A/N: This story takes place after the end of Silver’s story
in Sonic Next-Gen. It contains spoilers, so consider yourself warned! Also,
this fanfic contains sexual content. If you are offended by such things, stop
reading NOW. And finally, I don’t own Silver and Blaze. They belong to Sonic

all that jazz.
Chapter 1: Dreams of
an Absence
***
Clouds.
They were
unlike anything he had seen before. He had of course seen a cloud before, but
he had always thought of them as dark and threatening, the sign of an
approaching storm. But these were different… big and white and fluffy, like the
pictures of that plant called “cotton” that he had seen in the ancient history
files. Slowly they drifted across a pale blue sky… something that was equally
unfamiliar. He didn’t know what he thought of the sky yet, but he liked the
clouds. It almost looked like you could wrap yourself up in one like a blanket
and go to sleep… It made him wonder if anyone had ever gone high enough to try
that.
The silver-furred
hedgehog sighed and closed his eyes. For his relatively young age, he was
quite handsome… not that being handsome mattered until a few weeks ago. His
quills formed back into two long spines on the back of his head. White hair
formed a five-pointed pattern that sprung up from his forehead, a hairstyle
that was more or less a permanent condition. There were black markings at the
edges of his eyes, which were normally gold save for when he used his psychic
powers. Fluffy chest fur formed a “mane” that grew from his chest, over his
shoulders, and met up again at the small of his back, right between his two
back spines. As was typical of males of this world, the only clothes he wore
were gloves and boots. The gloves were special, golden-cuffed and marked with
runes that helped him focus his psychic energy, while the navy and green boots
were useful for maneuvering over rough terrain when psychics couldn’t be used.
All in all, he cut a nice figure… lean from years of hard living, but pleasing
to the eye.
Silver was
lying on the roof of an abandoned building. He had to admit, the calm sunlight
felt wonderful after years of blistering heat and blackness… The concrete of
the roof had been heated by the sun’s rays, and it was pleasantly warm against
his back. He wondered if Blaze had ever…
His eyes
suddenly snapped open. “Damn,” he whispered, to no one in particular.
Blaze. He
had thought of her without intending to, something that happened often despite
his efforts to keep her out of his mind. The irony of being psychic… you could
move more than a ton with your mind alone, but you couldn’t go so much as ten
minutes without thinking of a girl. Blaze… it had been her actions, her
sacrifice that had saved this world. Sealing Iblis inside her own body, she had
sent herself to another dimension, just as Silver had finally found the courage
to tell her how he felt. Now he would never see her again. Blaze…
Stop it, he told himself. It was the only way to truly defeat Iblis.
She knew what she was doing, and it worked. She saved the world, and now she’s
gone forever. There’s nothing you can do, so stop thinking about it. Having
reprimanded himself, he closed his eyes again and tried to clear his mind, to
just enjoy the heat of the sunlight…
Blaze.
No, he thought sternly. Just stop.
Blaze.
She’s never coming back. Just forget about
her.
Blaze.
Stop.
Blaze…
Silver
pounded the roof with one fist. It wasn’t fair. The world was finally free of
the scourge of Iblis, yet the one person that mattered most to him had just
suddenly vanished from his life. What was the point of all the fighting, all
the struggle, if Blaze had to sacrifice herself to end it? Staring angrily up
at the sky, he felt his eyes sting and grow wet. It wasn’t fair.
Blaze…
Something
streaked across his field of vision, almost too fast to make out. Something
like a comet, a trail of light and flame… it was growing larger as it dropped,
coming closer. Weeks ago, something like this would have sent him into high
alert, fearing that Iblis had launched another attack. But this was different.
The falling comet was too small to be a meteor… Silver’s heart hammered in his
chest. Stay calm, he thought. He
didn’t dare hope…
The comet
sped past the roof… not a comet at all, but a person, wrapped in a cocoon of flames… Seconds later, it crashed a
block away, throwing up a huge cloud of dust and debris and sending an alarming
rumble through the building. But the white hedgehog was already gone, already
having jumped off the roof and using his psychic energy to slow his fall. He
knew it couldn’t be her. It was impossible. But if by some miracle Blaze had returned to him… Iblis itself wouldn’t
stand in his way.
Blaze!
