The sputtering of the old titan creation died down rather quickly after they started, the blue lights fading as it powered down. Kyli sighed as she rested a hand over the ancient machine, pressing down on the large oval object on top once more. Immediately starting back up, the machine began projecting a thin beam of light at the wall behind it. She could hear the gears and workings inside of it beginning to turn once more as the beam widened, displaying a large screen on the wall. The hologram shimmered and jerked out of its original form several times before the pale blue light began to show something. Several snowflakes flew by the point of view of the screen, the image bouncing as if it were riding atop a multi-legged being. In front of it rested the might towers of the ancient titans, covered in layers of snow and ice. Several other spider-like constructs patrolled on various ledges on the towers, some being ridden by mecha-gnomes, others following close behind them. A red beam flew into the air to the right of the machine, the image immediately turning and focusing on it. The Beam separated from the ground and flew into the air, bursting into several trails of light. They vanished moments later, but the being the machine was riding atop of made a dash from where the beam originated. The snow on the ground began to thin as the construct descended a stairway, spotting the source of the disturbance. The first thing focused on was a large panther sprinting at a mecha-gnome, who was busy initiating his hand-held rocket defenses. The panther leapt, driving the mecha-gnome to the ground, several sparks flying from underneath from the metal to stone contact. The panther swung one paw down, several the mecha-gnome’s head from its torso, the light blue light in its eyes dying to a dull grey. Another spider construct raced toward the panther while it searched for another target, preparing an attack when a blur of motion took it off its legs, rocketing it several feet to its left. The construct focused on the projectile; a black shafted arrow, driven into the spider’s processor core. Turning to its left, the machine caught sight of an elf, covered in black mail armor, wielding a bow that moved at impressive speeds. Arrow after arrow was sent into constructs, yet their numbers seemed limitless as they poured out of stairways and holes in the towers. The camera shifted briefly downward, and suddenly moved much closer to the ground as its carrier left the spider construct. The war machine scurried off toward the elf, intent on destroying the intruder. The camera turned downwards once more, looking at the wrist of a mecha-gnome. Pressing various buttons at blinding speeds, the mecha-gnome pointed its arm toward the elf, firing three separate rockets toward her. Just before the rockets made contact, a barrier erected itself around the elf, shielding her to the point that she didn’t notice the rockets she had been spared from. The machine turned to the right, spotting another figure standing above the battlefield. A human male, wearing strange white garments, hands covered in swirling white magic. The mecha-gnome readied its rockets once more, aiming his wrist toward the human when a flicker of movement made it turn its head. The machine was knocked backward several yards before facing the sky. Several moments passed as the snowflakes danced above it, covering half of its screen before a figure moved into sight. It was the human, having taken his mask off. He was grinning as he picked up the machine from the mecha-gnome, holding it up to his eye. He pulled it away, laughing, as he called the elf over. She looked at it curiously holding it to her ear as she shook it back and forth. The human snatched it from her hands, still laughing as he kissed her on the cheek. Summoning his pouch, he tapped the machine before setting it inside, the screen going dark. The hologram began to shrink as the sputtering started up once more, the blue lights on the machine dying. Kyli rested her fingertips against it, tracing the oval on top before walking away, sighing. How long has it been…? Emyth came out of the kitchen holding a tray with two plates on it, steam rising from them both. She paused as she watched Kyli walk toward the window, gazing outside. Setting the tray down on the table, Emyth walked behind her friend, wrapping her arms around her waist. Kyli placed a hand atop Emyth’s, raising her head to look back out into the night. “He’ll be back.” Emyth said quietly. “I know.” Kyli replied, sighing. “I just don’t know who he will be when he does.” Emyth placed her hands on Kyli’s shoulders, turning her around to face her. “Don’t be silly… He’ll still be Altius. He’ll be your son. This won’t change who he is.” Kyli hesitated before nodding. “I can only hope so…” Emyth waved one hand toward the table, smiling. “Come, no need to starve yourself. He’ll be fine.” Altius clutched at his stomach, uselessly trying to quell the growls coming from it. Elara brought her hands to her hips, raising an eyebrow. “Hungry already?” Altius gritted his teeth, standing up once more. “Yea… we’ve been going since sunset, and if I’m right about the time…” he paused, looking at the moon, which was currently hanging just behind his head. “It’s been 8 hours since. Aren’t you?” Elara responded by quickly conjuring a magic attack in her hand, the condensed energy rocketing towards him. Inches from his face, he flicked his wrist upward, his sword cutting through it easily. It barely made a pause in his already ragged breathing. Elara smiled. “Yes, I think you’re ready for a break.” Altius sat down cross-legged on the grass, resting his hands on his knees as he tried to calm his breathing. Whatever Elara’s idea of a second trail was never seemed to end, and he had lost count of how many bruises and cuts he had to heal through. The worst part was, she never told him what the object of the second trail was, and had just begun attacking him. He could feel that she was going easy on him, but he was using every trick and fighting technique he knew, even a few he made up on the spot, just to stay alive. He looked up at a slight rustling, seeing Elara to be sitting down in front of him, only a foot or two away. Cupping her hands together, a pale blue light began to grow out of her palm. It quickly enveloped her hands, growing large enough to encompass her and Altius himself. Strangely, his vision inside of the sphere seemed opposite, darkness being light and light being dark. It was gone before he had time to think about it though, and as his vision returned to normal he realized he was sitting on a common picnic blanket, a basket resting between him and Elara. She opened the lid closest to him, smiling. “Eat up.” Altius reached in, the first thing he pulled out to be a small loaf of bread. He instinctively tore it in half, offering a piece to Elara. She shook her head, still smiling. “Oh no, this is for you.” He looked at her curiously, still holding half of the loaf out to her. “You don’t want any? You haven’t eaten anything since we started either.” “I know.” she said simply, leaving it at that. Altius looked at the loaf in his hands uncertainly before bringing them both before himself. He studied them for a moment before looking at Elara. “Can I ask you something?” Elara nodded, giggling softly. “You just did.” Altius rolled his eyes before assuming a serious look. “Why are you helping me?” Elara shrugged slightly. “You needed help, any person would.” “No, not everyone would.” Altius said, tilting his head. “And not nearly this much. This is far beyond a little helping hand.” Elara smiled, looking off to her right. “Hmm… You never seemed to be the inquisitive type before all this…” “What-” Altius was cut off by a very audible growl coming from his stomach. Elara laughed softly, gesturing towards the basket.
