The final chapter, with no sex. I don't like doing a sexless chapter with no warning. Enjoy!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It took us much longer than it should have to find that tracking beacon. I would have left it there, if not for something that Tharan had said about it. It wasn't republic issue. In fact, he said that it was quite clearly off the black market. He was able to reverse engineer it and point me to the person who had planted it - or at least the one who was tracking me now. He was on Tython - no doubt he had followed me here. As Alari made her way through the residential district in the dead of night, she very quickly noticed one of the homes was guarded by two republic soldiers. She looked at her handheld tracker. There was no mistaking it - that was where the signal was being transmitted. She considered her options, ducking into an alley. I wasn't about to murder two guards who probably didn't even know who they were guarding or why. Letting them see my face wasn't going to end well for me either. It was only three hours until dawn. That didn't give me much time before shift changes. She walked through the alley, coming out on the other side of the man's home. They hadn't bothered to put guards there, as there was only entrance. She closed her eyes, and extended both arms to her sides. She brought them forward with a clap, pulling the guards toward the middle and knocking their heads together. They crumpled on the doorstep, and Alari quickly rushed forward to check that they hadn't been badly hurt. After verifying that they would be fine, she placed her hand over the door knob. Telekinetic energy flowed through the mechanism and set the tumblers, unlocking the door. She walked in, glancing around for a moment before picking a likely door for the bedroom. He was sleeping when she entered, and she took a seat next to the bed. With a flick of her wrist, she flipped him off of the bed and to the floor. He woke up with a start upon hitting the floor, groggy and disoriented. "What the- who's there?" "I think you know exactly who I am," Alari replied, "But who are you?" He got up and peered over the edge of the bed before standing. "You… you're that jedi chick." "I don't believe anyone has ever called me that, but I suppose it's an accurate enough description. I found your tracking beacon. How long have you been following me?" "Since you got your lightsaber. The tracking beacon is new." "Why?" she asked, more of a demand than a request. "It was just a job. You think I really care what you do?" "Who hired you?" "They'd kill me if I told you!" She pushed air forward with one hand, forcing him roughly against the wall with the force. He struggled to breathe, and she stood, walking slowly and deliberately toward him. "You're protected here, but not from me. I'm not an unreasonable woman - no one has to die tonight, as long as you tell me who I should kill." "You got in…" he croaked, "They could get in too." "Who?" she replied through gritted teeth. "A… sith… I can't… breathe…" "Give. Me. A. Name." "You'd… kill me…" "I'll kill you right now if you don't talk. Out with it." "Lord… Tyreal… first… then…" The man's eyes widened. His lungs were empty, and he couldn't draw breath with the pressure on his chest. He kept trying to speak, but failed. After a moment, Alari dropped him. He crumpled to the floor, coughing and sputtering. "Who is Tyreal?" "You mean… you don't know?" He looked up at her. "You killed him, here on Tython." Alari's eyes widened. Her palms began to sweat, and she felt pins and needles all over her skin. She began to shake, and bared her teeth. Thrusting one hand forward, she warped the force and gripped him by the neck with it, raising him off his feet and pinning him to the wall. Her voice was shaky when she spoke, overcome with rage. "Do you have any idea… how many people you killed? So many deaths could have been avoided if you had just kept your mouth shut!" He tried to speak, but could barely manage to gurgle and hiss. He clawed at his throat, trying to remove what was choking him, but couldn't grasp anything. There was a popping of cartilage, and his limbs went stiff before hanging lifeless. She dropped him and looked fearfully at her hands. Her entire body was in a cold sweat as she ran out, ducking into an alley and fleeing the residential area. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I was wrong, before. It was arrogance to think that a fall from grace would happen all at once, that I would know it before it happened. What Nadia saved me from that day was no invasion of the dark side, no forcible possession by some horrible power. No, that could never happen; that's not how it works at all. She saved me from myself. Alari had exited her ship, and was walking down the corridor from the hangar, when she spotted three jedi coming to meet her head-on. She recognized Satele immediately - she was leading the group. The other two took her a moment, but they were also from the jedi council. Just as before, the two stopped a few feet from each other. "The last time you approached me this way," Alari said softly, "You attacked me." "You're going to have to come with us, Alari." Satele replied sternly. "I hope you plan to elaborate." "Don't play dumb. You know full well why we're here. You can't just murder a man with the force and expect no one to find out." "In a rather short timespan, he has been responsible for many deaths. First, the four jedi on Tython that were killed when the imperial slave traders landed. You look surprised. Yes, the sith lord I killed hired him to watch me before you did. He must have quite a reputation as a tracker. Because of that… well, I don't think it would do well to tell you what happened. It would just put more people at risk." "You don't even deny killing him?" "Should I? The man was scum. I prevented him from getting others killed." "Alari… you have to come with us now. You're spiraling out of control." "No." "Alari…" Satele looked a little fearful this time. She licked her lips and took a shallow breath before continuing, "We can help you, but only if you let us." "I don't need help. I know exactly what I'm doing. Now get out of my way!" "You know I can't do that. Your ship has been put into automatic seventy-two hour lockdown. Even if you killed us all, you wouldn't be able to leave. It's over, Alari. There's no way out besides through us." "Then I suppose I'll just have to go through you!" Alari drew her lightsaber, pushing Satele back with force coalesced from her other hand. The three jedi drew their weapons as well, Satele brandishing a double bladed saber staff. Having to fend off four blades at once put Alari in a very bad position. Her three opponents were no slouches either. On her left, Syo ducked in quickly, forcing her to turn to defend with her lightsaber in her right hand. As they clashed, Oric propelled himself off the wall behind her, flanking her easily. She took the first counter that came to mind, a back kick to his sternum, but Satele was counting on that. She swept Alari's one leg out from under her, sending the redhead to the floor. Alari hit the ground on her back, twisting in mid air. As she fell, she struck the floor with the heel of her left palm, quaking the hallway and making the attackers lose their footing. It didn't give her much extra time, but it gave her enough. She flipped back up on to her feet, jumping away from the group. The more distance she could put between them, the better she would be able to fight back. However, they still had her trapped in between them and her own ship, and the space was getting smaller. Frantically gesturing with her free hand, she caused spikes and pillars of concrete to jut out from the walls, ceiling, and floor. The jedi were narrowly able to avoid them as they closed in, until one came up diagonally and caught Syo in the knee, forcing itself under the kneecap and incapacitating him. He stopped with a shout of pain, looking down at his leg with gritted teeth. The other two stopped and looked back at him. "Forget me!" Syo shouted, "It's up to you two now to stop Alari!" Satele had to duck and twist to avoid the next spike, coming from the ceiling and aimed squarely at her neck. Oric reached Alari first, and wasted no time in clashing with her. He was significantly stronger physically, and used that to his advantage, knocking her off balance with the first charge. Alari felt energy building up above her and ducked under Oric's lightsaber, running straight forward as fast as she could. The ceiling caved in, in the very localized area of where she had been standing. She twisted to avoid Satele's lightsaber as she ran past, and slashed at Syo with her own. It cut through his neck, but not enough to sever the head. Instead, he struggled to breathe, blood gushing out and down his robes, and collapsed. Alari had literal blood on her hands now, some having sprayed onto the side of her face as well. The noise of the collapsing ceiling had alerted Alari's crew, and Nadia rushed out first. She was mortified by what she saw. Alari and the two council members turned to see her. Satele put her hand out, palm facing Nadia. "Nadia, stay back!" Satele pleaded, "We don't want anyone else to get hurt!" "Too late for that!" Alari growled, charging at Satele. The two clashed lightsabers, Satele twirling and alternately striking with different blades to force Alari on the defensive. Oric tried to flank Alari again, running at her side. He was forced to slow down, dodging and batting away repeated telekinetic attacks. Alari was walking backwards to be able to defend herself, glancing back and forth between the two jedi. "Master, please!" Nadia shouted over the noise of battle. "Stop this!" Soon, Alari achieved what she was really aiming for. A section of the wall behind Oric gave, collapsing the ceiling on top of him and Satele. Oric was completely crushed, but Satele was merely hit with some debris at first. When she fell, more collapsed onto her legs, pinning her. She dropped her lightsaber, and it rolled away from her. Alari stopped it with her foot, and glared at the woman. Satele had blood running down her forehead, and a look of despair on her face. "Alari, don't do this!" Satele pleaded, "I beg of you! You're the republic's best hope!" "It's been done," Alari replied stoically, "You don't care about the republic, and you never did." "How can you say that? I've done everything I could to protect the republic, the jedi-" "And what about the innocent?" Alari shrieked. Her eyes were red, and tears streaked down her face. "What about everyone who died because you didn't want to be hasty? You're afraid of the dark side? What the hell does it matter what side of the force you draw from?" Alari brought her lightsaber down with both hands, forcing it through Satele's back and out the other side. Satele's eyes widened, and she coughed up a significant amount of blood before going limp. As Alari withdrew her blade and sheathed it, Nadia drew her own, charging at Alari. Alari responded with a mere flick of her wrist, lifting Nadia off her feet and slamming her into the nearest wall. Rebar snaked out, making the wall crumble in places. The steel wrapped itself around Nadia's arms and legs, holding her firmly in place and out of reach of her lightsaber. She thrashed and screamed like a wild animal trying to free herself. "How could you?" Nadia demanded, crying as well, "How could you do this? I trusted you! I believed in you!" Alari walked calmly over to Nadia and touched her face, wiping away tears. "I'm so sorry, Nadia." Alari shook her head, "Don't worry, apprentice. I could never bring myself to kill you." Suddenly aware of others in her peripheral vision, Alari glanced over to her right. In the exit of her ship, she saw Iresso staring silently. "You, on the other hand…" Alari motioned with one hand, and Iresso was yanked through the air toward her. She cut off his flight with a punch to the stomach, the combined impact of the colliding forces doubling him over and sending him to his hands and knees. She drew her lightsaber and stood over him as he coughed and sputtered for air. "You lied about Seela. That bad information cost a lot of people their lives." She swung her blade and cut him down, causing Nadia to scream and strain against the metal. "No! Why are you doing this?" Alari turned back to Nadia, leaning in close enough for the two women to touch foreheads. "Promise me something, Nadia. When you become strong enough-" "No, no, no…" Nadia sobbed, shaking her head. "You must find me and kill me. I will never stop killing people who get in my way, and after this, many good people will be sent to their deaths at my hands. That's why I need you to do this." Nadia refused to look Alari in the eye, or respond in any way. The redhead sheathed her lightsaber and walked away calmly. Nadia had completely lost the will to struggle against the metal, sobbing as she laid limp against the binding rebar. Near the end of the hall, Alari stopped and took out her holo communicator. She made a call, and Seela's image appeared shortly thereafter. "Baby," Alari sobbed, "I went and made a mess of things." "Alari, what's wrong?" Seela replied quickly. "I just killed three of the jedi council, and one of my crew." Seela hesitated to reply, taking a moment to process the information. "Okay, listen to me-" "No, they locked my ship down for 72 hours. I won't be able to get away from Tython. I'm so sorry." "Alari!" "I love you so much." "Alari, get ahold of yourself! I'm coming to get you! Just get away from the academy. Do you remember the landing pad where I was taken?" "Uh huh." "Get yourself there. I'm on my way right now." The call ended, and Alari heard a familiar voice behind her. "Herald." She turned, seeing Qyzen behind her. "Y-You can't stop me either." "Where you go, I go, Herald. That is Scorekeeper's will." "If you follow me, it will be the death of you." "Better to die fighting than to be captured alive." Alari nodded and began to walk again, Qyzen behind her. He added, eliciting a chuckle from Alari, "Jedi council, many points." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "I want this mission." Rebecca growled, glaring at the image of her general in her ship's holo communicator. "If anyone can end it without violence, it's me." "You can't end anything without violence!" the general retorted, "And besides, you can't get involved with this one, you know that." "If you send in anyone else, they'll be killed. The jedi council tried, and now they have some new job openings. Havoc squad has the best soldiers in the galaxy and you know that. Sending anyone weaker is a waste of time. Once she's off planet, you'll never see her again." "I know that," the general sighed, "But you know the republic's stance on family." "Bend the rules for me. Do you want her stopped or not?" "Fine. Do what you have to do. But if you can't stop her, there's going to be an investigation." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Seela ran toward Alari, embracing the human tightly for a moment before pulling back and looking up at her. "Everything's going to be okay. We're getting out of here." When they turned to the ship, they found Rebecca and Aric cutting off their escape. Seela's eyes narrowed, and she hissed in annoyance, "There's only one group in the republic military that could get behind me so quietly." "Havoc squad, at your service." Aric replied. Seela reached for her lightsaber, but Alari put out a hand to stop her. "No, wait. The human is my sister." "Then she'll understand that you need to flee." Seela said matter-of-factly. "Not a chance." Rebecca replied, "I'm here to take you in, Alari." Rebecca readied her assault cannon, and Seela drew her lightsaber. Alari drew her lightsaber as well and started walking toward Rebecca. "I must fight her alone," Alari said, "Qyzen, the other one is all yours. Darth Nox, watch our backs." Seela grimaced, but complied. A contingency of jedi was coming up over the hill, looking down from the cliff face. Alari wouldn't be able to fight Havoc squad while worrying about them. When Rebecca began firing, Alari broke into a run. The wind flowed around her, boosting her speed unnaturally. She skidded to a stop behind Rebecca. She would have caught anyone else off guard, but the woman knew her younger sister very well. Rebecca thrust the butt of her assault rifle behind her, catching Alari in the stomach hard. She turned, kicking an armored boot into the back of Alari's lower thigh, sending the jedi to the ground. Alari quickly rolled away and got back up, but she was already limping. Rebecca turned to face her again. Qyzen had to continuously chase after Aric to keep within melee range. Both combatants were able to keep up with each other expertly, dodging and weaving their attacks in fluid motions. Qyzen was watching his opponent's style, looking for patterns, for openings. What he found was a dangerous weakness, but he was willing to take the chance. He charged and stabbed his vibroblade through the plated armor on Aric's left shoulder. This left him open to a single shot, catching Qyzen in the lower left arm. Aric dropped his rifle, and Qyzen kicked him square in the chest, knocking him back into the rock face. "Did you forget telling me who Nox was?" Rebecca said, "Is that why you bothered using her alias this time?" "Right," Alari breathed, clutching her stomach, "We had that talk…" Alari thrust her hand forward, and a storm of debris flew toward Rebecca. The older woman calmly pressed a couple of buttons on her wrist, and an electromagnetic barrier surrounded her armor. The bits that did get through bounced harmlessly off her heavy armor. Alari ripped a chunk of the cement landing pad up out from under Rebecca's feet, making her stumble backward, then slammed it into her while she had poor footing. Rebecca flew back into the cliff face, and Alari brought a rock slide down on top of her, burying the heavily armored woman up to the neck. The older woman roared in anger, straining under the rocks. Alari limped slowly over to her sister and removed the commando's helmet. Rebecca's teeth were gritted, and she glared up at her younger sister. "Rebecca, I need you to promise me something before I leave." "Go to hell!" "You're going to issue a DNE on me. Then you're going to organize and lead a proper assassination contingency against me. I want you to give the final blow." Rebecca turned away and began sobbing bitterly. "Promise me!" "I swear to you on father's grave," Rebecca sobbed, "I swear I'll be the one to kill you." Alari got up and turned away, giving Rebecca a chance to look around. The jedi contingency was dead at Seela's feet, and Aric was holding one arm limp, reduced to using his sidearm. It wasn't his strong point. As Rebecca watched, Qyzen caught him in the side of the head with a kick, sending him to the ground. Without warning, Seela shouted to Alari. "More jedi! We can't keep holding this position!" Qyzen turned, and seeing Alari limping, ran over and helped her into the ship. As they took off, the jedi were just making it down the embankment. Alari didn't have time to see what their focus was before they were out of sight. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alari sat in the medical bay of Seela's ship. She was trying to stare blankly at the floor, positioned on a stool next to the bed. Ashara was sitting on the bed behind Alari, her arms wrapped around the human. Seela crouched in front of Alari, not letting her simply look at nothing. "I know all about that feeling of loss," Ashara said softly, "But it gets better, when you understand your true purpose." "I understand my purpose." Alari replied, her tone wooden. I don't know how long they were trying to comfort me. I do know that I must not have been thinking very clearly at all. My whole life, my every action, had just been nullified in a single blow. I felt as though my heart had just been ripped out and crushed. Seela moved so quickly, so silently, that I didn't realize she had even moved until I heard her voice. She was right next to my ear, in almost a whisper. There was just enough strength behind her voice for me to realize that she was singing.
