Chapter 8
Three days later, Sonic and his Freedom Fighters were doing a routine patrol of the city. Cyrus looked around as they stopped at a chili dog stand. “I can’t believe we finally won. It was so easy…”
Manic nodded. “Yeah. The city is free. The people are happy governing themselves. I mean we will need something eventually. To deal with those like Robotnik but for now, this is going great…”
Cyrus frowned. “Yes… We will need to do that soon. We need to deal with Robotnik. He’s being allowed to simply get away with all of this. He has to be punished.”
The blue hedgehog shrugged. “No he doesn’t. He has no power now, Cyrus. He lost.”
“But what about what he did to us. He made us slaves. He took away our families and friends. He took away my father. I can’t just forget that.” The lion protested. “We have to punish him.”
Sonic didn’t know how to respond to his query. They had all lost someone. He looked at Manic as he knew they were both thinking about their adopted families. “I just don’t want to rock the boat. He’s leaving us alone. He cannot hurt us. My mom and dad were good people. They taught me to never seek revenge. Mom said it would change me. I don’t know what she meant by that but… she’s one of the smartest people I ever knew so…”
Cyrus nodded. “But see, you’ll never know what she meant because of him. It’s not revenge. It’s closure. When you do something wrong, you have to pay for that wrong. He needs to pay…” They looked up as a single-person plane flew overhead and into the castle. “Especially since it looks like he may be up to something.”
Sonic and Manic pulled out their medallions while the citizens got their weapons ready. Several minutes passed as they allowed themselves to continue their daily lives but prepared to fight. The children were swiftly evacuated by a designated team of lionesses. There were none more suited to guarding their most precious treasures.
The doors of the palace opened and light streamed out as the people abandoned their stands in favor of joining ranks. They would not so easily surrender their independence and freedom again.
Robotnik approached the people, bracing for their vitriol. “People of… Mobotropolis…” He forced himself to say the words. “I wish to make an announcement…”
Together, Sonia and Bartleby looked at the ultrasound. Sonia giggled at him as they imagined their treasures. The greatest treasures any man could own.
Finally, Bartleby looked at the clock and turned on the news. The Acorn Citizens Network was now constantly in Robotropolis. He sat up straight. “Robotnik!”
Sonia sat up. “It’s okay Bartleby. He’s in Robotropolis now, he can’t hurt you. I can’t believe mom in charge of the club… but he cannot hurt you. We can turn it off if it troubles you.” She went to change it but he stopped her.
He shook his head. “No… I don’t know why… but it’s like a train wreck. I have to see it… In case your brothers end up needing help…” Bartleby trembled. He didn’t know why he had to see it but his reasoning was sound.
Sonia’s hand moved comforting up and down his chest. “You’re so brave my Bartleby. Let’s see what the jackass has to say then…”
“We don’t want to hear one word you have to say!” Cyrus shouted, the crowd roared in agreement. “We don’t listen to devils like you!”
Robotnik stood firm as he threw his weapon into the crowd, disarming himself. “I only ask you to allow me a few minutes of your time… I shall not be long then you’ll never have to deal with me again.” He promised. He had been on the fence about which way he would take but he knew now that there was only one way to make this right.
Sleet stepped forward, his gun ready. “You’re right. It would just take a few minutes.”
Manic and Sonic looked at each other. They hated Robotnik too and they feared him getting power again. However, this mob mentality wasn’t going to help. They needed to regain control before things got chaotic. They didn’t want a riot.
Sonic fired a laser in the air, getting their attention. “Come on! Let the man speak! If he makes one wrong move, he can’t stop us. Let him speak!” He commanded. He and Manic didn’t often pull rank as the rightful rulers but he wanted to avoid bloodshed.
Manic looked at his brother in agreement. “Yeah guys! Chill out!” He hollered. “We don’t want to be like him!”
Robotnik saw the crowd pull back and took his chance. “I am leaving this city. I shall not return after this day. And I return the throne to its rightful princes. Sonic and Manic Hedgehog. Before I leave, I want to clear the air. I am an evil man and I have realized that. I allowed my grief from losing my wife and my best friends to change me into the bastard you see before you. My godson, Bartleby Montclair, attempted to pull me back from the abyss many times. However, I’m a stubborn old coot and I… refused to accept his lessons of compassion and empathy.” He looked around at the angry faces. He saw one of the Freedom Fighters, the lion, pick up his weapon, the only weapon with the centrifugal force required to allow his armor to be pierced.
In her hotel room, Aleena watched the news. She felt tears in her eyes. She had not known that he was a widower. Her husband, Jules, had died in an epidemic that had ravaged the kingdom while she watched helplessly, right before she found out she was with child.
“I know I’ve hurt everyone here in ways that I cannot change. I hope that one day, I can correct my wrongs. Now, I have said what I need to say. Hedgehogs, I trust you will be the leaders that I failed to be. Farewell…” Robotnik turned and walked towards the palace. He heard someone pull back the barrel of their weapon and stopped, offering no resistance. If they wanted to take his life for his sins then he would accept his punishment.
“Cyrus stop!” Sonic shouted but it was too late. He watched their foe brace himself but he didn’t move.
It almost felt like time slowed down as the bullet raced toward its target. When it seemed like it would hit, it suddenly hit an invisible wall and bounced harmlessly to the ground.
The crowd gasped with shock to see the amethyst queen standing there between Robotnik and themselves. Sonic felt relief. He didn’t want anyone hurt if it wasn’t needed. But that their mother had saved him was astonishing. Before a word could be spoken, she snapped her fingers and they vanished.
He looked to Cyrus who had fallen to his knees in sobs. The moment he pulled the trigger, he knew he didn’t want to be like the man who had taken his father. “Father! Father!” He screamed in his grief, finally allowing himself to mourn for his family. He didn’t register his friends surrounding him in a comforting embrace as he wept.
Bartleby slumped back on the sofa, releasing a breath he didn’t know he’d been holding. “I don’t understand… I was afraid…” He admitted. “I thought…”
Sonia pet her shoulder. “You’re a good man Bartleby. Of course you were afraid…” She kissed his cheek. “You’re going to be a great father…”
“I hate him. What he did to us… but…” He groaned as if he felt physical pain at the situation. He buried his face in his hands as he began to sob with confusion, pain, fear.
She could only rub his back. “Maybe… I know it’s scary… but… Bartleby, maybe we’ve been handling this wrong.” She said as she held him. “Maybe you need to talk to him.” At his alarmed look, she continued. “I’m not saying forgive him. Certainly not. But talk to him. Have it out with him. Tell him how you’re feeling. If only so that you can get some closure.”
Bartleby coughed out a sob. “I’m sorry my love… I can’t do it. You see, I want to hate him. In my head, I hate him with every fiber of my being. But… he’s still the one who soothed my fevers when I was sick. The one who bore every single one of my childhood tantrums. He told me stories of my mother and father. He taught me how reading, writing, arithmetic, science, history, the whole lot.” He buried his head in her shoulder. “But that’s not who he is anymore… He fooled me for so long and I don’t know which way is up anymore… I’m afraid that if I talk to him that he’ll be able to fool me again.”
Sonia thought about what they’d just watched. “I understand my love. I’ll talk to Mother and ask that she makes sure that he keeps his distance. Even with the club. I don’t know why she’s protecting him but she does understand that this is difficult for you. I feel like I need to help her with it but you don’t have to. It’s just… if being a club owner will bring her happiness then who am I stop her...”
He nodded. “Thank you… I’m at least okay being in the same room but… that’s the most I can do. I love you… I promise, I will never hurt you or our darlings the way he did. I could never cause anyone that much pain intentionally.” Bartleby placed his hand on her stomach. He could feel the small bump there.
Sonia hugged him close, considering those words. Robotnik was a large part of his growing up. His values were instilled in him by Robotnik. By all rights, Bartleby should be a maniacal, rotund tub of lard. But he was kind, loving, brave when he wanted to be. He was a good man who knew how to love with his whole heart. She couldn’t credit Lady Wyndemere, she only helped with Bartleby early morning until he turned six. That was how she met Bartleby. The day after her adoption, though she didn’t remember it explicitly. She couldn’t even credit herself. She and Mindy were his best friends in school but that was a short period of time. They may have played some role but the largest source of growth was Robotnik. That was an interesting irony. One she would need to think about.
Robotnik looked at Aleena as they reappeared in the hotel room. Before he could chastise her, she smacked him several times. “You idiot! What were you thinking?! Three-hundred IQ and you don’t know to duck when someone shoots at you! You’re lucky I was watching the news!”
He heard her words chastising him instead and realized she was concerned about him. He saw fear in her eyes but it was a different fear. He had not seen that look since Maria. He had never expected to see that look again.
“Don’t ever do that again!” She ordered him, her body shaking with the panic she’d felt. She didn’t know why it frightened her to see that. She suddenly could not imagine losing him. She looked into his eyes, coming down from her fright. She couldn’t help realizing that he was adorable, in his own way, as his eyes communicated fear, doubt, self-loathing. Neither could help what happened after as their minds became lost in their loneliness, desperation and need.
