Mageborn.
By Kerianya_fijiteenia
Inspired by Vchan's beautiful story "Dragonflies." I only hope that I can create a story that generates the same intrigue.
This story is rated ADULT, I know a lot of you don't read the bit before the story but what the hell ^^;
Mageborn is rated as adult because it contains scenes of violence, death, discrimination and delicious scenes of explicit YAOI. In short, scenes of two men/boys having relationships of a romantic and sexual nature. There are also scenes of rape and implied paedophilia. The main Yaoi romance in this story is Keiji Maeda and that idol of all SW yaoi fan girls, Mori Ranmaru.
There are also straight pairings and one lesbian pairing within this fic, but happily it is mostly Yaoi!!!
For your reading pleasure a happy abundance of original characters lurk, hide or simply walk throughout the Alternate Universe story line. They belong to me, with exception of the bit part characters in the game (Mori Yoshinari, Mori Nagayoshi, Akechi Soujiro, Akechi Shingemoto, Akechi Hidemitsu, Maeda Toshiie, Maeda Toshihisa, and maybe more later.)
I don't own Samurai warriors of any kind, especially those in the game. As I said only the truly original characters are mine.
I do not own Aurian, Anvar, Miathan, Eliseth and Aeolus; I only transformed them into gods for the sake of the story. The basic concepts of the magefolk, dragonfolk, leviathan, Ak'Zahar, angels/skyfolk and the phaerie are not mine. They all belong to Maggie Furey, the incredible fantasy writer.
Anyhoo, read on. This is just a starter to let you in on what is happening before I get the tale started.
Prologue.
My name is Ranmaru Mori and I am seventeen years old. My blood sister and I live in the foster care of Yoshinari and Arashi Mori. We have been living with them for ten years now, and will continue to live with them until our parents have recovered and regained their strength. You see, they were burned on "purity pyres" ten years ago, and as you can imagine having your body reduced to ashes takes a lot out of you. They were forced to retreat to our home world, leaving us here where we were comparatively safe.
I guess that you have worked out that my blood sister and I are not human. I must congratulate you. Few know of our true species, and I would greatly appreciate it if you would keep it like that, or my sister and I may find ourselves as piles of ash too.
You see, we are magefolk. Our parents, who also share the surname of our foster family, are members of magefolk aristocracy. In fact my mother is one of the royal family. She is an ice mage, able to control, manipulate and even manifest ice, snow and chill winds at will. Ironically my mother was christened Winter, daughter of Blitzus Pulchrae, the weather mage and magefolk king. My father was born to Amadeus Mori; my grandfather's most trusted seer. Like my grandfather, my father is what my people call a vorpal or death mage. He can also manipulate and completely control even the most shielded of minds. I am proud to say that he is the most skilled at this particular art. He also can control the workings of the mortal body, dulling the sensors of pain and even ending life. In battle, my father once made an entire battalion of mortal soldiers explode, although this can leave him spent and irritable if he does it a lot.
Forgive me! My sister has been with us and I haven't introduced her to you. Normally she would not be so quiet. Like all magefolk she is naturally inquisitive, but fortunately sleep keeps us silent. Her name is Kikina. She's younger than I am at fifteen, so you can understand why I am so protective of her. She's all I have right now, and we are as close as a brother and sister could ever be. I don't mind that she is asleep in my bed, because I know she is safe then.
My foster mother Arashi was concerned at first when she found us in bed together. It was quite embarrassing having to explain that incest is just as frowned upon in the mage world as it is here.
You seem very confused at what I am saying, let me explain:
Earth is actually two worlds, separated by an inter-dimensional barrier called a curtain wall. On this side, the inhabitants are predominately human, as you are undoubtedly aware. However on the other side is a much larger, semi-parallel world that is home to a group of species, mostly humanoid that are called the immortals.
As the name suggests, all the different species of immortals do not die…
No, that's wrong. Immortals can still die, but the experience of death is not permanent. We can fully regenerate from even the smallest remains. A pile of ash is a fantastic source, although it's advisable to keep well watered.
The races that are classed as immortals are: The Mage folk; the Dragon folk; the Sky folk, the Leviathan; the Phaerie; the Organa and the Demonae. Our world also houses a mortal race, the Ak'Zahar. They are in the world of immortals because of their evil and bloodthirsty nature. If they were to be in your world they would have slaughtered and eaten every living creature within one of your mortal years. On our world they can do no harm and can be controlled.
Of all the immortal races, the magefolk are the largest and probably the most successful. We have travelled and settled all over our own world and yours. We are a pioneer race, using our magic for the benefit and progression of the native people we live with. There are ten basic types of mage: Earth, fire, ice, air, vorpal, weather, night, solar, water and archival or time. Many mages are often specific to just one of these disciplines, but it is not uncommon for mages to master any combination of them and occasionally a few are born as full spectrum mages. My sister and I are two such mages, and we have perfected every last discipline of the mage spectrum. As well as this, all mages are born with psychic abilities, more advanced than any human has or will ever achieve; healing powers, which can be used on other people as well as ourselves; the ability to breathe water or air within the space of a breath, which is painful but useful; the ability to speak to the more intelligent beasts like cats, dogs, horses and most birds and fish, and the ability to speak all the languages of the different civilisations of both worlds. We can also breed with same-sex mates as well as with the more humanly traditional opposite-sex mates. The discipline/s that each mage can perfect is influenced by, but does not rely on, the abilities of their parents.
The dragonfolk are not actually the huge hulking lizard-like things human imagination devises. They imagine firedrakes, which are more closely related to my kind than dragons.
You humans were right about the lizard-like tail, the magnificent leathery wings and the peculiar spiny ears. But otherwise they are basically large humans. They are often unusually muscular and strong, or unnaturally thin and wise. There are only four types of dragon: Fire, Ice, Earth and Time. Unlike the Mages the Dragons are limited to a single discipline and the choosing of that discipline seems to be randomised and completely independent of any parental influence. Like the magefolk they have the same common abilities, including being unable to breed until mated with a single life partner who was preordained for you by fate. They also have the singular ability to spend their entire lives without food or water, as they can gain all their necessary sustenance from the air by filtering it through their immense wings. They communicate differently to all other species on the known planet. Only mages can understand and use their unusual and delightful methods of communication. Vocally, they speak by a combination of coloured lights leaving their mouth, which are combined by beautiful memories that surpass even the whale-song. Instead of writing they communicate by patterns of their highly prised jewels and precious stones that reflect the light to convey a message. The Dragonfolk prefer not to travel to the mortal world, so humans have been unable to identify them and therefore substituted the image of a firedrake.
The Skyfolk, who vainly prefer to be called the Angels, are basically humans with bird wings and tail feathers. Whilst they possess the psychic, mating and regeneration abilities of the immortals, they have no other magic, and their spectrum is military or spiritual and dependant on choice. When they ride horses, they refuse to ride anything other than their own breed of winged horse. The male horse called a Pegasus, and the female a Unicorn, the single ivory horn the only distinguishing detail, aside from the obvious, from the Pegasus. The skyfolk have a unique ability too, setting them apart from all other immortals. If their life partner is an immortal, they too have to be mated before they can breed. However, the Skyfolk can also take mortals as life partners, and do not need to be mated to breed. No other immortal can breed with a mortal because we cannot successfully mate with them. Mating involves the sharing of blood and soul force, a painful ritual that would kill a human within seconds. However, the Skyfolk have the ability to bypass the mating necessity to breed with humans. This gives them a greater ability to fit into human society without being detected. Like Dragons, Angels can conceal their wings and tails beneath their skin, even within the womb, or the egg, in the case of a Dragon.
The Leviathan are immortal whales. They can communicate through their minds as well as through the traditional whale song that even mortal whales use. Like all other immortals they can choose mates from different immortal races, although I do not know of any, and can breed with mates of the same sex. They have one disability that they are not physically able to travel on land, but their wisdom is far greater than all the wisdom of the other immortal races combined.
The Phaerie are what mortals call elves. They are always tall, often tanned and never unattractive, and in the human world are noticed because of this. They do not have pointy ears, although in their true forms the men have antlers. Their powers focus on the Earth, or from what they call the heavens. All the Phaerie respect the earth, believing that whatever is taken must be replaced to respect the balance of the Earth. They are also fascinated by music and dance, believing it to come from the heavens. Therefore, Phaerie dancers and musicians have very high status amongst their people. My sister's best friend, Li Ling, is a Phaerie dancer. She, like all the other dancers and musicians, dresses and behaves in a very lavish, colourful and flamboyant style. Her mother, who I might add is a man before I even think of continuing, is the most famous, and flamboyant, Phaerie dancer of them all. He and his mate lived on the mortal plane of China in around 150 AD. You may have heard of them as they contributed to the country's ancient history. Li Ling's mother, or maternal father if you prefer, is called Zhang He and her father is called Xiahou Dun. Ah, I can tell you have! Lord Dun is an earth Phaerie, preferring to fight. His regenerate ability meant that he could have restored his eye back within days, but chose not to until he had stepped out of history. To my memory he still wears an eye patch!
The Organa have never been able to integrate into your society, as it is fundamentally impossible to disguise the fact that you are a human plant. They are mostly green skinned, and the males have hair of leaves and vines while the women have hair made of fragrant petals. They have basically got the powers of an earth mage or dragon, only they are better at it. One of my friends back home is an Organa.
Finally, the Demonae. Ok if you prefer I shall say demons. Demons will look like whatever they want you humans to see them as. In reality they are just peculiar looking humanoids. They have a tendency to behave bizarrely, despite being very wise and powerful. They can manipulate and even bully humans, something I do not approve of. They are a fickle ally to have, immortal or mortal. They will show absolute loyalty to you right up until the moment they get bored. My mother has little if any time for them. I just think they're funny.
I'm sorry, but I have a strange feeling that you needed to know all of that, perhaps you are from the future or even an alternate universe, listening to me for reasons of your own. I'm afraid then, that I must explain the current situation that I am in, trapped with my little sister in a mortal world away from my home, my family and everything I know.
My mother, like I told you before, is a member of my peoples' royal family. My grandfather does not like using researchers and informants from outside the family circle. Many of our people, and peoples from the other mortal races, were returning from Japan rejuvenating either from death or very serious injury. Tales of a "Purity Alliance" reached my grandfather's ears from these people. It became apparent that some superstitious and self-righteous humans had declared all immortals as an abomination to the Buddha and were wiping them out with mysteriously deadly accuracy and efficiency. I was seven at the time, and Kikina five, when we had been sent with our parents to the mortal world to investigate. It had been the first time that I had passed through the curtain walls.
Living as a human family, we soon discovered that the man in charge was a fearsome looking man known as Soujiro Akechi. He had two sons with his wife Mitsuko: Shingemoto, who was eighteen, and Mitsuhide, who was thirteen. The family sought out and burned immortals on pyres that they called "purity pyres". To a seven-year-old, the pyres are the stuff of nightmares. Hideous metal frames make the skeleton, already some twenty feet tall and twelve feet wide. These are filled with wood and straw until they resemble a mountain. At the top is a large metal grid, and each square can fit a person. The purity pyres can incinerate twenty-five people at a time. They are hideous symbols of death, and I cannot look at them even now without wanting to run as far away from them as my legs will allow. I hate them, and I fear them. My sister feels the same, yet the two of us are forced to look at them with false admiration and hope like the mortals here do. Even our foster family pretends to, because if any of us revealed our true opinions of them, we would quickly find ourselves trying them out along with our foster family.
Soujiro has two major allies in his cause for human purity: the Saika clan and the Maeda clan. However, rumours were reaching my mother that Toshiie Maeda believed the pyres to be cruel and inhumane. Our information came from a very reliable source. Queen Gold-wing of the skyfolk had sent her own little family of spies to investigate the matter, due to the disappearance of their eldest princess Skylark. The Sanada family, as I later learned they were called, had quickly made themselves Soujiro's allies as a means of acquiring better information, which they shared with my mother at every opportunity.
However, our correspondence with the Sanada was cut short, as Soujiro sent them away to the other end of Japan to investigate suspected Demon communities. Six months later, one of the servants we had employed betrayed my parents to Soujiro for the reward of a small farm on the outskirts of Osaka. My mother and father barely had time to leave us in the safety of our human allies and new foster parents before they were captured. We had to attend my parents' trial, and I have never wanted to cry so much in my life. There was one thing that puzzled me. When my father saw Lady Akechi the surprise on his face and in his mind was so confusing. He recognised her, but had never been on the mortal plain before in his life. My mother recognised her too, but all I felt from her was disgust. It still puzzles me who she could look like.
My parents were tried and sentenced to the pyres in less than fifteen minutes. Arashi wanted to get us home, not wanting us to see our parents burn. However she was stopped by Lady Akechi and we had to watch our parents burn.
It was that day that I met Mitsuhide. His mother had insisted that the Mori family was to sit with them and I was seated next to him. As the pyres were lit my sister had burst into floods of tears and clung to me. I buried my face in her hair so that I could cry. Mitsuhide must have noticed my shaking and put his arm around me to offer me some comfort while I comforted my sister. Luckily it just looked like the flames scared us…
We were forced to grow up with Mitsuhide and see the Akechi family on an almost daily basis for ten years. But over time I found that I couldn't hate Mitsuhide. He has been brainwashed by his father all his life, and so there was no personal malice in his talk of the impurity of the immortals at any point. Then there was the matter of my sister and new family…
A year ago, Mitsuhide and I became an item. My sister and parents were initially furious, until I explained.
Soujiro is also famous for his temper, which blows whenever his family name is humiliated. Mitsuhide had asked me out and my initial reaction would have been to say no, until I remembered that he tells his father about anything that would upset him. He would be around here within an hour of finding out I had rejected his perfect son. Kikina has a temper as well, and she would not hesitate to defend me if she thought she had to. However, tact is not my sister's strong point, and her mouth often runs away with her when she is angry. I couldn't risk her revealing that we were mages in disguise, then both she and I and our entire foster family could measure our life on this earth in minutes. Mitsuhide hasn't done anything to me personally that would make me dislike him, so I had to say yes to him. We haven't gone further than kissing. Despite it not being his fault, I could never give my body to an Akechi after what they have done!
My parents have fully recovered from what happened, but now are known, so it is too dangerous for us if they return to claim their children back. However my sister and I have seen them many times for over six years now, under the pretence that we were out riding. I was eleven and my sister nine when my mother told me to meet her out at the river three miles east of the village. When we got there we were surprised to find that mother and father had formed an alliance with the thief Goemon Ishikawa and his lover, a girl who I recognised as Okuni. She is a dancer; I have been told that she is one of the best in the land. However, her considerable skill is as nothing when compared to the dancers of the Phaerie, and her voice gets on my nerves. It was a joyful reunion, as you would expect. Even if a child is separated from its mother the day it is born, it will never forget the sound of her voice. It was wonderful to hear my mother's voice again. It is deep for a woman's voice, and smoother than any I have ever heard. It's a pity she has a tendency to swear and curse enough to make even the most seasoned veteran soldier blush!
Last time we saw them I had to listen to both my parents drone on about how dreadful my choice of first boyfriend was, and with much embarrassment was forced into promising never to have sex with him willingly by my mother. My grandfather is preparing to act, and until then I am to try and keep my true identity a secret! It's so hard, especially remembering to recreate our human guises every morning.
My sister's hair, as you noticed, is light blue and spiky like my mother's. In her guise it is as smooth as mine and chestnut brown, like our foster father's. Mine has always been smooth and black, like my father's. I am image of him, apart from my eyes, which are different colours. My left eye is, and has always been dark blue, but my right is normally ivory. They are exactly like my mother's, and I wish that humans could have eyes like them as I think they are beautiful. During the day they are both blue, which I guess is pretty enough.
My mother has found more powerful allies than the Mori clan and Goemon's band of miscreants, allies that oppose and despise this so-called "Purity alliance". I'm not surprised that the majority is not human; my father rarely trusts them. My new-found friends and allies are: the Oda, a family of Phaerie who have lived, undetected hitherto, in the mortal world for centuries; the Hashiba, a family of Demons; the Saito, headed by a Demon and his Phaerie mate; the Date, a single family of Dragons; Shingen Takeda, the Dragon father of the Date leader's mate.
We were also surprised to find unlikely allies in Kenshin Uesugi and Tadakatsu Honda, a warrior fast becoming the strongest human in the land whilst trying to be a good father figure for his daughter Ina.
Lord Shingen recently told my mother that the Dragon folk's greatest seer, his older brother Amaurn Callisiorin, was on the mortal plain. He was seeking out his great-grandson, taken as a six-month-old baby twenty years ago, with the boy's mother. Amaurn's mother and father were killed by the Maeda whilst trying to flee after being discovered in Kyoto. Later they sensed their son was alive but so far have been unable to find him. My mother hopes to track him down and offer him our assistance in exchange for his.
I felt relieved that the Oda are our allies, considering that my sister and I serve Lord Nobunaga. My sister is Lady Oichi's bodyguard and recently they became lovers. They look so happy when they're together, and I hope I can have that someday.
Lord Nobunaga and I think it ironic that Soujiro allowed his precious sons to serve under some of the very people he wished dead. Soon after his allegiance to my mother, Nobunaga made me his personal bodyguard. This protected me from the increasingly demanding advances Mitsuhide has started making towards me, and enabled me to see the irritation on Mitsuhide's face when he gave us orders that would keep him from jumping me yet again. He is now determined that Nobunaga wants me for his own, and Nobunaga seems quite happy to let him believe that judging by the way he pretends to flirt with me!
We are playing a waiting game, and we will continue to do so until my grandfather contacts me personally. He and the other leaders of the immortal races are planning to deal with Soujiro and his alliance as soon as possible, but at the moment are trying to find a way to minimise the harm done to innocent humans. I think Soujiro would find this hard to believe.
But until then, we must wait, and hope we aren't found out. Even Lord Shingen and my friend Yukimura have to be careful, and they seem the best at playing human…
I think I have told you everything you need to know about me. I am tired, and need to sleep now, but I have no doubt we will see each other again. Until then, goodnight.
There's the Prologue sorted. In Chapter One, Kikina and Oichi's relationship becomes more serious, Mitsuhide tries to convince Ranmaru to sleep with him, and a fight with Hanzo Hattori leads to tragedy…
Love to Vchan, I'll make Magoichi suffer and just for you I'll spread it over as many chapters as is possible!! XxX
Ranmaru: ~* Walks into room *~ By Aurian, you've finished?
Me: Yep! I feel so proud! Remember to review people!
