Thiefiells expression darkened considerably. “You dare talk back to me?” His voice was soft, deadly.
Starr’s eyes narrowed, if she played this wrong this elf would kill her. But she would not stand having him touch her. “Amas, Shin, informed me that I can speak to no one without his permission.”
Thiefiell dredged through his memory. Amas was a title. Loosely it meant something along the lines of lord. “I assure you, you can speak to me.” He responded with a light squeeze of her chin.
“No. She may not.” Shin interjected as he braved a couple of steps in their direction. “And she’s breaking the rules I set in place earlier.” He cast a thunderous gaze at her. Could she not follow even simple directions?!
Thiefiell glared at Shin, angry about the younger elf’s response. “Your rules do not supercede mine, boy.”
The guards in the room prepared themselves for the task of killing Shin, unsheathing their weapons. Noticing this, Starr took the momentary distraction as an opportunity to pull free of the hand that gripped her chin. Stumbling back, she barely regained her footing before she felt Shin’s hand on her upper arm, snatching her away from Thiefiell and pushing her behind him.
Starr purposely allowed herself to hit the hard stone floor and gave a convincing yelp of pained surprise. Pulling herself into a more penitent position, she made sure that the scrapes on her palms left small streaks of blood on the floor. “Amas Shin, forgive me.” She bit down on her lip so hard in angered frustration she tasted blood. If she ever managed to get away from this vile prison Shin would die most painfully…
Thiefiell wasn’t fooled in the least. The elf prostrating herself at their feet wasn’t doing so because she had discovered her place among them. No, she was doing it in an effort to spare her own worthless existence. And if she weren’t properly handled she’d kill Shin later.
That thought stayed his hand.
Shin was a problem in his own right. Espousing beliefs that the light elves were no different than them, he was a thorn in Thiefiells side. If he were to die at the hand of a ‘slave’, it would go a long way to convincing some of the holdouts that the light elves were in fact a threat and needed to be annilahated.
Uttering a curse, Thiefiell glared at Shin. “Next time you bring a slave to me, ensure that you have proper control over it. I will not be so lenient next time.” With a curt gesture towards the exit, he barked out. “Dismissed!”
Wasting no time, Shin turned around and snatched her up by her forearm, brusquely leading her out of the temple. Past the guards, through the stone doors, and down the steps they went swiftly. He caught Nathavin’s gaze with a meaningful one of his own.
As the pair swept past them in tense silence, Nathavin and Aleyel followed.
Once back in the quarters they’d previously left, Starr wrenched her wrist from Shin’s hand. “Let go!” She snarled viciously before turning to Aleyel. Spying the cloak, she moved to snatch it away from the dark elven woman.
“Nathavin, Aleyel, leave us.” Shin uttered lowly in dark elvish. Enough was enough.
Hearing his tone, Aleyel cast a dark look at the elven woman. “What have you done?” She snapped out coldly. Shin could’ve been an ally to her, but it appeared that she’d wanted none of it. “You only had to play the part convincingly for a short while.”
Feeling Nathavin’s hand on her elbow, Aleyel turned and walked out of the room with him. “He must address this on his own.” Nathavin informed her lowly. He hoped Shin knew what he was doing.
As the other two dark elves exited the room, Starr turned her attention back on the troublesome assassin who’d taken her from her homeland. She cursed her lack of a weapon. One on one, she might’ve had a chance against him.
Shin paced around the room slowly, gauging her movements as she matched his steps, keeping distance between them. “I specifically told you to do and say nothing.” He hissed, allowing his temper to rise fractionally.
“He touched me!” She snapped back.
“Which you would’ve known about had you actually listened to what we were preparing you for!” Shin countered swiftly.
“I wasn’t going to let him touch me!” Her voice conveyed just how vile she thought the action was.
“He could’ve killed you for that! He should’ve killed you for that!” Shin retorted angrily. “Do you realize that he now expects me to punish you?!”
Her steps faltered somewhat.
Shin’s gaze narrowed even further. “I see that you didn’t consider that possibility.” He snorted, that was hardly surprising to him.
Unwisely, Starr spoke, doubling down on her previous statement. “As long as I don’t have to suffer his touch, punishment doesn’t scare me.”
Shin glared at her. What did he do now? She’d just effectively said that she wasn’t afraid of him. And wouldn’t be afraid of anything he could potentially do to her. Hurting her was out of the question, no matter how angry he was.
So how did he handle this?
Deciding to take some time to ponder this before acting, he growled lowly. “You will stay here until I return.” Swiftly, he left the room.
“Bring me some decent clothing when you come back!” Starr hollered angrily as the door swung shut with a decisive thud.
Shin stalked through the halls and soon found himself outside. It was raining heavily and lightning arced across the night sky. Without thought, he broke into a run.
Running aimlessly through the dark forest, Shin wondered what to do about her. Simply ignoring her was tempting, but not practical. Handing her to another dark elf was practically a death sentence for her. Nathavin was the only one of his kind that he trusted, but even Nathavin had his limits.
Leaving her in a human settlement was another option. They would treat her reasonably. Giran perhaps? Or maybe Aden? Each had a large human population. However, the more he thought of it, the more he hated it. Humans were greedy. She was likely going to be one of the very last light elves in existence soon. Far too many humans with less than honorable intentions would be after her.
Reaching the edge of the swamp, he halted his run and gazed at the dismal surroundings. Barely winded, he eyed one of the hideous creatures that called the swamp home. Flicking his wrist, his dagger tumbled swiftly through the air briefly before piercing the creatures heart. Shin retrieved the dagger and started walking back to the village. Rain began falling heavily, soaking his armor.
He snorted to himself. She’d wanted better clothes, something ‘decent’. His thoughts turned to Aleyel and her penchant for mischief, and her fascination with all things leather. His agreement with Nathavin concerning Starr was that he could treat her however he wished in private.
She wanted decent clothing. ‘Decent’ was a very broad term, open to interpretation. His steps became quicker. “Oh min Lua, you’re not going to like this little game…” Punishment didn’t have to violent beatings. It could be something as simple as giving her a choice between clothing she didn’t fancy, or none at all. She could dress in clothing of Aleyel’s choice, both publicly and privately, or none what-so-ever.
And, starting tonight, he was done sleeping in the barracks.
Once back in the caverns, he located Aleyel and informed her of his plans. While she set off to give Starr her first new item of clothing, he set off to collect his belongings from the barracks.
