Kenji had been sleeping at Uriko's house for almost a whole week. He was too ashamed to face Yugo or even give him a call. Uriko's mother, Mitsuko, had been very welcoming. Being a former national karate champion and now a bodybuilder, Mitsuko had a fearsome exterior, but her heart was made of gold. More importantly, she was a zoanthrope too – a werebear – and she had been through pretty much the same hell. Not only had she been kidnapped and used in experiments, her daughter had been brainwashed and used to kill people, just like Kenji had. Perhaps that's why Mitsuko never tried to pry out any details from the boy and simply accepted his vague explanation: that he had done something horrible and made Yugo very mad.
Uriko, however, was a different matter, even though she knew Kenji well enough to know he wouldn't tell her anything. Still, sheer persistence was one of her strongest qualities. Kenji was used to her shenanigans and didn't mind it very much, that's why he sometimes dropped his guard around her. Presently, he was seated on the ground with his back to a wall, studying for the upcoming tests. Uriko made a point of breaking his concentration every now and then, drawing annoyed looks.
"Hey, my mom already knows you're gay." Uriko said out of the blue in a matter-of-fact way.
"How does she know?!" He asked alarmed, immediately realizing his reaction had given him away anyway.
"I told her a couple of weeks ago." Uriko shrugged.
"Wait, you mean you already knew?!"
"Well, yeah, kinda of. I wasn't sure though."
"What do you mean? Explain." Kenji demanded with an annoyed tone.
"Well," Uriko started a little embarrassed, "the truth is I was going to confess to you, so I decided to follow you after school one day, since you never walked back home with me anymore, and then I saw you going to the deserted park with another guy and I kinda followed you, so..."
That explains it. But, more importantly, Kenji had been tailed without realizing it – he was getting sloppy. That was not acceptable.
"Okay, but that still doesn't explain how your honorable mother plays into the equation."
"Oh geez, you're so dense sometimes! I followed you because I wanted to confess my feelings, but then I saw you doing it with another guy! How do you think I felt?? I needed someone to talk to, that's why I told my mom!"
Kenji realized he had been insensitive. "...sorry you had to go through that. I intended to tell you sooner or later, but a lot of stuff happened."
"But, like, are you really gay? I mean, some people like both, right??" She asked with a glimmer of hope.
"Sorry, Uriko, I've never felt attracted to girls." Better to crush any illusions before they had a chance to take root.
"Okay, it was worth asking. Anyway, what do you like so much about guys?" Uriko asked, curious.
"For one, I think men are more simple-minded."
Uriko laughed through her nose. "Yeah, having Yugo as a role model, I can see where you're coming from!"
Looking at it this way, Kenji couldn't help but laugh a bit too.
"Well," he continued, "it's not just that. I really like the masculine build, especially strong, muscular guys."
"Like Yugo?!!" The girl teased again, but this time Kenji's face darkened, and Uriko realized she had unwittingly hit a chord.
For a moment, Kenji was at a loss. He was so tired of hiding and lying, but he couldn't just spill out the horrible truth. Or could he? Uriko had always stood by him. If she proved unable to take the truth, he would know that was the extent of their friendship.
"Uriko, look... yeah, just like Yugo. In fact, Yugo."
"Wait, what? ..." The girl was a moment absorbing this. "You mean you fell for Yugo?!!" She finally asked, incredulous.
Kenji just nodded and hid his face between the knees. Uriko shook her head.
"Oh boy, this is serious. Is that why Yugo is so mad at you?!"
"Yeah, I mean, no."
"Come on, make up your mind!"
"Well, I've... abused him while he was drunk."
"YOU WHAT!" She practically yelled.
"Well, I just sucked him, I didn't think he would take it so badly." Kenji said, trying to justify himself, and Uriko found herself partially agreeing with him – she had imagined something far worse.
"How did he react when he woke up?! Did he hit you? You sure as hell deserved it!"
"I wish he had." Kenji answered with a pained look.
"What did you tell him?!" Uriko pressed.
"Nothing. I couldn't say anything."
"Oh geez, so you didn't confess to him?!" Uriko's lack of common sense was one of her most reliable traits. She was the only person who would think about confessing under such circumstances. Kenji was perplexed.
"Of course not, how could I? He's straight, he's even dated your sister!" Kenji said dejectedly.
"Oh Kenji, don't be silly! That's no reason for you not to confess your feelings. Are you going to keep that bottled up all your life?!"
As much as Kenji hated to admit it, she did have a point. Bottling up his feelings was what had caused him to lose control in the first place. Still, it didn't change the fact that she was out of her mind.
"He's my brother, remember?!" Kenji said pointedly.
"If you really considered him your brother, you wouldn't have done that." Uriko said with an accusatory tone. "And, besides, you're not real brothers, so I think you're just making up excuses."
Uriko's bluntness was frankly offensive, but she was right again. It was uncanny how lack of common sense and great intuition could come together in one person. Kenji sighed.
"Uriko, how would you feel if some day Alice confessed to you out of nowhere?" Kenji asked. Alice was Uriko's adoptive sister, just like he was Yugo's adoptive brother. If that didn't get through her skull, nothing else would.
Uriko was a moment thinking, eyes looking at the ceiling before they returned to Kenji. "Well, I'd just say 'no thanks'."
"Uh? Just like that?" Kenji asked, a bit surprised at how easy it had been for Uriko to answer that.
"Yeah. Well, I mean, I'm not into girls, so I wouldn't be able to correspond her feelings. She would cry a few times and then move on. I mean, it's much better than brooding for god knows how long over a feeling that will never be."
Those words stabbed Kenji right into his heart, and suddenly it dawned on him just how afraid he was of receiving a 'no' from Yugo. Uriko, seemingly oblivious, continued:
"So, like, I think you have nothing to lose. If he says no, that's just the motivation you need to find someone else. Besides, you never know, there's always a chance of him saying yes. You just have to try and see what happens."
Kenji didn't like where this conversation was going, so he decided to end it. "Look, Uriko, I'm tired. Let's just go to bed, okay?"
"What, just like that? You haven't even promised me you'll confess your feelings!"
"Yeah, yeah, whatever," Kenji said and laid down on his futon, drawing the covers over himself.
"Geez, you're no fun!" Uriko complained in a peeved tone and got under her own futon, turning her back to Kenji.
It was a few hours before Kenji was finally able to sleep. He just couldn't stop reflecting on what Uriko had said, and he knew why: because she was right. Kenji had to choose between suppressing his feelings for Yugo – which had already failed once – or confessing to him, which would mean taking a very big risk. Yugo would freak out for certain after hearing a confession from his own brother, but the real problem was what might come after. Somewhere along the line, Kenji realized that the real question was how much he was willing to risk. If he decided to go down this path, their relationship would be changed forever – for better or worse. Would he risk losing everything for this unlikely dream? When Kenji asked himself that question, he sadly realized he already knew the answer. With his thoughts finally settled, Kenji fell into a deep, numbing sleep.
