Sleep came easily enough. The alcohol you'd consumed had mostly worn off, leaving you very drowsy. Sometime shortly before dawn, however, you were awoken again.
... Hey! Pig Farts!
Leaning up on one elbow you frown, blinking uncertainly. You shoot a glance over at the slightly opened window. Had you really just heard...? "Dad?"
Yeah, Pig Farts! It's me! Dad! Come on out here! We gotta get outta here, NOW! It's a trick! Vergil is going to kill you!
Fully awake now, you rush towards the window and peek out. There, standing on the sidewalk across the street, was your father. He was frantically gesturing that you should join him outside and his face was anxious and tight with worry. You widen your eyes and feel your heart begin to pick up speed. When he saw you weren't moving, you could swear that a furiously impatient expression replaced the fear on his face for a moment, before it quickly disappeared. Again, he cupped his hands around his mouth and called out to you again, only...
It didn't really look like he was moving his mouth at all. You squint, just to make sure, when his next shout slams into your mind.
COME OUT, NOW!
"Sssst!" You hiss air over your teeth, clutching your forehead as a stabbing pain shot through your skull.
With the demand came an strange, almost irresistible urge to run outside and feel the cold night air on your skin. With that also came the certainty that you should look upon your father's face again.
Come out, lovely. Daddy will protect you. Come out here with me. The voice crooned.
Slowly you turn back to gaze back out at the figure on the street, only this time his features were welcoming and warm. His eyes were wide and compelling, and you found yourself getting lost in them. The face you remembered from your childhood smiled kindly at you. His beloved, scruffy, grizzled face that made you feel so warm and protected and safe.
"Ok, daddy. I'm coming," you murmur, feeling a smile of your own spread across your lips. Slowly, feeling as if you were underwater, you begin to grab random items of clothing from one of your suitcases.
No time for that, lovely. I will buy you dozens of dresses when we escape. All that matters is that you get out of that house now. Right now. Hurry. Before he wakes up.
Of course. Vergil. Your breath catches and your heart beats harder with fright. He was the devil who was keeping you prisoner here! Of course your clothes didn't matter! You had to flee! Now! There wasn't much time left!
"Oh God," you whisper, horrified.
Yes, precious. Time is running out. Hurry. Out the front door.
Your father's voice encouraged you as you tiptoed down the hallway and peered around the corner. Vergil, you saw, was seemingly asleep in his favorite chair, a book upside down on the floor next to him. Oh, no. Your mouth drops open in dismay. How would you ever be able to sneak past-
His senses aren't at their sharpest while he slumbers. Still though, you must be ever so careful.
You nod in agreement and proceed to glide across the tiled entryway. Your bare feet didn't make the slightest of sounds. The front door, however, was another matter.
… creeeeeeeeeeek ...
Instantly, Vergil's eyes flew open. In a streak of blue, he was up and had crossed the short distance between himself and the door. Just as your foot was about to cross the threshold, the being that was mimicking your father sprinted across the street with inhuman speed. No longer was it the man you so adored. No. Now it was a ruined horror of saliva, gibbering eagerness, gnashing teeth and razor claws and...
...it was suddenly right in front of you. Its foul stench overwhelmed the air surrounding you.
All this, in the time it took you to raise your foot and take a half step forward. You didn't even have time to gag, nor to throw your arms up in front of your face in a desperate attempt at self-defense. The thing snatched your ankle and bit into it, beginning to pull you out into the night. For a moment, you could neither feel nor do anything, then enormous pain took hold of your leg and quickly spread until the agony was all your brain could comprehend. It ground its teeth into your flesh with increasing pressure until it suddenly stopped and faded away.
You open your eyes and watch the thing melt away into dust. Somehow, you were now lying on the cold tiles in front of the open door. Dimly, you saw a flash of steel and heard the cold, sliding sound of metal against metal.
Oh, it hurt.
Vaguely, you realize someone was screaming. Annoyed, you turn your head to tell whomever it was to please stop before the darkness consumed you.
You come to in an unfamiliar room. There were voices on the other side of the door.
"Vergil, what happened? How did a changeling almost get her?" It was a woman's voice.
"I intend to ask her as soon as she wakes up, trust me." He sounded a tad angry.
You frown and glance around. This was not your bedroom. What was going on?
You shift and throw the covers back, meaning to swing your legs over the side of the bed. Suddenly, the door bursts open and Vergil strides in, straight towards you. How had he known-
He interrupts your thought and grasps your upper arms, lifting you to his eye-level as if you weighed nothing. At the same time you issue a startled squeal, he begins to pummel you with a barrage of questions.
"What were you thinking? Are you simple? What do you mean trying to sneak out without my approval? You would just offer yourself to them on a silver platter? Do you want to die? Am I just wasting my time here? If so, please tell me and I'll end you right now and be done with it."
Frantically, you shake you head in denial. "I thought it was my dad out there! He was calling to me and then, I don't k-know, it was like I had to go out there." You try to explain the strange feeling that had overwhelmed you. "It was like... like I was on a string and he was pulling me along, only with his voice."
A strange expression flitted across his features then vanished as quickly as it had appeared. "Go on."
You begin to explain everything that had happened, starting when you first heard the voice calling to you from the street.
Throughout this, Vergil's eyes were burning into yours. As your explanation went on, however, his grip on your arms loosened and his stare became less intense. Finally, he nodded and issued a dismissive huff, carelessly tossing you back onto the bed.
"You heard this voice in your head, I presume."
You nod, "I-I think so. If-if it was out loud, wouldn't it have waken you?"
"Did it capture your gaze with its own?"
Again, you nod. "The last thing I remember was that thing biting me and-" You stop suddenly and glance down at your wounded ankle.
At least, you thought you'd been wounded. Now, there was nothing but smooth, unmarred flesh. Your brows raise in surprise and you glance up at Vergil, confused. He was staring at you, expressionless, then held up a small, greenish globe. It appeared it once had a glowing green liquid in it, you could see traces of it coating the inside.
"Crystallized demon fluid. We just refer to them as 'green orbs' for simplicity's sake. Basically, it's handy to have around for healing purposes. Especially when working alongside humans." His upper lip curled slightly as he said this, and he tossed an annoyed glance towards the door frame.
From the corner of your eye you catch some movement in the doorway. Heart jumping to your throat, you snap a glance over to see Lady walking towards the two of you. She wasn't smiling, but she wasn't exactly frowning either. "So, Vergil. You strengthen the wards on your house and they counter with the allure of a changeling. Makes me curious as to why this little Miss. is so very important to them."
"... Hn."
"W-why are you here?" You ask her.
Lady smirks, "He called me over to clean you up. Something about chivalry and blah, blah, blah. I think he just didn't want to sponge you off himself."
You look down at yourself and realize you had different clothing on than what you had fallen asleep in. Blushing furiously, you snatch the covers around you, as if they'd shield you against the embarrassment. "Why-"
"You were covered in blood, hon. Vergil used the orb, then had me wash you off and change your clothes. Don't worry, he never peeked once. I made sure of it." Lady smiled this time, softening her features into a somewhat friendly expression. "Also, don't worry. I love being called at the ass-crack of dawn to come over to a bad-tempered half-devil's house. It's one of my most favorite things ever." She turned a pointed glare on Vergil
Vergil stood quietly to the side during her rant while you threw him several questioning looks throughout. You couldn't be sure, but you thought you saw a trace of color tinge his pale cheeks when Lady was joking about him 'peeking' at you. He effectively ignored Lady's sharp remarks and seemed quite intrigued by a painting hanging on the far wall.
"... And so, here we are now at this very moment in time." Lady finished, plopping down on the bed next to you. "Threw him off, though." She jerked her chin in Vergil's direction. "Set you up in his room while I stood guard. He combed the whole neighborhood to make sure there was nothing else hanging around."
"This is your bedroom?" You ask him.
He nods in affirmation.
"So, am I going to be punished then?" You go on, feeling rather snarky for some reason. "I mean, you did say that I better not be caught in any forbidden room for any reason or you wouldn't be kind about it. Right?"
Vergil glowers at you and a tiny tingle of fear prickles its way up your spine. Lady, however, appeared delighted. "Good for you! About time someone besides me and Dante gave some back to this sullen jackass." She jerked her thumb towards him.
"Would you like me to punish you? Is that what you're asking?" His tone held a note of subtle menace. Apparently, he was running short on patience.
You wilt a bit. "No. It was just an attempt at some playful banter. You know, to take the edge off of this whole situation." You flash him a wan smile.
"Well! This has been a blast and all but, uh... can I go now?" Lady asks, getting to her feet. She makes a show of straightening her shirt before shooting a pointed glance towards Vergil.
"Yes, Lady. You've my thanks."
"Yeah, yeah. I know. Seriously, though. Next time you're going to bathe her yourself!" Lady blew a lock of hair up off her forehead and stomped out without a goodbye.
Vergil ran a hand back through his hair and gave a slight head shake. Several moments pass. Finally, you begin to fidget uncomfortably, pulling the covers tighter around you. You get a whiff of decidedly male cologne, mixed with a natural musk as you do so. It was a very pleasant smell and you smile, burying your face into the blanket and inhaling deeply.
"What are you doing?" He asks, brow arched.
Feeling your ears grow warm, you realize that you must look rather silly. "Uhm, I guess I was smelling the covers."
"... Why?"
"Smells nice." An awkward smile stretches across your mouth.
Vergil raises both brows, and this time you're certain that his cheeks grow a bit pink.
"Uhm, I guess I'll go back to my, ah, your other room now." You scramble to your feet and shoot him a timid glance before you leave. " And, uh, thanks for saving my life. Again."
No answer, just that searching gaze. You take the hint and leave quickly.
