“The fire must’ve caught their attention. Can you carry me? I don’t think I can walk in this condition.” Braith winced as she attempted to stand.
“I’ll see what I can do.”Aloth wrapped one arm around Braith while she tucked her legs around his waist and clasped her arms about his shoulders. Holding his grimoire in his left hand Aloth peered out of the drake’s chest cavity.
They seem to have found the body. Best leave before they spot us as well. Braith pointed in the direction of the smoldering heap. Small child-sized figures crept out of the shadows and surrounded the charred remains. They grasped at pieces of the body but yelped in pain as the heat burned their hands. There must have been at least ten of them. Hollowborn children with the souls of animals.
They’re barring our way back to camp. We’ll have to find a way around them. Aloth looked to Braith who nodded in agreement. Aloth slipped between the rib bones of the drake, glancing over his shoulder. It seemed the wichts hadn’t discovered them yet. He turned north, intending to circle around and avoid them. A campfire in the distance caught his attention. What was Edér doing with a fire at this time of night? It would be prudent to warn him about the nearby wichts. Aloth trudged through the expanse of dead undergrowth, at last coming to a grove of trees.
This doesn’t seem right. Braith tried to peer through the trees. This isn’t our camp. But perhaps they could spare some medical supplies?
Aloth walked out of the trees and approached the campfire. A man in chainmail armor sat on a log next to the fire, whittling an arrow.
“Excuse me.” Aloth began. “My friend has been injured and requires medical attention. Could you spare any supplies?”
The man turned, brushing the wood shavings off of his trousers. “That right? Yeah I suppose we could fix you right up.” He drew a knife from his belt. “So who’s first, you or the naked bitch?”
Aloth! Bandits! An arrow whizzed past Aloth’s ear. The man was not alone.
The man with the knife lunged forward but suddenly yelled with pain, grabbing his head between his hands.
“Hey, what’s going on!” Three other bandits rushed forward. In response the man in chainmail let out of a howl of rage and hurled himself toward his friends, slashing wildly with the knife.
“What the fuck?!” They moved to dodge his blows and drew their weapons.
A high-pitched chortle sounded behind Aloth and Braith. The bandits’ cries had drawn the wichts.
Hurry, over there by the trees before they are upon us!
Aloth whispered an incantation and darted forward with alarming speed. You have a plan? He looked at her anxiously.
Yes, but I’ll need your assistance. Are you alright with that?
Yes. Aloth wasn’t sure what she had in mind but didn’t think they had time to negotiate.
Close your eyes. Trust me. Braith placed her hands on either side of his head.
The wichts leaped out from behind the trees, running straight for the struggling bandits. Aloth forced himself to keep his eyes closed during the commotion. And then suddenly he felt light-headed. Grasping behind him he felt the hard surface of a tree and leaned against it for support. The world seemed to be spinning and all he could hear was Braith’s warm breath against his neck.
“Open your eyes” She spoke aloud.
Aloth’s eyes fluttered open, adjusting to the light of the campfire. Braith was still hanging on around his waist though she looked exhausted.
“What was that?” Aloth looked around at the bodies of the bandits and wichts. “You killed them?”
“No they killed each other. I just kept them from noticing us. I let them think we were part of this tree.” Braith said, her voice a faint whisper.
“Oh Braith.” He slumped down against the tree, cradling her in his arms. “We still haven’t treated your injuries.”
“At least we are safe now.” She gave him a faint smile.
“I’m going to search the bandits’ camp for supplies.” He helped Braith situate herself against the tree and began rummaging through the crates and bags piled up on one side of the camp. “Definitely bandits.” He said after a while. “They certainly couldn’t have acquired all of this legally, it looks like they were robbing unfortunate merchants.” At last he returned. “I found this elixir.” He uncorked a glass bottle containing a pale blue liquid. He sniffed the vapors. The faintly sweet aroma of a healing elixir met his nostrils. “I think this should help you feel better.” He held it to her lips so that she could drink.
“Thank you.”
“Of course. Here, let me bandage your wounds.” He reached his arms around her waist to lift her up. Suddenly Braith burst into tears. “Braith?” He wrapped his arms around her in an embrace, stroking her hair.
“I’m sorry. I’m not sure what I’m feeling.”
“What do you mean?”
“I don’t know. It’s just new and painful.”
“You’ve been through quite a bit tonight. We should get back to camp so that you can rest.”
Braith looked up, meeting his gaze. “I..like this.”
“I can’t say that I enjoy seeing you distraught and hurt but I enjoy your company.”
“I mean I like this.” She burrowed her face in his leather armor.
“Is it different from when we were together earlier?”
“I believe so. I feel different. I don’t know how to explain.”
“I like this too.” Aloth smiled at her. She looked up again, her face mere inches from his. Aloth inclined his head and gently kissed her lips. He suddenly jerked away. “My apologies. I should not have--” Braith pressed her lips against his. Acutely aware of his erection Aloth tried to angle his body away from her but Braith shook her head and pulled herself against him.
“We really should be getting back to camp.” He said at last. “Here let me bandage your wounds.” He began wrapping a narrow strip of cloth around the cuts and abrasions on her skin.
“Your heart is pounding.” She lifted a hand to his chest. “You’re nervous.”
“It seems that around you I feel something I’m not accustomed to feeling.” He gave her a wry smile. And then, “Please don’t read my thoughts.”
“Of course. I told you I don’t like to violate the privacy of others.”
“I appreciate it.”
“You’re welcome.”
“Oh and I did find this.” He handed her a brown wool tunic. “It was the nicest thing I could find. It seems the bandits don’t harass tailors.”
Braith smiled. “Thank you. It’s lovely.”
“I can’t stand the feel of these Dyrwoodan wools myself. If we are ever in Defiance Bay I’ll find you something more pleasant.”
Braith smiled and shook her head. “It’s really not so bad.”
“Of course if anyone could make Wyr wool look pleasing it would be you.” He gave her a smile. Despite its material, he did not fail to notice that the wool tunic fit her rather well, hugging all of the most delightful parts of her body.
“Well, we should be getting back. The elixir seems to have helped a great deal. I think I can walk on my own.” Braith reached out to take Aloth’s hand. “What will we tell Edér about Durance?”
Aloth grimaced at the sound of the man’s name. “The wichts got him. It is half true at least.”
They arrived at the camp shortly. Edér was still snoring.“Are you tired enough to be able to sleep over that? I think I might just be.”
“Yes, but can I sleep with you?” Braith cast him a hopeful look.
“You may--” Aloth faltered, slightly taken aback. Collecting himself he continued. “But let me find a cotton shirt for you to wear. I cannot sleep next to wool.” He searched through his pack until he found a spare clean shirt. “Here you are.” He removed his armor and outerwear and was about to climb into his bedroll but then turned to Braith. “After you.” He held the covers back for her and then slipped in himself. Braith snuggled up against him. “Aiie! Your feet are cold!” He exclaimed.
“I’m cold.” She said matter-of-factly.
“No it’s fine I was just startled.” He ran a hand along the thigh she had draped over his legs. “Goosebumps! Of course you must’ve gotten cold this evening!” He pulled her into an embrace.
“I think I smell clove oil.”
“Ah. Yes, I find it preferable to many of the aromas of Dyrwood.” He frowned. “Does it bother you?”
“Not at all. Just unexpected. Strange how easy it is to forget the scents of home. The servants often combed perfume oil into my hair. I never cared for it at the time but it seems I have become nostalgic.” She smiled wistfully “Surprising how many memories are contained in a vial of oil.”
Soon Braith’s breathing indicated that she was asleep. He didn’t know how anyone could sleep after what she had been through that night. Braith was impressively resilient, probably far more so than she realized. Aloth fell asleep with his face buried in her hair.
