The death and return of Megaman
A story by Dragonman
Chapter One
A Heroes Boredom
Megaman
was bored. It had been months since Dr. Wily had died when his own lab exploded
around him. Protoman had vanished again, and Duo had never come back. So all he
had to do all day was help Dr. Light around the lab. The work was fascinating,
but not what he was used to. Dr. Light was building a new kind of robot. He
called it a Reploid. It would be able to feel and think, making its own
decisions. However, it would have to be tested thoroughly. Dr. Light said it
would take 30 years before they could be sure of the Reploids-Dr Light called
him “X”- safety. They worried that he might break the first law of robotics. ‘A
robot must never harm, or through inaction harm, a human being.’ Though he
acted otherwise, Dr. Light was getting very old. His 79th birthday
was coming up. Megaman took on more and more of the physical labor in the lab.
At least it was something to do.
“Doctor?”
he asked one day, “would it be possible to download myself into a Reploid body
if X turns out all right?”
Dr.
Light looked at him thoughtfully.
“Yes,
I believe so,” he said in a slight British accent, “your program is highly
adaptable and I intended to download you at first. But, if the body were to
fail, you would be lost, and I couldn’t live with that.”
They
were putting the finishing touches on X as they spoke. He looked just like
Megaman, down to the blue armor. Though it had more hues in different places
and was a different alloy, he could pass as Megaman himself. One day, while
cleaning up in the lab after X’s completion, he thought he saw something move
near X. He got near, looking closely for what moved. Movement
again. He got even closer. X’s fingers twitched. Megaman drew back,
startled. X’s eyes opened, and Megaman was surprised to see the human softness
and warm glow in X’s eyes. X seemed so much more human than he…
“Megaman!”
Megaman
jumped. Dr. Light strode into the lab.
“What
are you doing?! I said X wasn’t to be activated for thirty years!” he said,
switching X off.
Before
he did, Mega could have sworn he heard X say “Brother?”
A Fight And
an Answer
“Bass, why?” Megaman gasped from the floor.
Bass
looked at him coldly.
“Because
I plan on beating you,” he said, looking on the blue bombers fallen form.
He
raised his buster arm.
“Time’s
just run out for you, Megaman. Now DIE!”
A
shot emerged from the black barrel. There was a red blur in front of it,
deflecting it to the ceiling.
“What the?!” Bass shouted angrily.
“Maybe
you should play nice, Bass,” a voice said above them.
They
looked up.
“Protoman!”
they said, Megaman gasping, Bass growling.
Protoman
smirked and jumped to the ground. His plasma shield was on his arm, and his
buster aimed at Bass.
“See
ya!” and with that a powerful blast erupted from his buster, blowing Bass to
pieces.
His
head sparked as it slowly lost power.
“So…(spark)I’ve…lost…(sizzle)…heh…heh…heeehhh…”
Bass’
eyes dimmed, and faded.
Protoman
looked at his fallen brother and picked him up.
“Thanks
Protoman, can you get me back to Dr. Light?”
“Sure,
hold on!”
“Megaman! What happened?” Dr. Light cried as Protoman put him down on the table.
“Bass, was attacking a museum.”
Protoman
looked at Dr. Light.
“Is
there anything you can do?” he asked.
Dr.
Light shook his head.
“No,
his systems are fried. Its amazing he survived so
far.”
Dr.
Light’s face was clouded, his eyes bleak.
Megaman
spoke up.
“Doctor,
put me in a capsule.”
“What
do you mean?” Doctor Light asked.
“Put
me in a capsule, like X’s, and after 40 years, maybe, make my capsule let out a
beacon. If X worked out, they can download me into a Reploid body.”
Dr. Light brightened a bit.
“Sound
plan, but if X failed…” his voice trailed off.
“I
know, I know. I’d be out of luck. But if it worked…”
“All
right, I do have another capsule, I do hope you’re
right.”
Dr. Light and Protoman laid Megaman gently into the capsule. Sealing it, the
capsule put Megaman in stasis.
“Lets hope this works Protoman.”
“I
know Doc, I know.”
Old Enemy, Older Friend
~40
years later~
“Zero! Take out the Maverick over there!”
“Sure
thing X!” Zero called, red armor flashing in the desert sun.
His
Z-saber ripped through the Maverick spider Reploids armor like it was warm
butter. X’s buster was firing huge blasts at a large seal-like Reploid.
“Huh, you think puny bolts can hurt me?” the seal Reploid cried.
“Maybe
this can,” Zero said, leaping on its back.
His
saber flashed again, and its head flew from the force of Zero’s blow. The two
friends stood there, gasping, looking at the carnage around them. Reploid
bodies littered the ground, pieces sticking up in the blazing sun, shimmering
with the deserts heat. X activated his com-link.
“X
and Zero here, Mavericks met and disposed of. Get a clean-up crew out here.”
“Roger
that X. Got new orders for you. There is a strange beacon that just activated
about 500 yards south of you. The tag is Dr. Lights and its code appears to be
urgent. Get out there and investigate. HQ out.”
X
sighed. “Do we ever get a break Zero?” he asked.
“Not
that I ever remember,” Zero said with a grin, “Race you?”
“You’re
on!” X said, grinning himself.
They
dashed over the hot sand, rapidly nearing the signal. They stopped by the
broadcast point. X and Zero shared a look.
“Your
creator, you dig,” Zero said, resting against a rock.
X
fired his buster carefully, at a low setting. Dirt flew as he excavated. A
capsule came into view. X carefully pulled it out of the pit.
“It
looks like my capsule,” he said, looking it over.
He
activated the terminal on the side. Data flowed across the screen. His jaw
fell.
“No
way!” he murmured.
“What?”
Zero said, getting up from the rock.
“According
to this, the occupant is…” X trailed off.
“Who?” Zero demanded, somewhat impatiently.
“My older brother, the original Megaman.”
Zero
stared at X.
“Megaman? The original robot hero? I thought he had
been killed long ago.”
“So
did I, but Dr. Light put him in this capsule, and
according to the directions, ‘if X is proven a success, then create a Reploid
body for Megaman, so he can continue to serve humanity.’ My brother brought
back as a Reploid, Zero, we’d be unbeatable!”
“What, we aren’t already?”
“If
we can bring back Megaman, with all his powers, into a body like mine, then
Sigma would never stand a chance against us again!”
Zero
looked thoughtful.
“Yeah,
of late he has been going a bit overboard, what with tricking the Repliforce, Gate, and everything else.”
“But
that was only the beginning my dear foes!” a deep voice said behind them.
They
wheeled around, weapons ready. There stood Sigma, with a small force of
Reploids around him. He was leering at the two Hunters.
“Hand
over the capsule and I’ll let you live, for now.”
“There
is no way you are getting Megaman!” X yelled angrily.
He
loosed a fully charged buster shat directly at Sigma’s head. Sigma phased to
the right, dodging the blow.
“Go
my faithful servants, strike down these fools, and bring me that capsule!”
The
horde of Mavericks rushed X and Zero. Explosions and dust filled the air as the
two heroes fought against the evil warriors. The field cleared, and only blue
and red armor could be seen intact on the battlefield. Sigma was gone.
“The capsule!” X cried, looking about.
It,
too, was gone. X cried out his frustration, pounding the soil as he sank to his
knees in despair.
“What
will Sigma do to him?” X said brokenly.
“I
don’t know, but we had better stop him before he finishes whatever he’s
planning,” Zero said grimly.
Zero
called HQ, and they were Teleported back to base.
Mindless Return
“ALERT! ALERT! ALL MAVERICK HUNTERS TO STATION! ALERT! ALERT!” the klaxon
wailed.
X
ran to the control room.
“Whats
going on?” he asked the ops officer.
“Some
new Maverick is tearing up downtown London. X and Zero, take
care of it.”
X
nodded, and raced to the transporter platform. Zero was waiting. The bright
flash of light filled the room, and then they were in London. They looked
around.
“Where
is it?” Zero mumbled.
A
shot pierced the air, barely missing Zero’s head. X wheeled around. From the
flames a figure emerged, the red-hot flames reflecting off icy blue armor. It
was a near twin of X, except for the Sigma logo on its chest. It raised its
buster.
“You
are the targets my master has designated as being evil,” the Reploid said, “you will be destroyed, along with the evil people in this city.”
X
raised his own buster and Zero readied his saber. X fired, the Maverick ducking beneath the blast. Zero dashed forward,
saber held high. The Maverick pulled a handle from its back, creating a blue
energy blade. Blue and green beams crossed as Zero and the Maverick collided.
The blue Maverick pushed Zero away with ease.
“What?
How could that thing be so powerful?” Zero said.
“You
like it?” a voice called out.
The
blue Maverick leaped into the air and landed on a building, next to a familiar
face.
“Don’t
you recognize him X?” Sigma said with a twisted, evil grin.
“Should
I?” X said.
“Yes,
you should be able to recognize him, after all, he’s
family!”
“WHAT!”
X gasped in horror.
“Yes
X, Megaman has been upgraded. I took the data on you and Zero and combined the
two. He is the perfect warrior. Zero’s speed, agility, and
ability with the blade. And your adaptability,
perseverance, and over all toughness. Meet Megaman version 2.0 hah hah
hah hah!”
“Sigma,”
X said, balling his free hand into a fist, “So help me, I’ll retire you
permanently myself!”
X
launched himself at Sigma, buster firing wildly. Megaman blocked his way.
“Brother,
don’t you recognize me? I’m X, Dr Light’s last
creation. You yourself helped build me!”
A
faint look of recognition appeared on Megaman's face.
“X…”
he said softly.
His
gaze hardened again.
“I
don’t know any Dr Light, and if he created an evil like you than he must be
insane!”
“Megaman,
he created you too. You were originally made 50 years ago!”
Again,
a faint look of recognition spread across Megaman's face.
“Roll,
Rush, Protoman, Dr Light, X… my family…”
Sigma
pressed a control on his arm. Megaman’s face grew cold again.
“I
was made by the savior Sigma, who will bring justice to the world!” he cried.
“Hmm…”
Sigma said, “It seems that stubbornness runs in the family X, its taking all the influence of my mind control chip just to
keep his personality at bay. And to think, the technology is 50 years beyond
him…”
“Let
my brother go Sigma!” X cried.
“Heh,
you want him, come get him,” Sigma said.
“Come
Megaman, we’ve made our point.”
“Yes
Master,” Megaman said, following Sigma into the distance.
“Megaman,
wait!” X called desperately.
Megaman
looked over his shoulder. The look of familiarity lasted longer, but there was
also a look of anger and frustration and behind it, fear. Again, it lasted only
for a few seconds. His gaze returned to Sigma and he moved on.
“Damn
it! Damn it damn damn damn it!” X shouted, punching
the wall with each oath.
Zero
looked on.
“X,
what more could you have done? What other choice did
you have?”
“One,”
he said softly, “I could have retired him.”
Zero
was taken aback at this.
“But,
you saw that he started to recognize you. You heard Sigma say that he was under
mind control. If we can break that…”
“Yes!
If we break Sigmas hold, we can free him!”
Reunion
X
paced the hall outside Ops at HQ. The door slid open. Zero steeped through the
portal, putting his hand on X’s shoulder.
“So far, we have no trace of either Megaman or Sigma. But,” and he stood in front
of X, “we can break his hold on Megaman, if we can hit him with a Soul Body and
Kuuenbu at the same time.”
X looked hopeful.
“So
all we need to do is practice so we can hit him simultaneously.”
Zero grinned.
“Practice?”
he said sardonically.
“Yeah practice,” X said, wagging his finger at him. “You’re not dodging this time, we need to practice so we don’t mess up our only
chance.”
Zero
shrugged.
“This
shouldn’t take long.”
“Man,
do we need to do this again?” Zero shouted a few hours later.
X
grinned.
“What
happened to ‘this shouldn’t take long’?”
Zero
ground his teeth.
“All
right, lets go again.”
X
dashed to one side of the practice bot, while Zero dashed to the other. X fired
a shimmering ball that coalesced into a shimmering shadow of X. It dashed at the
practice bot while Zero leaped into the air. With a green flash his Z-saber was
in his hand. He flipped in midair, striking the practice bot just as the Soul
Body ran into it. The bot staggered.
“Perfect hit! Perfect hit! Perrrrfeeect…hiiiiiiiiitttttt….”and with that the bot
fell apart.
Zero landed perfectly, sheathing his saber.
“There,
satisfied?”
“Aren’t
I always?” X shot back, grinning like a fool.
The
klaxon sounded.
“X!
Zero! Megaman has been spotted in Baltimore! Report to the transporter on the double!”
the Ops officer called over the intercom.
“Time
to dance,” Zero said, running through the corridor.
“Lets hope this works,” X replied.
Moments
later they were in Baltimore, outside what used to be
Camden Yards. The baseball stadium had fallen into disrepair after the team was
disbanded. All that was standing was one wall, and the old scoreboard. They
looked around, trying to find Megaman. A huge orange fireball came roaring at
them. They leaped to the side, bringing their weapons to bear. Megaman stood a
few yards away, his blue armor now a brilliant orange.
“I
think I recognize that move. Its Pharaoh Shot, one of his old moves,” X said.
“Wonderful,”
Zero muttered, “As if he wasn’t strong enough.”
Megaman’s
armor shimmered, turning a bright green. He fired a missile into the air. After
a moment, it started raining. Wherever the rain hit X or Zero, their armor
smoked.
“Acid
Rain too?” X said, gritting his teeth.
“X,
we better do this now before he wipes us out!” Zero said, raising his saber.
Zero
dashed left while X dashed to the right. Megaman looked at both of them,
confused by their tactic. Zero leaped into the air, while X’s buster emitted a
shimmering ball of light. The ball formed into a shadow of X, and it dashed at
Megaman. Megaman started to move, but it was to late.
Zero’s saber hit his arm just as the Soul Body ran head on into him. He
screamed in agony, his right arm falling to the ground. His left hand clutched
his head, obviously in extreme pain. With a strangled moan he fell to the
ground, shivering. X knelt beside him, while Zero held his saber ready in case
it didn’t work. X gently put his hand on Megaman’s back.
“Megaman?”
he queried softly.
With
a groan, Megaman rolled over. His cobalt blue eyes scanned X’s face.
“Is…is
it you, X?” he said, with a look of faint recognition.
X
nodded.
Megaman
smiled. His eyes teared up and his hand clenched.
“It
worked Doctor, it worked.”
And with that Megaman started crying, X pulled Megaman to him, holding him.
“X, am I in a Reploid body?” Megaman said.
“Yeah,
you are,” was the gentle reply.
“So
that’s, why I can cry.”
Zero
activated his com-link
“Zero
here, mission accomplished. Three to teleport, have a repair team on standby.”
“Roger Zero, and tell X that we’re happy for him back here.”
“I
will.”
With a brief flash, the three Reploids teleported back to HQ.
“Damn
you X! Damn you Zero! He was mine, MINE DAMN YOU!” Sigma ranted from the top of
the scoreboard. He had arrived too late to stop them from taking his greatest
creation.
“I
will get you X, you and Zero and even Megaman if he gets in my way. You can
count on it!” He seemed to shimmer in midair, then
vanished, leaving behind a chilling promise.
