Lyja stared at the small pile of dirt on the table before her and exhaled loudly. She took the rock from her pocket and placed it next to the soil, taking several deep breaths, centering herself.Starting with the soil she focused her mind and began to quietly chant, asking the spirits for strength. It started as a low whisper, gradually getting louder the closer the spirits came. Her toes began to tingle, the sensation travelling up through her body, she placed her palms flat on the table and willed the dirt to move.It stirred as if moved by a breeze.Lyja concentrated her will, giving the soil form.It swirled in the air, spiralling gracefully, shaping itself into a bird.Lyja sat back in her chair as she watched it fly around the room. She brought it to rest on the table letting it fall back into a pile of dirt.Inga clapped excitedly from the bed as she lay on her tummy watching Lyja practice “Nice!”. Lyja smiled, feeling a little bit better about her effort. She took a deep breath and grimaced at the rock, this would be more difficult, rock spirits were stubborn and harder to coerce. She tried to get a feel for it gently calling to it in her mind,”There it is” she started to chant asking for its aid.It moved away, fading into the ether. She pulled it back, willing it to comply, placing her hands on the table she sent a force of effort towards the rock.Beads of sweat broke out on her forehead and her eyeballs burned “Don’t help!” She said through gritted teeth “Sorry” Inga said, chastened.Lyja groaned as she wrestled with the stone spirit and sent one final push towards the rock;rolling it gently off the table. She scrabbled toward the bucket in the corner, vomiting and shaking with the effort.”Are you alright” Inga said as she wet a washcloth and brought it to Lyja, wiping her face gently. “I can’t do stone” she said trying to catch her breath “They are too strong” she shook her head as the tears came “How am I supposed to bring down a fortress wall if I can't move a little rock”.Inga pushed back the stray hairs from her face and cupped her cheeks “You’re not alone Lyja,Asdis and I,we are with you” she placed a kiss on Lyja’s forehead “Let us help”.Lyja smiled sadly through her tears and gestured to the table with her head “Your turn”.
Later that day the girls sat around a table in the palace gardens eating their noon meal.”We can do this” Asdis said around a mouthful of stew “Between us we can bully a few rock spirits”. “Ja” Inga agreed “Imagine what we could do together!”. Lyja was lost in her thoughts, worrying about what was to come this evening. She left her meal untouched, unable to stomach the thought of eating. “That wall over there” Asdis pointed to a low dilapidated wall built with good sized stones.Lyja looked “What?” “Let’s try it together, see what happens” they walked over and stood hand in hand focusing on the same stone. They pushed together, the dirt around the stone block started to fall to the floor as the stone moved inch by inch until it fell to the floor. The girls followed, “Oh,my head!” Asdis rolled over onto her front resting her forehead in the dirt “I feel sick”. Inga tried to stand, using Asdis to steady herself “Everything’s moving”.Lyja managed to get to her feet, despite the ground rolling around beneath them. She held out her arms trying to keep her balance as she shuffled toward the table, dropping heavily onto a chair. “We moved it!” A slow smile spread across her face as she realised what they had done. “But at what cost?” Complained Asdis who was still on the ground. “How did you get over there?” Inga asked “I can't move”. “I don’t feel too bad,not like last time.”Lyja stood testing out her senses, she felt almost normal so she went over to help her sisters, dragging two chairs with her.She helped them sit and gave them each a cup of wine, “Deep breaths, that’s it.” She said as she rubbed their backs “We’re making progress” she said hopefully. Asdis scoffed from between her knees “Is that what you call it?”.
Sitting alone on her bed Lyja stared at the wall, lost in her thoughts as she waited to be summoned to the Ceremony.Una had tried to prepare her, telling her what to expect, still she was filled with trepidation.Becoming a bearer of a Stave of Yggdrasil was an honor offered to very few.Una’s was the only one in England as far as anyone was aware, and it was being given to her.Lyja felt the heavy weight of the responsibility already.Asdis would have been a better choice, she was far more accomplished and forthright.Asdis was tall and could be intimidating if you didn’t know her well, the Jarls would take her seriously.Halla tapped on the door frame, interrupting her thoughts. It was time.Lyja’s tummy turned over and she felt a wave of nausea hit hard. Her hands shook as she removed the necklace Ivarr had given her, handing it to Halla for safe keeping.Halla gestured to the door and offered Lyja her hand. She took it but as Halla walked towards the door Lyja resisted,Halla turned giving her arm a tug, trying to encourage Lyja to follow. “I'm scared Halla,I can’t do what Una does.I’m not enough”.Lyja broke down, quietly sobbing into her cloak.Halla knelt before her and gently prised her hands from her face, she wiped away Lyja’s tears and cupped her face forcing Lyja to look at her. “You have to” she tried to convey as gently as she could.Halla pulled Lyja into her arms and held her tightly, rocking her back and forth in her arms as she tried to comfort her.She let out a deep sigh as she stood, backing away slowly toward the door. She held out her hand to Lyja asking her to follow once again.Lyja stood and followed her, they walked in somber silence down the stairs and through the empty throne room. The palace had been cleared out for the ceremony. She stopped at the garden threshold, looking out into the darkness. She saw her peers lit up in firelight as they waited for her arrival. If she wanted to turn back now was the time. Lyja exhaled loudly as she stepped into the garden and walked into the dark.
Lyja stood in the centre of the palace gardens,it was cold and it had begun to rain.It made the large metal braziers sizzle. She was surrounded by every Volva in Eoforwic, all twelve of them. She shivered as the freezing rain ran in rivulets down her naked back.Una was addressing the small crowd, asking them to hold hands and form a circle around Lyja.Halla and another Elder from the South named Gudrun left a gap so Una could walk between them. She held the staff before her as she slowly walked towards Lyja, the gap closed behind her.The group of women began to chant, calling the spirits to them.Lyja placed her hands on the staff above and between Una’s.Together they pressed the stave into the dirt.Ripples of energy travelled up the staff making Lyja’s body vibrate, the air thrummed with energy making her skin tingle, heat began to spread, radiating from the pit of her belly,it made the back of her knees itch.Suddenly it was as if she had been plunged into ice cold water she gasped for breath,An incredible sensation of power travelled up her arms, she screamed as it overwhelmed her senses, her vision clouded, gradually becoming bright blinding white, her eyes rolled into the back of her head and her mouth foamed as she fainted, clutching the staff to her chest.
Lyja’s eyes opened on a bleak landscape. There was nothing before her but the Great Tree Yggdrasil looming gigantic in the distance. She walked towards it,her feet sinking in the black sand as the icy breeze gently blew through her hair.A figure appeared on the horizon as she walked past huge rocks of ice.Urðr.Lyja felt no emotion as she stood before the Norn.It did not speak to her as a boat rose from the sand beneath them, lifting them as the tide pulled them to the shore.Urðr escorted her up the grassy slope, past trees that rained their blossom in the breeze, through fields of fragrant flowers. They walked in silence towards an archway festooned with ivy and white blooms.Beneath it stood a tall woman, her arms outstretched in welcome.Tears fell down Lyja’s face as Freyja smiled warmly, she felt as if she was a child that had seen the face of her mother after being lost for far too long, that she was being welcomed home. “Do you accept my blessing?” She heard the question in her soul and she answered with it “I am”.Lyja felt a deep sense of belonging and love as she was embraced by the Goddess.
Lyja’s body shook violently in the mud as the Volur looked on still holding each other’s hands, chanting loudly, pouring their collective will into Lyja. The runes painted on Lyja’s body began to glow with a gentle green, gradually growing brighter in the darkness. Her body relaxed as the spasms slowed to a stop.Lyja was carried between her sisters, lifted high above them as they sang prayers to the Goddess. The cold rain washed over her skin, cleaning away the mud and dirt.Halla bore her staff as they carried Lyja into the palace, through the empty throne room and up the stairs.Laying her gently on the bed,she was left in the care of her sisters. They spent the night in vigil as Lyja lay unconscious.
When she finally awoke, late the next day she felt as weak as a kitten.Even speaking was an effort. She lay there in her bed as her sisters sat by her side slumped in their chairs as they slept.Lyja lay in the bed mentally checking herself over. She didn’t feel any different than she had before the ceremony but there was something.A faint whisper at the edge of her thoughts,as if she were not alone in her head. When she tried to focus on it she couldn’t,it seemed to move just out of comprehension. “Was it a spirit?’ she thought, remembering the feel of the spirits she had encountered recently.Lyja cleared her mind, attempting to reach a meditative state. It seemed to come closer, tentatively wanting to fill the empty space. She let it come nearer, letting it move around freely.Lyja sent gentle waves of peaceful thoughts, trying to greet the little spirit but it backed away slowly dispersing into the cusp of her consciousness. She opened her eyes and sighed, she was going to have to earn its trust.Inga awoke with a gasp “Lyja!”,she woke Asdis. “Inga go tell Una and Halla” she said in a whisper as she pushed her gently to the door. “Oh Lyja! We have been so worried, you’ve slept so long” she said quietly as she sat on the bed beside her Sister “We were so scared for you” She said as she cupped Lyja’s cheek, gently stroking with her thumb. Lyja opened her mouth to answer but Asdis shook her head “Don’t talk, save your strength”. She laid a light kiss on Lyja’s forehead and pulled the blankets up to her chin.Lyja‘s eyes fluttered shut as she fell into a natural slumber.
Ivarr rode through Eorforwic with his men,he had been out of the city for two days clearing a path towards Aella. There had been hard won battles as they fought for control of the few miles between the city and Bamburgh.Losing and gaining the land in turn. His men were tired and injured. He had received a few scratches himself. He broke off from his men as he rode towards the palace, wanting to see Lyja, get her to patch him up.He passed the reins of his horse to a Thrall and walked inside, looking for a Volva.Seeing no one he continued up the stairs to Lyja’s room.Reaching the doorway he tapped on the wood and walked in.Asdis walked towards him shushing him before he said a word she pushed him telling him in a whisper to “Go outside”,he looked over her shoulder trying to see what was going on.He saw Inga and Hluda tending to an unconscious Lyja.He tried to barge past Asdis “What happened?”he asked, misjudging the Volva's strength “Outside!” she said again, pushing him back with ease. She finally got him to leave. “I want to see her”.Asdis blocked the door frame with her arm “No!,She needs to rest. She's been through a lot”.Ivarr stormed off, almost making it down the stairs before he turned back stomping into the room.He slowed when he realised how much noise he was making.Walking purposefully to a chair in the corner he sat down and crossed his arms, daring them to tell him to leave again.Asdis stared at him “Rat man” she said under her breath, earning herself a scowl from Ivarr. “You need to leave!” Asdis said in a loud whisper “This is Volur business!”, “That's my woman,I’m staying!”. “She's not “your” woman!”. Hluda looked between them not quite knowing what to do.Inga shushed them “What's happening?” Lyja said waking up“Look what you did!” Inga said “Go and fight outside the pair of you!”. Lyja was groggy “Ivarr? When did you get back?” He stood, walking over to the bed “Just now, what happened to you?“. “She needs to rest,” Inga said as she moved to block him. Lyja sat up clutching the blanket to her chest. “No,lay down,” Inga said, pushing her back gently. “I’m so hungry” Lyja said, swinging her bare legs off of the bed “No,no” Inga said “I feel fine” Lyja said as she tried to stand. “Lay down!” Ivarr said sternly.Everyone looked at him in varying degrees of offence “Alright, but not because you told me to”.
“You can leave us” Lyja said to her Sisters and Hluda “It's alright” she reassured them, watching as they left the room reluctantly.Lyja patted the bed next to her, inviting Ivarr to come sit with her. “Are you sick?” he asked when he had settled down, laying on the bed beside her.Lyja almost lied and said yes but thought better of it as she looked into his eyes “No,I'm not sick”.Ivarr lunged at her ”Good”.Lyja squealed as he pulled on top of him, making her laugh as he tickled her ribs “No! Please!” She giggled as she begged him to stop but he wouldn’t “Ivarr!” She scolded as she laughed, finally getting him to stop by giving him a firm bite on his neck.Ivarr hissed and rolled her over, the bite she gave him had gone straight to his cock, inflaming his already aroused passion.Lyja gasped as she felt him hard between her legs.He loomed above her as they stared at each other breathless. His eyes flicked to her lips as he slowly leaned in to claim them.Lyja tilted her chin, inviting him in.They both turned as they heard Una clear her throat, looking disapprovingly at them both “It's not what it looks like” Lyja explained as she cradled Ivarr’s hips between her bare thighs.
