Today was a big day for Jin and his team. It was the day that he arrived in Rustboro City, the location of the first Hoenn Gym. This was an excellent chance to prove himself and train Nell and Kitsu. Jin knew that the Gym would be a fun challenge. However, they might want to do some training before so that way all 3 of his Pokémon had a chance to win. Yuuki was in agreement. They were at a bit of a type disadvantage since it was a rock-type gym. Jin took them a little past Rustboro and began training, especially training Kitsu and Nell. Kitsu's early evolution made things a bit complicated since it could only learn some moves as a Vulpix. She apparently knew Flamethrower, Confuse Ray, Feint Attack, and Quick Attack. Jin only wanted his Pokémon to do their best. He didn't want to push them too far, so he made sure they weren't forced to fight against anyone that outclassed them. Yuuki followed Jin to the spot where they would train.
"So, do you have a strategy for us, Jin?" she asked, knowing very well that they would struggle. Unlike the win they had from the tournament's finals, their opponent this time would use 2 Pokémon, not 1, so hoping to outlast her was a bad idea. Especially since Kitsu's Fire-type made her weak to Rock-type attacks.
"Well, Roxanne uses Rock-Types, so they're likely very slow." Jin said, thinking up his strategy. "Maybe if you three can out-speed them, you could get an advantage over them"
"Yeah, we should all be faster than them" Yuuki said in agreement. "Perhaps, bring out Kitsu and little Nell?"
"Right." he took the Poké Balls of the two other Pokémon on his team and let the two out

Yuuki and Kitsu nodded their agreement, but Nell spoke softly "Um, I don't know how fast I am, but I'm definitely not as fast as Yuuki and Kitsu, will we be okay?
Jin knew that was the case but kneeled down to get down to Nell's level. "Don't worry, Nell. I have plans for how you can help. And don't worry about speed. I'll make sure you'll have a good chance against the other Pokémon." he gave her another hug.
Nell smiled at how much her new trainer had confidence in her, "O-okay. I promise to do my best then."
"That's all I ask for, Nell." he told her. He wanted them to win, but didn't want them to become violent, bloodthirsty machines like what a lot of criminal teams had done with their Pokémon.
"So what's first, Jin?" Yuuki asked.
The group spent a good portion of the day training. They worked hard since none of they all wanted to win, especially for Jin. Besides some breaks to make sure no one was exhausted or overexerting themselves, the only time they stopped was for lunch. After that, they trained a little more before Jin thought they were ready. He made his way back into town and over to the gym.

"Well then show me what you've got, kid!" the two got onto their sides of where they'd be battling - a dusty battlefield with large boulders all over the place.
A moderator was off to the side, of the battlefield. "The challenger and Roxanne will be allowed up to 3 Pokémon each. Only the challenger is allowed to substitute Pokémon during battle."
Jin knew who to go with first. He admitted to himself that Roxanne was actually pretty cute, but made sure not to distract himself - especially since he knew that Yuuki would want to give him a congratulatory fucking after.
Roxanne tossed out her Poke Ball and out popped Geodude, the rock with a face and bulky arms. "Shake it off, Geodude and use Rock Throw” Geodude took a chunk out of the ring and threw it full speed at Yuuki. Yuuki managed to dodge, but just barely.
"Copycat that Rock Throw, Yuuki." he told her. He figured the surprise would catch them off guard. Yuuki did a somersault and a rock formed in her paws like a ball of yarn, which she promptly bowled toward Geodude.
"Defense Curl” Geodude complied just before it hit with the rock and got slammed into the wall.
"Now Sing, Yuuki." he told her, hoping the move would work and put the rock-type to sleep. But, unfortunately, it failed. Geodude shrugged off the singing
"Geodude, use Rock Throw again." This time it struck Yuuki hard and was a critical hit, but she was still okay. Yuuki got up confidentially despite being a bit dirty and scraped up. Jin looked nervous.
"Disarming voice again, Yuuki." he told her, trying to keep his cool. He was always used to Yuuki being his first and only option, so it made sense that he was nervous. Plus, just seeing his Pokémon getting hurt worried him. Yuuki did disarming voice and Geodude almost dropped right there, but got up once more
"Rock Tomb” Suddenly sharp boulders rained from the ceiling. Yuuki was only clipped this time, but still up. Now it was much more difficult to maneuver around the field. This is why Jin was lucky enough to have TM's, and had used one on Yuuki just before they got in this fight.
"Dig, Yuuki!" he commanded. Yuuki promptly dug underground as Geodude used Rock Tomb again and was safe from the attack.
"Geodude use Defense Curl" but Yuuki sprung up and whapped him one before he got it off. Geodude fainted.
"Geodude is unable to battle; the first round goes to the challenger." The judge called out.

Roxanne smiled. "Good work Jin, but let’s see how you handle my best Pokémon. Come on out Nosepass!"
"I'm making a Switch." he told the judge. "Yuuki come back to take a rest." he wanted to have her rest up after that tough fight against Geodude. Yuuki hopped back and rubbed against Jin's leg. "All I care is that you do your best you can, Kitsu." he told her. "Now let's start with Feint Attack." he told her. Kitsu lunged forward at Nosepass, but at the last minute halted as her shadow lunged at him. Nosepass blocked early and Ninetales struck the rock-type with some sort of mystic power from her tails.
"Nosepass, Defense Curl!" Roxanne shouted. Nosepass got its defenses up despite not really looking like it balled up much. But Jin knew that only affected his physical defense, and not his special defense.
"Flamethrower, Kitsu!" he told the fire-type. It wasn't very effective, but it still hurt as Kitsu expunged a stream of firm at the foe.
"Nosepass, Rock Tomb” Sharp boulders, but far more this time; fell from the sky and lunged up from the ground all around Kitsu. Kitsu was struck, but stood her ground. The battlefield was becoming very difficult terrain.
"Kitsu, try navigating with Quick Attack." he suggested to her, thinking that might work. Kitsu darted between rocks until she lunged at Nosepass, but it shrugged off the blow.

"Stand your ground, Nosepass, Rock Throw!" The Rock it threw bounced off one rock into another rock next to Kitsu and careened into her. She did a fair job of minimizing the damage since it wasn't a direct hit. Kitsu was starting to seem shaky on her feet though
Jin didn't want to push her too hard, so he withdrew her from the fight before grabbing Nell's Poke Ball and sending her out in Kitsu's place. Jin smiled, knowing how much Nell had trained.
"Alright Nell, Double Team!" he told her. He figured that since Confuse Ray already screwed with Nosepass that Nell's tricks could add to that.
"Rock Tomb again!" Rocks rained down, but one landed on Nosepass while the others only landed on fake images of Nell. She was untouched.
"Try Confusion!" he commanded to Nell. Nell began to send other boulders flying at Nosepass but Nosepass attacked first

Jin was nervous, but figured it was all or nothing on this last attack. "Nell! Magical Leaf!" he commanded to her

"Nosepass is unable to battle, the challenger wins."

As the group left, Roxanne was suddenly confused. 'Did he just talk to his Pokémon like he could understand it?'
