Silenced

Author’s Notes: I wrote and finished this piece way
back in April, but many things came up and I only got around to uploading it
now.
This takes place in between the tasks Gaspar bid them to see
to before facing the Black Omen and Lavos. This piece is set after Seek and You Shall Find.
I also realized belatedly that I should label this fic (and
the rest of my MagusxMarle pieces) as “slightly (or perhaps totally) AU.”
*sheepish grin*
Magus and Marle realize that there are many things that
cannot be silenced.
-----
The forest was quiet, save for the
delicate rustling of leaves in the evening breeze and the whistle of the wind
as it swept through the treetops.
Magus watched the members of the
party as they all slumbered before the fading fire, too preoccupied by his
thoughts to join them as they rested and recuperated. The final confrontation
with Lavos was drawing ever nearer, making him all the more anxious, all the
more desirous to deal with the monster once and for all.
He had waited for many a year,
training himself in armed combat and in sorcery, gathering his strength and his
resources so that he could vanquish Lavos. He had believed that he could do it
on his own, unaided; even Ozzie, Flea, and Slash—before the confrontation in
Ozzie’s Fort—were not part of his vengeful opus: they were his allies, but
never his true companions. However, faced with Lavos as his grown self—as the
Prophet of the Kingdom
of Zeal—he realized that
Lavos’ power was too great, even for the almighty Sorcerer-General Magus. The
knowledge had driven him to rage and despair.
All of them were at the mercy of
Lavos. He had watched as the monster corrupted his mother, destroyed his
kingdom . . . and in their last battle, he had seen it completely erase Crono,
as if he had never existed.
He did not know at the time what it
was exactly that drove him to join Glenn and Marle after their revelations atop
North Cape. Now, as he ruminated, he realized
that it was probably because he felt the same powerlessness that Glenn and
Marle felt after Crono’s death, as well as the almost desperate need to take
action, even if they were uncertain as to what the action would be. He told
them of his knowledge of Gaspar, and their journey together started there.
Magus did not know if they would all
survive the final battle with Lavos. They had all watched as it killed Crono.
None of them were safe from that fate. Yet they were all going to try anyway,
with their individual strengths and weaknesses, and Magus knew with a certainty
that they stood a better chance together. Still, he feared, despite himself.
Feared for himself, and feared for the party . . . one member in particular.
His crimson gaze flickered upon Marle as she slept, soft and innocent in the
muted moonlight, and a bitter sweetness stole into his chest.
It was not a week ago when they’d
sought lodging and rest in his lair. Not one week ago when she’d come to his
chambers in the night. However, the days that followed afterwards kept them
apart, for there was much to be done, and much to see to. That did not keep his
thoughts from her, though, nor his eyes, nor his dreams.
He shook his head with confusion and
puzzlement, wondering about a number of things, when a strange noise roused him
from his reverie. He watched as Lucca
left to investigate. Robo followed her afterwards, and Magus wondered if he
should as well. However, he knew that the two of them could take care of
themselves. Soon enough, in less than five minutes, the two of them returned
and settled down to sleep once again. Magus watched as Lucca lingered
hesitantly before Crono’s sleeping form until she finally huddled up beside
him, the telltale hiccups of her weeping finally fading as she pressed her
forehead to his and slipped into sleep. He wondered idly what it was that she’d
seen, but he was not one to pry. If she would tell them in the morning, so be
it. If not, then her business was her own.
Magus released a quiet sigh and
leaned against the trunk upon which he’d been resting, raising his eyes to the
full moon overhead, settling once again into his thoughts.
Marle stirred in her sleep, her
dreams of darkness and screaming and death, ugly and writhing, opening its
cruel, shrieking jowls to engulf the fading world . . .
Stifling a scream as she returned to
consciousness abruptly, she bit her lip to quiet herself, wincing and
immediately tasting the coppery tang of blood. It was just a dream, she told
herself, relaxing somewhat into the grassy forest floor.
Hesitantly, she glanced at her
companions to see if she’d wakened them somehow. To her relief, they were all
asleep. Her eyes landed on Crono’s and Lucca’s
forms, lying side-by-side, their foreheads together, fingers laced in one
another’s. She covered her mouth to stifle a giggle. All of his friends loved
and admired Crono, and Marle knew that she herself doted on him immensely.
However, they all loved him differently, and Marle knew for herself that she
loved him as a savior and as a dear, dear
friend, despite what others believed. He had made her mundane life so much more
colorful by taking her away from the oppressive palace life she once had and
onto quite a journey. He was almost her lifeline. However, she did not think
that she loved him like Lucca
did; hers was a different kind of love. Like . . . friendship turned into love love.
Marle resisted the urge to giggle
some more. It was a cute idea. Love
love . . .
Her gaze drifted to Magus. The sight
almost took her breath away. She’d believed him to be asleep, but apparently
she was wrong. He stood beneath the sheltering boughs of a large tree, majestic
and beautiful even in the darkness, the moonlight and its shadows drawing
patterns upon his skin and weaving silver into his hair. He was gazing up at
the indigo night sky, seemingly lost in his thoughts.
Rising to her feet, Marle approached
him, proffering him a small smile when his gaze flicked to her. He watched her
almost stoically as she stepped closer to him.
“Still awake?” she whispered as she
looked up at him, his frame seeming to loom over hers even more, as he was
elevated upon the protruding roots of the large tree he had been leaning upon.
“Same as you are,” he returned, a
ghost of a smile lingering upon his lips.
She linked her arms behind her back,
almost embarrassedly. “I had a nightmare . . .” she mumbled.
His gaze seemed to soften, and he
stepped down from his pedestal. Even then, he towered over her by shoulders and
a head. “Dreams cannot harm you,” he told her quietly.
“I know . . .” Marle agreed, lowering
her head. “Still . . .” Without her thinking about it, she wrapped her arms
around him and buried her face in his chest. She felt more than heard his quiet
surprise, and sighed with delight as he returned the embrace, keeping her
close.
“You know, I’ve missed you,” she told
him softly.
“I have been here,” Magus murmured.
She knew that he had meant for his words to be wry, but she did not miss the
resignation in his timbre as well.
“We’ve just been so busy lately,” Marle
mumbled into his chest. “I’m glad that we can talk now, at least . . . though
not for long, we need to rest up for tomorrow. . . .”
She quieted as he raised a hand to
stroke her hair, carefully smoothing over the golden tresses. She let out a
ticklish giggle despite herself as his gloved palm stroked upwards to cushion her
nape, but all laughter was lost as he leaned down and pressed his lips against
hers in a claiming kiss that warmed her entire body and made her head spin.
Magus swallowed the soft noises that
slipped past her lips as he kissed her thoroughly, stifling his own moans as
she arched against him and gasped into his mouth.
Every fiber in his body sang, and
every nerve trembled with taut anticipation. He wanted her—had wanted her since that fateful evening in his chambers after
which she was stolen from him by their busy schedule.
Her nimble fingers were now fumbling
with the ties of his armor as they kissed, and her small cry of frustration as
she fumbled at the buckles cut through his pleasure-fogged mind. Letting out a
ragged gasp, he pulled away from her, raking his hands through his hair to calm
himself. She blinked at him with surprise, hurt settling into those wide, fathomless
eyes.
Magus shook his head and grasped her
shoulders gently. “Are you sure that you want to proceed with this?” he asked
her quietly.
Marle gave him a small, determined
nod.
“Then not here . . . we’ll wake
everyone,” he whispered to her, quelling her fears with a tiny kiss onto her
earlobe.
“Oh . . . okay,” Marle said, nodding
to indicate that she understood. She cast hesitant looks around her party
members and let out a sigh of relief and a soft giggle when she saw that they
were all still asleep.
“Come . . . let us move some distance
away.” Magus extended his hand to her; Marle threaded her tiny fingers into
his, and the two of them followed the path.
A few yards away and they came to
another clearing similar to the one that the others occupied. It was smaller,
but it was large enough for the both of them. Unbeknownst to the both of them,
it was the clearing in which Lucca
had just seen the time gate which had sealed itself in the course of the
previous events.
“We’ll still have to be quiet,” Magus
told her, laying a gloved finger atop her rosebud lips. She nodded in
agreement, her emerald eyes wide and trusting.
Without another word, Magus located
the buckle that Marle had previously been struggling with. He undid it with
methodical efficiency, and Marle watched him with admiration and wonder as he
began to work on removing all of his trappings. She stilled him with a hand on
his arm and gave him a quick kiss before she undid her hair and began to
unbuckle her own armor.
Amidst kisses they managed to rid
each other of all clothing. The first press of naked flesh upon flesh made them
both gasp, made them tangle their fingers in one another’s hair as mouths
fused, whimpers and moans swallowed by the other.
“The spell,” she murmured against
him, and he nodded swiftly: with a whispered word and a pulse of light, the
spell was cast, and she was protected for the evening.
Magus pulled away from her briefly to
retrieve his cloak. With a quick flick of his wrists, he had it spread across
the grass. Silently, he gestured to Marle. Nodding somewhat shyly, she lay
across the heavy fabric, letting out a soft noise of appreciation as the cool
cloth slid almost lovingly against her bare skin. Magus admired her naked form,
pale and small against his cloak; it was still larger than her, and an image of
her swathed in nothing but the ruby bolts of brocade made him smirk.
He lay atop her, his hair falling
around them, shrouding them in a world of shadows and silver-cerulean that was
simply of their own making. Lowering his head to hers, he claimed her lips in a
thorough kiss that was coaxing and possessive, all heat and want and desire,
groaning as she arched against him, pressing the soft curves of her body into
the hard plains of his. He drew his palms down her body, eliciting a gasp when
he cupped the softness of her breast and drew his fingers delicately against
the turgid bud while lowering his head to close his mouth gently around
another. Her skin was soft and smooth, cool and velvety underneath the gentle
caress of his lips and tongue and hands, and she writhed beneath him as he
learned of her with taste and touch and sensation. At the same time, Magus was
further learning of his own reactions to her as his body ached and tightened in
response to her whimpered moans.
Just as his fingers had glided down
to that sacred niche between her legs, Marle managed to gasp out, “Wait—Please,
Magus, just—”
Drawing his mouth away from her, he
glanced up at her in concern.
She gave him a shy smile, immediately
quelling his disquiet. “Um . . . do you mind if I . . .” She licked her lips,
and Magus’s breath hitched in his throat. “I . . . would it be okay if . . . I
want to try to . . . you know, make you feel . . . good,” she concluded coyly,
still blushing under the heated intensity of his gaze.
A flash of fire made him moan softly
as he remembered the feel of her hand against him. Raising his gaze to hers and
finding there an earnest excitement that made his blood rush through his veins,
he nodded once, warmth of another kind blooming in his chest as she gave him a
radiant smile.
Shifting so that he could lie onto
his back, Magus now stretched out onto the cloak while Marle settled hesitantly
onto her knees beside him, the uncertainty playing vividly on her features.
Magus raised a hand to her face and traced the curve of cheek tenderly, to which
she responded by pressing a light kiss onto his fingers. Entwining the same
hand through her long, golden hair, he coaxed her down onto him to receive a
kiss, and she let out a hushed moan as his hands slid against the slope of her
back, pulling her closer to him.
Pulling away slightly, Marle gazed at
him bashfully, emerald eyes glimmering in the moonlit darkness of the clearing.
He leaned up to brush his mouth against hers once again gently before he
settled back down, a faint smile both of fondness and encouragement ghosting
upon his lips. Marle let out another giggle, one which was easily lost in his
rumbling groan as she dusted a tiny kiss onto his ear, tongue flickering
hesitantly against his earring.
Her mouth was soft and warm against
his skin, seeming to sear his flesh. He let out a gasping moan as she bit
gently against his shoulder, and clenched his hands into the cloth beneath him
as she laved the spot with her tongue. Her tiny hands, too, wrecked havoc upon
him as they traced and smoothed over each slope and plain.
Magus let out a choked cry when her
hands closed around him, prying eyes open which he had not noticed that he’d
clenched shut. Marle was gazing at him raptly, watching his reactions as she
began to stroke him in the familiar and glorious rhythm that had him writhing
under her ministrations.
He watched with pleasure-clouded eyes
as she lowered her head, curiosity written in her eyes . . .
Magus bit back a groan as her mouth
closed around him, all warm and soft and tight. She seemed to be uncomfortable
at first, but easily took to the task, resuming the tempo she’d had earlier
with her hands.
He cried out her name brokenly as she
quickened the pace, and Magus could do nothing but move beneath her, throwing
his head back and gasping for air as that almost painful crescendo of heat and
sensation built in his flesh.
“Marle—stop—wait!” he managed to get
out through gritted teeth just as he’d almost reached the pinnacle, urging her
jaw away determinedly. “Wait!”
Confused, Marle leaned backwards,
tilting her head so that she could look at him uncertainly. Magus urged her
back up, assuaging her insecurity with a claiming, searing kiss.
“Inside,” he breathed against her lips,
eliciting a quiet whimper.
Nodding, Marle shifted atop him so
that her hips were fitted snugly against his. Guiding him carefully to her, all
it took was a slow push, and he was sheathed inside, biting back a husky moan
as she sank onto him.
Raising herself up, Marle placed her
hands upon his chest and slowly began to move, gasping as he surged beneath her
and into her, hitting that spot that made her vision swim and her body resonate
with delight.
Wanting to see him in the throes of
pleasure, Marle forced her eyes open and unwittingly let out a whimper at the
sight of Magus beneath her: head thrown back, fangs bared, every muscle locked
and corded with the painful bliss as he fought for control. His hands clenched
and unclenched in the material of his own cloak as he fought for control, his
body still betraying him as it met hers thrust for thrust.
When he fixed his hungry gaze onto
her, Marle’s breath caught in her throat when saw that his crimson eyes had
deepened to a near black with desire. Lowering herself to him, she caught his
lips in a fervid kiss, letting out a mewling gasp as the position intensified
the sensations pounding and rushing through her. He groaned in response, the
sound swallowed by her kiss, as they moved and met, striving towards the peak together.
Marle could feel the familiar coil
tightening and the fire building in her gut. It was wending higher and higher,
making her light-headed as the sensations raced through her in a rising
maelstrom. “Magus, I—you feel so—”
And before she could complete her statement, she was there, trembling with climax as she tightened around him.
Awash in color and light, Marle
shivered as the sensations tightened to one, final coil before bursting into
life, flaring out from the pit of her stomach into what seemed like eternity.
Her gasp of delight was lost in Magus’ kiss as he claimed her lips, thrusting
into her as he, too, shuddered in glorious release. She clung to him as the
aftershocks wracked her body, delighting as his arms went around her and
pressed her close, whimpering as the heated shudders faded into the warm,
satiny afterglow.
They lay there in silence, she atop
him, recovering their breaths and letting the breeze cool their skin. He idly
stroked her hair, making her murmur with satisfaction as he threaded through
the golden tresses.
A moment later, Marle couldn’t help
as the familiar tickle of laughter blossomed in her throat. She let out a
giggle and looked up at Magus. He arched a brow in question, a faint smile
quirking at his mouth.
“Were we quiet enough?” she asked
sheepishly.
He looked wryly amused. Marle
realized with a burst of warmth in her stomach that she loved it when he was amused. “I doubt it,” he told her as his hands
snaked to her nape, pulling her close as he gave her a lingering kiss. Marle’s
head swam as his lips moved over hers, possessive and intense, coaxing and
seductive and tender all at once. It was amazing how he could hold her in
thrall with a single kiss.
“How about,” Marle mumbled in between
kisses and giggles, “that we try to be quiet the second time around?” She
pulled back from him with a mischievous grin, her heart beating faster when she
saw his gaze darken with desire. “This time with you on top again,” she
suggested with a decisive nod, watching with breathless delight as the hunger
smoldered to life once again in his eyes.
Marle’s world suddenly slipped out
from underneath her as he wordlessly flipped her over, quickly rising over her
onto his elbows, his long hair tickling her face. Her laughter quickly changed
to soft mewls as he coaxed her back to passion with mouth, tongue, teeth, and
hands.
She realized with a flash of liquid
heat that he controlled her completely and utterly. She was all but helpless
under his touch and caress—not because he did not give her the option of
control, but because she realized that she wanted to please him, to be the
cause of his pleasure and his release. Even atop him, her movements were not
just for her own gratification but for his—because something inside made her want to make him happy. Her desire to
please him held her in thrall, made him
hold her in thrall, made her subject to none other but him. It was both a
frightening and exhilarating feeling.
Something inside . . .
Marle stilled beneath him. Love love . . .
Magus raised his head to watch Marle
and saw that she was looking at him as if she’d seen him anew; her eyes were
bright with realization, cheeks flushed with the thrill of an epiphany.
He laid a small kiss onto her
shoulder. “What is it, Marle?” he questioned, the timbre of his words soft and
warm.
“I think . . . I have something to
say . . .” she trailed off, and swallowed. Shyness suddenly stole over then,
and she lowered her gaze, the blush of embarrassment now surfacing upon her pale
cheeks.
And Magus knew what it was that she
meant to say. Sweet, honeyed warmth burst inside him, spreading through his
veins like the most potent wine.
She pressed her lips against his ear
and whispered the words that had been lingering between them for the past
fortnight, the words that had been the motivation behind each kiss, each
caress, each partaking and giving of flesh, and each breathless flight to the
star-dusted pinnacle.
He responded by claiming her lips in
a heated kiss, mouths fusing together, limbs and fingers entwining as an
entirely new passion blazed to life between them. And, amidst kisses, he
whispered the same in return, making her gasp with joy and yearning.
Magus drew back slightly, gazing at
her beneath the silvery fall of his azure-limned hair. She looked back up at
him, a contented smile flitting upon her lips, eyes glimmering emerald, creamy
skin supple and inviting in the muted moonlight. She raised a quivering hand to
his face, fingertips tracing the curve of his cheek before threading through
his silken hair. Brushing a light kiss upon her wrist, he descended once again,
the soft warmth of his mouth ensconcing hers in a new kiss of promise and
longing.
She gasped when he cupped her
breasts, squirmed when he drew his palms down the smoothness of her belly, and trembled
with bated breath when he gently nudged her thighs apart, settling himself into
the cradle of womanhood between her legs. His body was taut with yearning, his
skin ablaze with fire and starlight, but something pressed upon him to draw out
the moment, to linger upon the sensations.
He paused, hovering before her,
drinking in the sight of her bright starlit eyes, wide and trusting in the dark
of the glade. Something melted inside him then, and he claimed her lips in a
gentle kiss as he pushed into her, his rasping moan melding with her whimper as
she sheathed him tightly.
Slowly, he began to move, remembering
their earlier premise and clenching his jaw to quiet his moans as the desire
blazed to an inferno in his skin. Underneath him, soft cries of pleasure
slipped from Marle’s lips as she clung to him, her face against his chest,
hands fisting in his hair and against his back as she strove to move in tandem
with his gentle thrusts.
Neither of them made to quicken their
movements, slowly but steadily allowing the pleasure to build and tighten.
Soon, Marle was sobbing against him, gasping for breath as he rocked into her.
“Please . . .” she whispered, barely audible, eliciting a shuddering breath
from him as she embraced him tightly.
Magus bit back a groan as the
sensations pooled in the pit of his stomach, threatening to inundate him in the
fiery deluge of release. She was of softness and heat, velvet and fire; her
hushed cries and pleas further inflamed his senses and drove him steadily to
completion.
Throwing her head back in a keening
cry, Marle unerringly found his mouth in a kiss of abandon and surrender as she
came, clenching around him in the throes of her release. The contact of her
lips against his made him rasp her name as his own pleasure overtook him and
forced him to the glorious peak.
Fire flared and swirled behind his
closed lids as she tightened around him, and he surged into her, gasping her
name and faintly hearing her cry out his own as the blaze raged and exploded
into a cosmos that was their all their own before fading into the gentle pearlescent
throb and pulse of starlight and moonlight in a windswept glade.
Marle was the first to stir beneath
him, and he felt his senses returning to him gradually, like light filtering
through sunlit treetops and leafy boughs. Magus realized almost groggily that
he was still sheathed in her, and he pulled out of her gently, a last moan with
the last jolt of pleasure escaping his throat as he moved to lie beside her. Marle
immediately rolled onto her side so that she could mold herself to him,
burrowing her head in the crook of his arm and laying her arm across his chest.
He watched her as she watched him,
her fathomless eyes dark with emotion, a tender smile fluttering about her
kiss-swollen lips. A smile curved upon his mouth as well, and he took her hand
and laid a gliding kiss upon her knuckles, eliciting a muffled giggle.
“Do you think we were quiet this
time?” Marle whispered languorously, her eyes twinkling at him.
“Perhaps,” Magus replied
thoughtfully. “Perhaps . . . I care not.” She grinned at him, and he arched a
brow with dry mirth in response. “Perhaps even the priestesses at the shrine
heard us,” he told her with a smirk.
“Oh, let all of Zenan and Porre
hear,” Marle burst out, suddenly clamping a hand over her mouth to smother her
peals of laughter when he raised both brows.
They lapsed into companionable
silence, allowing their skin to cool and fighting away the desire to fall into
sleep, passing the time by watching each other and watching the evening sky.
“What time do you think it is?” Marle
asked some minutes later.
“Around an hour after midnight,”
Magus replied, glancing at the position of the stars and the moon wheeling
overhead.
“I don’t want to sleep yet,” Marle
mumbled petulantly, stifling her own yawns. “I want to stay here with you. I don’t
want to be separated from you later when we go off to do what we have to do. .
. .”
“Neither do I,” he told her, a pang
throbbing in his heart when she looked up at him, piteous and imploring, yet
resigned. He allowed his fingers to glide through her bright satin hair, and
she moved towards his touch, sighing with contentment.
“Magus . . .” she whispered. He
looked down at her and saw fear written in her face. It chilled him, and he
stroked her hair and her cheeks in silent comfort.
“When we’re finished with everything
. . .” She trailed off, twirling a tendril of his quicksilver-blue hair in her
fingers. “If—when,” she corrected
herself, “we survive the fight with Lavos. . . .” She raised her emerald gaze
to his shyly. “I don’t mean to impose . . . I know you still have things to do,
but . . . don’t forget me, please?”
Magus’ heart softened, and he looked
down at her fondly, still gliding his fingers over her tresses and her skin.
“Marle,” he began quietly, stilling
his motions as she looked up at him, her pleas visible in her wide eyes. “I
have lived many lifetimes, and I have done many things. I have lost myself in
the bowels of time.” He sighed heavily. "I may have said once that the
past is all a dream. Perhaps it is true. But whether or not this existence is
merely a dream, I will never forget all those that have become important to
me—dream or no.” He cleared his throat, and continued frankly, “I have not
forgotten my sister . . . not my family, not my kingdom . . . and I shan’t
forget this. I shan’t forget you. Never you.”
Her eyes glistened with silver light,
and she rose up to kiss him, burying her tiny fingers in his hair. He laid his
hands across the small of her back and pressed her near, keeping her close to
him as their lips met.
“I’m glad,” she told him fiercely,
laughing through her tears. “Love you . . .” she mumbled into his skin.
As he held her to him and whispered
the same words in kind, Magus felt the familiar bittersweet warmth that bespoke
of his emotions creep into his chest. He discovered belatedly that the heady sensation
was no longer alien to him—still frightening, but no longer unwelcome, no
longer denied, no longer repressed.
Glancing down at her, he was mildly
surprised to see that she’d fallen asleep, slumbering quietly in the crook of
his arm. He knew he had to wake her so that they could don their clothing and
return to the rest of the party. However, as he watched the easy rise and fall
of her chest in her sleep and the exhaustion shadowing her closed eyes, he
decided that he could rouse her later. They still had a few hours together,
after all.
With that, Magus closed his eyes as
well, his dreams alive with light and song as he drifted off into sleep.
