"I don't know who you are, friend, but you made a serious mistake coming here. Lieutenant! I want everyone in the clearing! Now!"
Another mercenary, no more impressive than the several dozen Hawke had already dispatched, staggered into view at the top of the stairs, gasping for breath. He managed a feeble gasp of, "Captain..." before falling on his face, dead. A tall figure emerged from the shadows and advanced on the last man standing without a second look at the fresh corpse. "Your men are dead. And your trap has failed. I suggest running back to your master while you can." Hawke could hear the smile behind the elf's cold voice and wondered if the captain would make at least a single smart decision that night. She sighed when he pulled out his sword. "You're going nowhere, slave!" Apparently the captain was as stupid as he looked. A cruel smile lit the elf's face as his body began to glow an icy blue. In less than a breath, the elf punched the captain in the chest...and through it. The elf flexed his fingers through the man, growling, "I am not a slave." He removed his arm and let the body fall to the ground. Finally, he turned to look Hawke in the face with large, green eyes. "I...apologize. When I asked Anso to provide a distraction for the hunters, I had no idea they'd be so...numerous." Hawke cleared her throat. Why was her heart beating so fast? "So, they were after you?" "Yes," he drawled, crossing his arms. "My name is Fenris. These men were Imperial bounty hunters seeking to recover a Magister's lost property, namely myself. They were trying to lure me into the open. Crude as their methods were, I could not face them alone." He smiled, slightly, but it was a smile that softened his face in a way that made Hawke want to do whatever it would take to make him smile like that again. "Thankfully, Anso chose wisely." Hawke's cheeks warmed. Since when did she blush at a compliment? The job had been a ruse, which should have infuriated her, yet all she felt was relief that Fenris hadn't been left to face the hunters alone. "If they were really trying to recapture you, then I'm happy I helped." The elf seemed confused. "I have met few in my travels who have sought anything more than personal gain. If I may ask: What was in the chest? The one they kept in the house?" "It was empty," Hawke replied. What had he hoped to find? "I suppose it was too much to hope for. Even so, I had to know." He bent down to search the body at his feet. "It's as I thought," he growled, straightening with a piece of paper crushed in his fist. "My former master accompanied them to the city. I know you have questions, but I must confront him before he flees. I will need your help." The edge in his voice made her shudder and hope to never be the focus of his deep rage. "It sounds like you intend to do more than just talk." He narrowed his eyes, frowning at her. "Danarius wants to strip the flesh from my bones and has sent so many hunters that I have lost count. And before that, he kept me on a leash like a Qunari mage, a personal pet to mock Qunari custom. So, yes, I intend to do more than just talk." "If it means fighting more slavers, I'll help you." She kicked herself mentally. He had obviously misunderstood. Fenris grinned in savage delight, already prepared for the hunt. "I will find a way to repay you. I swear it."Fenris burst through the door, gulping the cool night air, glad to rid his lungs of the filth Danareus had left in the mansion. He leaned against the wall not far away, his breathing slowing, leaning his head back to look up at the sky. To a simple passer-by, he would have appeared to be at ease, though he was anything but. He was poised and could be ready at a moment's notice, should the rustling in the shrubs 50 yards north turn out to be anything other than a simple nocturnal creature trying to survive.
While still scanning the surroundings for any disturbance, Fenris let a separate portion of his mind wander to the night's events. Hawke had been an impressive and beautiful sight, charging into the fray just as he did, though with her own unique flair, wielding a sword and shield as easily as he swung his enormous two-handed blade. Amwyn Hawke was impressive, he corrected himself, shuddering at the thought of her...sister. His ear twitched at a sound behind the door the moment before it opened. Hawke emerged into the soft moonlight, and Fenris had a moment to appreciate the way it slid over her unusually soft features before she was followed by the dwarf and the...abomination. "It never ends," he growled, glaring at the younger Hawke briefly before turning back to the more favorable sister. "I escaped a land of dark magic only to have it hunt me at ever turn. It is a plague burned into my flesh and my soul. And now I find myself in the company of even more mages." "You can speak to me directly." The abomination was offended. Good. "I saw you casting spells inside," he spat, glaring at her in full. "I should have realized sooner what you really were. You harbor a viper in your midst," he told Hawke without taking his eyes off of the real danger. "It will turn on you and strike when you least expect. That is in its nature." "My sister is stronger than you think." Fenris turned back to he warrior, and wondered if the flush in her cheeks was perhaps something softer moving within her as it had in him. Doubtful. It was more likely anger. "I'm not blind. I know magic has its uses, and there are undoubtedly mages with good intentions. But even the best intentioned mage can fall prey to temptation. And then their power is a curse to inflict upon others." "No one's stopping you from moving on, you know," the mage said, crossing her arms, already dismissing him, just as the Magisters had whenever he had fulfilled their needs. He scowled at the mage's callousness. Hawke picked with the pommel of her sword, the flush in her cheeks having climbed up her ears and slid down her neck, and Fenris cursed to himself. He hadn't meant to make things difficult for her. "I imagine I appear ungrateful. If so, I apologize, for nothing could be further from the truth. I did not find Danarius, but I still owe you a debt. Here is all the coin I have, as Anso promised." He handed her a pouch that was lighter than she deserved. She took it from him, and he admired her slender fingers as they wrapped around the leather. Surprising, how hands that delicate could be so strong. He should have turned away, should have started his journey to the next city, the next place to disappear, but something in her made him curious. He didn't want that to be the last he saw of her. "Should you find yourself in need of assistance," he rasped, "I would gladly render it." The corners of her mouth turned upwards. The slightest of smiles, but it was something. He became conscious of the rhythm of his heart, as if he had been running, even though the battle was far behind them. It was curious. "I'm planning an expedition I might need help with." It wasn't much, but it was something. Something that seemed promising. "Fair enough. Should you ever have need of me, I will be here. If Danareus wishes his mansion back, he is free to return and claim it. Beyond that," he smiled, "I am at your disposal."While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
