Dante wakes up feeling refreshed, something he hasn't experienced since their mother was killed—a thought that he promptly shoves out of his mind—and, more importantly, happy.
Vergil is staying with him.
Vergil wants to stay with him.
Vergil wants him.
Sure, Vergil has some issues that they need to work through, like feeling like he doesn't deserve any of this, but Dante is more than willing to work through them with him. Even if it takes them the rest of their lives to get through this, they will do it together!
And speaking of Vergil, Dante shifts just enough in his brother's hold to look at him while he is still asleep. Only Vergil isn't sleeping at all! Instead, Dante is met with the sight of his brother watching him, his glowing crimson eyes just barely peeking out from under his pale lashes.
"Did you sleep well?" Vergil asks with the barest hint of amusement to his voice, and Dante settles for nodding. His answer seems to please his brother because Vergil purrs as he leans in and brushes his lips against Dante's forehead. "Good." And then he tightens the hold he has on Dante.
Dante lets out a little laugh and leans in to tuck his head back underneath Vergil's chin, content to just lay with him for a while longer. "And what about you?"
"I slept well," Vergil rumbles out, and he rubs his cheek against the top of Dante's head. The moment is quickly shattered by a bang, loud enough to reverberate throughout Devil May Cry, that comes from downstairs, and his brother immediately stiffens while a low, protective growl sounds deep in his chest.
Dante tries to pull away from Vergil, at the very least, to see who has decided to cause a ruckus in his shop, but Vergil's grip is decidedly firm for someone supposedly so close to death. "Lemme go see who that is, Verge," he reasons, only for Vergil's growl to grow louder in response. That's a definite no.
"Hey, Dante! You in?" A familiar voice calls out, and now it's Dante's turn to stiffen because it's Nero. Their son. Who should be in Fortuna right now. Not busting into his shop. Especially when it's been less than twenty-four hours since Vergil had shown up in said shop and doesn't even know that their son is alive and…well, just alive.
And Dante would be lying to himself if he doesn't admit that he's freaking out because he may very well have to spill the beans to Nero a lot sooner than he ever anticipated. This is another lie because he never intended to tell Nero the truth. And now here he is, with Nero banging down his door while Vergil very much doesn't want to let go of him.
"That's our son," he hisses out, hoping that the knowledge will be enough to make Vergil come to his senses, and it works…sorta.
Vergil's growling dies down, but his hold on Dante remains unyielding as he lifts his head and scents the air.
Dante tries to be patient, but Nero's weighted footsteps are traveling up the stairs now as he calls out for the Devil Hunter again, and it's not so much that he cares about being found in bed with his twin; rather, it's what Vergil might do if he decides that Nero is a threat. "Mate," he croons out softly, and Vergil peers down at him to show that he's listening. Good, he can work with this. "Our nestling."
Vergil's expression scrunches up slightly as he parses the words, and after a few precious seconds, his face smoothes out, and the hold he has on Dante loosens. Right in time for Nero to unceremoniously throw open the bedroom door. And Vergil promptly sends several spectral swords Nero's way without so much as batting an eyelash.
Nero lets out a rather undignified squawk, even though Dante knows that Vergil purposefully missed him with his summoned swords. It is not a blatant attack on their child. It's a warning.
"Knock next time," Vergil demands in a frosty voice, proving Dante right. Not that Nero will know. Yet.
"The fuck?!"
Dante hides his face against Vergil's throat as a few more spectral swords are sent Nero's way, and he doesn't know if he wants to laugh or cry in response. It's obvious what Vergil is doing, at least to him, but he should probably make his brother stop because Nero will not understand. "Stop it, Vergil! He doesn't know anything!"
That certainly grabs Vergil's attention, and he forces Dante to back up enough to glower down at him. "What do you mean he doesn't know anything, Dante?" And there it is, that perfectly smooth and icy voice clipped in a way that Dante hasn't heard since Temen-ni-Gru.
"I'd like to know what the fuck is going on, and what is it that I'm supposed to know?" Nero interjects from the doorway; his voice edged with anger and curiosity. "Also, who are you?"
"Uh… Can we take this downstairs?" Dante asks meekly, and he shrinks in on himself as Vergil's glare intensifies.
