Chapter 6
The days became routine once again for Bartleby with a few additions added. He would go to work and everyday at midday, Robotnik would come and just stand and watch as he worked but Rotor helped him to keep his focus on the task, using it as a means of harnessing his anxiety. He refused to acknowledge the man was even there. It was easy at first because Robotnik seemed to know not to try and talk.
He watched as Sonia came downstairs with a fresh apple turnover for Bartleby and Rotor to sample. He glared at the hedgehog who he felt had stolen his godson from him. He heard them talking. “So dear, Periwinkle called and asked if I would sing tonight. I said yes. I won’t be able to be on stage much longer.”
Bartleby chuckled. “That sounds great my love… my sweet… I will be there of course, right up front as always. And tomorrow, we have the OBGYN. Our first ultrasound…” He held her close to him.
Robotnik had heard enough. So his enemy was now pregnant. Bartleby was past the point of no return with her. He didn’t seem to mind it. In fact, he seemed quite pleased. But she had given him a clue as to how to get Bartleby to talk to him. So, Periwinkle was here. He turned and left.
Aleena sat in their hotel room, going over photos she had of her children. She’d taken them from afar. She looked up as Robotnik entered. “No luck?” She banished the photos with a wave of her hand.
He shook his head. “But you know that. Did you know that she was pregnant? Why didn’t you tell me?”
She sighed. “It wasn’t my place. I told you, he is not happy that I told you where he was. If I told you and they found out, we both would have been shut out. If we are both shut out then there’s nothing we can do.”
The man growled as he knew she was right. “Your daughter is singing tonight. Bartleby will be with her. Where?”
She nodded. “She sings at the Lotus on fifth avenue. Be careful Robotnik. We found them. If we scare them off, we may lose them forever. They’ll run again and this time we would never find them. Be careful.”
He glared at her. “How can I make things right if he won’t talk to me? I have no power here. His boss keeps threatening to call the Watch. Oh… saying that hurts… His boss… Doing manual labor and living in a hovel.”
“I wouldn’t call it a hovel. It’s not his mansion but it’s a decent one bedroom. And I can easily add a second for the baby for them.” Aleena reasoned. “He’s happy there. He likes the work.” She went to visit them every night for dinner. “He actually reminds me a little of you. He has the same skills. No doubt from watching you. I’m glad he’s finally able to cultivate that… You should be too. No matter how he feels about you, he still is following in your footsteps. He still remembers the man you used to be. And he obviously still loves that man. That man will always be his godfather. I wonder whatever happened to him… I would have liked to meet him…” She stood up. “Well, if she’s singing, I should get ready.”
Robotnik heard her question. It was not directed in an angry or insulting way. He could not help but think about it.
Aleena came out from the bathroom, dressed in a casual yet somehow elegant teal dress that cut off right at her knees with a ruffled skirt and three-quarter length sleeves sitting off the shoulder. She saw her former foe staring into the distance silently. She could no longer consider him an enemy. They had both seen each other at their lowest and had established an odd camaraderie in their goals. However, she couldn’t really consider him a friend. The man was still too closed-off and guarded.
Finally, he released a breath. “I suppose I should… get ready as well…” He said as he regarded her appearance. She was not the person he expected. She was kind and compassionate to his plight. She had no reason to be kind to him after what he had done to her and her children. She had no reason to give him the time of day. However, she didn’t simply let him forget his sins. It was clear that this situation was his fault and he needed to figure out how to rectify it. “What sort of music does this place play? What sort of venue is it?” He asked as he removed his armor and replaced it with a white casual suit.
Aleena considered it as she silently appraised his outfit choice. “It’s a bar and dance club. My daughter sings an eclectic selection when she’s there. It’s owned by the former actor, Luke Periwinkle. Honestly, she’s the only reason to go… Periwinkle would much rather be acting but he’s afraid to reenter the limelight.”
Sitting at the round checkered table, spotted with stick and ick, Robotnik could see what she meant. He rubbed a bit of the sticky stuff between his fingers. “Really?” He asked Aleena who giggled and waved her hand. The table became spotless with her magic.
She smiled. “Told you… poor guy doesn’t really seem to care but he does this because he has to do something.” Aleena turned her eyes to the stage as the lights came down and the curtain rose.
Sonia stepped out onto the stage wearing a white halter top which accented her bosom. The white lacy skirt billowed out to just above her ankles. A white ribbon accented her fuschia hair and spikes.
Her magenta hand reached out to take the microphone as she began to sink. “I don't believe in frettin' and grievin'. Why mess around with strife?”
Robotnik watched the hedgehog princess, listening to her sing of living a desired way of life. Of a cottage small as opposed to a mansion that was spacious and wide, of a house ringing with joy and laughter and love. The patrons threw money into a purple bucket on the stage marked TIPS. There were other buckets for those who played instruments.
His eyes began to scan the patrons subtly. He saw the owner of the establishment, the pale blue hedgehog he had terrorized into hiding here. The man didn’t seem at all happy with his current lot. Robotnik could see that he longed to be on stage.
Finally, he found the former aristocrat watching his lovely wife as she deftly went from singing to a little light dancing. He saw the expression and realized how carefree and happy he seemed. It was troubling that he could not remember the last time he’d seen Bartleby so happy.
Sonia finished her first set and smiled at the patrons. “Good evening everyone. Thank you for coming. I want to apologize for my lesser energy while dancing. You see, I have to be very careful for the next several months…”
The crowd erupted with applause as she explained the reason for her added precautions. He could see Bartleby’s face light up with delight. It was clear he was excited to be a father.
When she finished a few more songs, an intermission was announced and the disc jockey took over. Seeing Bartleby get up and go towards the back, he knew it was his chance. “I’m going to try again.”
Aleena looked at him in alarm. “No, don’t. He won’t take that well and you’ll get us thrown out.”
He growled. “I have to try…” Robotnik stood and carefully, quickly made his way to the same corridor. He just managed to catch up. “Bartleby…” He said, watching as he froze. “Look… I won’t come any closer… just listen to me… I’m… I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you. I did it for you. To make her come to your rescue. And it worked. I did it all for you… I was trying to help you…” He said quickly as the boy stood immobilized by fear.
Bartleby clenched his fists and grit his teeth. “Stop… stop…” He trembled. “Stop justifying yourself… your venom… You’re a snake, a deadly viper… I don’t know what happened to you… but you changed… I defended you when people said you were evil and selfish. I stood up for you and supported you. You did what you did to try and hurt her. You used me… I can’t… I can’t… Just leave me alone!”
Robotnik watched as the mink dismissed his sad attempt at an apology and went into the dressing room. He needed to do something but he knew if he pushed that he would simply be thrown out. He went back out to the main floor and looked over at Periwinkle. He could do something and it would certainly garner him favor.
He approached the former actor. “Mr Periwinkle.” He announced his presence. He couldn’t help the pang in his chest when the hedgehog took a look of absolute terror. “I have a business proposition for you… I would like to help you reclaim your former glory.”
When he finally returned to their table with a satisfied smile that he’d hit upon a solution, Aleena could not help being worried. “Were you actually able to reconcile?”
He shook his head. “Nope. I just bought a club and gave Periwinkle more than enough money to regain his own dreams. And I can transform this dive into a grand club.”
Aleena smiled. “That was a very nice gesture. He will be much happier living his dreams again.”
Robotnik nodded. “Yes and this means I’ll see my godson regularly and maybe finally… I will be able to make amends. And… since I can’t do it alone…” He pushed the paperwork at her with a pen. Keeping his hand over the top line.
The purple hedgehog smiled and signed her name on the second line. He was a good man… in his way… He just had trouble letting that good side out. She wanted to see it more.
“He what!” Sonia shrieked in the dressing room while Bartleby struggled to stay on his feet.
Periwinkle nodded. “He offered me two billion mobiums for this place. And he said I should use it to restart my acting career. I couldn’t say no. He gave me a check right out.” He showed them the check. “I’m sorry but… I miss acting so much. It’s my real passion…”
Bartleby nodded. “He’s trying to get me to talk to him. It won’t work. I don’t care what he does. He won’t fool me again.”
Sonia nodded. “What does he plan to do? Bulldoze it? Make it another shit hole like in Robotropolis?”
Periwinkle shook his head. “He said he wants to clean it up and he wants to give you a regular singing job. He said he liked how you make your husband smile when you sing. I think he means it…” He said.
Bartleby considered it. “He’s the reason you had to leave acting. The reason you had to come here… Whatever his motives, he made it right…” He sat down with an agonizing groan. “I won’t talk to him. Fine, he owns the club… Sonia, love, if you want to take the offer, I wouldn’t blame you.”
Sonia put her hand in his. “I could give it a try. I don’t want to stop singing now. I love it too much. And you still don’t have to have anything to do with him.” She kissed him tenderly. “If it means you won’t feel safe coming to see me sing then… I understand. We can tape it. Or… I could give you a private show at home…” She winked at him causing him to laugh despite himself.
“Oh my love, how did I get so lucky to have you for my wife…” Bartleby kissed her while Periwinkle chuckled.
“Well, I’ll be gone by morning. It’s been such a pleasure working with you Sonia. But I now I have to take a page your books and live my life, my dreams. I need to get them back.” He told her.
Sonia nodded and hugged Periwinkle. “Thank you for everything Luke, it’s been so nice to know you. Our hopes and wishes go with you.”
