Riku’s back was sore when he awoke, and for a few moments he
simply lay facing the ceiling, waiting for the stiffness to ease. Despite how soft the rug was, it still wasn’t
a decent substitute for a real, soft bed. The fire reflecting off the mounds of treasure sent soft golden light
all the way to the ceiling, interspersed with spots of color from the thousands
of rubies, sapphires, emeralds, and other stones that decorated various
treasures or simply lay loose amongst the piles of gold.
Finally the boy stretched, and he wasn’t surprised to find
his hand brushing empty carpet next to him. Chuckling, he marveled that Sora had managed to wake up before him so
often; the boy was a notoriously late sleeper. As he sat up, stretching his arms over his head, Riku looked around
himself, soon spotting the expected note laying nearby, weighed down by a large
ruby. Lightly tossing the gem in his
hand like a ball, the silver-haired teenager scanned the note. It was surprisingly brief – only four words.
Ever been half
dolphin?
Riku blinked. What
sort of clue was that to go on? Half dolphin… Half dolphin… What sort of
place would I have to be half dolphin in?
Sitting cross-legged, he braced his elbow on his knee and rested his
chin in his palm. Okay… well, if I needed to be half dolphin, there’d have to be a lot of
water, right? And… Green eyes suddenly lit up. And a
half dolphin sounds a lot like a half fish.
A merman! Sora must mean
Atlantica! Pleased with himself for
figuring out, Riku stretched again and scratched the back of his head. Now… to figure out where the keyhole was.
…Fuck. As if he hadn’t had enough trouble trying to
find Sora. With a resigned sigh, Riku pushed himself to
his feet. Might as well start around
here first.
Most of the walls in the treasure room were blocked by
mounds of, well, treasure, so that made them poor candidates to hold a keyhole,
and the only wall that was blank was dominated by a large doorway. After a last glance around, Riku headed
through it to be confronted by a large, relatively barren round room. And there, directly across from him, was the
large, glowing keyhole.
Oh, you’re kidding
me. It’s going to be that easy? Almost afraid it was some sort of trick,
Riku trekked across the room and scrambled up the large stone steps to stand in
front of the keyhole. Hesitantly he
reached out, and his heart gave a happy little jump as, when his fingers
brushed the stone, a crack appeared along its edges, and it swung outward like
a massive door. And beyond… Riku blinked.
Beyond the door was what looked like a giant ocean, dominated by a huge,
glittering castle of coral, except everything was underwater, as though Riku
were staring into an aquarium. He bit
his lip. Sora, I hope you know what you’re doing… And with that, in he plunged.
At first, when he found himself surrounded by water on all
sides, with no apparent surface, Riku panicked, thrashing around in the water
and instinctively trying to call for help.
But a few seconds later he realized that when he drew in a breath, it was breath, and not water, he was
pulling into his lungs. That made him
stop, blinking in confusion, and then he grinned. Sora must have set something up with Donald
to leave magic waiting here, just to help Riku when he arrived.
Now that he had calmed down, he took a few moments to look
around properly marveling at the beauty and the sheer size of the place. That size
was going to be a problem. No matter how
strong his body was, he was going to get exhausted trying to search this place…
and that was when the words of Sora’s note rang out in his mind. Half dolphin.
Riku twisted around, and yes, there it was, right in front of his eyes –
his legs had become the thick, powerful tail of, not a dolphin, but a sleek,
strong blue shark. With a huge,
ear-to-ear grin, Riku whooped and did a backflip before kicking his powerful
tail. The movement sent him shooting
through the water, and it took him a few minutes to learn just how to control
his speed and direction. Figuring out how
to move in three dimensions certainly was a trip. He eventually managed the basics, though, and
decided it was high time he went out looking for his sneaky little boyfriend.
Atlantica was so beautiful, Riku found himself lingering
here and there, simply to gaze in wonder at his surroundings. In all his years living on an island,
surrounded by the ocean, he had never imagined it could be this stunning under
the surface. In fact, he had grown up
essentially taking the ocean for granted!
Finally, though, he managed to work his way through the reef until he
happened upon a decrepit looking shipwreck.
Curious, he flipped his tail, sending himself closer to explore.
Just as he was poking his head into a broken window to peer
inside, he heard a very familiar giggle.
Quickly he jerked his head out, looking from side to side, then up and
down. There, up in the vicinity of the
crow’s nest, was a familiar nest of brown hair and pair of ocean blue
eyes. Riku grinned, and Sora grinned
back, diving down from the mast to join the silver-haired merman. Like Riku, Sora was half sea creature, only
in the brunette’s case it looked like a bottlenose dolphin rather than a shark.
“Hey, you,” Sora purred, putting his arms around Riku’s neck
and cuddling up to him. Riku smiled,
happily returning the embrace and nuzzling Sora’s hair.
“Hi. I missed you.”
Sora beamed. “I
missed you too.”
Teasing his fingers along Sora’s back, Riku tilted his
head. “So… what are your plans for us
today?” To be honest, he was a little
curious as to what could be done when one’s… em… parts were… er… tucked away
like they were on sharks and dolphins.
He became even more curious when Sora blushed shyly.
“Oh, I-I was figuring we could just… um… play. You know… hang out and explore. And stuff.”
Now Riku had to grin.
Sora had probably realized the difficulties of these bodies, too, but
still, the idea of just being with
Sora with nothing sexual involved was… really, really nice. “That’s a great idea, Sora,” he murmured,
kissing Sora’s cheek.
Sora’s smile was so wide and sunny and innocently happy it made Riku fall in love all over
again. Delicately the older boy touched
his lover’s jaw, and the pair of them gazed at each other in silence for a few
moments. Then Sora’s eyes, the exact
shade of the ocean around them, glittered mischievously, and the teenager
flicked his tail, darting away from his companion and diving down towards the
tunnel that led back to the large Undersea Gorge. After a moment of once again figuring out the
mechanics of his tail and swimming underwater, Riku plunged down after him, and
the pair chased each other through and around the Gorge, heading back through
the tunnels and up the whirlpool that deposited them back at the Undersea
Trench. There they spent a while exploring
the various nooks and crannies, opening the massive blue, red, yellow, and
white clam shells that lay all around to try and discover any hidden
treasures. When the mollusks yielded
nothing, Sora suggested they return to the Gorge, where he could show Riku
Ariel’s grotto and its many knickknacks.
“Are you sure Ariel won’t mind?” Riku asked.
Sora smiled. “Yeah.
She said I could use it whenever I wanted if I ever came back to
Atlantica.” Without waiting for an
answer, he then grabbed Riku’s hand and dragged him back down. It took a few minutes – even to Sora the
tunnels of Atlantica were still confusing – but they eventually managed to find
the correct passage that led back to the gorge.
Ariel’s grotto was tucked in a small cave at one end of the
gorge, its entrance hidden behind a large boulder. At first Riku moved to help Sora heave it
aside, but the younger boy just grinned and shook his head, setting his
shoulder to the rock and giving just a light shove. The stone rolled easily along a groove, and
Riku raised his eyebrows. It made Sora
laugh. “Well, how else did you expect
Ariel to get in while I wasn’t here?” In
response, Riku just grinned and shrugged, and the two boys swam inside.
The cavern was roughly bell-shaped and layered with tiers of
shelves stuffed full of dozens and dozens of objects that would have seemed
commonplace to a land-dweller but must be new and strange to someone living
under the sea. Sora settled himself on
the small point of rock in the center of the floor, watching with amused eyes
as Riku circled up and up, picking up a music box here and a toy horse there. For a while he settled on a wooden box
crammed with springs, forks, jewelry, and other trinkets that seemed to have
nothing to do with each other. His eyes
settled on a lovely opal pendant strung on a golden chain, and he plucked it
out of the box, holding it up to watch how the colors changed as the pendant
rotated in the light. Surely Ariel
wouldn’t miss one tiny piece, would she…?
Riku fingered the necklace for a short while longer before finally
flipping his tail and swimming back down to his waiting boyfriend. Looking only a little sheepish – and ignoring
the look Sora gave him – he offered the bauble.
Sora gently took the stone, obviously admiring it, but still
looking dubious. “Riku…” he said,
admonishing just a bit. Riku pressed the
opal into the brunette’s hands.
“She won’t miss it,” he assured the blue-eyed boy. “Don’t
you like it?”
“Of course I do,” Sora replied, “but…” Then he looked down at the trinket again,
sighed, and shook his head as he slipped it around his neck. “I’m getting as bad as you.” Riku grinned.
When the pair were finally ready to settle down for the
night, Sora insisted on taking Riku to Triton’s palace, where they were greeted
warmly and served a sumptuous meal before being shown to one of the lavish
guest rooms. As the two curled up
together on the huge clam shell bed and stared up at the open ceiling, Riku
wondered aloud, “What do you think’s up above the surface of the water?”
Sora rolled over so his head was pillowed in the hollow of
Riku’s shoulder, and he could follow the aqua-eyed boy’s gaze with his own.
“Don’t know,” he answered. “Is there
a surface? Maybe the water just goes on and on forever.”
Riku looked thoughtful.
“I guess that’d make sense.
Mermaids don’t need a surface or land or anything like that.”
After this brief exchange, the teenagers fell silent again,
and eventually they both drifted off to sleep. And Ariel never did notice the missing opal necklace.
