Chapter Seven; Settling In
Vector was sprawled over the couch later that evening, so Espio took this time to look at their new bedroom. He was hoping to look at it alone, but Joe was sitting on the bed in a meditating position by the time Espio had opened the door to it. “Heh, this used to be my bedroom, you know.” He seethed, albeit in high spirits. “Dingodile always made a point of sorting out rooms by size, so you two shrimps get this bedroom, and I move in with Dingodile in his bedroom. He's actually had it for years, it's a miracle it wasn't smashed in the fall.” Joe picked up a magazine off the bed and began to read it intently. “You're going to miss this room a lot, aren't you?” Espio tried to stir some excitement into the room, the atmosphere was currently dead with emptiness. “having to leave so many memories must be hard” “ Don't be stupid, Espio, I haven't known this room for that long at all. I was, on the other, a witness to the creation to Dingodile. You should have seen it. The scientists came together and said 'okay, so we'll programme this beast to have no feelings of love or compassion and let it loose on all the cute and cuddly things in the Ice Age'. Obviously, I was the first to see how a heartless, compassionless killing machine could easily turn on them, but did they listen to me? Oh no, they reckoned they knew better so now they have a creature which has no idea how to care for anything but gluttony and greed!” Joe shuffled back to his magazine in a satisfied smugness over Espio's supposed naivety. But before Espio left to explore the other rooms, he simply enquired “Oh, hey Joe, I have a question about that origin story.” “Go on...” replied Joe, annoyed at Espio's persistence. “If Dingodile's a heartless monster who only cares for gluttony and greed, how come he likes you enough to have a special pet name for you?”
Espio now was sat in the basement, thinking about what happened last night. In reality, it has only been a day since he was in those dark alleys, using trash cans a meditating platforms. As such, it had only been that long since he'd nearly masturbated to the thought of Vector. It had creeped him out back then, and this morning, but now he wasn't so sure. He felt his boner come back to his lower regions, but this time had free control over it. He decided that he'd think about it more tomorrow, he'd been through so much that day he really just needed some rest. When he got back to his bedroom, he saw that Joe was gone. Joe was in the swamps, thinking much the same things as Espio. “I never realised my pet peeve was his pet affection before now....surely it's just a...” he whispered to himself, lingering on that thought when a new train of ideas hit him. “Maybe he wants to take it all the way. Oh God, I don't like him that!” he became anxious, before suddenly feeling a different sensation. “Huh? Is that...it's so erect, it wants to come out! Do I...do I want to take it all the way, then?”
The next midday, it was the turn of the crocodiles to do some reflection. Espio and Joe had gone out to purchase some lunch, and Vector and Dingodile were left all alone. “Heh, y'seen this paper, Vector?” Dingodile called over the small reading table to Vector. “Is something in it I should be interested in?” Vector snarkily replied. He did see, when he glanced over, an article about Amy's strange living arrangements due to there being eleven people to accommodate. Lined along the side of the page was an interview with Coco and Tails, the latter of whom claimed that everyone needed to stay together a while longer as they were getting closer to figuring the whole thing out and making amends, but it wasn't going to happen in the foreseeable future. “Truth be told” Dingodile murmured to Vector, “I'm not sure how much longer Joe would be able to stand me. Maybe he'll go a little further with his scimitar and end up shoving it in my ass.” Vector patted his new friend on the back assuringly, knocking the paper out of his hands. “Relax, I've seen Joe's face in response to your namings, he looked like he adored them!” Dingodile looked at him, unconvinced. “Vector, that's not the face of an adorer. That's the face of someone who wants you to shut the fuck up.” Dingodile laughed, but Vector wasn't buying it. “Are you sure? Because if he was so intent on going, wouldn't he have left you for dead long before now?” Dingodile still looked unconvinced as he left the room to claim his brandy from the kitchen.
Pouring a little of the alcohol into a dirty glass, Dingodile leaned over the sink counter as be took small sips from it. The thought of being hated by Joe, as much as he loathed to admit it, was the most depressing notion he could think of. Vector wasn't helping with that, he was sure of it. 'Well, maybe he does care, a little' Dingodile racked his head to come up with some possible scenarios. 'He'd 'ave to if he wanted to maximise his capabilities for manipulation, to give him a better chance of stealin' away his prize along the line'. He also wondered how Vector could be so sure of his own place in life, and know that Espio would be his loyal little employee through thick and thin. Vector, picking up the paper, reading the small article again before burying his forehead into it in anguish, wasn't so sure. To him, it was a fight to stay on Espio's good side, one he sometimes felt he was achingly close to losing. Perhaps he was being too restrictive on Espio, not letting him have some breather time outside of meditation...That's when he had an idea. “Hey Dingodile, how about we go out for a drink tonight?” Dingodile stopped sipping from the glass and lifted his head up in suspicion. “Oh, and what makes yer so eager to get pissed so abruptly, mate?” Vector slammed his boisterous hand on Dingodile's upper jaw to shut out the shifty remarks. “Hey, there ain't anything to it. We just go out tonight, have a round, then comeback in the mornin'. Don't you see? It'll give the lizards a little room to mingle, put us back into their favour!” Rubbing the pained area where his jaw had been hit, he conceded to Vector's point, but not with a pinch of pessimism. “Sure, I'll go with ya to town, but I called yer on there bein' an ulterior motive behind it, y'know”.
