**Installment 7**
Caellia woke up and blinked her eyes confusedly. Why couldn’t she see? She shook her head slightly and ignored the tendrils of hair that covered her face lightly. She blinked her eyes again and then tried to raise one hand to rub them and found she couldn’t. Testing how far she could move her hands she felt the coarse fibers of the rope and was awake instantly. She became abruptly aware of the fact that she was no longer upright, but was laying down on something soft, warm, and that it was now dark. And her hands and feet were tied. Staying still for a few seconds, she tried to determine if she was alone.
The only sounds she could hear were outside, a few fires, the striders shuffling about and growling lowly. She didn’t hear anything that could be the dark elves and orcs however. She could hear some snoring from the orcs, but it sounded kind of distant and muffled, as if she was in a building. That had to be it, she was inside. The sounds were too muffled for her to be outdoors.
She shifted so that she could look around the place she was in. Sitting up she looked around the darkened room. Looking around she saw no light seeping from anywhere and assumed it must also be dark outside. She listened closely for any hint of movement anywhere, inside or out and heard nothing. Confident she was alone she began to quickly work on untying the rope around her wrist. If she could sneak out and get to a strider she might be able to escape while everyone was asleep. The striders responded to anyone and would respond to her as well she was sure.
Once her wrists were free she started on her ankles. She was glad she had learned how to manage magically enchanted ropes. This would’ve been a lot more difficult if she hadn’t learned. With a light snap, the bonds freed themselves under her fingers and she stood up and stretched to work the kinks out before setting about the room. She walked slowly so as not to bump into anything. Finding the door, she sucked in a deep breath and silently counted her heartbeats while she listened outside for any sounds nearby. She heard nothing and with a quick spell to hasten her steps and a quick breath she opened the door to the outside soundlessly.
Looking around she saw no one immediately outside the area. She did see where a fire had recently been and even more recently been extinguished by the smell of it. She listened for a beat then took off in the direction the striders seemed to be. She moved past the trees and into the bushes looking for the hulking beasts. As she spotted them and began to make her way to them she was thrown viciously into a nearby tree. Giving a sharp cry of pain she looked to see who and where her attacker was. Her head spun in all directions but she saw nothing. Looking once more at the striders she gathered her legs under her and took off in a desperate dash to reach them.
Just the same as before, she was brutally flung against a tree trunk, the bark of the tree digging into her delicate back and leaving stinging cuts. Blinking through tears of pain she shoved herself off the tree to get a good look at her surroundings. She would have to deal with this now or she would not make it to the beasts at all. She was still sore and tired from the week long journey. Nathavin had pushed everyone hard to make considerable ground and had not left her alone for any length of time. Her muscles were weak from doing nothing all week and the sudden exercise they were receiving was painful. She stilled her breath and waited for the attack she knew was coming.
She stayed like that for several minutes, almost refusing to breathe as she listened for her assailant. Deciding that she needed to get to the beasts before her spell for swift footedness wore off; she bounded from her position in a desperate bid for freedom. Four paces, six, ten…she might make it! Only twenty paces more!
She distantly heard a sound she was familiar with, the sound of a bowstring being drawn taut. Praying to Eva, her eyes flooded with tears, she barreled toward the striders. She heard the soft ‘thump’ of the arrow being released a second before the impact on her shoulder drove her to the ground. She barely brought her hands up in time to cushion the impact but the arrow had made one arm weaker and it collapsed under her, throwing her roughly into the dirt.
“Do not move.” The sound of a second arrow being drawn for fire punctuated the sentence.
Caellia involuntarily trembled. She could’ve handled anyone finding her but him. Swallowing past the hard lump in her throat she answered him, “I will not stay here and I will fight you till the last of my strength is gone Nathavin.”
“You will do no such thing Caellia. You traded your life for Goryn’s. You belong to me now.” Was his rough voiced reply, “Stand up and walk toward my voice.”
She choked back a sob, “I ‘belong’ to no one, least of all you.” She glared in his direction from under her bangs.
“You do now. Stand up and come here, I am tired of this game.”
“NO! I do not belong to you! I belong to Goryn! He is the only one I will ever belong to! I love him!” Caellia screamed, disturbing the nearby sleeping dark elves.
“You little fool!” Two arrows landed swiftly in front of her shaking form mere seconds before Nathavin did. Grasping her chin in his palm he jerked her head upwards to face him. “You will never see him again! I will take his castle by force and you will sit beside me as my queen as I destroy him and all those who side with him.”
Caellia gasped in pain as her head was wrenched sharply upwards. Her eyes glazed over in fear at the sight of his tightened features. He was extremely angry and she was in a very dangerous predicament. She had to get him to calm down, she doubted if he even knew he had pulled his dagger from its sheath and had his left hand clenched tightly around it. Gulping slightly, she whispered in terror, “I’m sorry, please, forgive me.”
He relaxed slightly then stood up, pulling her up with him. “We are going back to the hut.” His voice left no room for argument as he gripped her upper arm tightly. “I will remove the arrow from your shoulder and bandage it. This time however, I will not bind your wrists and ankles. I will stay inside with you to make sure you don’t try to escape me again.”
As they walked closer to the hut, he spied the scroll he’d put down when he’d hid from her when she got up. He gripped her arm even tighter unconsciously as he thought about its contents. One thing was certain, whether he stayed in there with her the rest of the night or not, she could not be allowed to see that scroll, no one could ever see that scroll until he had a new plan.
