From her rooftop vantage point, Starr sighted down the shaft of the arrow, her eyes narrowed in concentration. The dark elf would emerge shortly, the sounds of the ice shattering had ceased. A small, nearly imperceptible puff of dust on the ground marked his location in the doorway and she released the arrow.
Using one of the shards of ice he’d picked up, Shin knocked the arrow out of the air. As soon as he did so, the icy weapon melted, no doubt she’d melted it as soon as she saw it. He smiled to himself as he gripped the remaining shard tighter, dodging the small flurry of arrows she sent in his direction. Quickly and silently, he ran through the fortress, avoiding the guards as much as possible. He wasn’t interested in killing anyone unless he absolutely didn’t have a choice. Killing took time, time he preferred not to waste. With another quick glance over his shoulder, he checked to see where Starr was.
He frowned. She’d clearly not thought out this little scheme, whatever it was. Allowing him to go free was ill advised at best. And why was she not calling out to the guards? His lips pressed together into a thin line as he avoided yet another arrow. As he continued threading his way carefully through the fortress, he realized that the arrows were not being fired at full strength. Since his superiors had planned on tasking him with bringing her back from a battlefield, they’d instructed him on how to distinguish her arrows from the other light archers.
Her arrows had a distinct, haunting, and piercing scream to them as they rent the air upon their passing.
The arrows she was firing now were silent. Was the silence to her current arrows purposeful, in order to avoid drawing the guards’ attention? Or was she unable to generate the power she once had?
Starr bit her lip in frustration as the dark elf again avoided her arrow. Her attempts to push him in any direction were failing. She’d thought that once she let him go he’d make a break for the outer walls. But he didn’t, he’d gone straight to the heart of the fortress, Aelaru’s command center. As he approached the centermost keep of the fortress, Starr knew that she couldn’t afford to hold back. If she wanted to stop him from getting inside, she’d have to fire her arrows at full force, something she’d been trying to avoid as she knew they would definitely draw attention of the guards. Not only that but firing at full force hurt. She still couldn’t fire at that strength for long periods of time. At most, she could fire maybe ten to fifteen arrows before she had to take a break.
Fully drawing the bowstring back, she lined up the shot and fired.
The arrow screamed through the air, creating its signature whistling sound for a split second before it lodged itself in the center of the door to the command center.
Shin leapt to the side with an uncharacteristic curse. “Hrea…” He snarled in angry frustration as he glared first at the arrow that was embedded in the door in front of him, and then back at her. Lips curling upward in mounting aggravation, he kicked the door in and disappeared inside. He didn’t have much time now. Already, he could hear the sounds of guards calling to one another and scrambling to see what had caused her to fire her weapon. Moving swiftly, Shin saw the raven was sitting on a stack of scrolls. Grabbing the scrolls, he quickly read a few lines before tossing them to the side.
His eyes rapidly scanned the room, searching for anything that might look like it contained valuables. There were plenty of lockboxes. But what stood out to him were the faint score marks on the wall. Crossing the room quickly, he traced the faint marks with his fingertips. Smirking slightly, he used the shard of ice to carve into the wood and pry open the hidden compartment. Inside, lay the last remaining copy of the treaty.
He snatched it up and gave it to the raven. The bird took the scrolls and promptly flew away, making use of one of the windows. As he watched the bird, he became aware of the increasing sounds coming from outside. Eyes narrowing, he escaped out of the same window the bird had.
Starr clambered down from her rooftop perch and joined the guards that were beginning to rapidly swarm throughout the fortress. As she did so, she kept an eye open for Einao. She didn’t have to wait long before he came racing toward her.
“What happened?!” Einao questioned, taking in her armor and weapons.
Gritting her teeth, Starr replied tensely, thinking quickly. “I was going to see if he would respond more favorably to questioning if he knew who I was…”
Einao gripped her arm and pulled her away from the other guards. “You what?!” He hissed at her, keeping his voice low. “You let him know who you are?! On purpose?!” He stared at her incredulously. “Why would you go and do something that foolish?!”
Before Starr could reply, a dark figure landed between them. Shin shoved her backwards roughly with one hand and thrust the ice shard at the sentry, cleanly slicing through the tough leather armor.
Hissing in pain, Einao leapt back. “Guards!” He yelled as he regained his balance. Fierce determination gripped him. The dark elf had to die. He was far too dangerous to attempt to keep prisoner any longer.
Not wasting time, Shin spun and kicked out, catching the sentry high in the chest. He wasn’t worried about the elven guards. There weren’t many left and most of them were not highly skilled at all.
Regaining her balance, Starr raised her bow and attempted to fire point blank at the dark elf.
Shin grimaced slightly as he dodged the arrow as it screamed past his right ear. Reaching out, he gripped the bow and attempted to wrench it away from her. However, he snatched his hand back in surprise as he felt icy spikes erupt from the bow, piercing his hand.
“Don’t think you can wrest my weapon away from me so easily!” She snarled at him, raising the bow for another shot.
Shin growled lowly and allowed his magic to conceal him, moving swiftly to avoid being shot at close range. He needed to draw her, and the hated sentry, away from the fortress. Split them away from the rest of the guards. Coming behind the sentry, he allowed himself to be visible once again and drove the shard of ice deep into the sentry’s upper arm.
Einao yelled in pain while turning to face his attacker. His own dagger flashed through the air briefly before he felt it slice into the dark elf.
Shin barely registered the pain, lashing out again with the shard of ice with one hand and gripping Einao’s wrist with the other. He squeezed on the wrist tightly while bending it backward. It only took a second, but he could hear and feel the bones twisting and grinding before they snapped.
As Einao yelled in agony, Starr realized what the dark elf was using as a weapon. Cursing fluently, she dispelled the icy shard. “Imak aw uniem ihsanedukor on osuk iaruk okusum o oyhukok vyll kalan!”
Upon hearing the hated curse, Shin rushed her, knocking the bow cleanly to one side while roughly pushing her against the wall of a nearby building. “I would appreciate it if you refrained from both using that language and calling me that ever again in the future, hrea!” He bit out angrily, his temper well and truly sparked. Leaning in closer and speaking softly, though no less angrily, he reminded her. “I accepted punishment for a crime I didn’t commit against you, do not make me regret that decision, you won’t like the consequences!” Leaping away from her, he disappeared from their sight.
As Starr and Einao picked themselves up, Shin watched them from the nearby rooftop he’d retreated to. His eyes were narrowed in anger as he glared at her. That dockside language could only have been picked up from the humans. The insult alone was bad enough, but the foul language was intolerable.
Putting it out of his mind, he quickly palmed the steel dagger he’d swiped from one of the guards he’d killed mere moments before he’d attacked them. The steel blade was good, but he found himself wanting a purposefully created dagger of hers. The shard of ice had held up surprisingly well, until she’d dissolved it. As he sprinted away, looking for a way to separate them from the others, he contemplated a possible method of gaining an ice weapon from her. The shard of ice leftover from the chair she’d created had performed stunningly well. It was just as good as any steel blade he’d ever come across.
Einao gritted his teeth through the pain as he pushed himself upright. Between the blow to his chest, the deep gouge in his upper arm, and now his broken wrist, he was in agonizing pain. His pain filled blue eyes caught Starr’s. “What did he mean by that?” He gasped. “What did he mean that he accepted punishment for a crime he didn’t commit?”
Her mouth dropped open in fearful dismay. He’d overheard! “I don’t know!” She exclaimed nervously.
Einao watched her closely, feeling the blood trickle down his arm. Her leather archery armor, her bow, she’d not used them in months. Now, suddenly, she’d decided to use them. The dark elf escaped…
All on the same night.
“What exactly did you do?” He snapped, rising suspicion, anger, and disappointment giving him enough of an edge to push through the worst of the pain. “Did you set him loose?” As her face drained of color, Einao knew the answer.
For a moment he wasn’t sure what he should do. If she were anyone else, he wouldn’t have hesitated at all. Setting a dark elf free was such a dangerous offense that the offender could be killed immediately by any guard.
“Come on!” He growled lowly, pulling her with him. “We’ll catch and kill him now, we’ll worry about why he’s free later!” As they searched the fortress, Einao kept them away from the other guards and patrols as much as possible. As they searched, Einao scolded her for her foolish actions.
Meanwhile, Shin kept careful watch on the two of them as he skillfully hid all over the fortress. He’d managed to quickly set several makeshift traps and decoys that were distracting many of the guards. Now, he just needed to catch these two alone.
As they got closer to one of the small doors that led outside the fortress, Shin attacked the lone watchman who was posted there. He didn’t draw out the unfortunate elf’s demise. One swift thrust of the dagger into the heart and the elf dropped to the ground, dead before he’d even registered the pain.
Starr fired an arrow as Einao lunged forward.
Shin dodged the arrow, which hit the wood and steel reinforced door behind him with such force that it knocked it clean off the hinges. “Thank you, hrea!” Shin called out to her with a wide smile and a wave before making his escape out of the door.
Cursing, Starr took off after the dark elf and Einao.
Shin knew that her arrow would’ve alerted the others, but he didn’t care anymore. They were out of the fortress and now in the forest. The traps he’d set weeks before lay in wait for those unfortunate enough to stumble on them.
As he continued leading Starr and the sentry deeper into the forest, he allowed his concealment spell to drop occasionally, giving them a chance to spot him. Several times she’d fired arrows at him, one even exploding the tree he’d been hiding behind. But he was noticing that the arrows were losing their power. Reaching the river, he made a dash for the water and dove in. As he did so, an arrow streaked past him, and the water exploded upwards in a roiling froth.
Einao winced, the pain beginning to override the healing potions he’d taken. “He’s gone.” He muttered.
Starr glared at the water, not so sure. However, her back screamed at her, and her arm was shaking from the effort she’d exerted.
Einao glanced at her, taking in her pained expression and trembling form. “You’ve reached your limit. We should go back.”
She looked at him apprehensively. “What are you going to do?”
They gazed at one another quietly for long, tension fraught seconds before Einao broke the silence. “You know I can’t ignore this.” He whispered, his voice full of anguish. Her actions had caused people to die tonight. Good people. He couldn’t look away, not after this.
Starr nodded mutely, her grip on her bow loosening. As she extended her arm outward in preparation to hand Einao the weapon, it was suddenly ripped from her grasp.
Shin swung the bow with all his strength toward the river. It hit the water and skipped along the surface several times before finally sinking and disappearing. Turning his attention to the sentry, he grabbed the elf by the back of his neck and shoulders and held him still while he thrust his dagger deep into the sentry’s chest, twisting the blade sharply as he did so.
He didn’t take time to relish the death of the sentry. Swiftly turning, he faced the still startled Starr. “I really must insist you come with me, hrea.” Shin murmured lowly as he slowly began walking toward her. On the one hand, he kind of hoped that she would put up a fight. And on the other hand, he really hoped that she wouldn’t.
Breaking from her momentary shock, Starr attempted to cast a spell at him. However, her exhaustion and the leather armor worked against her, and she was too slow.
Closing the distance quickly, Shin gripped her wrists and held them out at her sides briefly, pulling her close to him in the process. Leaning his head down, he rested his forehead on hers as he brought her hands down and behind her back slowly, reaching around her to clasp both of her hands in one of his. He could feel the tremors that were coursing through her body. “He was right, you’ve pushed yourself too far. Your last arrow was far weaker than the first.” He chided her as he wound an enchanted rope around her wrists and tied it securely. He left a six-foot-long portion of it free, allowing him something to hold onto as he began to pull her in the direction he wanted to go.
Angered, Starr planted her feet firmly and pulled back against the rope. She focused her energy on her magic and attempted to freeze the rope to the point of breaking but was surprised when her magic didn’t respond at all. In fact, she couldn’t even feel her magic energy. “What have you done?!” She snapped indignantly as she yanked against the rope.
“Enchanted ropes. Impervious to magic.” Shin replied simply, holding the rope steady against her thrashing. For a minute or two he let her pull on the rope as she tried to free herself. However, they were still uncomfortably close to the fortress, even if the guards were woefully under skilled. Yanking the rope, he pulled her forward a couple of feet. “You can walk, or you can be dragged.” As she sucked in a large breath of air, he had a fraction of a second to realize she was going to scream.
Not caring to have his ears assaulted once more, her arrows flying past his ears had been loud enough, he leapt forward and gripped her throat tightly enough to partially restrict the airflow to her lungs. “My ears have suffered enough tonight. If you must insist on opening your mouth to scream, I will have to find other, more pleasing, uses for your mouth.” He intoned warningly.
Realizing that without either her magic or her bow, she was entirely at his mercy, Starr mentally cursed and forced herself to relax in his grip.
Relaxing his grip on her throat and sliding his hand to her chin, Shin leaned forward and gave her a quick kiss. “Good girl.” Turning around quickly, he strode forward, tugging her along behind him. If they made good enough time they could reach his fenrir by morning. The wolf would quickly take them to one of his hideouts and then, he would finish what she’d so foolishly started.
His pace quickened.
