You had been living with Vergil for over three weeks now and it had been nearly as long since you'd heard any news from your father. The only sign that he was actually still alive were the ever faithful payments still being wired to Vergil's account. You kept telling yourself not to worry, and that there had to be some reasonable explanation as to why he didn't at least call. Deep down, however, worry was gnawing away at you. Bit by bit.
As the days passed, it seemed like Vergil was intentionally avoiding you. More and more he would have to "go out" or "run an errand", leaving you in the care of Dante or Lady. And, when he was home, he'd retreat to his bedroom, where you weren't allowed. There hadn't been anymore attempts on your life, but the lack there of was beginning to make you uneasy. What if they -whoever they might be- were gearing up for some especially devastating attack? This thought was the main culprit, the cause of your increasingly sleepless nights. And, Vergil hadn't been giving you the time of day. Really, it wasn't as if you could ask him about anything. He'd likely refuse to tell you anything anyhow, what with the way he'd been behaving towards you lately.
You were beginning to wonder if you'd done something unforgivable without realizing it.
Such as it was tonight. Lady left after bidding you a fond farewell, the two of you had become official friends. Vergil nodded at you then proceeded down the hallway.
"Wait a minute," You call.
Vergil stops but he doesn't turn around. "Yes?"
"Is there, I mean... Did I do something to anger you?"
He glanced back over his shoulder, "If you had, I'd have no problem letting you know."
Oh. You blink uncertainly. "So, do I smell or something then?"
This time he turns around and narrows his eyes at you. Making a show of sniffing the air in front of himself, he replies in a mildly sarcastic tone. "Currently, you smell of soap and some sort of body-lotion. So, in a word, yes. You smell. Is it an offensive smell? No. It isn't."
You widen your eyes, "You can smell me from way over there?"
"Yes."
"Yikes." You swallow nervously. "Can you hear my thoughts too?"
You meant it to be a humorous query but he doesn't crack even the slightest smile. "No. Though, I don't imagine I'm missing much."
"How would you know? You haven't given me the time of day. You know shit about me, Devil-boy." Borrowing Lady's nickname for them, you allow your tone to become sharp and defensive. And to think, you'd thought you'd been making some headway on the Vergil front.
Vergil tilts his head slightly then walks over to where you're sitting. Taking a seat on the chair opposite you, he regards you with those cold, cold eyes. "I know more about you than you think, little human."
"I have a name, you know. And, like hell you do." You tuck your legs under yourself and begin testily yanking on a lock of hair.
"Again, I know what your name is," he said, swiping a hand back through his hair. "And I know that you have a big mouth that you use far too often."
"Yeah? Well you're not much better-"
He continues as if you'd never interrupted, blue eyes focused intently on your own. "I know that you have a strange obsession with French Toast and that you frequently download pirated software by leeching off of the neighbor's connection. Every morning you sing in the shower and every night you talk in your sleep. You see? Even when you're unconscious, you won't shut-up. Moving along, you also have developed the irritating tendency to question every single thing that I do and/or say."
You shrug, "I'm a curious person. What can I say?"
He glowers, "When agitated or in deep thought, you play with your hair. When angry or upset, you lash out without thinking. Like you did when you first arrived and I told you of your mother's death. Recall? Something tells me that you still have no clue of how close I was to harming you that evening. Ignorance must truly be bliss. Perhaps I shouldn't have held back, it would certainly have saved me a plethora of tiresome headaches thus far."
You cross your arms sullenly and jut your chin out, wondering what had him in such a bad mood. Granted, this was the most conversation that he'd ever initiated on his own. And you were a bit taken aback at just how much he had observed about you. "So, you're a stalker as well. Why am I not surprised?"
"Why do you do that?" He demanded. This time, you were certain that his eyes brightened. For a moment, they took on a glowing green hue. A chill traced its way down your spine.
"Do what?"
"Taunt me. Challenge me. It's maddening." His angry expression melted into one of sincere puzzlement. "Not to mention dangerous."
"Because, you do the same to me."
"I am stronger than you, though."
"So what?"
"So... So..." Vergil's brow creased again. "So, it's just foolish. Have you any idea of what I could do to you if I so chose?"
"Yeah." Slowly, the bands of worried tension around your chest were loosening. You realized that he wasn't angry at you, he was confused.
"Then why do you continue to bait me?" His expression gave way to frustration.
"It's what I do." You offer him your patented Sweet Smile.
"And that!" He pointed at you. "That infuriating smile. You only smile like that when you're deliberately attempting to get a rise out of me."
"I do it because I think it's cute when you get that wide-eyed 'how dare she' expression. You're not used to people not giving way before you, are you."
"Shut-up."
"No. I won't. In fact, I think you like it when I push your buttons."
Vergil sits back and narrows his eyes again. "And what pray-tell gives you that idea?"
You uncurl your legs and stretch them before you answer. As you did so, you notice his eyes flick down briefly to track your movements. "Well, I figure you'd have killed me by now. Or, at the very least, cut out my tongue with Yamato."
"I wouldn't sully my blade with your blood."
A grin. "Good. Just one less thing for me to worry about then."
"Very amusing, brat."
You nod. "Yup. And, ya know? I think I actually do amuse you. To a point, anyhow. Which also might be a reason why you haven't hurt me. Yet. Though," you trail off thoughtfully, pondering whether or not it was wise to take this conversation in the direction you were tempted to take it. "I always did have a bit of a penchant for pain."
"..."
"And, I think I like it when you call me a brat. Turns me on." Alright, that was a bit bold, but you were unable to resist.
Vergil tugged at his collar and averted his eyes momentarily. You watch as that slight tinge of pink appeared on his cheeks once more.
Bingo, you thought. Your smile grew into a grin. Vergil Sparda; The Dark Slayer, Death Incarnate, and Serious Bad Dude, was shy.
"So. Did I answer thoroughly enough for you?" You ask, wondering if your innuendos had been too much.
For a moment, he merely regarded you with hooded lids and you feel a fleeting wave of fear wash over you. "You did." He finally replied. "And I will remember every single thing you've said to me this evening. You can bet on it. Brat."
Something in his voice made your heart speed up and sent adrenaline rushing unpleasantly through your body. Whether it was from fear or something else, you were unable to discern. All you knew for certain was that now, you were the one with the pink cheeks.
Slowly, the corner of his mouth curled up into the smirk you already knew so well. Perhaps he sensed the change in your attitude. "Your heart is beating much more quickly now. I wonder why that is?" He stands and takes a step towards you.
You swallow and press yourself back into the sofa cushions.
"It's late and we've got places to go tomorrow," he went on, still smirking down at you.
"Where are we-"
"You'll find out soon enough. Go to bed. Get some sleep. If, of course, you still feel safe enough to sleep around me, that is."
Yeah. It was definitely fear. You could feel it clearly now. "Ah, w-why wouldn't I-"
"You like to challenge me? Fine. Challenge accepted."
Uh-oh. Had you inadvertently challenged him to something? If so, what-
"No response? Really? That's a first. Curious. I wonder... Perhaps, if I found some other use for your mouth, I could have peace and quiet for the duration of your visit. What do you think?" For the first time, a large grin stretched across his lips.
Pink cheeks? Nope. Now they were red. Rose-red. And you still were unable to think of anything to say. And... and... He looked wonderful when he smiled like that.
"I must say, I believe I've found a way to keep you in line." Amused triumph was clear in his tone. "Go to bed, little human, and do think long and hard about what I've told you tonight. Pleasant dreams."
With that, he turns and strides down the hallway, without another look back. After a moment, you hear him close the door to his bedroom.
