Authors' Note: Hello guys! If you recognize this story AWESOME! It's also posted on Y!Gallery and Fanfiction.net (maybe still?) under the name Renegadecat. Considering that the last chapter was posted in 2008, thus completing this particular series I thought it was time to do a bit of cleaning. For those of you familiar with the story expect that most of it is the same with minor editing to enhance the plot. Also notice that there will be a larger female presence in this particular version. Not in terms of sexual relations to any male character but rather support. Seriously if you could help two anime guys along in their hot steamy romance you would right? Right.
This story is complete however, I will be editing each chapter and since there are about 35 of them that might take me awhile. Please be patient with me! Reviews would be nice but if you don't leave one it's okay! Thanks again for reading!
~*~The darkness was smothering him.
Scalding tears fell from open eyes that saw nothing except the darkness in front of him. Demyx had been here for so long now, too long, not long enough? Time was irrelevant these days, weeks? Months? Minutes? His breathing was muted and distressed in the smothered air, he just wanted it to end, for the darkness to consume him fully, choke and crush him like the nothing he was…the nothing he is. It would have been better to truly die than to stay here in this damned limbo any longer.
The worst part of it was that Demyx never got to see him before he died. There had been that imposter who they had claimed was Roxas, but Roxas would never hurt him like this, Roxas would have never sent him here to the darkness. “Xigbar!” Demyx finally cried shamelessly. He had been holding it in for so long, his optimism slowly dying out as the darkness stretched before him never ending and unyielding. He’d been here once long ago before he had been dropped into the World that Never Was and met Xigbar and the other’s of Organization XIII. That time he had no idea where he had come from and no idea where he was going. It was different now.
Demyx desperately wished that Xigbar was with him now, or that he had at least been able to say goodbye to him before he had been struck down. They’d had such a violent fight before he left and all because Xigbar didn’t think he could take care of himself! He could too! At least, that’s what he thought at the time.
“Oh please…I just want to see him again, to tell him I’m sorry! I don’t care where, when or how! Please…please…please…” he finally begged, voice cracking until it gave out, the soft whispers of the word drifting across his chapped and lonely lips. He clutched his head in his hands, gripping them together in a motion that was clearly one of prayer and supplication. “I love him…I LOVE HIM!” his mind screamed as his lips formed the words he could no longer say.
There was a sudden jolt and Demyx winced as his body was wrenched downwards. Sluggishly at first as if someone was testing the strength of the dark tendrils and then stronger as though they had changed their grip and could yank harder, faster. Physical pain lanced through his body, his chest nearly exploding from unknown power coursing through his weakened body. What was left of his voice tore through his throat in a feeble scream as a bright and blinding light erupted beneath him and then, with another strong yank and a tug he was pulled through the darkness out into a clear blue sky. Too bad for him that the last violent pull on his body had rendered him unconscious as he began to fall into the ocean below.
~*~
When Demyx slowly awoke some time later it was to find that he was lying on the sun warmed deck of a ship, surrounded by the worried whispers and rowdy laughter of unknown voices. His eyes closed quickly in response to the too bright sun even as his stomach muscles contracted as he attempted to sit up. Unfamiliar pain in his chest made him wince and flop back down helplessly. “Oy! The boy’s awake! Let’s get ‘im up now!” a hearty voice ordered as rough hands grabbed Demyx from all sides to help him to his feet.
“Uh…thanks…” Demyx coughed as he massaged his throat gently, voice rasping as he tried again to say thank you. One of the crewmen handed him a glass of amber liquid and thinking that it was better than nothing Demyx drank quickly and choked as it burned down his throat to his stomach. The crew laughed and another man slapped him firmly on the back, propelling him forward but he was able to quickly catch his balance amid more laughter as he straightened and attempted to gain his sea legs. Easier said than done.
“Little thing can’t hold his ale!” someone shouted jovially from his right and sent the crowd into cheers and shouts.
“Looks like he ain’t got ‘is bearin’s either!” another laughed as Demyx tripped over his feet attempting to walk somewhere away from everyone. He didn’t detect a threat but it was a bit unnerving to be around so many people so suddenly. He wasn’t entirely sure how he should react to the situation. They weren’t enemies, yet but he wasn’t necessarily sure if they were allies. To be honest he had no idea what was going on or how he got here, his brain however had yet to catch up with his mouth in order to demand the answers he knew he needed. Before he could form at least a simple “How did I get here?” an authoritative voice cut through the crowd and silenced them quickly.
“WHAT in holy hell is going on here?” the all too familiar voice snapped. Demyx turned his head to the source so fast he could feel neck joints popping back in place, that had been knocked out from his fall. Face paling and cup dropping from his hand he could only stare, mouth agape at the object of his desire. He wasn’t sure if he could laugh, cry or sing at that very moment.
Xigbar was standing straight in front of him, dressed from top to bottom as a rakish and dashing pirate. Tight pants hugged in all the right places, shirt hanging loose on his athletic, masculine frame, eye patch firmly in place. Demyx’s mind screamed at him to move or speak, prodded and propelled him, but his feet would not move, his mouth would not form the shout of joy; he stood there, dumbly staring at the man he loved. He had been given a second chance? Was that why his chest ached so terribly? Curiously he put his hand on his chest and gazed at it in wonder as he felt the steady beating of his heart.
He had a heart… HE HAD A HEART.
“So boy…Charlie tells me that you fell from the sky,” Xigbar demanded, prematurely ending Demyxs’ fascination with his new organ. The former Nobody looked up at Xigbar with a happy, foolhardy grin. “Well is it true? I don’t have time for games!” Xigbar shouted at him. Demyx wasn’t sure how to answer so he looked up and then back down, smile still in place as he began to toy with the fastenings of his black coat. It was beyond his capacity to wonder why the garment was still on his body but he was quite grateful, unsure if he wanted to be naked in front of so many people.
“I…suppose that’s true, I don’t remember much before I woke up,” he answered as truthfully as possible, Xigbar never did approve of him lying. Demyx only remembered the crushing darkness, the feeling of nothingness as it closed in around him, suffocated him and trying to destroy him. Xigbar gave him a critical look but Demyx continued to smile. “I just wanted to say how happy I am to see you!” he suddenly blurted out, happiness evident in his voice as he practically beamed up at the shocked sea captain. The crew that had been talking fell silent.
“What did you say boy?” Xigbar growled in that deep, sexy voice of his. Demyx stared at him for a moment as one golden eye burned into his azure iris’s. Was it possible that…Xigbar didn’t remember him? His face fell considerably as he considered the possibility and the captain was quick to notice. “It doesn’t matter I suppose, if you did fall, you must have hit your head, but you look fine to me, must be the new crow’s nest that Ian hired,” he sighed with a roll of his eyes. “Just don’t fall again and I might be willing to overlook your nonsense!” he snapped as he turned sharply on his boots and strode away.
Demyx wanted to run after him, to shake him and scream all his questions. Why didn’t Xigbar remember him? It didn’t make sense, none of this made sense!! Why would he be sent to this place with a heart and all feelings and memories intact to be faced with… with the crushing knowledge that his lover either didn’t remember him or didn’t love him anymore and was pretending in order to push him away. Demyx pretended that the last thought didn’t make his chest ache unbearably.
Before Demyx could take a step in the direction the captain had headed he was cuffed by one of the larger sailors and shoved towards the rigging, in the center of the ship. “Up you go boy!” he shouted, arm swinging in an encouraging upward motion. It was with regret that Deymx decided not to try his luck in tracking down the captain and began to climb the ropes that lead to his new outpost. He was surprised and grateful that his body remembered months of physical training and exercise that allowed him to climb quickly with no slips.
Apparently his time as a Nobody hadn’t deserted him. He smirked bitterly. Of course he remembered that perfectly. He was Number IX the Melodious Nocturne, he sang, he danced; he commanded water for crying out loud! He wondered if he could still summon his sitar with that familiar wave of his hand, but was more concerned with the fact that Xigbar didn’t seem to know him at all. What was going on here? Was everything really okay? He didn’t know who or what was behind this or why they waited so long to implement their plan. Was he being used for good or evil? Was he being used at all? Too many questions to ponder along with the ache developing around his heart, all he wanted was to say “I love you.” one more time. He needed Xigbar to remember him, their life together, all the time they spent finding release in each other’s arms. He needed Xigbar to be that man again, the one that made him shudder and cry out passionately in the never-ending night. He needed it more than he needed anything else. A single tear slipped from the corner of his downcast eyes as the sound of the ocean rocked him soothingly. Wiping it absently he was unaware that one golden eye observed him critically from below.
