_________________ It had been 4 years since Lara obtained the Ora Dagger from the Temple Of Puna. And here she was, back in the South Pacific. She had been recruited by a research corporation to go retrieve an ancient mask from what was called the Temple Of Maya. She had been making her way through the forest leading up to there & she was roughly 2 miles out. “Alright, Lara,” said Zip over the headset, “You know what you need to do. And you know what your orders are.” “Yes, Zip.” she said sounding annoyed. She had been instructed to be as stealthy as possible, avoiding confrontation at all costs. “I don’t get it. You guys send me out on these missions with 2 pistols & expect me not to use them?? It’s the fastest & most effective way deal with potential threats!” “We arm you in hopes that you’ll use them as a last resort to defend yourself,” he explained. “I don’t know what’s up with you, but you seem to have become a little more itchy behind the trigger these days & get a thrill out of stirring up a ruckus. Plus, the research team in charge has agreed to pay us BIG money if there are no casualties & I am required to report any to them. So consider that incentive to try to control yourself. There’s no telling what you’re up against as we have little to no knowledge about this place. The quieter you are, the better.” “Fine,” she groaned, “Lara out.” As she continued to make her way through the tall grass, she thought to herself that maybe she could afford to be a little stealthier than she has been. Though she wasn’t big on the fact that it would require her to move slowly. She would rather blow the door down, grab the mask & get out. But she had received her orders. About a mile later, she came upon a small campsite. Observing the scene to from cover, she noticed a campfire had been set. Pacing back & forth in front of it was a man wearing what looked like a skull mask, covered in tribal paint & tribal garb, carrying a spear. “Clearly a sentry. They must really have something to hide if someone is on guard this far out,” she thought to herself. Lara saw no other way to get around him without using force. Her thirst for blood caused her hands to shake as she said to herself, “I know what I was told, but this is the only way. I need to get it out of my system. Bring the kill count to one & leave it that way.” She crept closer to the campsite. “Lara, come in,” she heard over the headset. She ignored & prepared to strike. She counted down in her head, “Okay, 3…2…1…” jumped out from the brush & hopped onto the guard’s back. He ran around in circles piggybacking her & shouting something in another language. In an attempt to shake her off, he slammed his backside into a tree. Lara held on for dear life as she could feel herself being smashed over & over again between him & the tree. If it had gone on any longer, she was going to break. She desperately climbed up his back a little more, put her hands around his head & snapped his neck. Just like that, he fell over, completely lifeless. Lara brought herself back to the ground & fell to her knees, gasping for breath. She put one hand on her back & could feel herself bleeding, along four or five small tears down her shirt. She had few medium sized cuts on her legs as well. She would stay there to rest for a few minutes, stunned & weak. “Lara!!!” Zip yelled over the headset, “Do you think I’m that stupid?? I know what you're up to!!!” She un-muted, “Look, I had to kill the sentry. It was the only way that I could get through. Nobody saw, nobody heard.” “Fine, I’ll pretend like it never happened. Are you okay at least??” “I’m fine,” she lied. “Okay, so now you know what you’re up against. There are bound to be more like him. There is no way you’re going to survive if you keep letting them know you’re there. They’ll be even less thrilled if they find out why.” “Got it, I’ll make sure I stay in the shadows. Lara out.” Just after she turned her mic off, another one of them jumped out from the grass. Before she could react, he had already taken a wooden club to her head, knocking her out as she lie on her back. Five minutes later, she finally came to, dazed & disoriented. Something wasn’t right though. She could feel a set of stone cold hands rubbing up & down her waist, making her shiver. She let out an several unforced moans, still not yet unaware of her surroundings, “Mmmm, ahhh…” When she finally realized what was going on, her eyes shot open. But by then, the man had vanished into the forest. She got back to her feet, feeling uneasy about what might have happened if she had been out any longer. “Whatever that was all about,” she said as she could feel herself shaking, “I can’t let it happen again.” Her legs were still hurting from being rammed into the tree, so the best she could do was limp into the brush & continue towards the temple. Little did she realize that she had left a ‘trail of breadcrumbs’ from not only the guard's body, but her water canteen had fallen off of her from the tree as well. She would come across a number of campsites, each one with more security than the next, but opted to make her way around them without notice. About an hour later, she made it to the temple. She got on the set, “Zip, if you could only see,” as she marveled at how big the temple was. “Well I’m glad your enjoying the sights. Find a way to get in there.” “Roger, I’ll see if there’s another way. I’ll let you know if I find something. Out,” she said, not knowing that it would be the last time she would ever have contact with anyone from the outside. She walked along the perimeter of the temple for 10 minutes, but found nothing of an entrance. As she proceeded, she heard rustling in the grass. It wasn’t her. Someone was following her. She fought through the pain from the incident before & ran as fast as she could. As she looked behind her, she saw nobody. When she finally slowed down, she actually found herself in front of another entrance! She walked closely up to it, but before she could enter, she felt something sting her in the back of her shoulder. “Ouch! What the??” She reached back to see what it was & she realized what had hit her. “A dart?!?, but what kind of…” She began to feel dizzy & dropped down to a knee. She was injected with some kind of sedative. Facing the ground, breathing heavily, everything started spinning around her as she thought, “But……who….??” She picked her head up & saw one of the tribesman carrying her canteen & walking towards her. She started stirring until she could get back to her feet, but couldn’t stand up straight. She went to reach for her pistols, but once she took her eye off of him, he slammed her upside the head & knocked her to the ground, completely destroying her headset in the process. She opened her eyes & saw him standing over her. With her breathing still labored, she was fading fast. She saw as the man started to reach for her. With what little energy she had left in her, she quietly pleaded, “No…” And before she could say anything else, she blacked out. ..While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
