Altius looked around, trying and failing to find the voice that had spoken. It sounded as if the girl was right behind him when she said it. At least, it sounded like a girl… The death knight and mage from earlier had left some time before, and even the guard had stepped out for some reason. There didn’t seem to be anyone there. Arthur, too, was looking around in confusion, and it was only after the two had nearly given up did a giggle ring out. “You’ll have to be more perceptive than that…” It definitely sounds like a girl… but it’s not a voice I’ve ever heard before. Altius thought as he turned around, looking to where he was sure the voice had come from this time. Finding nothing but a tree, he looked upwards, finally spotting the owner of the voice. It was hard to tell much about her from where she sat, but it amazed Altius that he hadn’t seen her before. Her outfit was quite contrasting to the green and brown of the tree itself. She seemed to be wearing a tight leather outfit, the majority of it a dark blue with white lines swirling throughout it, becoming more prominent at the hands, the tips of her gloves being completely white. Besides a strange looking belt around her waist and black boots, the only other piece of clothing she wore was a white cloak, wrapped around her head, shoulders and upper back. Between that and her pale hair, most of her face was covered, but she appeared to be a human. The girl bounded down from the tree with ease, her cloak almost keeping her afloat as it rippled in the air. Altius noticed that it split into two triangles along her back, instead of having only one like normal cloaks. She landed with barely a sound on the grass, an amused smile on her face as she stood up straight. Altius realized as she stood that she was a head shorter than him, and actually rather cute. What he could see of her, anyways. He noticed the belt she wore was actually more of a decoration, her armor too tight to have any need of it. It was several loops of dark metal that gleamed slightly in the sunlight, the centerpiece being a brown gemstone he had never seen before. “Who are you?” Arthur asked curiously, pulling Altius out of his observations. The girl looked at the paladin, almost sizing him up. Her hair, Altius realized was a very light blonde, covered the left half of her face, but her right eye didn’t move as if it were working for two, so he assumed she could see through the veil of hair. I wonder if- “I’m Elara. And not interested in talking to you.” Altius started, surprised at the girl’s bluntness. Her introduction apparently finished, she looked back towards him, eyeing him as if he was a relic, something to ogle at. “I’m the boy’s teacher.” Arthur said, stepping up beside Altius. He leaned on his hammer, speaking irritably. “I think I deserve to know who you are and what you plan on doing with him.” Elara rolled her eyes, surprising Altius again at her defiance. She seemed only a few years older than him, herself, giving him an increasing respect despite himself for the girl. “I’ve already told you who I am. Altius,” she said, gesturing to him as she turned away, “I’ll be waiting for you just outside Stormwind’s gates.” Altius watched her leave curiously. How did she know my name? He turned to Arthur, seeing his mentor staring after the girl with his brow furrowed. Altius sighed. “You don’t trust her.” “There’s no reason to trust her.” Arthur said firmly, looking at him. “We don’t know how long she’s been watching us, she could be an assassin.” “An assassin wouldn’t have announced herself and her ambush site.” Altius said, trying to casually smooth over Arthur’s doubt. “True, but I couldn’t sense any connection to the Light from her, she might be a warlock.” Arthur said, looking back to the girl, jerking back in shock. “She’s gone!” Altius turned, seeing nothing but the guard who had returned to his post. Even at a sprint, he didn’t think the girl could get out of sight in that short amount of time. Brushing that aside, he turned back to Arthur. “It doesn’t matter, she might have summoned a mount of hers. Besides, if she were a warlock, why didn’t you feel any demonic energy?” Arthur hesitated, choosing his words carefully. “Well, she could have masked it…” “But she could have done the same had she been a servant of the Light.” Altius pointed out, tilting his head to one side. Arthur sighed, shaking his head. “You’re determined to go meet her, aren’t you?” Nodding, Altius looked to where Elara was last. “She seems like she can teach me a thing or two about movement, at the very least.” Arthur rolled his eyes. “Don’t say I didn’t warn you. But please, be careful.” “I will.” The sun was just setting over Stormwind’s mighty structures as Altius reached the gate leading to Elwynn forest. The rigid towers and walls were deformed by the encroaching shadows, night approaching far more rapidly than Altius had guessed. Will she still be there? What if it is a trap? Arthur’s warning had crept into his mind while he walked to the place Elara told him to go, filling him with unnatural worry. He looked toward the sky, but realized there were no clouds to distract him, instead a small bird flew above, getting closer and closer with every passing second. He grinned, realizing his longtime friend had come back to him. Holding out his arm, Pic landed quickly, chirping happily at seeing Altius. “How cute.” Altius jerked to a stop, looking around. He had walked further than he had thought, already having entered the forest. There was no one around, he had even managed to leave the road, standing alone amidst the trees. He was sure he had heard a voice, though, and was almost positive it was Elara. It didn’t come again, leaving him to decipher where she was. He scanned the trees, looking along the branches for any trace of her. Pic hopped around on his shoulders, keeping quiet but curious all the same. A small thud made Altius spin around, spotting Elara crouched behind him, as if she had just landed there. She slowly stood up, gazing up at him as she came to her full height. “Well well, and here I thought the paladin’s talk would have scared you off.” Altius took a step back, standing in a slightly defensive pose as Pic jumping into his hair. “It did have some effect, but if you can help me, I need it.” “Oh, I know. You need to stop Tylron and save your father.” Altius stood up straight, perplexed. She had just casually stated his goal, one he hadn’t told anyone save his mother and Emyth. “How did you-” “Too many questions…” Elara said, raising her eye to the trees above impatiently. That was only one question…Altius eyed the girl curiously. Now that he had seen her up close, she seemed most definitely human, but her eyes seemed strange. They seemed to be a very pale blue, almost glass-like. “Done staring?” She asked, hands on her hips. Altius narrowed his eyes. No matter how curious the girl was, he had something to do. “You said you’d help.” “I said I might be able to.” Elara corrected, taking several steps back. “And, if you can’t pass my tests, there is no way I’d be able to help you.” “What are the tests?” Altius said slowly. He gasped as she vanished into a tree. He felt warm breath wash over his ear, and her voice actually sent shivers down his spine. Pic flew out of his hair, just as startled as the boy himself. “Catch me.” And with that she was gone again, taking off in a sprint for the nearest tree. Hesitating a moment, Altius took off after her, finding her to be much faster than he would have guessed. She dashed around the tree, hardly slowing down as she bounded around. Altius had a harder time with it, weighed down slightly by his sword. He grabbed it with his right hand, simply intent on throwing it to the side when she appeared in front of him, arm out and palm almost touching his nose. He stopped faster than he thought he ever could, sword still in hand. “Now now, what’s the point of being able to run if you don’t carry your weapon with you?” She asked innocently. Altius glanced at the blade for a moment, unable to come up with an answer. Elara nodded, pushing off the ground in an impressive jump. She landed several yards behind where she was standing seconds ago, turning to run when she stopped. “Oh, and unless you can draw your weapon while sprinting… keep it in your hand.” Altius frowned, thinking he just had drawn his sword while sprinting, but realized he had slowed down considerably to do it. But running with it in hand would slow him down even more… He realized that Elara had ran out of sight just as he decided to run with his sword in hand. He hesitated, knowing she could be anywhere by now. Holding his sword precariously, he scanned the area, looking for any sign of white. There! She was climbing one of the taller trees in front of him, rather far away. He was initially amazed at her speed, but realized he should be used to it by now. He took off, awkwardly holding his sword in front of him the entire time. “Oh, and one more thing…” Altius slowed down, but didn’t stop, glancing around. She was talking to him, but still seemed to be climbing the tree. “This isn’t just a simple game of tag. Let’s turn things up a notch, shall we?” As soon as she spoke, a ghostly version of the girl jumped out of a bush to his right. His body moving almost on its own, he swung his sword in a large overcut, slicing the apparition in half, it vanishing into the air shortly after with a slight sound of wind passing by. He looked ahead once more, spotting her to be sitting casually in one of the higher branches of the tree, merely watching him. He started running again, shifting his sword around to try to find a place he could hold it while running. His body tingled. He had no immediate reason to do so, but he stopped on a small patch of dirt, swinging his sword horizontally behind him. His ears were greeted with the sound of wind, another apparition fading into the air. Another tingle. Changing his grip on the sword, he held it with a backwards grip and stabbed next to his left side, stabbing into a third apparition. It, too, fell into nothing. Altius glanced around quickly before taking off again, seeing Elara to still be in the tree. Letting his sword fall to his side while having both hands on it, Altius suddenly found it much easier to run, as if a burden had been lifted off of him. He hardly slowed down as he swung at another apparition jumping out from his left, feeling no resistance as his sword cut through it. The tree was much further ahead of him that he had assumed, still having at least a hundred yards to go. Two apparitions stood at the base of the tree, holding their hands out toward him. One after the other, they shot white spheres out of their palm, aimed directly at him. Altius twisted to the side, easily dodging the first, but the second seemed to change course midflight, and was still flying straight toward him. He held his sword out in defense, mildly surprised when the steel cut straight through the magic sphere. As he looked ahead again, he skidded to a halt, letting the tip of his sword rest on the ground. Standing in front of him was a fully armored knight, made out of the same wispy material as the apparitions of Elara, but Altius got the impression that this one wouldn’t go down with a single strike. The ethereal being slowly drew a sword and shield, readying itself against the boy. Body still fueled by adrenaline, Altius made a dash for the knight, bringing his sword in a lethal downwards slice. The knight brought its shield up to meet it, Altius feeling a slight pain in his arm as his sword met far more resistance than he was expecting. He could see the knight stagger slightly under the force, but still managed to raise his sword in an attempt to stab at Altius’s exposed chest. The boy hopped backward, wincing as his sword scraped against the ghostly shield. Readying himself again, the knight appeared to be waiting for Altius to make a move. Altius weighed his options for a moment before a flicker of movement caught his eye. He turned just in time for the white sphere to hit him directly in the chest. It didn’t seem to have any elemental property, but it still hit him with a concussive force, knocking him back several feet. He staggered slightly before raising his sword, fending off the second sphere. The knight began to approach, holding his sword high above his head. Altius raised his sword once more to meet the knight’s blade, the grinding sound of steel coming to a halt above his head. The knight, however, brought his shield arm up, bashing Altius in the ribs, forcing him back and to lose his hold on his sword, letting it fall but not dropping it. Altius coughed, a bit of blood falling to the grass. Another tingle struck him, ducking just in time to dodge another sphere of magic, lunging to the side to avoid the second. The knight walked after him again, shield and sword in ready position. Channeling his own magic in his hands, Altius let the soothing power of the light wash over him, healing what damage the magic and knight had done. Channeling more magic into his sword, he took off for the knight, surprising the apparition enough into stopping. Bringing his sword down in the same downward smash as before, the knight raised his shield to deflect it, but at the last second, Altius flicked his wrist, the weight of the sword shifting around the shield and down on the knight’s shoulder. Altius felt resistance, but the weight of the sword carried it through the armor and into the apparition itself, the knight jerking away from the blade and back a few steps, his sword arm now limp. Shaking his head, he started for Altius again, raising his shield menacingly. Out of the corner of his eye, Altius spotted another round of magic attacks being sent his way, just to the right of the knight. Narrowing his eyes, he jumped to the left, forcing the magic to change course. Bringing back his shield to bash him again, the knight jerked as he was struck with a magic sphere, being forced to his knees as he was hit with the second. Altius swung his sword horizontally at the knight’s neck, this apparition actually falling before it faded into the night. Altius glanced up, seeing the two ethereal Elaras preparing more magic attacks. He took off for them again, holding his sword down by his side. He was closing in on the two apparitions quickly, making them hesitated and look at each other. After a moment, they pointed their palms at each other, the two spheres flying at each other and stopping in the middle. They merged, forming a larger sphere that grew with every passing second. Altius slowed to a stop, raising his sword defensively. Once the sphere had grown to quadruple the size of any individual sphere, it erupted, sending small bolts of white magic at him at terrifying speeds. He flicked his wrist, slicing left through the first, right through the second, and swung upward to cut through the third. He grunted as the fourth hit him in the thigh, bringing his sword down to cut through the next. He noticed the two apparitions constantly feeding magic into the erupting sphere, and knew that if he didn’t stop them somehow, the assault might be endless. He sliced through one more bolt as his magic came to life, surging through his entire body and then outward, forming a protective sphere around his body. The bolts harmlessly fading into the defensive sphere, Altius ran for the apparitions, cutting down the left one before she even noticed his approach. The one on the right was startled into stopping her flow of magic, the bolts coming to a stop just as Altius’s magical barrier fell. He raised the sword to the apparition, as if daring it to do something, but it merely stood there, watching him. Without warning, it fell to its knees, holding its head down in submission. Altius moved to attack it, there was another tingle. Looking up the tree’s trunk, he spotted the real Elara, still watching him as if he were an odd trinket found by a wandering adventurer. He looked back at the apparition, who hadn’t moved from her submissive position. He pulled the sword back, the apparition looking up in surprise as he sheathed it on his back. Looking at the tree, he scanned it for any possible way to climb it. Quickly spotting a knot big enough for his hand, he moved to grab it, spotting another and another. It seemed as if this tree had known it would be used for climbing, and Altius found himself sailing up its trunk, getting closer to Elara every second. He stepped out onto a branch seemingly too small to support him, but it barely bent in response. He nodded at Elara, who sat one branch above him. She nodded in return, clapping softly. “Well done. You’ve passed the first test.”
