Starr glared daggers at him, she would’ve given him a piece of her mind except the silencing spell hadn’t worn off yet. Even though she couldn’t move away from where she stood or change the direction she faced, she could pick up her right foot and stomp it, and she did so vehemently in her frustration.
Shin chuckled in spite of himself. The quiet tantrum was oddly amusing.
Starr’s head reared back in affronted indignation at his low laughter. How dare he? This was no laughing matter. She wanted her real clothes back, she wanted the spells removed. Now!
Shin moved behind her again, ignoring her snort of aggravation. For long moments he simply stared at the back of her head, idly noticing the tremor skating along the length of her ears, indicating her tense unease with the situation. He had to admit, Aleyel’s choice of clothing had served it’s obvious purpose. However, Starr’s downright deplorable attitude detracted from her beauty.
On the one hand, he could understand that her attitude might be a direct result of the imminent annihilation of light elven kind. But, that was something neither of them could change. She would have to learn to live in a world where there were few of her kind left. Already, the dark elves had begun their brutal attack on her kind. Her village was falling swiftly. There were rumors that a shared river between light elven land and Gludio territory had turned red with blood, rendering it undrinkable for the human settlement.
“I can’t change the course of history between our two people’s. And neither can you.” He intoned softly. “We can only determine how we will adapt to the new world in which we have found ourselves.” Pausing for a moment, he carefully studied her ears, noticing that the right one had angled a bit more towards him, indicating she was listening. “Honestly, there aren’t many options for either of us. You don’t wish to be here. I would rather that you were here under better circumstances. If I let you go, or they suspect I’ve let you go, I will be killed.”
Starr’s ears drooped downwards dejectedly. He wasn’t going to let her go, not when his life hung in the balance.
“Should you somehow get free, what then? I imagine you’ll probably try to seek help from the humans, but have you fully thought that out?” He moved back in front of her. His gaze captured hers. “Have you any concept of how greed works? Once something becomes rare, it becomes coveted. People will seek you out. They won’t all be nice, seeking to protect you. There will be those who think nothing of harming you, or using you for their own ends. Your life will never be the same as it once was. It was irrevocably changed months ago, when Asterios asked us for help. Yet you’re only just feeling the effects now.”
He noticed that the faint tracing of magic across her lips were fading, indicating that the spell was wearing off. The tenor of his voice changed slightly, developing a soft, yet distinct edge, bracing himself for the inevitable verbal onslaught that was going to be unleashed. “While I am truly sorry for what has happened, your behavior towards me is both intolerable and inexcusable. Until you can conduct yourself in a more dignified and reasonable manner, you will be punished.”
“You arrogant, son of a…!” She snarled viciously as her hand swiftly flew through the air and landed against his cheek with a loud crack.
“That is the exact opposite of dignified and reasonable.” He studied her intently, debating on his next action. The rapid, angry rising and falling of her chest drew his attention to her outfit. “You have a choice. Apologize, and you may have something more comfortable to sleep in. Don’t apologize, and you will sleep in that.”
So shocked at his words, she didn’t even notice that she’d taken a step backwards as the spell binding her in place fell away. “You wouldn’t…”
“I would, and I will.”
“It’s uncomfortable!”
“That’s the point.”
They stared one another down in a tense standoff.
Starr held his glare as best she could. But as the moment stretched out longer and longer, she felt increasingly uncomfortable. He wasn’t blinking, and didn’t even appear to be breathing anymore. It was unnerving and eventually she dropped her gaze. However, he never looked away from her. “What are you doing?” She finally asked, her voice conveying her hesitance.
“Waiting on your apology.” He replied, voice flat.
She really didn’t want to, but she knew that she needed to concede this battle and take time to come up with a new strategy. “Sorry.”
Shin’s eyes narrowed. “No, you’re not. At least you could feign emotion when you lie. A child can do better. Try again.”
Starr bit the inside of her cheek to refrain from making the situation worse. The insufferable dark elf was going die in his sleep! “I’m sorry.” She gritted from between tightly clenched teeth.
“I suppose it’s a start.” Shin retorted, finally easing his stance and taking his eyes off of her. “Wait here.” He disappeared from the room and retrieved a gownlike garment from the various items of clothing on the racks. Returning to the room, he discovered that she’d rather surprisingly stayed exactly where he’d left her. Thrusting the silky cloth to her, he informed her dryly. “This should do.”
She reached out and took the cloth, not quite knowing what to say. As she shook the scrap of silk out to see what fresh new hell awaited her, she found her voice. “I thought I would get to choose…”
“I said that you could have something else to sleep in, not that you would get a choice in what you would sleep in. Although, technically, you do still have a choice.”
Her face drained of color and she fled to the changing room quickly. Shin rolled his shoulders to relieve the tension in them and looked to the bed. He knew she’d been using it. As these were the master chambers, it was both the largest and most luxurious bed their quarters had to offer. So, naturally, she’d been using it. Well, if she wanted to use it tonight, she’d have to share it with him.
A grin lifted his lips.
There was a small settee in an little alcove in the room. It was just a place in the room for reading, but the cushions were plush enough to sleep on. He crossed the room and closed the door, engaging the spells that securely locked it, ensuring only he could open it. Stripping down quickly, he slid under the bedsheets, and waited.
When Starr reemerged into the room, she stared aghast at the bed.
He was in it.
“Get out!” She all but shrieked.
Shaking his head, he replied calmly. “Master’s quarters. The bed is as much mine as it is yours. In fact, an argument could be made that it’s more mine than yours.”
Her right ear twitched in anger.
Patting the covers, he motioned for her to come to him. “I’m willing to let you continue sleeping in the bed though, it’s more than large enough for the both of us.” At her continued silence, he motioned to the settee in the alcove. “Or, you could sleep there if you’d prefer.”
Her lips twisted into a feral expression, eerily similar to an animal lifting it’s lips in a snarl as she stalked over to the door.
“It’s locked. I couldn’t have you sneaking around and getting a weapon from my rucksack while I slept.”
“Anything can be used as a weapon if it’s wielded properly.” She retorted, eyeing up a large mirror that stood against the wall.
His gaze followed hers. “Maybe I should restrain you.” He went to stand up and get a length of rope that he’d spotted earlier, a present from Aleyel, along with all of her other ‘presents’.
As the covers slid down his torso and he stood up from the bed, she screeched and turned away from him. “Have you no sense of decency!?”
“What? I thought it only fair. I’ve gotten to see quite a bit of you.” He laughed lowly, but his eyes roved over her in the thin, nearly see through gown that only just barely covered her ass. She’d looked sexy in the leather and lace. It was a pity her attitude didn’t match. While normally he didn’t find any of the items Aleyel had left him interesting, he did find the idea of using some of them with Starr intriguing.
And what did she think of them? He had no idea how long she’d been left alone to stare at them. Did she know what they were for? Some of the items were so blatant that she had to know what purpose they served, but what of the others? A more interesting thought drifted to mind. Would Starr enjoy them?
“I’ll sleep over here.” She growled out, breaking his train of thought.
He spoke before he thought. “Pity.”
She cast a withering glare at him as she laid awkwardly on the settee.
Shin turned on his side, facing away from her and drifted off to sleep, pulling the covers up against the cool air. His dreams centered on Starr, clad in leather and lace, her attitude put to far more pleasing uses.
Starr meanwhile shivered uncontrollably. If she hadn’t already known that there were no spare covers in the room she would’ve searched for one. For hours she suffered the cold, cursing both his ancestors and her luck. Eventually, she could bear it no longer. Slowly and quietly she crept to the bed and slowly raised the covers.
If she moved slowly enough, she could maneuver onto the bed and under the covers. Staying close to the edge, she’d avoid any contact with him, and have a fast escape route. Sliding under the covers, she tried to forget his state of complete undress. She closed her eyes in appreciation as the warmth of the blanket surrounded her. Now, all she had to do, was sleep lightly so that she could wake up before him and go back to the settee without him ever realizing that she’d slept in the bed with him.
Within minutes, she was deeply asleep.
Shin smirked in amusement in the dark as he scooted closer to her. He’d awoken as soon as she’d begun making her way to the bed. He tensed in sudden surprise when she rolled over in her sleep unexpectedly and incredibly snuggled up to him in her unconscious bid to find warmth while sleeping.
At first, he’d expected her to wake up. But when she didn’t, he relaxed. As she slept against him, he pondered their situation. If she could just lose her attitude…
