From behind Hawke, someone cracked a whip. She craned her neck to see what was happening, but the line holding her up was merciless in keeping her where she was. Her legs were already beginning to ache, her hands useless behind her back.
“What...?” she managed, shifting her weight from leg to leg.
“I told you,” Sebastian said, flushing as he tried to look at her without looking at her chest, “penance.”
He reached out a hand and was handed the whip.
“For aiding and abetting criminals,” he said, the words like a prayer, “for murdering the duly appointed church protector of this city... for being an apostate and a maleficar and your every other sin... this is what people will remember, the price of turning away from the Chantry.”
“Fuck the Chantry,” Hawke spat.
His face went bright red, his lust warring with anger. The whip lashed out before either of them was really aware of it, curling around her exposed torso and then pulling her closer to him before rescinding. She grit her teeth and closed her eyes, the pain nothing for a heartbeat, but then...
A searing cold followed the line of the whip, an agonizing numbness that exploded into sensation. She howled, bucking, the movement sending fresh waves slamming through her breasts and into the rest of her body. Hawke shook her head, struggled to find her footing as the whip lashed out and caught her again.
Sebastian was as much a marksman with the whip as he was with a bow – the whip kissed her belly and back, her thighs and ass, but it never rose above her breasts, never came close to freeing her from the cruel device that kept her standing even when her legs no longer would.
And still, the whipping continued.
His strokes were leisurely, she saw, his face at peace. He really thinks he's doing this for my own good, she thought. He really thinks he's saving my soul. They were the last coherent thoughts she had, her mind shattered by the abuse she suffered as he circled her, predatory, the whip lashing out to find new pieces of unmarked flesh to taint.
When new pain stopped exploding across her skin, she was coating in sweat, her head hanging limply. She'd stopped crying hours before, her head bowed and vision fuzzy, her breaths shallow and ragged, every inch of her skin simpering with a dull echoing pain. She whimpered when fingers curled in her hair, gasping when her head was pulled up.
“Accept Andraste's love into your heart, Hawke,” Sebastian whispered. He'd stripped off his shirt, was covered in sweat, and the conflict in his eyes made her hate him. “Give up the magic you've already lost. Submit to Tranquility and my authority and all this can end.”
“F-fuck the Chantry,” whimpered Hawke. “And f-fuck you.”
She spat in his face.
He let her go, stepping back and accepting a towel from one of his minions to clean his face. His friends are here, Hawke thought, the words small in her mind, struggling against aching tides. Where are my friends? She called on magic that still would not answer her, closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
“The Chantry here was corrupt,” she said, the strength of her voice freezing the world. “The Circle just as bad, but their corruption was a result of Meredith's cruelty. It is never wrong to fight back against those who would oppress or enslave you.”
“It is the law!”
“Just like it was in Tevinter?”
“You will accept the Chantry's judgment!”
“Fuck the Chantry!” she roared, glaring at him. His eyes bugged out, wild. She could see how his arm quivered from exhaustion, see how tired he looked and laughed. “You've tortured me all day and you're the one who's exhausted? Fuck you, Sebastian.”
The whip lashed out again, making her scream and kick. This time it found the delicate skin underneath her breast, the tip exploding there and feeling like an Ogre was punching her there. She howled, dancing and kicking and trying to escape as Sebastian whipped her, but there was nowhere to go and nowhere to escape.
Still, laughter marred her cries, driving him to greater cruelties, and for a moment her vision was unclouded – she could see the fell green light around his form. She frowned through the pain, gritting her teeth and tried to stare, trying to clear the sweat and tears from her eyes.
Hawke blinked, and the world changed.
