He'd
said he would give up his life if it would bring back Akzeriuth, and he'd meant
it. If Asch had told him what Van was planning Luke would have refused to
believe him.
They hadn't wanted him, all along, none of them did. He'd had his heart broken
over and over by the people trying to break through him to find Asch. Only Van
hadn't done that, so Van was the only one it was safe to love. The only one worth striving for, the only one who believed in him,
and scolded because he expected better but not the impossible.
He hadn't expected Luke to be Asch because he had known Luke was only 'foolish
replica Luke.'
The only reason he'd had to live, his creator, his father, had created him to
die. Of course he would have refused to recognize that, been in denial. Because
if Van didn't care, then... Then what?
There was no one to trust. Even Guy had turned away.
This horrible power, this power of destruction... wasn't only that. It had
taken him away from the manor. Lorelei's power was over time. So... it had been
a gamble, but he hadn't really cared.
He did care about his own broken heart, though.
He, he deserved to suffer, but this Luke was still an innocent, and he would
stay that way. None of the others had mended his broken heart. He'd pieced
himself back together, as he had so many times, and gone on, and now he could
help this other self do the same.
They'd learned that they could trust no one, not even Master Van in the end.
And so they would trust no one but themselves, but they could trust in themselves,
because to betray this Luke would be to betray himself and he'd had enough
betrayal.
Fragments of each other's broken souls, as they were a
fragment of Lorelei's.
"It's going to be alright." He didn't know how to do this except the
way he'd been to Ion, treating him the way he had wanted to be treated.
"He, Master Van, he..."
"I know." That didn't make it better. "I know."
"It wasn't your fault. He hypnotized you. Us."
They couldn't forgive themselves because they didn't trust their own judgement. But they could trust each other. "What are
we going to do?"
"We're not bound by the Score since we're replicas."
"Ion, we have to save Ion." Poor Ion, betrayed by
Anise as they had been by their own guardian. "And all those
people. We could... Your hair is shorter than mine, and we look adult. Maybe we
could pretend to be a family?"
"There are enough tourists in Keterberg that no one really pays attention
to them. And I brought money, and items. We could even have our own
house."
Their own place, not a prison but a refuge.
His younger self was already clinging to him for comfort, but now it was
affection. Really? He would be taken care of, he would
be taught the hard-earned lessons, he would be
understood? The kiss was impulse.
They
didn't know how to do this, but they knew what they had always wanted, and they
were '17' and had gotten the talk. If they'd known more there might have been
something approximating shame, or perhaps defiance instead. The world didn't
care about them, so why should they care about what it thought about
seven-year-old male identical twins? The world didn't love them, so why should
they love anyone else?
Before Akzeriuth, Luke had wanted to help. To prove himself.
To gain control over his life. Afterwards, he'd wanted
to apologize, to Asch, to the world. To give someone else control over his
life, because he couldn't be trusted with it.
So it wasn't at all strange to them that the somewhat younger and far weaker
would dominate. It was what they wanted, after all, and that was what mattered.
A warm body, more or less muscled but still their own, and familiar, and safe. Held and treasured and loved and forgiven or forgiving.
It might not qualify as sex, but it was sliding against each other, warm and
wet and knowing fingers and hearing their own voice gasp and knowing they had
made themselves happy when they craved happiness. Knowing that the younger
could be saved and the older redeemed, proving it again and again until they
started to believe it.
The younger's absolute devotion had a worthy recipient,
and the elder had someone who trusted him, someone he could save. The link
between isofons that Asch had abused didn't hurt when there was no hatred to
pain, so they knew everything the other did, could move their hands as
their own until everything started to blur.
Asch had said that he felt his mind blurring, one remembered, and it was
probably Lorelei.
If we're manifestations we don't want to absorb each other. The contamination effect, like the jewel and the sword.
But what if we want to be one? Keep the other safe inside their heart.
But then who will hold us? I want to touch you, and I don't want to trust
anyone else's teeth where yours are.
You're right. They pulled apart reluctantly, but not very far at all. Oh,
dammit.
What? Hair falling around his face, the younger pouted, peeved at the
interruption.
Asch.
"Dammit." If they didn't go to Akzeriuth
their original, bound by the Score, would. Plus there was the whole possession
thing: that would let Van know where they were. It wasn't that everything had
been fine before Asch showed up, but Asch was the reason for everything
horrible they had gone through: a family that wasn't theirs, an atrocity that
wasn't theirs, Van cared about Asch instead of them...
The older felt guilt. The younger had the outside perspective to look at those
thoughts and feelings and realize he was being an idiot.
Asch was not going to interfere with their happiness.
