Tales of the Abyss –A Wish to the Starry Sky
Author: TerraBreaker
Spoiler
warning, Foreword & Rambling:
Yep, it’s time for the obligatory few paragraphs
that have nothing to do with the story or anything else for that matter :)
Naturally
this fic contains spoilers (specifically major end-game spoilers). If you haven’t
finished the game, shame on you - stop reading and do so now!
Ah, Tales of the Abyss – it surpassed all my expectations
and ended up eating up 150 hours of my time :) But what a game, surpassing its
predecessors in so many respects – the character development in this puts so
many other RPGs to shame that it’s not even funny. I
particularly liked Tear as Luke’s love interest, her cold, shy demeanour
ensured the romance was less pronounced, but it was certainly developing over
the course of the game – but neither was able to admit it until the end, what
with Luke’s internal conflict and Tear’s shy but forceful demeanour. The fact
that Tear was wearing dark black attire, with her hair covering her eye,
suppressed her emotions and wasn’t the typical pink and fluffy RPG heroine fawning
over the main male lead pleased me no end. Luke’s arrogance at the beginning of
the game was also a welcome change, and his character was very well developed
over the course of the game. So in summary by putting their romance on the
backburner so to speak it was far better executed than many recent efforts.
Regarding how this fic came about,
I decided it was about time we had a LukexTear fic on AFF that does some justice to what I thought was a
well executed, non conventional relationship. That was back in January! Now
I’ve finally got back to finishing the fic in August
:( Most recently, Odin Sphere and Oblivion have been distracting me from
writing (both are great games, so go buy them!) The ever tedious “real life”
hasn’t helped matters either and I’ve had a BAD case of writers block for the
past 6 months L
My copy of Persona 3 arrived earlier this week so I decided I had to finish
this fic now, or else I never would. (Jeanne d’Arc is on the way, and Wild ARMS 5 is out next week, with
a new Growlanser following next month = RPG backlog
hell!)
Many of you have been waiting for a decent and satisfying post
game LukexTear fic/lemon to
bring some closure to the game (myself included) so here it is – good things
come to those who wait, patience is a virtue and all that. So here’s my gift to
all you LukexTear fans - I hope it’s everything you
expected, and more!
I’d like to extend my thanks to some of the users on the GameFAQS forums (some of the debates are quite interesting
before some idiot invariably derails the topic) for some valuable
insight/analysis and conjecture on the game ending, particularly Darkness334 for the thread “A short literary analysis of the ending”
which helped me organise some of my thoughts regarding this in my own head.
Also thanks to hhafiz from the GameFAQS
forums for reminding me about the conditions for Selenia
flowers blooming. Thanks also go to miyuki308
for providing information on the timeline of the game.
Thanks to Namco for bringing us such a great game (though I
had to import it to the UK,
as with most other decent games) but why oh why did they release it so close to
FFXII and a swarm of other RPGs? Very
poor marketing plan, imo. Now, we’ve enjoyed
Abyss (and I’m currently enjoying Radiant Mythology – more Luke + Tear
goodness) and want some more “Tales of” action, so Namco where the hell are the
English versions of Rebirth and Destiny II, eh? One more thing – no more damn
slowdown on the world map, you hear!
Anyways, its multi-chapter stuff this time, enjoy.
It's
disclaimer 2 time!!!
Though it truly is a travesty, Tales of the Abyss, the
characters, locations, etc are not mine. These are used without permission and
are owned by Bandai Namco. I don’t make any profit from this story (which is also
a shame.)

Chapter 1 - Reunion in Selenia
Night had fallen upon the field of flowers, like a magical
blanket hiding the ugly and accentuating the beauty of the luminous Selenia, the elegant singing girl sat as the centrepiece in
this dazzling display. The world had moved on and yet had stood still. Five
figures wait patiently in Tartaroo
Valley. They stood there, their
steadfast faces akin to ancient watchers, here in the ethereal field of Selenia flowers blossoming in the moonlight, their
conviction was unshakable. A girl sings an otherworldly hymn in this forgotten
place, a hand held to her heart, her words lost in the wind like so many
memories gone by, her heart gripped by both sadness and hope as she finished
her song; a stark beauty amidst the pure white Selenia.
“You didn’t come,” the
Kimlascan princess stated softly, “I believe your presence
was requested at Luke’s coming of age ceremony at the duke’s manor.” Natalia let her words hang in the air, seemingly unsure of
the words that were coming out of her mouth.
“I’m not interested in some ceremony, in front of Luke’s
grave…” The singing girl cast her eyes downward as she whispered her reply, her
black clothed form almost a contradiction to her current surroundings.
“That’s why the both you came
here, isn’t it?” Anise inquired of Jade and Natalia.
“He said he’d be back, so let the
others sit around and tell stories at his grave – but I won’t be joining them.”
Guy declared, his stoic confidence in his friend resolute
as ever.
A heavy silence pervaded the
gathering as the group waited for what in their hearts, they knew could never
be. Each passing second felt like an hour, even the defiant fire that had sparked
in Guy’s eyes gradually fading to but a flicker. Strong winds rushed through
the valley, sending a shiver through the sea of endless white around them,
itself like a gulf that separated them from their friend.
“…We should be heading back soon.
The valley is dangerous at night.” The necromancer’s words fell on the girl
like a scythe, her head drooped and she shifted slightly as their hope… their
promise slowly ebbed away. Jade’s sight was trained on the girl on the rock, betraying
some faint measure of pity on his otherwise indifferent face.
“Hope… The cruellest emotion of
all,” Jade thought in silence.
It was
with a heavy heart that the group reluctantly began to turn and leave the
valley. The seventh fonist,
still unwilling to give up on her love, paused before she stepped up off the
rock. She cast her eyes sideways, back over the Selenia,
compelled into taking one last longing, hopeful glance, she felt as though her
heart was literally willing her not to leave the valley. Casting one last
despondent glance over the field her eyes widened at the sight of a faint
shadow in the distance, scarcely able to believe what she was seeing - her
heart and mind caught between dreams and reality.
Under the shimmering moonlight, a red haired figure clad in
purest white began walking towards her. Everyone present in the valley whirled
round as they heard the distant sound of footsteps approaching them. The girl stepped
down from the rock as he drew closer to her, unable to take her eyes away from
him for a second lest the dream fade away. Finally, when the two stood before
each other, their eyes met after being separated for over a year.
“Why are… you here?” Her heart raced with a thousand different emotions as she breathed
her soft, seeking words.
“This place has… a nice view of Hod.
And also… I promised someone.” A smile spread across
his face as he spoke.
The singing girl struggled to stifle her overflowing
emotions as she heard his words. Her lips trembled, the first droplets of
liquid welling up in her blue, crystalline eyes as the realisation sank in. Unable
and unwilling to conceal her emotions any longer, she ran towards her lost love.
The man’s friends followed suit, a sharp gust of wind violently
blew the red haired man’s cloak upwards as they approached, dishevelling the
thick mass of hair that obscured his face, which bore a contented smile as Tear
threw herself against him.
“Luke!” her voice wavering hysterically as she alternated
between crying and hitting his chest, her emotions pouring out. “What - Where
have you been?” she voiced the question that they all wanted to ask, staring at
Luke intently as if trying to draw out the answer with her eyes, yet they all
knew what the answer would be.
“Tear… Everyone… I’m back.” Luke answered in a very matter
of fact way, looking over each of his old friends in turn before returning his
attention to the girl before him. He opened his mouth to speak but Tear silenced
him, placing a finger to his lips.
“No!” She shook her head violently as she struggled to speak
through her tears, knowing that just being here, held in his arms - this
feeling conveyed more than mere words ever could. “I’m just happy that you’re
here... Thank you for coming back to me… Back to us.” She
paused as she felt his arms embracing her body tighter still, “… But you’re
still an idiot.”
“I figured you’d say that.” Luke replied, suppressing a
chuckle as he wiped the tears from his lover’s cheek.
“Ahem!” An irritated Anise interrupted their heartfelt
reunion, tapping her foot as she tried in vain to get their attention. The two
snapped back to reality to find they had been surrounded by their group of
friends. Like two teenagers caught in the act, they hurried to disentangle
themselves from each other. Satisfied that the pair’s liaison had been
temporarily abated, Anise continued, “You sure had US worried too, Luke! It’s
not just Tear who missed you, Guy did, and Jade too… And, I…” Anise faltered. Never usually one to
be lost for words, she too had also fallen victim to the torrent of emotion
that was fluttering in her heart and speech, and soon found herself
nervously tracing patterns on the ground with her foot.
“I’m glad to see you too, Anise.”
Anise did her best to stifle her tears as she embraced Luke’s
lower half. “I’m glad you’re back with us… And I’m sure Ion is happy too.”
Anise finished her speech with a sniffle before dashing away, disappearing from
view behind Jade before her emotions got the best of her.
“Luke… You kept your promise.” Natalia
spoke quietly as she approached, taking Luke’s hand in her own, “You didn’t
disappear.” Like Tear before her, Kimlasca’s princess
was visibly moved by her cousin’s return, the expression on her graceful face one
of tearful elation as she felt the warmth of his hand in hers.
“Yeah, sorry I made you wait so long.” Luke sheepishly scratched
his head with his free hand as Natalia continued to
stare intently at his face, as if searching for something deep within.
“I’m glad Luke…” Natalia let go of
his hand, “Glad that you wanted to live…” Her words trailed off, Luke thought
he caught a twinge of sadness flash across her face as she stepped away.
“Luke, I’m glad to see you’re still… alive.” Jade wove his
usual tapestry of mystery, suspense and intrigue as he approached, a bemused
smirk occupying his face all the while.
“Jade!” Anise interjected, appearing out of nowhere, she angrily
pointed her finger at the lanky general to emphasise her disapproval of his
behaviour, “Is that really what you wanted to say to Luke?”
“Of course,” the words rolled off Jade’s tongue as he
casually adjusted his glasses. Anise sighed, an exasperated look on her face as
Jade’s silence continued.
“You sure took your time, Luke.” Guy remarked, breaking the
silence as he placed his hand on his friend’s shoulder. “But, I knew you’d be back.”
“Thanks Guy. I never could hide anything from you.”
“Oh yeah Luke, there’s one more person that’s been waiting
for you.” As he finished, he gestured to the flowers at his feet.
“Master!” Mieu
appeared from nowhere, leaping through the air and attaching to Luke’s arm. “I
was waiting for your return Master.”
“Heh, I see you’ve still got that
ring, Mieu.” Luke chuckled at the talking cheagle, noting it was still wearing the Sorcerer’s ring.
“Yes! It was a gift from you Master, I’ll always treasure it!”
“Well, it looks like we’re all back together again!” Anise
announced triumphantly, looking around the gathering of friends with a smile on
her face.
“Yeah, it’s been a while.” Luke replied, battling to detach
the overexcited cheagle from his arm.
“Indeed, but we should be heading back soon… We can talk
further tomorrow…” Jade cut straight to the point and once again turned to
begin striding out of the valley.
“Jade!” Anise fumed, stomping after the general, “You ruin
everything!”
“Heh… sorry.” the necromancer’s trademark
smirk occupied his face as Anise buzzed around him like an angry insect.
“Don’t fall behind, you two. Noelle and the Albiore won’t be waiting around all night.” Guy nodded to
Luke and Tear before departing with Natalia,
following a short distance behind the squabbling pair in front of them.
Luke watched as his friends lead the way out of the valley
before looking at the beautiful girl standing beside him, the fire of life now rekindled
in her eyes. Gesturing to their departing friends, Luke asked, “Tear, shall we
go?”
Tear nodded in response, and the two began to walk out of
the valley side by side, engaging in light, whispered conversation so Luke
could catch up with what he’d missed in the past few months.
“Um, Luke.” she stopped dead, looking at the ground uncertainly
as she considered something.
“Huh?”
Clasping his hand in her own before he’d had time to
register what she had said to him, she made haste out of the valley with Luke
in tow. This little scene hadn’t escaped the notice of their friends however, and
the two lovers soon felt their stares and hushed whispers as they caught up
with their four friends. The group’s teasing of the couple continued from afar as
they all made their way out of the valley. The crimson faced pair straggled behind
the main group, their fingers entwined in an unbreakable grip.
