"Call for a priest," Kael'thas' voice came low and measured, where clearly he strained for composure; there had been an unexpected attack on the Temple that day, which had penetrated the outer fortifications and left barren a moderate expanse of the foundation.
Vashj and her naga had been first to take charge and had ultimately fended the attack, but for his own part Illidan had been injured worse than the lot of them; his scars from Icecrown some time before still hadn't fully healed.
This time he’d completely forbid Kael'thas from tending to him and was largely in a foul mood— but even Kael'thas had felt it: there had been something different about this attack.
He remained pensively at the chamber leading to Illidan's quarters and saw to it that a priest had come to care for Master, but he badly wanted a word with him, himself; the sort of force he'd felt that day was not quite like anything he'd known before.
"It's all right, Al'ar," he crooned softly to his beloved phoenix, the large bird rested his head in Kael's lap while they waited, where Kael gently stroked his radiant plumage; he'd been terribly startled earlier during the attacks, and had gone into hiding beneath the stairs that led to the prince’s bedchamber.
Al’ar had been gifted to Kael'thas by his father years ago, in the context of Anasterian's hope that his son would benefit from the responsibility of caring for an animal; unexpectedly, Kael had developed a far deeper fondness for his bird than his father foresaw, and had cared for him with greater attention than he’d shown most other duties.
He isn’t a mere bird, Father, Kael had said; Al’ar is a phoenix god.
He was a fantastically radiant creature who stood in vivid contrast to the Temple’s shadowy twilight, though Kael had wished at times that he could allow him proper freedom to fly outside the building; "What should we do with you?" he’d asked him tenderly, "Shall we have you brought back to Quel’thalas?"
However, Kael knew by then that his bird was miserable without him; during his years studying at Dalaran Al'ar had wanted desperately to join him there, and had been utterly devastated to remain instead at Silvermoon.
Illidan had not been terribly fond of Kael's decision to have him along at the Black Temple— because Al'ar desired to follow Kael'thas through the halls, and did not remain at the stables the way other animals did.
"But he’s not a mere animal," Kael had insisted; "he’s a phoe—"
"A phoenix god, yes," Illidan had huffed moodily; "he’s a phoenix god who takes up more than half the bed and suffocates me in my sleep."
Kael had flushed at that; apart from the fact that Anasterian used to lecture him in much the same way about allowing Al’ar in his bedchamber, there came now also the unspoken matter that Kael had spent enough nights at Master’s bed for this to become an issue. Illidan did not allow Kael in his quarters every night, but of the times he did, almost without fail Al’ar would eventually find his way there in search of Kael’thas; then he would peck and squawk at the door, which would ruin the mood entirely, and Kael would shrink in apology and explain that Al’ar must have been lonely while waiting for him.
Illidan would groan with a great deal of irritation and mutter that if he’d been properly stabled then this would not have been an issue; he was somehow reminded of the ridiculous number of animals which Malfurion had kept at home while they were growing up— Malfurion, too, had been of the mind that no creature was a mere animal.
He could speak with them. He could understand their nature and converse with them as equals, and he could become one of them once his druidic studies had advanced enough; "Get him out of here," Illidan would grumble to Kael in regard to Al’ar, when said phoenix god would contentedly curl up over his face and a large part of his bed. Naturally, however, as though he could sense Illidan’s dislike, Al’ar would only make himself more comfortably at home against him.
"But he likes you," Kael would offer tentatively, like he could sense the rage on the very verge of issuing forth; "The feeling isn’t mutual," there'd come the reply, and soon Kael would be sent rushing out of the room with Al'ar in his wake before he’d incite Master’s temper.
Maybe, somewhere inside, Kael’thas missed the fights he’d had with his father.
Currently he wished Illidan would permit him into his quarters; despite everything he worried for him and couldn’t shake the feeling that something in the nature of that day’s attack had affected him differently than the injuries he’d suffered in pervious fights. The priest had spent an unusually long time at his bedside, too.
Kael remained deep in thought while stroking Al'ar's brilliant feathers, he regarded the bird’s uneasy expression and lingered on the plume he’d been caressing; "Don't you worry," he said softly, "Daddy will protect you."
They were the same words that Anasterian used to say to him— and they were curious words to say now, Kael had realized, considering a phoenix was immortal in comparison with an elf like himself. Maybe he wanted to believe that he, himself, had been capable of protecting others the way his father had protected him; maybe he wanted to believe that he was capable of protecting his own people, though he never truly believed himself strong enough.
Maybe he'd always felt a little worried about Master's vulnerabilities— after all, the very day he'd made Illidan's acquaintance, he and Vashj had rescued him from Maiev; unlike Anasterian, Master was not infallible.
That Anasterian was fallible, too, was still devastatingly difficult for Kael to accept.
To be continued…

A/N: I would love to find someone interested in roleplaying Warcraft lore, especially Illidan/Kael'thas, Wrathion/Anduin, or Varian/Arthas (if this is still on here then I'm still looking, haha!) I've had a very difficult time finding anyone interested in this, as WoW fangirls usually like RPing their OCs (which I'm not interested in doing). I don't mind at all if you don't know much lore, if English isn't your first language, if you're a little shy, or if you're new to Warcraft or to RPing; I just like writing with someone else who's passionate about the same stuff =) If you feel like giving it a go, then please reach me through the contact info on my profile. Thank you! ^^
