Here it is. The last chapter. Hope you’re ready.
My thanks go out to moonlock for reviewing, and I have some good news for you. I do have a story about when they first met. Actually, I have several individual one-shots that will explain a bit about how this story came to be. I’ll be posting those after I edit them, so expect them in a couple weeks time.
Chp 8
Hours passed and Cole floated in and out of consciousness. He had been sleeping so much he should have been rested, but his body still felt drained. It was like playing catch-up, except he never once caught up.
“Cole.”
“Hm?” The noise was muffled against Alex’s chest.
“My leg is asleep.”
Cole didn’t know Alex’s limbs could fall asleep, but then again he had been compressing the main artery in one of his legs for several hours now. He muttered an apology and moved to the vacant side of the bed. Now was as good a time as any and Cole stood on stubborn legs and padded to the bathroom to relieve himself.
Alex glared at his leg for ruining his quiet time. The intense tingling sensation of blood returning to the limb lasted the barest of moments. His body, advanced and adaptable as it was, still suffered an occasional body part falling asleep. It was a tiny reminder that the form he kept by default had vulnerabilities. He could heal injuries sustained from those vulnerabilities, but nothing stopped his ‘normal’ flesh from tearing or his body from morphing.
Cole returned and crawled under the covers. He was immediately bombarded by Alex’s insistence on being in direct physical contact with him. They shared some kisses that Cole instigated in order to help Alex settle. Relaxing together was a simple gesture, but it meant everything at this point.
“Hey,” Cole ran his fingers through Alex’s hair, “know what’s funny?”
“What?”
“You’re the bitch in this relationship.”
Alex may have been offended and given Cole a solid punch to the ribs for that one, except it was said so bluntly, so honestly, and held such humor he instead scoffed, amused.
Happy Cole was enjoying the moment, Alex tucked himself up under his chin and shamelessly cuddled.
~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`This was it. Cole felt the storm approaching. It was the storm that would be the greatest challenge of his life. The pit of his stomach was tense, but outwardly he felt relaxed. Resigned, almost, to the fact he might not live through his final confrontation with Kessler, Cole reflected on the past few weeks.
Trish had been a large part of his life. He loved her, and missed her. Now he had someone else who desired his partnership. Alex wasn’t the one he would have expected, but now that he was here Cole was thankful.
He stared down the length of Alex’s torso from his place behind him. The pillows had been hoarded into a wall behind him, and he leaned upright against them, sinking into their plush hides. Alex lie reclined against his chest, asleep. He had been lulled unconscious by the strong pulse of Cole’s heart.
He smoothed his palm over Alex’s forehead, brushing short dark bangs up and away from closed eyes. The face he revealed was lax, exuding tranquility that made him envious. He guided his gaze elsewhere, letting his sight glide with the centerline of Alex’s body. The line ended where the sheets began, just short of revealing personal areas. Cole smiled at the perfect belly button. His fingers traced around the scar given at birth, and flattened over the thin line of hair that stretched beneath the covers. That was all the body hair Alex really had – a tiny, fine trail that led from his lower belly to his genitals. His pubic hair was even amusingly tame.
Alex shifted, spine expanding as he stretched, and inhaled deeply. He let the breath go and emitted a soft noise when Cole pulled him in, kissing his temple, cheek, and neck with an intentional slowness. Alex closed his hand over the fingers traversing his belly and squeezed lightly.
He spoke, his voice heavy with sleep, “What’s bothering you?”
Cole leaned his head against Alex’s, “What makes you think something’s wrong?”
“I can feel it in your heartbeat and muscles. You’re worried about something. And underneath that you’re angry.”
Cole breathed in and out slowly, easing his mind, “I might not survive this.”
Alex’s eyes crept open, “Survive what?”
“Kessler.”
Alex remembered that name, and his defensive side flared, “I can kill him for you.”
“No.” Cole wrapped his arms around him tightly, “Even if it costs me everything, I’ll kill Kessler. For everything he’s done to me, to Empire City, and to Trish… He’s going to reap it all.”
Alex reached up and rubbed at the back of Cole’s neck and jaw, “If your life is in danger I’m not going to stand by and let you die.”
“Then go home.”
He tilted his head and looked up at Cole, but those strong eyes were closed, “Go home?”
“This is my problem. I’m going to face it, and I don’t want you involved.”
Alex rolled over and crawled to his hands and knees, nose-to-nose with Cole, “And what if you do die? I come back here and find what? Your corpse?” A bittersweet smile curved Cole’s lips and he met Alex’s harsh gaze.
“Alex.” Cole pressed a quick kiss to unresponsive lips, “I don’t have unlimited power. I can’t promise-”
“Then let me help you.”
“This isn’t your home or responsibility. I want you to leave Empire City until this is over.”
“What if I don’t? What if I stay and hunt Kessler down and kill him?”
“I’d be angry with you.”
Alex huffed, “I think I can handle that.”
“I’d be very angry with you. I may never forgive you.”
“That just means we’d have a lot of angry sex. Doesn’t sound so bad to me.”
Cole exhaled, smiling a real smile this time, “Alright, listen to me. I promise I won’t die, as long as you promise to leave the city and let me do this myself.”
Alex’s eyes fell shut and he pressed his forehead to Cole’s, “And what if you do die?”
“Then you can hunt down Kessler and do whatever you want to him. Torture him, tear him limb from limb. Consume him. It’s up to you.” Alex locked his mouth with Cole’s. The connection was heated, filled with every kind of emotion Cole had felt for the past three weeks. Anger, fear, concern, lust, and others mingled together, making the expression all the more meaningful. Cole turned his head, cradling Alex’s face with his palm, and skimmed his fingers back to tangle in dark hair for a controlling grip. He pushed and pulled Alex to his will, making him fight to continue the kiss. Their bond was severed when Cole finally needed a breather.
Alex swallowed and licked his lips, crawling forward as Cole eased the rest of his weight onto the pillows, “You better not die.” He meshed his lips against Cole’s to signify it was his turn, and then moved to his neck, brushing his face against the rough stubble of facial hair as he descended.
Cole sighed, massaging the back of Alex’s neck, “I won’t.”
Alex nuzzled and ran his hands over the contours of Cole’s body. He was angry at the request for his departure, and part of him so badly wanted to go against it, but at the same time he believed in Cole. The man had still been familiarizing himself with his powers when they’d met. He could have killed him with little extra effort at the time, but Cole had grown and learned. He was stronger, much stronger, and it was apparent in not only how he fought, but also when they had sex. The changes their relationship had gone through had been swift, and even Alex hadn’t predicted the current outcome.
The attentions continued, and it wasn’t long before Cole knew where they were headed. He let Alex take command, even though he still tended to control their pace whether dominant or submissive.
He firmed his fingers against the skin below the curve of Alex’s ass, pulling him on top. This would be the last time he had this closeness to Alex for some time. That knowledge made him willing to give him free reign.
Inside, Cole steeled his resolve to defeat Kessler.
~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`Alex had waited weeks before he returned to Empire City. Now among the buildings, he felt the absence of power-crazed monsters ruling the city, and could see the people had regained hope.
Whatever Cole had done left the city free and full of energy to start over. A sea breeze whipped his clothing as he scanned rooftops and alleys from his vantage point. He tested the air with his nose, trying to pick out scents. He was searching for the familiar tang of skin and electricity. His heart buzzed, aching, and his brow furrowed.
He didn’t like missing Cole. It made him feel weak, and such feelings led to bouts of anger. He should never have allowed himself to become so attached, but now that he had it was a pointless circle of irritation. He closed his eyes and inhaled deeply and picked out dozens of human smells mixed with the thick blanket of city smog.
Where was Cole?
Alex dashed, a blur of black, and raced across the Historic District, over the water and into the Neon. It was a brief minute later and he was on top of Zeke’s roof. There was no Zeke, but more importantly there was no Cole. He picked up a lingering scent. It was Cole’s, but to his disappointment it was faint. Perhaps Cole had been here days, maybe even a week before, but he was gone now.
Alex’s heart thrummed with his discovery. Cole had lived, and while he was no longer in Empire City, he had to have been somewhere. He looked to the ocean and narrowed his eyes against a sharp breeze. It didn’t matter where Cole had gone.
He would find him.
1.1.11~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`I’m such a nerd, that when I went back through and read this for editing’s sake, my brain added dramatic music at the end from the last scene in Infamous right when Cole finishes saying, “I’ll be ready.” (When you finish as a hero.)I’m contemplating writing a short one-chapter story that takes place after this, but so far it’s just an idea in my head. We’ll see. Also, I do love and appreciate reviews. Any constructive criticism is great as well (fantastic, actually). I’m looking for ways to improve, so if there is any advice you have for me, feel free to drop a review. Thanks for reading, and I hope you all enjoyed it.While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
