Fallout: Life In The Wasteland
"It's been two days now since I left Illust. Dawn went crazy, she knocked out Ace for taking something called "Jet". She said that Ace would've hurt us for money just to get more Jet. I don't know if that's true or not, but I know that I can't trust Dawn anymore. For all I know, she might hurt me for doing something that I didn't think was so bad. I thought...I thought she liked me, but now I'm not so sure. She mentioned a place named "New Reno" the last time I saw her, saying that it was to the south. I don't know what direction I'm going in now, but at least it's away from Dawn. She said I would've had a good time at New Reno if I was with her. I'm sure I can enjoy it on my own."
Kid stopped writing in his journal, slipping the pencil and little book into his back pocket. The sun had set an hour or so before, but still he kept moving. The land around him was endless and flat. A cool breeze flew over everything, occasionally tossing up a light dust cloud. The stars dotted the sky in the millions, shining him a gentle path in the darkness. He pushed his hands into his pockets and got moving once more, the muscles in his legs tired of constantly shifting, but still he pressed on. He couldn't hear anything all around him as he walked, moving for another twenty minutes or so in silence. Suddenly he spotted something in the distance. It looked like a large blob in the horizon, almost standing still, but no, it was moving slowly. Because he was able to see it at night, he figured it must have been closer than it appeared. He quickly began to walk towards it, wondering what it was. As he grew closer about fifteen minutes later, he began to be able to make out human shapes along with shorter, bigger shapes. The dusty ground beneath his feet make soft noises as he stepped along it. He became aware of urgent talking.
He froze. A moment passed. He wondered if he had been detected. His fears came true as a shot fired out, a bullet whizzing past his head. "Fuck!" Someone shouted out from the group. Kid dropped to the ground in fear, not knowing what to do. "Wait, I think you might have gotten him!" A man's voice said. "Better go check his body." A girl said. Kid became aware of footsteps approaching him. His heart was pounding, he could feel it painfully strike the inside of his chest as he lay on the ground. What should he do? What would Dawn do? The person reached him, tapping him with their foot. A man spoke. "I don't think I can see any blood..." At these words, Kid sprung up, someone shouting out for the man to watch out. Taken by surprise, Kid wrested his gun from him, it being some sort of pistol. He pointed it right into the man's face, Kid's finger on the trigger. Nobody did anything. Everyone stayed still. Kid took in what the man looked like. He had a shaven head, along with a big, bushy brown beard. His eyes were twinkling blue in the night, like the stars above. His mouth hung open slightly. He was dressed in a tight leather jacket, the jacket only having one sleeve, also dressed in leather pants and hiking boots.
Kid stared at him long and hard. The man slowly began to smile. "Well, he's alive, and he's a lively one, too!" The man laughed wholeheartedly. Kid noticed he spoke in a different way than he had heard people speak by that point. He had an accent that Kid wasn't familiar with. The man grinned warmly. "If you're gonna shoot me son, might as well get it over with. Better be prepared to run though, 'cuz me mates would be more than happy to try and avenge me, I'm sure." Kid glanced over to the several shadowed figures standing to the side. Kid slowly said "Wh-Why did you t-try shooting me?" The man said "We thought you were a damn ghoul, or worse, a raider! Nothing worse than a raider, scum of the earth, they are. Once knew a ghoul raider, that was a funny day, made sure to kill him with me own blade, I did." Kid kept staring into the man's eyes darkly. The man smiled and said "You look like you could do with a good meal mate, relax, put the gun down, show's over, we get it, you don't take shit from no-one. The only reason the rest of me mates are still pointing their guns at'cha is 'cuz you've still got my gun pointed at me." Kid kept pointing the gun at the man for a few more moments before slowly lowering it. The man grinned broadly. "Atta boy, alright, come on, pass over the gun now, we'll get you all fixed up proper once everything is as it should be." Kid didn't hand over the gun. "I th-think I'd l-like to hold onto it, th-thanks." Kid said firmly. The man raised up his hands non-threateningly, saying "Alright mate, your choice. Come on, let's get back to the rest, we can give you a meal." Kid glanced back at the shadows of everyone, seeing around five standing-shadows, with a few bigger, shorter ones. The smaller ones looked like animals.
"What are y-you guys?" Kid asked. The man grinned more. "We're a trading caravan, son! Ronald Hindley is m'name, at your service." The man did a short bow, grinning all the while. "You've just run into Hindley's Helping Carts, a caravan group that tries it's very hardest to reach all the finest establishments in the wastes!" Kid said "A caravan? Wh-What's that?" Ronald said "Well, it's basically a big trolley with stuff that people take from place to place, selling things to whoever needs it! We bring new and much-needed supplies to developing places, and help keep the economy of some of the older, bigger places fresh and cool. Could always use another guard, 'nother mate, if you're interested. You can keep the gun if you want." Kid asked "Where are y-you headed next?" Ronald placed his hands on his waist as he said "New Reno m'boy, not the friendliest place in the wastes, so if you do decide to come along with us, you might wanna stick close when we get there. Junkies there are about as likely to ask you for spare caps as they are to slash your throat to rob you of anything you might have." Kid shrugged and nodded slightly. "Alright. S-Sounds good to me." He said. Ronald grinned. "Excellent! I'm glad we could solve this little predicament, I'd have hated to see this go all sixes and sevens, neither of us would have come out of it lookin' pretty. You all right, mate? Me heart's beatin' so fast, I got all this adrenaline goin' now, whoo!" Kid actually smiled a little. Everyone lowered their guns. Ronald stepped closer to Kid and threw a strong arm around his neck in a friendly manner. "Come on, we'll get some munch in ya, everything's all good. Afraid to say we don't have any scrummy lyin' around, but most of it is good." One of the shadows called out "Damn it Ronald, this whole thing nearly gave me a heart attack!" Ronald raised a hand and waved it at the voice's owner carelessly. Ronald led Kid over to the group, Kid still gripping the pistol tightly, ready to raise it and fire it if he had to.
Ronald introduced him to his group and showed him everything they had. The had several strange animals pulling large contraptions behind them. The animals were rather large and stood on four legs, having two heads to them. The animal's eyes showed them to be very peaceful and calm creatures. Their skin was dark brown and leathery. Ronald called them "brahmin". They had ropes around their necks, the ropes attached to a metallic cart of sorts, the carts filled with crates and bags of varying sizes. Ronald said that the carts were made from the backs of cars, using the trunk of the car along with the back wheels to make things easier on the brahmin. There were five people in Ronald's group, not including him. One was a young man with slicked-back hair with leather armour, armed with some sort of assault rifle. Ronald said his name was Sheldon. Then there was a young girl, looking perhaps a year older than Kid, dressed in a green shirt and brown pants. She had a large pump-action shotgun in her hands, a medical bag hanging around her waist by a leather strap, a first-aid box strapped around her body, staying put on her back, the strap going around her chest, just under where her breasts must have been. Her body wasn't exactly curvy. Her hair was a little short and styled to the sides, behind her ears. Ronald said her name was Mandy.
The next was a man dressed in some sort of suit of metal armour, metal plates going around his chest and arms and legs, but leaving his stomach uncovered so he could breathe easily. He had short blonde hair, an assault rifle in his hands, just like Sheldon. The fourth was a girl with deep tanned skin, having a chocolate tint to it. Her hair was long and black, tied into thin braids. She wore a thin woven cloth around her chest and another down between her legs. She had a spear in her right hand and an uzi of some kind in her left. Ronald said her name was Terra. The last one was another girl, looking a few years older than Kid. She had long black wavy hair and light skin. She was dressed in a suit of combat armour, but she seemed to have painted over the green of the armour to make it dark red lined with black. The armoured plates covered her body entirely, except for her head. She was wearing a black helmet to go with the combat armour. A bag hung by her side, on her right hip. Kid saw it to be filled with small circular objects. In her hands she held a combat shotgun. She was wearing an eyepatch over her right eye, a black leather circle being over her eye, a thin strap of leather going around her head, keeping the patch in place. Ronald said her name was Tansy. Kid gave Ronald a strange look. "Tansy" sounded like a little girl's name. Ronald looked back at him and said "Don't ask mate, you ask and she'll just get pissed at you, best you just move on." Kid nodded. Ronald said "Well, we're about to keep moving, we've been doing this for so long that the brahmin know what path we're takin', so you can just hop up into a trolley and fall asleep, we'll be in New Reno in another day or two." Kid nodded, jumping up into the car-cart that was being pulled by the nearest brahmin. He pulled out his little notebook and pencil, turning to the next page, writing down in it.
"Things got a little tense as I met up with a caravan group. Their leader, Ronald, showed me everyone in the group. He said they were all going to New Reno. I guess I'll be fine with them for now. Ronald let me keep his gun. I checked it; it's loaded. I don't know if any of them will try anything, but if they do, I'll kill as many of them as I can before they probably take me down. Ronald said that we'd be in New Reno in a day or two. I'll try and get some sleep, but I'll make sure to keep the pistol nearby. I don't really trust any of the people in this group."
Kid put the little book in his back pocket, along with his pencil. He laid himself down on a few bags of some sort of item, trying to get comfortable, quickly falling asleep. He wasn't asleep for very long before he suddenly felt someone nearby. He shifted slightly, coming into wakefulness. He bolted up into a sitting position. All of the brahmin, all four of them, were still moving peacefully, heading on their own. The sun was barely starting to peek up on the horizon. He saw the many sleeping forms of the others in the makeshift carriages the brahmin made. But what shocked him was that someone else was in his little cart with him. It was Mandy, the girl with the medical equipment he had seen before. She didn't have anything with her, being completely unarmed. She was sitting on her knees by him, smiling nervously at him. Shyness was twinkling in her eyes. Kid saw that the only other person to have a cart to themselves was Ronald, every other cart had at least a pair of people. Kid sleepily asked "Are you supposed to share this cart with me?" Mandy shook her head softly. When she spoke, she sounded shy and generally timid. "N-No, but...I noticed that nobody ever fed you...You just fell asleep in here without eating anything...So...I brought you some stuff..." She pulled out a little brown bag from behind her, holding it out to Kid.
Kid slowly reached over and took it, placing it by himself. Mandy smiled a little more at his acceptance of her gift. Kid narrowed his eyes a little, looking at her. "Okay...Um...Th-Thanks." He said a little carelessly. Mandy stayed with him for a few more moments quietly before Kid asked "W-Was that all?" Mandy blinked, seemingly coming out of a spell. The cart's gentle movements constantly came out from under them. She said "Well...I was kind of hoping I could...Um..." Her cheeks began to fill with blush. "I was hoping I could...I don't know...Ah...I...It's hard to explain...Um...I..." Kid narrowed his eyes further. He didn't know what the girl wanted, but whatever it was, he wasn't going to give her anything. She gasped as he grabbed his pistol, raising it up quickly and pressing the barrel to her forehead. He cocked back the hammer. Tears sprung up in her eyes as she softly said "Oh God, please don't kill me!..." Kid had a determined face as he forcefully said "Get. Out. Go b-back to whatever c-cart you were sleeping in." Mandy nodded vigorously, crawling out of the cart, nearly falling to the ground. She quickly ran off to a nearby cart, jumping up into it, disappearing from sight.
Kid let out a soft sigh. He fell back into his comfortable sleeping position. For a few minutes he lay there, unmoving, when his thoughts turned to the bag Mandy had given him. Now that he thought about it, he was pretty hungry. He reached over and grabbed the bag, slowly uncocking his pistol at the same time. He opened the bag up, seeing a glass bottle within, along with some sort of wrapped-up sandwich. The sandwich was made of a thin bread of sorts, along with some meat and cheese. The cheese smelled a little sour, but taking a bite from the sandwich proved that it's taste was not the same as it's scent. The sandwich tasted not too bad, Kid sort of liked it. He pulled out the glass bottle. It was filled with a light red fluid. Part of the glass stuck out from the bottle and was coloured light yellow, the letters spelling out "Cherry Nuka-Cola". Kid pulled off the yellow cap to it, quickly downing a mouthful of the warm pop. It tasted not too bad, ironically enough tasting like cherry cola. Kid finished the sandwich and soda, quickly falling back into a deep sleep now that he had a belly full of food.
He awoke to the realization that the carts had stopped moving. Shots rang out. Kid cautiously grabbed his pistol, slowly sitting up. The group stood over some sort of dead creature, riddled with bullets. It looked to be perhaps the same height as one of the brahmin, but much thinner, definitely not as long as a brahmin. Ronald noticed him sitting up in his cart. He smiled warmly and waved to him. "Mornin' my boy! Nothing to worry about, just a deathclaw baby, thought our brahmin would make a nice snack. Bad luck for it, eh?" The whole group got back to their carts, the brahmin beginning to move as Ronald patted the lead brahmin on the neck of it's right head. Ronald called out to Kid. "There it is! Can you see it? Down there! New Reno!" Kid looked into the distance, raising a hand to his face, blocking out the glare of the now-risen sun. There it was, in all it's glory. New Reno. A huge mass of buildings, some destroyed, most of them intact. It had real concrete streets. It was still a few miles off, but he could see it well. He smiled at Ronald, flashing him a thumbs-up signal. Ronald grinned. Kid lay back in the cart, closing his eyes and relaxing in the sun, silently passing the time as the carts slowly but steadily made their way towards their destination.
"We're here, wake up, boy." Kid heard a girl say to him. He opened his eyes, sitting up. The girl that had spoken to him was Terra. He sat up. They were all in an ancient pre-war parking lot, the brahmin-carts all close to one another. A sign nearby said that they were on Virgin Street. He hadn't even noticed that they had all entered New Reno. Across the street, someone was shouting out that he had a lot of "booty" at the Cat's Paw, the building he was standing in front of. Gunshots sounded off in the distance every few minutes. On the opposite side of the four-way intersection that they were at stood the Desperado casino, a huge golden sign of sorts adorned with tons of lightbulbs on it's front, just above the large double-door entrance. None of the lights were turned on due to it being daytime, Kid wondering what the sign might look like at night. He smiled at everything. Ronald stood nearby, dealing with a man in a heavy green jacket, the two of them bartering over prices and such. Several more people began to line up to talk to Ronald, wanting to deal with him. Terra said "Keep an eye out. These people have no problem against stealing, even violence if they think they got the guns for it." Kid nodded. Terra stood up and jumped down from his cart, Kid doing the same, grabbing his pistol and holding it by his side, ready to fire at and kill anyone that tried to rip Ronald off. He didn't want to stay with the group, he wanted to see what he could do in New Reno on his own, but he figured that he at least owed the group a favour.
He noticed Mandy looking over to him. He looked at her. She quickly looked away with fear in her eyes. Kid's mind went back to the night when she came into his cart. He wondered what it was that she could have wanted. He stood guard with the rest for nearly half an hour before Ronald suddenly shouted out at someone that began to run. Tansy raised up her assault rifle without hesitation, firing several shots into the fleeing thief. Everyone, including Kid, raised their weapons to the rest of the potential buyers, potential thieves. Ronald smiled and said "Sorry folks, shop's closed for the rest of the day. You can thank your little mate there for pissing me off with his little stunt. Sheldon, go get me damn Mentats back." Sheldon began to walk over, reaching down to the junkie's corpse, taking back the item known as "Mentats". He walked back over to Ronald, handing it to him. The disgruntled men and women all began to shuffle off, Ronald crossing his arms across his chest. Kid took the opportunity to walk up to Ronald, saying "H-Hey Ronald, I gotta t-talk to you." Ronald nodded. "Yeah?" He said. Kid said "I appreciate you guys t-taking me to New Reno and all, b-but I want to g-go on, on my own."
Ronald nodded. "I understand, mate. But listen. We'll be around here for the next few days if you change your mind. You change your mind, just come find us. We'll be here." Kid nodded, thanking him. He began to slowly walk down the street. Mandy watched him quietly as he left. Kid looked around at all the buildings, slipping his pistol into the waistband of his boxers, under his pants. The handle stuck out of the front of his pants and to the side, the handle against the lower part of his stomach so he could easily and quickly grab it if need be. He wondered what he could do. He wondered what Dawn would have wanted to do with him. He looked to the ground a little darkly, but he couldn't help but feel a little depressed. She got so happy when she mentioned New Reno to him, he wanted to see what her reaction would have been like if they had entered New Reno together. He shook his head, walking down the street, looking around for something to do.
