Shark patiently waited in the foyer for the clock to hit six. He had made sure his backpack wasn't too heavy for him to carry. He took a deep breath, almost as if he were trying to will time to speed up.
At some point, Lolly walked downstairs early in the morning, likely to use the bathroom or get a snack. She sneered at the sight of her older brother standing by the front door.
"You know going to school early won't help make up your late work," she said in a rather condescending tone. Shark looked over at her, but said nothing. He merely looked back down at his watch, realizing that Dudley would be arriving in about five minutes.
"Why do you think waking up early makes you look good, huh? Suddenly you're so superior that you don't need to talk to me? You saw what Daddy does for a living, and now that makes you better than me?" The older teen ignored the questions his mega-bitch of a sister kept asking him. He looked out the nearest window, and saw the sun beginning to rise. He looked down again, and realized it was now 6 a.m.
Almost as if on cue, he saw a police cruiser drive up to the front of the house. Dudley got out, and walked at least three-fourths of the way towards the mansion. Lolly's eyes widened, and she sprinted upstairs to warn her family that Dudley was here.
Without making a sound, Shark opened the front door, and met up with his uncle.
"You ready to go, sport?" The teen slowly nodded, and the two silently walked the distance back to Dudley's cruiser. Despite there being room in the front, Shark opted to sit in the back passenger's seat, instead using the front seat for his backpack.
By the time the other Racket family members ran outside, all in their pajamas, Dudley was already switching the car back on. Shark looked out the window at all six of them. There had been a time when he loved his relatives. He may have had some dislike towards Bill and Lolly, but the other four he was always ready to embrace.
But now, he realized what kind of people they really were. His blinding love for them turned into virulent hatred. His hate for Dennis was for obvious reasons. The rest of them, it was for their callous disregard for his feelings. His mother and grandparents didn't seem to know their husband and son was an incestuous prick.
Where there had once been words of praise for them, there were no words at all. But then, actions spoke louder than words.
Shark got a better look at them, their confused and horrified faces. He felt no pity for them, and in fact felt as if they were deserving. Instead of shouting out some kind of snide remark, Shark opted for the silent answer.
Before Dudley drove off to his house, Shark lifted his fist up, and flipped his middle finger. Not just to his father, but to all of them. He gave his new opinion of all of them, in just one powerful hand gesture. A grin came upon his face, one that indicated that the owner was finally free.
Shark watched as everyone angrily ran shouting toward the police cruiser, in a futile effort to get their boy back. At this, Shark couldn't help but dryly laugh a little.
A week had passed since Shark left the mansion. He didn't ignore the major shift in house size. The living room in Racket Mansion alone was as big as Dudley's entire house. Oftentimes, he saw Dudley at his home desk, writing on important-looking papers. Other times, he heard him talking on the phone.
One night, Dudley was at the police station sorting the whole situation out. Shark had just returned from looking for a part-time job, when he saw the number on the answering machine flashing. Apparently, in the few hours he was at school and job-hunting, they received six messages.
Thankfully, since he left, the boy hadn't encountered any of his relatives. The number still made his blood run cold. He reluctantly pressed the button ans began listening.
"I hate you!" Lolly's screechy voice rang through the empty house. It was loud enough for Shark to cover his ears. "Everyone at school is making fun of me now! Why'd you go and snitch on Daddy?! Now he's gonna go to prison and we'll lose our house and our money, and I won't be able to get the good kind of makeup, and I'll have to buy my dresses at a regular store like a poor person and--" Shark immediately pressed delete. He was getting tired of his sister's whiny tirade.
The next four messagees were basically the same thing, just differently worded. Shark's grandparents each stated that he was just being a young brat. Bill screamed that he always knew the boy was a traitor. Shark's mother merely voiced disappointment that she thought she raised him better than that.
Silver had never raised Shark at all. She, like the rest of them, was merely spouting pretentious bullshit. After erasing each message to that point, Shark prepared himself to listen to the last message, thinking it was Dennis. Much to his shock and surprise, it wasn't.
"Hey. Just thought I'd let you know I'm out on parole. I, uh...can't really leave the house because of it, but...just thought I'd let you know." Sinbad's voice sounded tired, and defeated. "I don't care if you delete this, I'm still gonna try to make things up to you either way. Just...when you get this, can you come to my place as soon as possible? It's kind of a little awkward to talk about over the phone. If you decide to come, I'll see you when you get here."
The recording ended right before Shark's Uncle Dudley walked through the front door.
"Afternoon, Shark! Hope you managed to avoid trouble today." He smiled warmly, and Shark returned it.
"I...I did." He looked away for a brief moment, before deciding to ask. "Um, Uncle Dudley, is it all right if I stay at a friend's house tonight?"
"Oh? Anyone I might know of?" To Shark, it felt like a trick question.
"Eh...Not really. Just a friend I was hoping to catch up with."
Dudley looked deep in thought, before nodding. "Well, all right. Just make sure the other Rackets don't catch sight of you." The teen leapt up to hug his uncle, then began to get ready to leave.
