The wind swept through the empty alleyway, piercing the silence with its mournful wail. It moved fluidly between the buildings, sending a loose piece of debris flying. The flimsy piece of cloth spun violently in the air, carried several feet by the wind’s power. As the howls subsided, the cloth floated slowly on its back, landing without a sound on the hardened cobblestones. The alley was silent once more. The cloth moved. But the wind was resting. Barely a sound entered the abandoned alleyway a rift in reality opened up. It looks like an oval tilted on one side, but its shape didn’t change no matter how you looked at it. Beyond the space was darkness. The tear remained stationary for several minutes. A leg appeared. It stepped quickly out of the rift, as if desperate to escape the world beyond. The man that came out wore a dirty, tattered robe that once could have been defined as regal. The rest of his body looked just as worse for wear. His hair was matted and filthy, as if he hadn’t bathed in ages. As soon as he exited the tear, it snapped shut. The man looked around, turning to gaze at the spot where the rift had closed. “You can’t get away from me Tylron.” The man didn’t react to the voice from the other end of the alleyway. He turned slowly, showing no hint of surprise, but his eyes shifted uncertainly. “Stop following me.” He said. His voice was low, but it held a note of finality. The newcomer didn’t acknowledge it. “No.” She said simply. Serenity stepped out of the shadows, into the faint moonlight that entered the alleyway. She was wearing her basic combat robes, obviously ready to fight if she had to. Tylron’s eyes narrowed, but he didn’t move. “This,” He said each word slowly, “is the last time I’ll warn you…” His eyes flickered once more. They seemed to change… Serenity took a step closer. “Send me back.” Tylron gazed at her for a moment. He had to admire her reckless courage. Shut up. Tylron flinched at the voice. She’s just a worthless human. She’s disposable. Tylron scowled, turning away from her. He opened another rift, stepping into it. He heard Serenity’s hooves clopping against the cobblestones, rushing to enter the rift as well. He snapped his fingers, sealing the tear. You’re starting to annoy me. Said the voice again. “Knock it off.” Tylron said, taking a few steps into the infinite blackness around him. No. This time, I’m ready… I don’t need you anymore. Tylron felt an agonizing pain flash through his body, as if fire had scorched every inch of his skin while he was freezing. Within a moment, the pain faded, but Tylron fell to his knees. He felt drained. Looking up, he spotted a ghastly version of himself. It smiled at him. “It’s time to end our little partnership.” It said, its voice hollow. “And I’ll have some fun while I do it…” Serenity stomped her hoof on the ground, immediately regretting it as pain shot up her leg. She willed herself to ignore it, crossing her arms. How am I going to follow him now? As if answering her question, another rift appeared. It seemed to be inviting her. She hesitated. He wouldn’t just let me follow after all that talk, would he? But…who’s to say this is his doing… Serenity steeled her will, jumping into the abyss. Serenity landed, but there was nothing to land on. She took a few steps back, stumbling over her on feet and falling on her behind. She was standing on nothing. Yet it was supporting her. There was nothing, nothing but darkness as far as she could see. The ground Was it actually ground? changed feelings constantly. At first, she felt like she had been standing on cloth, but it soon became needles, then brittle stone. She stood up uncertainly, and while the ground constantly changed feelings, it never changed from the flat surface she arrived on. She looked up, a short gasp escaping her lips. What she saw she wasn’t expecting at all. Tylron was hovering several feet above ground-level, suspended it seemed by glowing purple rings. The rings were jagged and pulsating, as if they were alive. Tylron’s arms and legs were limply hanging down, his head rolled over onto his chest. In front of him was a ghostly figure, but Serenity couldn’t make out any other details from where she was. Strange ethereal tendrils leaked out of the being in all directions. One came directly towards her. She was about to dodge it, but the mist-like substance passed through her harmlessly. She eyed the ghastly figure with caution. She stepped forward slowly, taking in what she could. It seemed human enough. The figure’s arms were folded across its chest; It was wearing a robe that resembled Tylron’s, yet it wasn’t ripped or torn. In fact, it looked brand new. The figure’s hair also looked like Tylron’s, yet it was neatly trimmed and brushed. Serenity looked from the ghost to Tylron, confused. “I suppose you have a few questions.” The voice was coming from the ghostly figure, but it was deep and resounding, much like Tylron’s. The ethereal figure turned to face her. She was looking at Tylron. Or, what would have been Tylron had he cleaned up. The misty figure was grinning, a light-hearted warmth across his face. Serenity grimaced slightly; She got a strange vibe from this creature. Ghost-Tylron chuckled. “I’m sure you’ve figured it out by now. Or are you too caught up in your silly demands?” More tendrils of mist flowed out of his mouth when he spoke. The voice taunted her, strengthening her courage. She stood up straight, defiantly saying “I don’t care what’s going on, I want to go home!” Ghost-Tylron laughed and shook his head, looking down. “Ah… Silly Serenity…” He looked over his shoulder at the floating body. “So selfish… don’t you want to save him?” Serenity stared at the misty figure, dumbfounded. “Save him?!” She retorted angrily. “Why should I save him?! He brought me in here!” Ghost-Tylron raised his hand, wagging a finger at Serenity. “So quick to accuse… you’ve had fun in this world, is he really so bad?” Serenity hesitated. She did have fun, but… “No! Your mind tricks aren’t going to work, now send me back!” Ghost-Tylron frowned, turning around fully to face the floating Tylron. “Mind tricks?” He said slowly. “The only mind tricks here are the ones you’re creating for yourself. Tyler here didn’t do anything to you.” Serenity opened her mouth to protest, but paused, the full meaning of his words sinking in. “…Tyler? You mean…” The misty figure remained silent. “That little boy…” Ghost-Tylron turned around, nodding. His eyes were alight with excitement. “Yes. That little boy now floats before you, full grown. And completely innocent.” Serenity pursed her lips. “Innocent? He killed his family! How is that innocent??” Ghost-Tylron chuckled softly, looking up to nothing. “But you see, he didn’t kill his family.” “I did.” Serenity remained silent for several moments, not knowing what to say. She racked her brain, searching through the visions she saw. I do remember seeing a misty figure… is… this it? “What are you?” As much as she tried not to, her voice shook slightly with fear. The Ghost-Tylron grinned. “I am Shek’ron, demon of the void, a curse among mortals, the end of your world.” Serenity took a step back, beginning to realize her fear of this creature. His gentle facial expression was a polar opposite from the threats he issued. He continued on, ignoring her actions. “Though, as much as I hate to admit it, I need a mortal shell to do real damage in the world.” He turned back towards Tyler, leaving his back exposed. Thinking quickly, Serenity began to summon her magic as quietly as she could. “You see, I can only manifest in the world for a short time, not nearly enough to cause the damage I want. And I can’t manifest in your world at all. So, I would use a mortal as a shell, in which I can reside for a much longer time. But…” He sighed, looking at the ground. “Mortals are often weak, they couldn’t survive long with me inside. So I’d need to find one of immense magical capabilities, someone who could support me.” He raised his hand towards Serenity at an impossible angle, opening it just as the barrage of arcane missiles reached him. They vanished into his hand. “Clever girl.” He said without turning around. “For some reason, people don’t tend to attack the bad guy when they’re explaining their evil motives. You’re a step above them in intelligence, it seems. Not that attacking me will do any good…” Serenity gritted her teeth, sending every spell she knew the demon’s way. He almost ignored her, each spell fading into his being. “And to cause havoc in your world, I’d need a human of even more exceptional magic. You can see my dilemma here… very few humans possess enough magic to do one, let alone both.” Shek’ron sighed, dropping and shaking his head side to side. “And then I found Tyler. His magic was still immature, but it surpassed any hopes I had. I simply had to have him. It took quite a bit of effort, but I broke him to my-Arrgh!” Shek’ron winced, buckling over. He turned around to face Serenity, the first hints of danger in his eyes. “Don’t think you’ve broken through my defenses.” He grinned as Serenity’s look of achievement faded slightly. “I was getting carried away. If you want to fight, I will gladly oblige you. But wouldn’t you like to hear my story?” Serenity hesitated, the next arcane spell already in her palm. The waited a moment in silence. “Good.” Shek’ron said, nodding. “Now… I possessed this human’s body, robbing him of his free will. But, naturally, someone with that much power was able to fight me. It’s been a long struggle, one that has gone on until now.” Serenity gasped slightly, looking up at Tyler. “That’s right…” The demon’s voice sounded different. When Serenity’s gaze returned to him, she saw that he wasn’t a copy of Tyler anymore. He still looked like a humanoid, but strange protrusions jutted out of his body at various places. They seemed to be shards of a type of crystal, but Serenity couldn’t tell for sure. His eyes glowed bright white, illuminating the rest of his face. His wispy mouth was curved in a malicious grin, a complete change from the warm smile Tylron had. When he opened it to speak, nothing but white light could be seen inside. “I have won the battle between our spirits. I’m only keeping him around to drain the rest of his magic from him… and once I have, I can finally create the beautiful chaos I’ve longed for…” Serenity spoke uncertainly. “What…? Weren’t you already doing that?” The demon laughed. It sounded jagged and piercing, as if needles were digging into her skin. “Those meager tricks? No… Tyler would never allow me to destroy a town, but he couldn’t stop me completely. I could kill anyone, but he convinced me to spare them, on the pretense of making their lives spin. I admit, some projects of mine weren’t much of a success… Take your friend, for instance.” Serenity gasped, thinking of Quill. “That’s right.” Shek’ron said, waving his hand to the left. A bubble appeared, showing Quill and Kyli on a boat, resting happily in each other’s arms. “That fool actually found a reason to be here. And as much as I wanted to destroy his happiness, Tyler refused me. So I settled for trying again.” His gaze leveled on Serenity. The white light in his eyes appeared to be getting stronger. “And you have done everything I expected you to do… such wonderful confusion and pain... I drink it up.” Serenity tensed, forming another orb of magic in her hand. Shek’ron eyed it without fear. “Go ahead. Blast me with everything you’ve got. It won’t get you home.” She hesitated, wondering if she could attempt to reason with him. She thought back to the vision of the burning forest, the destroyed house, the boy crying over the family he murdered… There was no reasoning with this creature. She launched a string of her magic at him, the demon jumping out of the way. He spun in the air multiple times before landing without a sound. His eyes narrowed. “You can’t win.” He whispered, rolling to the left as she launched another string of magic at him. Serenity grinned, launching another at his crouched figure. He rolled directly into it, the arcane magic dancing over his body like fire. He made no sound, but when he stood up, his face was contorted with rage. “You’ll regret that.” The tendrils that were always streaming off of him suddenly zoomed back to him, forming a ball in his hand. He rammed his hand flat against the ground, the sphere disappearing. All at once, several purple rings shot out of the ground around Serenity. They were the same as the ones suspending Tyler in the air. Thinking quickly, she blinked out of the jagged prison. She appeared just in front of Shek’ron, his face a mix between anger and mild confusion. Serenity quickly summed her magic, arcane energy quickly expelled in all directions. Shek’ron was flung back, landing with a crash on his back. He lifted his head just in time to receive a fireball to his face. Serenity was just charging another spell when the demon vanished from sight. The magic faded in her hand as she looked around franticly, only able to see Tyler. A thought occurred to her. Shek’ron had asked if she wanted to save him… if she did, would he help her? It’s worth a shot. A frozen orb of magic appeared in her hand. She fired it towards Tyler, hoping it could break his bonds. Just before it made contact, it collided with a sphere of misty energy. Shek’ron stood below Tyler, another sphere already in his hand. He was smiling. “Clever girl.” He said. Serenity nodded, launching several missiles at the barrier. He, in turn, shot a few of his own to intercept them. But he wasn’t quick enough, and one set of missiles got through. They collided with the center ring. The ring pulsated and let off an erratic light. In an instant, it faded. Serenity smiled, ready to attack the barrier again when the air was ripped from her lungs. She was pushed back by an incredible force, landing several yards back. She sputtered, trying to get up and regain her breath when Shek’ron appeared above her, holding a sphere of magic. He held it above her face, cackling. Serenity triggered a spell, praying he wouldn’t kill her before it finished. “Goodnight…” He said softly as he raised his hand, intent on smashing it into her. His smile faded as she vanished from sight, his sphere fading harmlessly into the ground. Serenity leapt out from under Tylron just as his hand came down. He looked around curiously, Serenity sighing in relief that her invisibility spell had worked. She dashed around him, heading towards the barrier. She looked up, spotting the middle ring to be back. She mentally cursed her luck, and thought of what she could do. There were three rings, and she likely needed to destroy them all at the same time. She flexed her hand uncertainly, knowing the invisibility spell would break as soon as she tried to cast an offensive spell. She clenched her hand into a fist, looking up at the rings. It was time. Serenity channeled as much magic into her hand as she could, launching several missiles towards each ring. Her first sets made contact, the rings fading into black, but before the last missiles could complete their purpose, Shek’ron appeared between them and the ring, taking the missiles in his chest. He grunted, the first audible sign of injury. “So… you think you can win?” He said, his voice barely masking his rage. “Think you can stop me? No… not a chance… you want to go back? SO BE IT!!” Shek’ron waved his hand, a white circle opening behind Serenity. It seemed to suck her towards it, spiraling into the unknown. Serenity braced herself, trying to attack the last ring before it overtook her. She formed a small fireball in her hand, but it was sucked away by the vortex. She could hear Shek’ron laughing at her as she inched closer and closer to the rift. With every ounce of effort, she conjured a sphere of white magic, launching three missiles towards the ring. The last thing she saw before getting sucked into it was the missiles making contact with the ring, Shek’ron’s furious expression… Shek’ron cursed as Tyler fell to the ground, sputtering. Muttering in demonic tongue, he melded into the human’s body, already preparing for his next chance…
