The Chase in the Wastes
Hank came across an old barn and a silo, east of Old Olney; it was a shimmering shifting shadow, almost a mirage in the distance. The place was a total wreak, it was a wonder the silo and barn were still standing, and by the looks of it raiders had taken up residents. He wasn’t sure if he should stop or skirt around it, his pursers were probably close to him, he quickly decided to eliminate the threat and send a message to his pursuers. He dropped down behind a rock outcropping checking his clip to make sure it was full. Hank peeked carefully over the rocks, he saw one raider on the walkway on top of the silo, three strolling around the barn area. There could be more but he couldn’t see them. He sighted up on the silo one. Bang! Pure luck the shot took the guy’s head off. He heard the guys buddies say “What are you shooting at?” They couldn’t see his body. Then his head hit the ground, they saw that.
“What the fuck?” he heard one of the girls say. They started looking around for the assailant; he slid up the rock slightly and sighted up the guy moving his way. Bang! Bang! Bang! They both dropped, Hank behind the rock and the raider to the ground. That was probably a tell on my location he thought. He looked around the rock and sure enough saw the other two cautiously moving in his direction. He pulled one of his grenades and chucked it over the rock.
“Shit!” they cried. He jumped up and quickly open fired on them before they had a chance to recover. He heard a shot ring out and then a jerk on his left arm as if someone pulled him, he ducked. Looking at his arm it was bleeding but not bad, that raider can’t aim for shit Hank thought. The shot had come from behind the barn next to the Brahmin pin. He peeked around the rocks, he could see the guy now still looking in his direction. Hank moved off to the right with the barn blocking his movements, he could kill this guy with no problem. He was edging down the side of the barn when he thought, why don’t I use the high ground with a clearer area of fire? He went in the barn and headed up the stairs. He peeked out, the raider was still looking in the direction of his previous location. Bang! Bang! Bang! The raider fell.
“Too easy” he said, then feeling the pain in his arm “Well maybe not” as he started to waver and fell against the wall. The wound was worse than he had assumed and now he was in trouble far from help and alone. He woke several hours later and not realizing he had been out for so long and due to blood loss he stumbled out and started heading northeast.
He passed a power station in the distance off to his right but he took in none of this. Finally he saw a fence and made for the gate but before he could reach it he collapsed again, faintly hearing “Hey mister you ok?” as he blacked out.
He awoke in a daze not recognizing the room he was in. “I think he’s awake” he heard a young voice call out.
“Sally?” he mumbled groggily looking around.
“No that was Flower, our youngest.” He heard another voice say realizing it was an older woman this time. “How are you feeling?” she continued.
“Confused. Where am I?”
“Why you are in the Republic of Dave.” he heard a new male voice say. “And I am Dave.” Hank sat up, he was on a make shift bed under a stairway. Looking around he saw a long table with several people sitting at it, four where children and the others appeared to be in various stages of age.
“What is going on? How did I get here?” Hank inquired.
“We found you outside the gate and brought you inside.” The woman told him. Hank glanced at the long table noticing everyone was now looking in his direction.
“I should probably go, I got a group of people following me.”
“First, Dave said he wanted to talk to you. I’m Rosie by the way.” The woman told him. “He’ll be in his office.” She said gesturing around the corner.
“I don’t have time… where are my weapons?” he asked finally realizing they weren’t there.
“In his office.” Rosie told him.
“I guess I’ll speak with Dave.” Hank said.
He made his way into Dave’s office. He immediately saw his guns on the desk with Dave seated on the opposite side, with an unfamiliar woman standing next to him.
“You wanted to see me?”
Dave a little taken aback “Is that how you address the President of the Republic of Dave?”
“I don’t really have time for this. Unless you want trouble in your little town here.” Hank said as he moved forward and grabbed his guns.
“This is not a town this is a sovereign Republic, recognized by all in the wasteland.”
“I’ve never heard of it.” Hank quickly stated.
“Jessica could you check on the children?” Dave said. “I need you to do something for me before you go.” he said when she was gone.
“What would that be?”
“This is a republic,”
“Yeah you mentioned that.” Hank interrupted.
Dave continued as if he wasn’t interrupted. “And in a republic we vote in an election to appoint a new leader, but the others have been lax in their casting of the ballot, and I want it over sooner rather than later so if you could just tell the others to vote.”
“And why can’t you do that?”
“As president it wouldn’t look right for me to order them to vote.”
Hank stepped out into the main room. “Dave wants you all to vote so the election is over.”
“There, I asked them.” he said turning back to Dave. “You know I’ve seen very few grownups here, how do you defend yourselves?”
“My son Bob, and wives Rosie and Jessica are all armed, and I am a superb shot, don’t get any ideas.”
“I got a few people following me and I’m sure if they came across this place they’d kill you all and take everything you got.”
“All who invade the Republic will be killed!”
“Well they are coming.” Hank said realizing he didn’t exactly ask to come in either.
Following Mercs POV
A large group of well-armed mercs, nine in all, was walking towards the power station south of the Republic, “Is he in there?” Three moved up to the door taking positions one either side, as one kicked it in the other two swarmed in firing.
“It’s empty” one called.
“There is supposed to be a settlement north of here, maybe he made it that far.” The leader said.
“There was a lot of blood; you think he got that far? If it was even his.” One of the mercs said.
“I’m sure it was, there was no body near it, and if he hadn’t of given us the slip in the junkyard we would have caught him at the barn.” The leader said.
Hank’s POV
Hank was on the roof of the “Capitol Building” with his Blackhawk scoping out the area. He had been doing this for a while, seeing nothing. Then he saw hazy movement on the horizon. “That could be them.” he commented. As it got closer he could make out several people. “That’s them.” He jumped off and went inside. “Mister President you have visitors on their way and like I said they aren’t here to talk.” Hank said. He had decided to buy into Dave’s dilution that he was important so he could get a little help with this guys.
“Bob to the gate. Send them on their way.” Dave said heading to his safe. A few quick spins it popped open and he pulled out a hunting rifle.
“A hunting rifle?” Hank said a little surprised a guy like Dave would use one.
“Ol’ Painless is my lucky gun, it never misses.”
Hank headed outside and hid on the side of the Museum that was the shooting range. Minutes later he heard an exchange of words, at the main gate.
“This is the Republic of Dave and you have no permission to enter.” Bob said.
“Are you fucking kidding me? Get the fuck out the way!” The merc leader shouted. “We are looking for someone and have good reason to believe he is here.”
Bob back up slightly and drew his gun. “This is your last warning, leave or be killed.” They all drew their guns too, Bob started firing and dove to the side, got up quickly and took up a position behind the museum. Dave was in the door of his Capitol Building firing on the mercs, they quickly dispersed to avoid the gunfire. Three were making their way around the left side Hank could see them threw the fence, probably looking for a way in. They got to the back corner and started to climb the fence, once his head was over the fence Hank stepped out gun drawn and pointing at his head.
“HE’S HERE!” he shouted. That was all Hank wanted him to do, he fired blowing apart the mercs head, he saw hands on the top of the fence right next to the other and fired through the boards that were there, hearing the guy hit the ground. He turned around and saw two others hitting the ground after scaling the fence on the opposite side, drawing their guns and firing on everything. Hank got one of the mercs in the arm before they saw him. Bob had moved up and took out one with several chest shots; Dave got the injured one in the head. Four down, five more Hank counted. He just needed to find them. He then saw one appear on the roof of the dormitory. He saw Hank first and shot at him catching him in the arm and leg. He hit the ground and rolled out of his line of sight. The merc went down too, to avoid being shot.
The wounds were bad Hank assessed, he was bleeding profusely and started to have trouble seeing straight. Dave had abandoned his hunting rifle for speed and had his assault rifle out, he also saw Jessica shooting at the main gate, some must have tried there again. Rosie was inside guarding the children. He was having a harder time seeing straight. It was too soon after that raider attack to be fighting again, he looked at his left arm and saw the bandage was red, soaked in blood and more leaking out, that injury had reopened. Dave was crouching next to the flag pole in the middle of the open, not smart Hank thought. One of the Mercs appeared from around the corner of the Capitol Building, he must have scaled the fence, and he was aiming at Dave. Hank raised his .44 and fired, and moving as it was caught the guy in the leg, knocking his shot off and missing Dave by inches. Feeling the force of the bullet pass Dave spun around and rattled off three shots in his chest.
Hank had passed out, Bob was shaking him awake, “Are you alive?” he asked.
“Barely.” Hank replied in a whisper. He felt being lifted and nothing after that.
He awoke sometime later in the bed again, feeling like he was tied down. He looked and saw he was heavily bandaged. The gun shots to his right arm and leg plus the previous one to his left arm was redone.
He rested there for several days, before he decided he was well enough and needed to leave. He limped into Dave’s Office. “Thank you Mr. President daddy” one of the girls said as she walked out.
“Mr. President. How many did we get?”
“Seven.” Jessica answered. “The deathclaw’s got two.” Jessica took her leave.
“I think it’s time I leave before I bring more trouble in to your country.” As much as he thought Dave was nuts, he liked these crazies for the help they gave him.
“Yes you seem to attract trouble. I cannot forget what you did for me though.”
“What was that?” Hank asked, he was still fuzzy on some of the later details of the battle.
“You shot that merc that was coming up behind me, you didn’t kill him but you did shoot him causing him to miss. And for that I want to give you this.” he said holding up his hunting rifle. “I seem to have out grown it, I prefer the assault rifle. I have made special modifications to that rifle it’s no ordinary hunting rifle.”
“Thanks.” He said not sure what he was going to do with it.
He got to the door when Rosie came in. “Are you leaving?” she asked.
“Yeah I have to go.”
“You aren’t in any condition to travel.” She judged.
“I’ve been worse, trust me, I’ll be fine. And I know a few people that will be worried about me, how long has it been since I got here anyway?”
“It’s been several days.”
“Exactly, they might think I’m dead by now.”
“Alright. If you can wait we can accompany you to Canterbury Commons.”
Just to avoid an argument he agreed. Moments later the Brahmin had empty packs on it and they were off.
It took him days to get back to Megaton, he had to avoid all the areas Raiders were known to setup, find safe places to bed down when he was too tired to continue, and he had several close calls with rad scorpions and robots, but he finally made it.
He limped in the door and was immediately seen by Lucas Simms. “Hank! What the hell happened to you?”
“Had a fight.” He mumbled.
“And got your ass kick by the looks of it. I’ll take you Doc Church.”
“No, home.” he said totally exhausted then blacked out.
He woke up in his bed his head in Ginn’s lap she was lightly caressing his hair.
He had been changed out of his leather armor and was in some loose fitting clothes.
“Are you ok?” Ginn asked noticing his movement.
“Better now that I’m back.”
“What happened?” she asked her eyes full of concern.
“I got shot a lot. I think I should start wearing my power armor all the time. The leather ain’t cutting it.” he said.
“So who shot you? Are they coming here?” She asked.
“Hold on. let me see if I can remember it all. I went to see Uncle Roe, he had a message for me. He told me some people were looking for me, not your normal guys. Remember those guys that came into town when I was acting sheriff?” She nodded. “It was their compatriots, apparently they were part of a merc group, very much like Talon, all the bad shit no self-respecting merc would do. They were looking for revenge. On the way back I ran into them. I leaded them on a merry chase, I thought I lost them in the junkyard but they caught up with me. I got into a scrap with some raiders at a farm, one got me and I must have got turned around and ended up at some place up north of here called the Republic of Dave. After some time they found me and the guys at the republic helped me fight them off. They weren’t your ordinary mercs, but they are all dead now, so I guess I don’t have to worry anymore, and if there are anymore the Lyons Pride is going to help me clean house.” He concluded as she patiently listened. “Can you bring me my pack? I just remembered something.”
She reached down and pulled it up. “Here you go.” He reached for the long package that was sticking out of the top. “Here.” he said handing it up to her.
She unwrapped it. “It’s a hunting rifle.” She said unimpressed.
“It’s called Ol’ Painless, and the guy that gave it to me said he made special modifications to it so it’s no ordinary hunting rifle. Use it, if its better keep it, if not scrap it for parts, whichever way is more useful. Why is it so quiet here?” he finally asked not hearing anything from the annoying robot, thruster nor voice.
“I shut off Wadsworth.” She said.
“You did? I didn’t even think to ever try.”
“He was bothering me I had enough of him, he’s in the corner above the door.”
“Now I’m really glad I’m home.”
“Me too.” She said as she leaned down to give him a kiss.
