Chapter 9: All Sides of the Coin
Claudette peeked over her shoulders, a small smile on her face as she looked between the two of them, and then eyed Nea. “So, how’d it go with Anna?” she asked.
The tagger squinted at her as Meg slouched forward and buried her face in her hands. “Who’s Anna?” Nea asked, confused.
The botanist blinked. “The Huntress. She didn’t tell you her name after going down on you?”
Nea’s eyes expanded and the sprinter could feel her glare upon her, and could only try to hide her face more. Why, Claudette? Just… fucking… why… She straightened up, chewing her lip as her red face was revealed, though the darkness hid most of it.
“What the fuck!” Nea ground out in a hushed voice. “Both of you knew!?”
Claudette put her hands up and offered an apologetic wince. “Oh… I’m guessing you really didn’t know,” she said as she studied Meg’s face. “Sally must not have told you.”
The botanist became the target of both of their glares. “Who the fuck is Sally?” they asked in unison.
The botanist burst out laughing. “Oh… Uh… All of them have names, you know. Sally is the Nurse. Anna is the Huntress. Lisa is the Hag. Adiris is the Plague. Rin is the Spirit.” She shivered and rubbed one arm with the other as her eyes drifted to the darkness. “I still haven’t gotten used to her. Anyway… Amanda is the Pig, and there’s Julie and Susie of the Legion. I’m not quite sure how to tell them apart, but I haven’t really stopped to try.” As her rattling off the names sank in, she glanced over her shoulder again.
Realization set in and Nea slowly turned to the sprinter. “Wait a sec. If Sally is the Nurse, then…”
“Don’t say it,” Meg begged. “Please—”
“You’ve been fucking the Nurse?” She kept her voice restrained, but there was no hiding her anger.
Meg opened her mouth, but Claudette took a step forward and cut in. “Look, it isn’t up to her, or any of us. We’ve all been picked, and Sally got the first choice. She picked Meg, and there’s nothing that can change that.”
The tagger wasn’t buying it and sneered. “You’ve been getting a free pass on the Nurse all this time because of that?”
The sprinter shook her head. “N-no. This wasn’t even a thing until very recently.”
Nea glared at her for a moment and closed her eyes. “I don’t know if I believe you. I don’t think I can even trust you anymore.”
Those words hurt Meg more than she thought they would given the situation, but she wasn’t going to leave it at that. “That’s funny coming from you. You didn’t seem too bothered when she was eating you out, and then let us go afterwards.”
The tagger’s face flushed and her angry composure crumbled to indignation. “Oh, yeah? And the little voyeur in you got to watch and get off to it.” She turned to Claudette to see her face lighting up. “Twice.”
The botanist choked on amused disbelief and turned to Meg. “Wait, seriously? You masturbated while you watched?” A grin split her face, and she could barely repress her laughter.
The sprinter turned beet red with embarrassment and tried to find something to say to defend herself. Anything to spare her from this moment. Nea… We agreed to keep this a secret…
“Hell yes she did,” the tagger chimed in. “The Huntress dragged her in there and made her start before us, but then she came a second time all on her own.” Claudette exploded with laughter, but Nea’s scowling face hadn’t changed. “See? She can’t even lie about it.
The botanist wrapped an arm around Meg’s shoulders for support as she heaved air back into her lungs between hysterical giggles. As she caught her breath, she turned to the tagger and beamed. “You know, she spied on Lisa and I, and that’s how we caught her. Lisa was nice enough to tell the others that she likes to watch and get herself off.”
“Th-that’s not true!” Meg protested, but all it did was cause Nea to fold her arms across her chest and scowl.
“W-wait…” the tagger muttered as she regarded the botanist. “You… and the Hag?” When she received an affirmative nod it looked as though her anger was stifled by an ill look.
Claudette snorted and chuckled as she turned to Meg. “You could’ve fooled us when you came all over yourself to the Hag and me. You were literally caught with your pants down.” Nea turned away with a ghastly look as imagination clearly got to her.
Meg had enough and shook the botanist off, throwing her hands up. “Alright, fuck this, and fuck the both of you. I’m going to sleep.”
The botanist continued to snicker as they all split up, with Meg heading for the tents and Nea marching away in silence. By now the other survivors had taken notice of them, with a few asking what was going on. Claudette returned to the campfire with composure, and Meg could overhear her telling the others they were working out a disagreement and it was fine.
As Meg returned to her tent, she quickly zipped it shut behind hers and flopped onto the sleeping bag. She brooded in silence, replaying the embarrassment and shame on her face, and the further soul crushing the other girls had just done. It was bad enough being a toy for the Nurse, and now she was going to have to suffer the scorn of being branded as a pervert and made fun of as well. Loosing a frustrated cry into her pillow, she rolled over and let the tension fade.
Images of Nea and the Huntress’s—Anna’s—nude bodies in the firelight, and the moans they let out, trickled back into her mind. She lamented that it was arousing and inspiring, yet she had never been into women, and certainly not watching others. Why am I like this? she thought grimly. Why couldn’t I just be normal? She chuckled to herself. What’s normal in a place like this?
Footsteps could be heard outside of the tent, and then a patting on the door. “H-Hey, Meg?” It was Nea.
The sprinter furled her brow and clamped her eyes shut. “What do you want, Nea? Did you come to make me feel worse about all of this than I already do?”
“N-No… Can we talk?” came the timid reply.
Meg sighed. “Come in.” She sat up and watched the girl climb into the tent and zip it shut behind her. “I thought you’d be too pissed at me to want to talk for a while.”
Nea nodded. “I am… I was… But I talked to Claudette again, and…”
The sprinter arched a brow. “And?”
“It’s better than dying.” Nea tried to force a smile, but all Meg could do was cover her face with her hands again. “She told me what happened, and how this all started.”
“Even about me?” When the tagger nodded, Meg groaned. “That was so embarrassing, and now they all think I’m into that. Since Sally has influence, she told them all to include me.”
Nea snickered. “You’re such a pervert. I always took you as too goody for that.”
The sprinter flushed and laid back down, quickly putting up a frown. “Did you come here to make fun of me, too? I’ve already got Trolldette for that.”
“No, no.” Nea took her place beside her, finding just enough space for the two of them to lay comfortably side-by-side. “It’s just that… everything got so much weirder today, and I don’t have anyone else I can talk to about it.”
“There’s always Claudette,” Meg reminded her. “She seems to be in the know about this.”
“Yeah, but it’s so weird. And like you said, this is really embarrassing.”
Meg sighed again. “So… what? You want to swap stories or something? I don’t think—”
Nea sprang up and looked away. “No, no. I mean…” She paused before looking back to the sprinter. “I just needed a friend, and I look up to you sometimes. You were the only other person that was there, and… despite how I acted I don’t want any bad blood.”
She looks up to me? Meg had never considered herself a role model of any kind, least of all in this strange world. “I don’t want you to be upset, either, but I don’t know what to do about any of this. What if the others find out?”
“About you and the Nurse?”
The sprinter nodded. “Not much has happened between us. Certainly, a lot less than you and the Huntress… or Claudette and the Hag.” She tried not to think about the Hag’s gnarled body, or monstrous face, but she was unable to decouple her from the images of her sexual encounter with the botanist, nor disassociate that with the arousing nature of the situation.
Nea chuckled. “So… what’s she like? The Nurse, that is.”
Meg opened her mouth to voice shock, but she hesitated. At this point, it wasn’t as surprising as before. “Well… I guess it would’ve been interesting to meet her under different… circumstances. She was, uh… gentle. And a… good kisser…” She blushed thinking about the awkward kisses she had to give the faceless woman.
“What about all the times she’s killed you?” The tagger chewed her lip, and Meg could see the flashbacks to her own deaths at the Nurse’s hand playing in her mind.
“I try not to think about those. She went from murdering me, to avoiding me, and then to protecting me, and now…” She blushed again. “W-Well. Y-You know…”
Nea shook her head. “Nuh-uh. You watched me, and you got yourself off while doing it. Twice! Spill it.”
The sprinter gave her a questioning glance and bit her lip before caving into the demand. Sighing, she closed her eyes and started from the first encounter. “The first time she tried to set me up I fell down some stairs and broke my neck when I tried to get away, but—”
Nea exploded with laughter. “Wait, seriously?” When she could see the embarrassment in Meg’s eyes, she continued a while longer. Eventually, she took in a wheezing breath. “Alright, and the next time?”
Meg didn’t want to go into any details, so she quickly glossed over the more intimate parts of the encounter. “Th-There was some kissing, and f-fondling, and cuddling. We didn’t really do much. She, uh, got me… off. It was awkward, and I fell asleep afterwards. I tried not to think about it too much.” It was actually nice, she thought to herself, in spite of the pleasantness being drowned by the thoughts of her deaths.
The tagger’s eyes lit up. “Wait, if you kissed her, then you got to see her face?”
Meg shook her head. “Not exactly. She rolled her cover up to her nose. Her skin is very pale, like porcelain. She was wearing black lipstick, or something like it. I don’t know if it’s makeup or just a part of her. It looked good, at least…”
Shrugging, the tagger dictated her thoughts aloud. “I wonder why she covers her face. It can’t be that bad, since the Hag doesn’t cover hers.”
“You’d better watch it. I’m pretty sure Claudette would fight you on that.” Both girls giggled, and Meg could feel her exhaustion setting in. “Hey, I’m going to try and get some sleep.”
“Oh, um, do you mind if I… stay?” Nea asked, taking her beanie off. She had rarely ever removed it, and she quickly scrubbed a hand through her matted hair to loosen it up.
Meg studied her face, watching the tagger become timid beneath her gaze. Sleeping alone wasn’t an enticing thought, and the lonely hopelessness of the twisted realm only haunted her dreams. “I… don’t mind,” replied the sprinter, shuffling her pillow over.
Nea laid down beside her and closed her eyes. “Thank you.”
