He couldn’t have torn his gaze away from her if Denarius himself appeared before him from the grave. She moved with such grace; the fire licking her movements with its flickering light. Her body swayed in rhythm to the Dalish drums. The female elves danced around her, but Fenris had eyes only for Hawke. She wore a blue shaded dress that brought forth her sparkling eyes. Her feet were bare which only added to her allure. His own attire consisted of a simple green tunic and breeches, picked by Hawke. Her midnight black hair had grown out since their time with the Dalish and was now freely flowing as she twirled. They had been hiding among the Dalish for over a year for fear of the Seekers finding them. Damn that cursed Anders. Hawke should be living as a queen instead of constantly being hunted and on the run. Fenris knew all too well the feeling of being hunted after six years of fearing Denarius was around every corner. He would never have wished Hawke to experience that. Fenris was so lost in his thoughts that he missed the change in the drum beats, his usual queue to retire to the tent he and Hawke shared.
It wasn’t until she stood in front of him that he realized his mistake. Her hand stretched out for his as he saw the other male Dalish start to join the dance. Her husky voice whispered, “Dance with me Fenris.” He raised his hands in refusal until she caught his gaze. There was a fierce joy in her sharp blue eyes. It was a glow he could not let die. He let her pull him into the ring of dancers. Fenris looked shyly to the side mumbling, “Slaves do not dance.” Hawke gave him her smirk, “But you are no longer a slave,” her face changed to a more serious demeanor, “just follow my lead; I won’t let you fall.” Follow her lead? Fenris would follow her into the deepest parts of the Deep Roads, in fact he had once already and even with the many dangers he now knew existed he would go again at Hawke’s behest. She moved slowly at first while he plundered along. He was clinging to her while her grip was firm and controlled along his waist. The sensation of her so close to him always stirred feelings he had never thought he would feel. A slave did not love but he was not a slave. But how did one learn to love when all his past memories had taught him love was a weakness? His feet began to move in accordance to hers. The steps started to come naturally to him and soon he realized they were at the full tempo of the rest of the clan. Hawke’s joy became his own as they dance together beneath the stars. The drums stopped. Fenris held on, reluctant to let go of this happiness, this freedom, he felt. He wrapped Hawke gently in his arms, “Thank you. I had not known what freedom could be felt in dancing.” She placed a kiss on his neck, sending shivers down his spine, “I am glad you enjoyed it, but I would like one last dance with you before the dawn rises.” There was a twinkle in her eye that Fenris could not ignore. He chuckled, “Then by all means, let us dance the night away.” As they retired to their tent Fenris looked at Hawke with new hope. Maybe an ex-slave did not have to learn to love; maybe such precious ideals came naturally. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
