“Carver?”
“Marian.”
Hawke did not like the look on her brother's face as he approached – she found herself taking a step away from him, from the look in his eyes, but she took a deep breath and swallowed her fear and stood her ground.
I dueled the Arishok, she thought. I dealt with Justice when it became Vengeance, put Meredith down when the red lyrium drove her beyond redemption. I stood before Fenris' rage, Merrill's obsession, and Peatrice's deception. What did Carver ever do?
“I walked the Deep Roads after you left,” Carver seethed. “Do you know what it's like down there? Hunting and being hunted by Darkspawn? Do you know what a Brood Mother is? There's things down there, sister, things that...” He trailed off.
“It was the only way to save your life,” Marian said, raising a hand to her chest. Carver's fingers closed around her wrist and he pulled her off balance, smiling at the yelp that escaped her lips.
“From the pain I suffered trying to protect you from your own ambition,” Carver spat. “The same ambition behind the certainty that killed Bethany and let mother die. If the two of you had just not used your magic-”
“We all would have died,” Hawke said, stepping close to her brother, meeting his eyes and the fury there.
“Because I'm not strong enough?” Carver hissed. “Because I've never been strong enough?”
“Aveline would put you down,” Hawke said. “Even now that you're a Warden, she's stronger than you. It's why I trusted her at my back – she knows herself. You always had something to prove, and as often as I took you with me you were always trying to get yourself killed to prove you strong you are.”
“I am strong!” Carver roared.
“I know that,” Hawke answered, trying and failing to pull her arm free. “Why don't you?”
For a moment, she thought she might have reached him – but then she saw the green flash in his blue eyes, the ache that went all the way down to his core. She had teased him when they were younger, become more gentle with him as he became a man, but his muscle had always been used to protect their family and his lack of magic forced him to protect the rest of their kin when they couldn't protect themselves.
He glared at her, took a sweeping step back and pulled her off balance, dragging her along behind him.
“What're you doing?” asked Hawke.
“What mother should have,” Carver answered.
He sat down on the bench across from the fireplace, pulling her down over his lap and holding her there with one hand. She tried to push up but he was so much stronger than her, had always been stronger than her, and when she kicked out he bounced her, driving his knee into her gut and knocking the air from her lungs.
“Maybe if you'd been disciplined instead of encouraged to become an apostate everyone would still be alive,” Carver whispered, and Hawke sagged as she felt her skirt being lifted and she realized what her younger brother meant to do.
“S-stop,” wheezed Hawke. “You c-can't...”
“I'm tired of you telling me what to do.” Carver's voice was calm as he pushed the skirt off her backside so that it rested on the small of her back, exposing her panties. Hawke could feel cool air on her, found herself blushing from embarrassment, and then shouted as ten hard swats landed on her ass.
Her cries brought Orana and Bodahn into the room and Hawke found herself blushing as their eyes drank in the position she was in, as Carver's hand came to rest on her smarting backside.
“What,” the word trailed off in Orana's mouth. “What is happening?”
“Marian needs to learn her place,” Carver replied. Hawke could hear the smile in his voice. “I'm taking control of the family, which I should have done before my twin and mother were killed because of this one.” He spanked her again as he finished speaking, the two sets of eyes watching the motion.
Hawke could see it in their eyes – every swat made her less a person, even to them.
“Isn't that right, Marian?” Carver asked. When she said nothing he spanked her until her vision was bleary and her ass ached and felt warm, his resting palm making her whimper. “Not so tough without stone protecting you, are you? This is what the rest of us feel like all the time, Marian. Now, isn't that right?”
“F-fuck you,” Hawke hissed, crying out as she felt her brother's hand clench one aching cheek. She watched as Bodahn and Orana glanced at one another, then back at the scene before them.
“We might be able to help you with that, lad,” Bodahn said.
“The old master would spank us sometimes,” Orana added. “Are you the new master?”
“I am,” Carver said, and Marian hated the confidence in his voice.
“Then maybe I can show you a thing or two.”
