “If you… find Tylron, and you… happen to see Serenity… tell… tell her I said hi, ya?” Altius smiled slowly, nodding. “Will do.” Content, Billz stepped out of the small house, closing the door behind him. A soft, magical explosion spread through the cracks of the door, only reaching out a foot past it before fading. As soon as it was gone, there was the distinct sound of powerful wings beating down the air. Kyli looked curiously at Altius for an answer, but he just shrugged. Standing up from the chair, he began pacing around the room. Kyli watched him from her seat, folding her arms together under her chest. It was strange, seeing her son so focused on something. “That information wasn’t the clearest we could have gotten, was it?” Kyli said quietly. Altius shrugged, only briefly halting his pacing. “It’s a start. Serenity… she was a fighter, right?” “Mhm.” Kyli said, raising a finger to her chin. “She was a mage, I watched her practice in the training grounds.” Altius nodded several times, standing still. “So, a mage… she probably was attuned to magical energy… and I’m sure someone as powerful as Tylron emits a lot of it… so she might have been able to track him that way.” “Yes… that’s possible.” Kyli said, amazed at how easily he put that together. “So… I can’t do that. So I need to find another way…” Altius glanced at the ground where the magical residue had been the night before. He thought he had heard Arthur saying something about it being powerful demonic energy, but there was always the chance that they might keep some of it. “I need to go talk to Arthur.” Kyli nodded slowly. “He might be able to help… or are you going for training?” Altius looked at the ceiling. “Training wouldn’t be a bad idea…” “…teachings of the Light tell us that-” “Arthur!” The paladin paused, looking past the rows of new trainees to see Altius standing behind him. He let his hand fall out of the enthusiastic hand gesture that accompanied his lecture as he nodded at the boy. “I’ll be a moment, continue meditating and attempting to secure the Light within yourselves.” The rows of young boys and girls in front of him nodded, only a few whispers reaching Altius before they all fell silent in prayer. He nodded in approval, somehow feeling beyond the level of student. Arthur walked around his class to where Altius stood, raising an eyebrow. “I understand that you would want to be excused from class for a while, but interrupting my lesson is a little much, don’t you think?” Altius bounced on one foot until his balance wavered, switching to the other. “I know, I’m sorry, but I needed your help.” Arthur folded his arms behind his back, jerking his head to his left. “Let’s take this outside, shall we?” Altius and Arthur walked in silence for a short while until they found themselves just behind the Cathedral, a surprisingly quiet place that few people visit. As with the rest of the city, it was kept well cleaned, and was often a place Arthur himself would come to pray in solitude. He turned to his pupil, holding his hands out. “Well? What did you need?” Altius took a deep breath, standing still as he explained himself. “I need to know what you did with all of the residue in my house after my father got taken.” Arthur raised an eyebrow, shifting his weight to one side. “Altius, I’m sure that even you could feel the demonic tint resonating from that dust. We disposed of it, after cleansing it, of course. Why did you want it?” “I thought I could use it to track the man who took my father.” “Oh…” Arthur’s eyes widened, his mouth opening slightly. “…oh. Altius…” He sighed, hesitant to tell the boy more. “Chasing after such a person… or thing is a bad idea. Just the remains from an obvious spell of his was immensely powerful. You could be killed if you encounter him.” Altius sighed. “I know. Which leads me to the second favor I need to ask.” “Second?” Arthur asked, curious. “I need extensive training. At the very least teaching me how to use my sword properly, I need to be able to fight him.” Arthur closed his eyes, shaking his head. “I can’t do that, I can’t willingly send you into a demon’s clutches.” “You’re not sending me anywhere.” Altius said firmly. Arthur glanced at him, puzzled. Altius opened his mouth for a moment, and closed it. He looked down regretfully at speaking so rashly to his teacher. “I’m going no matter what. I had hoped to be better prepared for what I’ll find, is all.” The silence that followed only fed his doubt. Despite his resolve, it still felt wrong of him to defy his teacher. But he knew he wouldn’t stand a chance against Tylron without Arthur’s help. After several minutes, Arthur sighed. “You’re really going, aren’t you?” Without waiting for an answer, he walked toward the stained glass window that dominated the majority of the cathedral’s back wall. It was an ideal of the Light, though its meager brilliance did little to show the faith that was shown to the light within the cathedral walls. Like always, its colors and patterns seemed to merge and blend together, giving Arthur the clarity of mind he needed. “Alright.” Altius perked up, nearly given up on any chance of help from his teacher. He was about to respond when Arthur held up a hand. “But only if you promise me something.” Altius nodded. He knew it was coming, but he had no qualms about it. “You must come back.” “Come back?” Altius asked. “Alive, yes. Not as much for me, but for your mother.” Altius nodded. “When can we get started?” Arthur laughed. “You know, I might just kidnap someone myself if it gets my pupils this enthusiastic about their training.” Once again, the satisfying sound of metal biting wood met his ears. Altius grinned, flicking his wrists to jerk the sword away, taking a step back to ready himself. “Good. You’re catching on quickly.” Arthur said. The training dummy regenerated in moments, leaving it fresh. Altius swung again, this time as a high overhead arc, sending his sword crashing into the dummy’s skull, splitting it down the middle. He jerked it out again, bringing the sword back to a ready position. Holding it for a moment, Altius let it fall, its tip touching the ground. “This was easier than I made it out to be.” The boy said, waving the sword around like it was a butter knife. Arthur nodded, secretly surprised at how quickly Altius had adjusted to the sword’s weight and balance. But there was much more to teach. “You say as you attack a defenseless dummy.” Arthur commented, waving his hand at the enchanted figurine. Its head was sealing itself, but after hours of being attacks, it wasn’t a very fast process. “You’re doing well, admittedly, but you should practice against an actual opponent before calling it easy.” Altius nodded, a little embarrassed. He turned toward Arthur, looking around the training grounds. There were two other people training, though he didn’t think either of them could help him. One of them was practicing small fireballs on the weakest of dummies, while the other was ruthlessly attacking the strongest with scourge magic. Both of them were too far away from his skill level to be of any help. Altius turned to Arthur, who was already unsheathing his mace. “Well, don’t just stand there. Let’s get started.” Altius held up his sword, its weight feeling somehow magnified in the face of his teacher. Waving the large mace around with ease, Arthur took a ready pose, the two looking for any opening in the other’s guard. Arthur pushed off the ground, lunging at Altius and bringing the mace crashing down from the left. Stepping back to avoid the weapon’s large swing, Altius swung his own in an uppercut, only to be blocked by the mace. He jumped back again, marveling at Arthur’s speed. Arthur dashed again, but Altius brought his hand out, jabbing the hilt of his sword against Arthur’s upper chest, sending him back thanks to his own momentum. Arthur staggered a bit, bringing one hand to his chest. Altius moved in, trying to swing his sword down on his shoulder, but he failed to noticed Arthur’s mace moving. With a one handed swing, Arthur crashed his weapon into Altius’s side, sending him flying off to the side. Altius slammed onto the ground, raising a cloud of dust where he hit. Even without both hands to back up the mace, Altius could still feel a few of his ribs that had cracked with the ferocious blow. Using his sword to prop himself up, he channeled holy magic in his palm, letting it flow freely through his body. Though he felt his limited mana drain, his wounds vanished along with any fatigue. Some instinct told him to raise his sword, and it met Arthur’s hammer in an overhead smash. The sword went flying out of his grip, but it deflected the ending blow from Arthur. The head of his mace dug deeply into the ground, and Altius dashed after his sword while he worked to edge it out. His sword hadn’t been thrown very far, and Altius grabbed the hilt while spinning to face his teacher. Draining the rest of his mana, he sent a surge of light at Arthur, striking him directly in the chest. The blow only seemed to anger him as he wrenched his mace out of the ground, charging at Altius. Altius sidestepped another crushing swing from the mace, amazed at how different Arthur seemed. He had never acted like this, even in previous sparring matches. Altius raised his sword to deflect a sideways swing, deflecting the hammer into the ground. Flicking his wrist, his sword jerked up to Arthur’s neck, holding against him. Arthur sucked in air as he tugged his hammer out of the ground once more. Catching Altius by surprise, he spun around in a whirlwind of light, sending Altius flying backwards. He crashed into the wall of the training area, his sword sticking into the ground not far away. Crying out in pain, Altius found that he couldn’t move without feeling like his body was breaking apart. He tried to raise his hands, using the mana that he had regained over the course of fighting to heal himself. He fought through the pain as holy magic surged through him, only partially healing his wounds. He sat against the wall limply as Arthur walked over, already sheathing his hammer on his back. “That’s a lesson you can only learn in combat.” Arthur said, channeling magic through his hands and into Altius, completely healing him. Offering him a hand, he helped the boy to his feet. “Never assume the fight is over until you know it is. Many noble men have died because the assumed their opponent defeated.” Altius nodded, shrugging his shoulders. The memory of that pain wouldn’t leave him for some time. Grabbing the handle of the sword, he slid it out of the ground, sheathing it against his back. “But, I must say, you have improved tremendously since we last had a bout.” Arthur said, patting the boy on the shoulder. “I don’t even recall teaching you to deflect attacks instead of simply blocking them.” Altius shrugged, enthused by the praise. “I figured my sword would snap in two if I just tried to block a hammer swing.” “Perhaps not with one, but yes, your sword wouldn’t handle it well.” Arthur said. “You’re near to even my level of combat prowess, an amazing feat for someone so young.” Arthur said, stretching his arm. “Now all you need is practice against a magic user, something I cannot help you with, unfortunately.” “Perhaps I can.”
