They had arrived at Jackie’s home, he signaled for V to keep quiet as surely his mother was asleep. Moving quietly, Jackie guided V to a spare room “Ain’t much” he says with a hushed tone “But you can crash here, you can drop your stuff here, we still got running water if you wanna shower, and if you’re hungry we can go downstairs and get you something to eat” V looks at Jackie, genuinely thankful, but the stress of the day had finally gotten to her “Thank you, Jackie, I mean it… But I think I’m gonna crash, I’m exhausted” Jackie nods “Oh, yeah sure V don’t worry, I should get some shuteye too, talk to you in the morning” with that, he leaves the room and quietly closes the door behind him. V was so exhausted, she simply crashed on the bed and immediately fell asleep.
A few hours later, a strange smell woke her up. The sun was already up and as she got her bearings, the smell just made her stomach grumble. She figured this was Jackie’s mom’s famous chile con carne he had mentioned the night before. Trying to make a decent first impression, she sneaked into the shower and changed into her least revealing outfit which was a challenge in itself.
Heading downstairs, she says Jackie already sitting at the table “Mornin’ bella durmiente! Come, come, grab a seat!” Jackie stands and pulls up a chair for V, and he immediately approaches his mother hugging her from behind “Mamá, mira, this is my new friend V, she saved my life last night! V, this is my mom” Jackie’s mother was unique, she was shorter than average, and she had a stern face but kind eyes as V goes for a handshake, Jackie’s mother went instead for a very warm hug “Mija! Thank you for saving Jaquito’s life, he told me everything! Pero siéntate! Have a seat, you must be hungry!” V was stunted for a couple of seconds before she sits down, Jackie had a wide grin on his face, she leans towards him whispering “What exactly did you tell her?” she asks slightly concerned “Well, everything!” he exclaims “You don’t understand V, you can’t keep secrets from Guadalupe Alejandra Welles, she will always find out in the end!” V just smiled as Mamá Welles produces a plate filled almost to the brim with chile con carne, V blinks “It’s… it’s too much” Mamá Welles scoffs “Oh no you don’t! You need to eat! A pretty girl like you with those curves! A comer! La cerveza is comin’ right up!” Jackie chuckles looking at V “Can’t win an argument against mi mamá, V”.
V had eaten breakfast and she had to admit she hadn’t eaten something that tasty in a while, she had also noticed that Mamá Welles had been looking at her all the time, not in a bad way, and seemed more curious than anything. But V didn’t know if this was a good thing or not.
“So, mija” Mamá Welles says, “Jaquito told me you’re not from around here, will you be staying?” V finishes her beer and nods “That’s the plan, my family’s not around anymore, so I’m on my own. I met Jackie on a job and he told me he could hook me up” Mamá Welles smiles looking at Jackie and then punches him on the shoulder “Ow! What did I do!?” Mamá Welles went from peaceful and kind to angry in less than a second, V was visibly confused “Cómo que qué hiciste!? Don’t you have a girlfriend cabrón!? Why are you trying to seduce this nice girl!? What, isn’t one enough?”
V understood what was going on and while Mamá Welles was still hitting Jackie, she tried to intervene “No, no, Mamá Welles, you got it all wrong, I told Jackie I wasn’t looking for a relationship, and he told me he had a girlfriend, I promise this is nothing more” Mamá Welles seemed appeased but she still glared at her son “I’m watching you, cabrón, watch it” the mental image of a middle-aged lady pummeling Jackie while he’s twice her size was an amusing one to V, but she also noticed that Mamá Welles was no one to mess with.
She finally stands up and looks at V “Well, in that case, welcome to Night City mija, I know what you do and how dangerous it is, just watch out for yourself alright? Jackie, I need to go to the bar, Pepe has the day off” Jackie stands up afterward “Don’t you worry mamá, I’ll deal with the dishes” Mamá Welles approaches Jackie and motions for him to lean, she kisses him on the forehead “I’ll see you later mijo”. V realized the kind of family they were and smiled to herself. As Mamá Welles left, Jackie headed towards the sink “That’s my mom, meanest little lady you’ll ever meet” V smirked, approaching to help him with the dishes “And the kindest too” Jackie smiled “Yeah, the kindest too” even with a simple task like taking care of the dishes, V and Jackie seemed to have a natural chemistry and were done with the dishes in no time at all.
Once they were done, Jackie looks at V “So, what do you wanna do today?” she stretched, looking at Jackie “I dunno, maybe a tour? I’ll also like to look into getting some jobs going, don’t wanna smooch off of you and your mom, y’know?” Jackie scoffs, waving off her concerns “Bah, you’re my friend V, you can stay with us for as long as you like! But well, I suppose let’s get you started with some tours, if you’re gonna be a badass merc in Night City, the least you can do is get to know your territory, c’mon V!”
* * *
V got to know Night City and most of its culture. She learned about its conception and the mysterious death of its founder, Richard Night. She also understood that unlike most cities she knew, there were only three kinds of people: Homeless and fucked, fucked, and corpos. And even the corpos could be fucked themselves sometimes. It was a city that stood on its own in many ways, with a myriad of cultures that were so different, yet had found common ground to coexist with one another, and that even applied to its people. But most importantly, V learned that Night City was a city of contrasts and contradictions. For every successful “from rags to riches” story, there are also a hundred stories of people who took their shot and failed. For every Morgan Blackhand, there are hundreds of would-be solos gunned down in back alleys. For every Johnny Silverhand, there are hundreds of rockerboys spewing the same rhetoric over and over again, becoming generic and forgotten. And for every Spider Murphy and Rache Bartmoss, there are hundreds of amateur script kiddies who end up dead on their net chair with their brains fried or their consciousness lost to the Blackwall. And of course, for every Saburo Arasaka, there were millions and millions of middle to low-level corpo execs whose bodies paved his path to success.
But V was built differently, she wouldn’t become a legend following in someone else’s steps, she didn't want to be 'the next someone else', she wanted to be the first V, and if she had her way, the only one too. She tried to absorb as much knowledge as she could, but she also itched to experience the city in all its neon-colored glory.
In time, V knew the city enough that she could traverse it on her own, and even knew a few shortcuts whenever she and Jackie were chasing down a mark. They made a name for themselves in Heywood, and Padre, the local fixer, would usually go to them whenever he needed someone retrieved and brought to him, or straight up taken care of.
After a month of taking jobs for Padre, she finally was able to afford her own ride, her first impulse was to get something that a nomad would get, but she didn’t expect to go back to the Badlands, at least not just yet, she ended up getting a second hand Archer Hella EC-D i360. The name just rolled off the tongue. It wasn’t the most high-quality car, but it was easy for her to fix and add a few improvements here and there. She was now finally able to take jobs with Jackie beyond Heywood and soon expanded to places like Watson, Westbrook, and the Corpo Plaza as well.
Every day was almost the same: Pick up a new contract from a fixer, get the job done, get paid, party in a different bar every night, get fucked in more than one way, and spend the following morning nursing the hangover. For V and Jackie, this was life, and Jackie was having the time of his life too. Really taking in being a reputable merc. V also met Misty, Jackie’s girl and she took a liking to her. Misty was what could only be described as a gothified hippie who ran her own business: Misty’s Esoterica. V also got to meet Jackie’s ripperdoc, a former boxer by the name of Viktor Vektor. An expert in implants with several medical degrees and a passion for pugilism with a clinic in Watson, hidden behind Misty’s Esoterica.
As the contracts keep coming in, their reputation grew and they would find themselves working on occasion with T-Bug, a reclusive netrunner who offered them remote assistance on their jobs. Whenever a contract seemed to be high risk, she was always the third member of the party.
And finally, five months in, V had scrounged enough credits to get her own place. A decent apartment in Megabuilding H10, while it wasn’t exactly the most luxurious location, it beat living in places like Rancho Coronado or Santo Domingo. In Megabuilding H10 she met Coach Fred, a boxing coach who took a liking to V’s developing taste for boxing. And Robert Wilson, who held a 2nd Amendment franchise. Of course, V’s home’s location was fortunate, she could get guns and ammo, as well as melee weapons in the same building she lived in, and the ripperdoc was just a few blocks away.
Six months had passed and she was already settled in, she was playing the game, and it was just a matter of time before she made it to the top with Jackie.
