Fallout: Life In The Wasteland
Part 2 - "Sin & Vice"

Kid walked down Virgin Street, heading deeper into New Reno, almost like he was sleepwalking. After a good thirty to fourty minutes of walking, he found himself on Second Street. A few black men to his right sang an old blues tune over a trashed oil barrel. To his left, he spotted a large building with a glowing neon sign on the front, saying Golden Globes Porn in golden light. Between the three words were two large half-spheres sticking out from the wall, the middle of each having a pinpoint of golden light, Kid realizing after a moment that they resembled breasts. A few junkies loitered outside the studio, an armed guard standing by the door with a small uzi. A few people walked inside, silly grins on their perverted faces. A few prostitutes in their dirty rags for clothes all hung around as well, calling out to potential johns, a few of them insulting those that didn't pay attention to them.
One woman remarked rather crudely to a man, the man losing his temper at her insult and rushing over to her, knife in hand. The girl's pimp materialized at her scream like a phantom. The man tried running, the pimp raising a pistol, firing at him five times in rapid succession. He hit the man in the back twice, the pimp quickly walking over to the still-living man, shooting him in the back of the head as he lay bleeding out on the cement. The man quickly checked him for items before returning to his girl. Kid saw another large building to his right, a metallic sign on the front with blue neon lettering, saying "Jungle Gym". Between the words was a large metallic structure that stuck out of the sign, looking like a long barbell made of pure metal. Down the street, he saw another large casino, named the Shark Club, the sign on the front being of huge, lit-up letters. The "H" of "Shark" was totally dead, not being lit up at all, the "L" of "club" being a little loose and slanted as well as only being partially lit-up.
Walking down the street a little, he saw another establishment across from the Shark Club, with a sign made of neat cursive-written neon letters, naming it Salvatore's Bar. Kid took in a slow, deep breath through his nose, wondering what he should do. What would Dawn have wanted to do? He looked to the ground for a moment before he heard footsteps approach him from the side. "Hey baby, looking for a fun time?" Kid looked over. It was a tall woman with deep, tanned skin, a broad smile on her face. She was dressed in a tight, dirty red dress. Kid shook his head. "S-Sorry, no." He said. The girl shrugged gently and said "Always worth a shot. Most boys your age are usually dying to get some pussy. Oh well." Kid watched her walk away for another moment or two before he looked forward. The sign of the Shark Club drew in his eyes. He slowly began to walk towards it, wondering if he could get another bottle of Cherry Nuka-Cola there.
Another minute or two walking later, and Kid had walked into the Shark Club. The first room was large and rather spacious, filled with both craps tables and pre-war slot machines. The room was filled with the cheers and groans of winners and losers, respectively. A large door in a nearby wall led to another room, which Kid walked through after another moment of looking around. A voice instantly reached his ears over the general din of murmurs from patrons. "...And did you hear that there are rumours about yellow-skinned super mutants to the south? Yeah, it's true! Apparently they're running amok in the D.C. ruins or something. I don't know about you guys, but I find it kind of hard to believe that anyone is actually afraid of something like looks like it's made of piss, heh heh." Kid smirked slightly as a heckler called out from the crowd. "They're probably scared of it because it's like eight-hundred pounds and wants to tear them in half, you stupid fucktard!"
A few people laughed at the heckler's remark. Kid looked over finally. A man sweating profusely with a nervous smile stood in a small fenced-in area of flooring, facing a large crowd of people seated at several tables. It seemed like he was a comedian of sorts. In the fenced-in area, Kid could see two large doors, probably leading to a backstage-like area. To the right, there was a long bar set up, a man with balding hair and glasses serving drinks and taking caps, also selling items that looked like they must have been some form of drug. Kid only watched them all for a few moments, but the one he saw most often being sold was the same item he had seen Ace use, Jet. Several guards and bouncers stood around. A staircase stood nearby, shadowed away in a corner. The staircase went upwards, and another one located just behind and beneath it went downwards. A pair of armed guards stood by the upwards staircase. Kid walked over to the bar, quickly getting the bartender's attention.
"What'll it be, man?" The bartender asked. Kid asked "D-Do you guys have any Cherry N-Nuka-Cola?" The man gave Kid a curious look before smiling. "Cherry Nuka-Cola? Why would you even want that crap? That stuff sucked, heard it nearly put the company that makes 'em broke too because it sucked so hard. I got normal Nuka-Cola if you want, but I think I have a few bottles of Classic Nuka-Cola kicking around, too." Kid thought to himself that the Cherry Nuka-Cola didn't taste so bad, it was alright. "I g-guess I'll just have a C-Classic Nuka-Cola, then." He said. The bartender nodded, reaching underneath the counter. He came back up a few moments later with a tall, slim, glass bottle filled with a dark fluid. The cap on the top was a golden yellow. In the middle of the bottle, three golden words stuck out of the bottle as a form of a label, saying "Classic Nuka-Cola". The bartender rested it on the top of the bar, saying "That'll be three caps." Kid realized that he didn't have any money on him. The bartender looked at him with an eyebrow raised. Kid's mind was racing.
There were a lot of people with guns in the casino, but there were a lot of innocent people, too. Maybe he could take the drink and run? That might stir up shit for him in New Reno, though...He'd never be able to return to this casino, certainly. In the din and roar of the casino's patrons, Kid began to come up with a quick plan. The bartender said "Dude, you got three caps, or what?" Someone suddenly began to scream that they got a jackpot. Kid grabbed the bottle and ran, heading through the large open doors to the first room. The bartender began to shout out "Thief! Thief!!" A bouncer ran into the first room, seeing the woman in the first room that had screamed about her getting a jackpot. The bartender raised up a shotgun, pointing it into her face. She instantly stopped screaming, looking fearfully at the man. "I take it then that I don't get to keep my winnings?" She asked a little nervously. Kid made his way out the doors to the casino, running down a nearby street. He ducked into a nearby alley, peeking around the corner back into the street for a moment, seeing that nobody had followed him. He sighed with a grin, his heart beating a little quickly, reaching up and twisting the cap off the bottle, slipping it into his pocket.
He was about to raise the bottle to his lips to take a swig when he suddenly became aware of someone slowly walking towards him from the side, from within the alley. He looked over. A filthy person dressed in dirty rags slowly approached him with a limp. "Spare a cap, sir?..." He asked, quickly followed by a cough. Kid looked along the man for a moment with pity before reaching into his pocket, grabbing the cap he had just placed there. He flicked it towards the man, who surprisingly enough, caught it. He held it for just a moment before muttering "A single cap?...A whole, single, cap?...One motherfucking cap?!...." Kid narrowed his eyes, his free hand straying to his pistol tucked into his waistband. The junkie suddenly raced towards him, slamming Kid's back into the brick wall behind him, nearly forcing him to drop his drink. The man had a shiv in his hand, his wild and almost feral-looking eyes staring into Kid's. "I'm sure you got more on ya! Hand 'em over before I spill your guts!"
He looked like he was about to pull the shiv back to stab Kid in the stomach before Kid forced himself into action, pulling out his pistol, aiming it at the junkie, firing a single shot into his stomach. The junkie's eyes went wide as he stumbled backwards. He let out a pained gasp, looking down to his stomach. "You shot me!" The junkie said in a pained voice. Smoke slowly leaked out of the barrel of his pistol, floating upwards gently. Kid looked at the junkie with a hard, yet regretful, face. He turned and began to walk away when he heard the junkie suddenly let out a growl of rage, running towards Kid once more. Kid spun around, raising his pistol at head-level, his finger on the trigger. He saw the junkie charging at him. Shots rang out, but they weren't from Kid's pistol. A good six bullets hit the junkie in the side of the body, his body doing a small twist to the side before collapsing to the ground near Kid's feet. Kid glanced down at the body of the junkie before looking down the street to see whoever it was that had fired at the junkie. His eyes went a little wide as he gazed along her face. It was Dawn.
She looked at him with a relieved face, smoke gently rolling out of the end of her mp5, Dawn lowering her arms, having held her weapon with both hands to steady her aim while she fired it. She stood there in her metallic combat armour, in all her beauty. Kid raised his pistol towards her. The very sight of her again put hot, stinging tears in his eyes. Wasted junkies and prostitutes, sharks with dolphin smiles and pimps alike all stared at them from the sidewalks, all expecting a fight, or at the very least, a show. Dawn's eyes went a little wide as Kid pointed his pistol at her. "Kid...I followed you, I've been looking for you every since you left-" Kid's voice was loud and free of stuttering as he nearly yelled at her. "Why did you do it, Dawn? What did Ace do? She was our friend! She helped us!" Dawn slowly and calmly, albeit with a sad face, said "Kid, look around you, we're both surrounded by junkies, the guy that attacked you probably wanted his next fix, and I promise you, all of these people, they might dabble in other chems, but their main chem of choice is Jet...Ace might have turned out like them, maybe not, but chances are she would have...I wasn't willing to take the chance that she could get violent."
Kid felt a tear roll down his face as he furiously said "So what if she became a damn junkie? She was still someone we..." He gulped, his emotions making the action send throbbing pain in his throat. "...She was still someone we could trust!" Dawn took a step closer to him. "Kid, you don't know everything, I've been around, hell, I lived in New Reno for a few years...I've seen Jet turn good people into fucking trash!...By my guess, it's got about a fifty-percent chance of causing addiction in anyone that takes it. Ace might have gotten addicted, maybe not, but like I said, it turns good people bad...If she got addicted, she'd want more and more, and if she thought she could pawn off our stuff for enough caps for another fix, it'd just be a matter of time until she did!...She'd kill us for money, Kid!...I wasn't about to let her hurt you!" Kid was clenching his teeth so hard that they hurt. More painful tears went down his face. He felt pulling the trigger, his emotions told him to, but every single part of his brain screamed at him not to. He dropped his drink, the soda spilling onto the partially-destroyed concrete beneath his feet, the bottle cracking slightly at the base upon impact with the ground.
A soft wind blew through the street. Kid lowered his other arm, slowly loosening his tight grip on his pistol, dropping it to the ground with a clack. Dawn looked along his face for any tells of emotion. He raised a hand to his face, letting out a dignified sniffle, wiping away any tears he had, but they just kept coming. His memories of her were flooding his mind. His tears filled him with shame. She slowly began to walk towards him, Kid standing still and looking to the ground for a few more moments before looking up to her face. She smiled gently. He realized she actually had tears in her eyes, too. The sight of her crying as well lessened his feelings of shame. He took a step closer to her. She took that as a sign that he was fine with her coming near, Dawn letting a small smile flash on her face, quickly walking closer to him, throwing her arms around his shoulders in a tight, loving hug, Kid reaching his arms around her hips, hugging her back. The pimps and hookers all smiled a little. The sharks all walked away, finding another place to prowl. Even the junkies, if a little more tuned in with reality than others like themselves, smiled. Kid couldn't help but let out a soft sob. Dawn was biting her bottom lip to stop it from trembling. She rubbed along Kid's shoulder blades with one hand, stroking the back of his head with her other. She whispered that everything would be fine, that she was with him again...
It took the both of them half an hour to totally calm down. Dawn told Kid that she knew of a place for the two of them to stay the night. Kid nodded, feeling sleepy after the day's ordeals, Dawn also feeling rather drained after her search for him. Grabbing his pistol once more, the two locked their free hands together, keeping one another close. "Wh-Where are we going?..." Kid asked softly, stuttering softly once more. Dawn smiled at him. "The Golden Globes studio, I'm friends with the owner there, he'll set us up with a room for the night, trust me." Kid looked to the ground. "...I walked by th-that place when I first got on S-Second Street....Don't they make p-porn there?..." Kid wasn't sure what porn was, but he knew by the looks on all the people's face outside it that it was surely something to do with a wanting of some kind, a yearning. Dawn nodded slowly, glancing to the ground for a moment. She smiled at him. "Long story. How's about I explain it all before we go to bed tonight? I'd rather not do it right now..." Kid nodded gently. "Okay..." He said gently. Dawn looked over at him and smiled. Kid didn't look at her for a few moments, finally looking over into her eyes and saying "Wh-What is it?..."
Dawn smiled more, saying "Oh, nothing, just thinking that I really can't wait to get you alone, I've missed you, you know...But we're in public, so..." Kid felt a little brave. "D-Don't let that s-stop you..." He said with a bit of a smile. Dawn looked over at him with raised eyebrows and a smile bordering on a grin. She stopped walking. Kid kept looking into her eyes. Still holding one of his hands, she came closer to him, closing her eyes, raising her other hand to the side of his face, to his jaw. She gently touched the tips of her fingers to his jaw and throat as she pressed a passionate kiss to his lips, Kid drawing in her scent for the first time in days. He had missed it. He hadn't realized it consciously, but he had missed it. He kissed her back, feeling lost at her touch, feeling back in the safe arms of a beautiful angel. They kissed a few more times gently before Dawn slowly began to move away from him. She smiled at him happily. "That's all for now...Come on, let's go..." Kid nodded with a happy smile, the two of them walking off down the street again, still having a hand holding one of the other's as they moved.
